This was the first 7th Heaven book I read so I was just exploring. I can tell you that all those people who say stories based on TV is ... are wrong! I loved this book and it gave my another 7th heaven rertue to think about. Lucy get's tangled between what's yruley right and got she truley wants, will she chose to be faithful toward her pnly friend at camp or will she get caught up in a stir of love? I highly recomend this! It will keep you going back for more.
I am also reading the Sister's Through the Seasons and I'm just on the first book in that "Ruthy goes to Hollywoood" I suggest this after you read Camp Camden

I don't believe in hero worship, let alone living hero worship but Ali comes as close to a hero as you can get. This book does a good job of sheding light on why Ali is idolized and held in reverence by so many people throughout the world. The book moves quickly through the major events of Ali's life in a manner that is easy to digest for young, impressionable minds. The children's book is light and easy to hold and has plenty of art to capture the imagination. As with any children's book it is important to add information and clarity to subjects brought about in the book. For example, when the issue of the draft and his refusal to go into the Army is raised, the adult should explain, in more depth, about the time period; supplement the information ,if you will. The unorthodox written style, a free-verse structure, that is highlighted by the text being in different sizes, sometimes straight, some times at an angle, results in a fun and clever way at looking at a children's book. As with many children's books, the art work is one of the major strengths of the book. The art is as exuberant as the the subject matter. This book is a nice introduction into the life of Muhammad Ali for children in the primary grades. Recommended for community and primary grade libraries K-6.

It's hard to distill a complex adult's whole life into a picture book, but it's well done here. Cassius Clay become Ali, losses, recapture of the championships, his defeats, his major life changes are well presented with impressionist art. This could be a good core title to challenge young researchers on how they would condense a person's life into a 32-page picture book, and because there is not one iota of "cute" in this, it would be effectively used in a biographies unit at any grade level. SOmetimes picture book biographies tend toward "sappy" but this one maintains its rhythm and integrity well.

Lord of the ring

Review Date: 2005-02-18
Controversy dogged the boxer born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., much of it invited. It's all here - the rhyming brags and swagger that earned him headlines and ruffled opponents, his conversion to the Nation of Islam, his refusal to serve in Vietnam and subsequent court battle.

He was either an inspirational symbol of defiance against injustice, or a loudmouth buffoon who overstayed his welcome in the ring, depending on your perspective. Nor does Bolden shy from his pathetic decline from too many blows to the head, leaving a palsied echo of the proud and loud pugilist.

Christie sums up entire bouts in a few expressionistic squiggles, and in the next frame can capture both the champ's grace and grit. The acrylic colors are bold, the brushstrokes bolder, as if any canvass - including the ones Ali fought on - could ever capture a character so much larger than life.

Family drama wrapped in history

The twists and turns of a fictional love story intertwine with true historical events and bring one of England's most notorious political dramas to life. This is a well-researched and written novel. I look forward to reading more from this author.

exciting historical intrigue

Review Date: 2008-09-30
In 1605 in London with plenty of circumstantial evidence abounding, the Earl of Salisbury worries about an insidious plot against King James I. He needs someone to get inside the traitors' inner circle to learn what they are plotting so they can be stopped; that volunteer must have a special skill the conspirators would need to succeed in their plot or he would never be accepted.

Explosives expert Francis Quoynt accepts the dangerous undercover mission in which he will act as if he is against the King. Francis understands the risk. If he caught by the Royalists too soon he will hang as the counter attempt must be kept secret; if the plotters uncover his loyalties they will torture and kill him.

Francis's former lover Kate Peach happens to be in the capital; she is a Catholic at a time when the religion is not visibly practiced in London and she is alone having lost her family to the plague. Her current lover merchant Hugh Taylor is abusive so she earns money by pretending her dad still lives so she can make gloves to illegally sell to his customers; money she saves to leave London soonest while she remains alive and not incarcerated. When she and Francis meet, their desire for one another is as strong as ever; but their trust is as weak as ever.

This is an exciting historical intrigue that retells the events of the Gunpowder Treason plot. The lead couple is a terrific pairing as their emotions seem real while the support cast is strong whether they were real like Guy Fawkes or fiction. Although at times it seems half of early seventeenth century London appears (the scorer's sheet of characters helps) they add depth to a complex thriller that will leave grateful fans demanding more historicals from Christie Dickason.

Christie Dickason was born in the American Midwest, but as a child lived in Mexico, Thailand and Switzerland. She was educated at Harvard university and has been a theatre director and choreographer with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She now lives in London with her family

This work of fiction is based around the true story of the infamous Catholic plot to blow up King James and his parliament. Seen through the eyes of a courtesan and the Firemaster of the title. The narrative follows a intricate plot that will keep the reader fascinated throughout the book.

The year is 1605 and papist plots abound in the narrow streets of London. Every inn and every alleyway is a potential meeting place for the catholic plotters. Francis Quoynt, Firemaster recently returned from the wars in the low countries is dreaming of leaving the fighting behind and concentrating on making fireworks.

But his dream is short lived when he is recruited by the First Minister Sir Robert Cecil to spy on Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators. What Quoynt does not realise is that he himself is also being spied upon by Sir Francis Bacon . . . Also November 5th is approaching, but no one is aware of the significance of that date.

Travels With Agatha

Review Date: 2008-07-17
Numerous books have been written regarding the Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie. The majority of these books are those that expound upon her stories and relate almost solely to her mysteries. "The Getaway Guide to Agatha Christie's England" by Judith Hurdle is unique in that it explores the places Christie lived and loved, and also used within her novels, however disguised in her descriptions.

After a brief overview of Agatha Christie's life, the book is divided into three categories. The first two deal with sights to see in London and then the towns and locales beyond London. Hurdle lists former residences of the author (whether still standing or not), favorite shops and places to eat, and memorably offers two possible real settings for the imagined hotel in "At Bertram's Hotel". One memorable section is devoted to the British Museum, which has a collection of artifacts from Christie's second husband that she helped assemble and clean. In the section dealing with towns and locations outside of London, Hurdle examines how important trains were to the author (and which ones are still in service today), her beloved town of Torquay, and her literary trips abroad. The book finishes with a Getaway Guide, offering practicalities of traveling to see the places mentioned in the book, with sample itineraries to follow.

Judith Hurdle has done a commendable job in condensing the vast array of homes, towns, memorials and artifacts that there are to see that have some connection to Agatha Christie. As an avid mystery reader, she is able to pull quotes and scenes out of novels that use these various places as their settings. "The Getaway Guide to Agatha Christie's England" is essentially a travel book, but it also works as a companion to the places Agatha Christie lived and loved and always included in her novels.

Plan a trip!! Go armchair travelling! Use as a reference.

Charmingly written as if the author is sharing tea with the reader. So whether you actually head to Christie's England or stay in your comfy armchair, this is a nice way to bring literature to life. Actual locations from Christie's stories are pinpointed. Explanations are provided for some aspects of British life that have Americans puzzled. One could really explore London or Harrogate or other Christie places with the assistance of addresses and phone numbers included. Maps provided are okay for the armchair traveller. Towns and villages outside of London are given as much attention as suggestions in the city. I can't wait to ride the Orient Express myself!!

Short Stories That are Truly Symbolic

Review Date: 2004-09-17
This collection of short stories featuring the loveable Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot are quite delightful. The stories are written in true "tongue-in-cheek" Agatha Christie fastion. In this book we see Hercule Poirot taking on 12 very distinct cases before he thinks he will retire. He tries to duplicate the historical "Labours of Hercules" with these "final" little cases. Each story is truly unique and written in the classical Christie style. There are broad references in these stories to the what is written in the classics about the original "Labours of Hercules", and each story is a gem in its own right.

Hercule Poirot goes Greek

As always, Hercule Poirot is on the verge of retirement. But before he settles down to cultivate vegetable marrows once and for all, he decides to take on twelve last cases, in honour of his famous mythological predecessor Hercules. The twelve cases are each quite different: from searching for a lost pet to hunting down a ferocious murderer.

Although this is widely considered to be the best of Christie's short story-collections, I do have some doubts about this statement. Personally I am not a big fan of the short stories featuring Hercule Poirot, where Jane Marple has had more success in this format. An obvious weakness of this particular collection is that in quite a few stories the conclusion is so utterly obvious, that you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery. What makes this collection worth reading though is the skilfully incorporated links to Greek mythology: sometimes quite burlesque, sometimes very subtle.

The stories listed in this collection are "The Apples of the Hesperides", "The Arcadian Deer", "The Augean Stables", "The Capture of Cerberus", "The Cretan Bull", "The Erymanthian Boar", "The Flock of Geryon", "The Gridle of Hyppolita", "The Horses of Diomedes", "The Lernean Hydra", "The Nemean Lion" and "The Stymphalean Birds".

I started reading this book after I've finished reading "Crooked House." The fact is that I did not get as satisfaction as "Crooked House" from the latter book, but it was somewhat OK, I would have to say. I would recommend reading all the "essential" books from Miss Christie's official web site. All the selections from the list are awesome and intriguing in many ways. I have no choice but to give this book a three star. I am Christie fan and I have the right to be critical. : - P

Murder in Desolate Dartmoor Combines Two Intricate Plots

Review Date: 2001-04-25
Murder at Hazelmoor (British title: The Sittaford Mystery) opens on a wintry afternoon at the large mansion known as Sittaford House. The entertainment for the day is a seance which suggests that Captain Trevelyan, owner of the house, may be dead. The Captain has leased his home to a Mrs. Willett and her daughter Violet. These South African women had been so insistent on spending a typical British winter in the home that they convinced Trevelyan to move into a smaller home in nearby Exhampton. Major Burnaby, a friend of Trevelyan's, is present at the seance. Although he does not believe in spiritualism, he decides to check up on his friend and finds that Trevelyan has been murdered.

From this intriguing beginning the story moves to Trevelyan's sister, two nephews, and niece, all of whom had motive and opportunity to commit the crime. Also, a convict has escaped from a nearby prison and is added to the list of suspects along with the mysterious Willetts.

Christie weaves the murder beautifully into the novel's second plot which is the unexplained presence of the Willetts in Sittaford. This book, notable for its outstanding description of the stark and isolated setting, also introduces a gimmick that Christie will use again in her novella "Three Blind Mice."

This is a good starter book if you have never read an Agatha Christie mystery before. Poirot is one of her re-occuring characters who is as smart as he is odd. In this case, he has to uncover the mystery of how a ruby got into the pudding of the family he is staying with in England. Many other odd things start unfolding and he has to use his guile to solve it. This character is better than her Miss Marple in my opinion, so people new to this genre should really try it out.

This book is well worth reading if you are a fan of Agatha Christies, Hercule Poirot. Poirots first taste of a traditional English Christmas ends in him solving the disappearance of a Princes ruby. After recieving a sinister note warning him not to eat the Christmas Pudding, a mysterious visitor in the night and his host nearly choking on the Christmas Pudding he sets a trap for his suspect and a joke on the children of the household. Not only in this story does Poirot retrieve a stolen ruby but he also helps his hosts to rid themselves of a problem of their own. This is a brilliant book and well worth the read.

This review is for the Unabridged Audio Cassette version of "The Affair of the Pink Pearl." It is very well written and narrated. True to form. The narrator plays the character parts very well. The flow of the story kept my interest and I didn't want to stop listening, but this is definiately a "SHORT STORY"! It is ONE cassette only - 80 minutes and the original cost is $5.99. I believe Amazon is amiss in not listing a more accurate description of the audio cassette versions of books.

Agatha is a very emoionally demanding and strong willed woman who frightens her husband Archie. He probably grew up with a emotionally domineering mother who made him feel inadequeate. he doesn't like Agatha because she makes he feel bad.

He would much rather marry Nancy because she is plain and bland and doesn't threaten him. he likes obedience.

A successful pastiche of an Agatha Christie novel about Agatha Christie
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-07
On December 3, 1926, Agatha Christie disappeared. There was an immediate and enormous media frenzy. A few months earlier, she had published her seventh book, "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd," which had made her the most famous mystery writer in the world and the true successor to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

This book combines the few facts known from public records and from Christie's famously uninformative autobiography with some pleasingly low-minded speculations by Ms. Tynan. It is a mystery novel about Agatha Christie written in a reasonable approximation of Agatha Christie's own style.

Agatha returned to her home and to Archie Christie, her unfaithful husband, well before Christmas.

She said she had lost her memory.

Four stars.

NOTE: In 1979, this novel was made into a feature film with the same title. It starred Vanessa Redgrave as Agatha, Timothy Dalton as the philandering Archie and Dustin Hoffman as a fictional investigative reporter. It's well worth watching.
