Lord of the ringReview Date: 2005-02-18
He was either an inspirational symbol of defiance against injustice, or a loudmouth buffoon who overstayed his welcome in the ring, depending on your perspective. Nor does Bolden shy from his pathetic decline from too many blows to the head, leaving a palsied echo of the proud and loud pugilist.
Christie sums up entire bouts in a few expressionistic squiggles, and in the next frame can capture both the champ's grace and grit. The acrylic colors are bold, the brushstrokes bolder, as if any canvass - including the ones Ali fought on - could ever capture a character so much larger than life.

Family drama wrapped in historyReview Date: 2007-05-28
exciting historical intrigueReview Date: 2008-09-30
Explosives expert Francis Quoynt accepts the dangerous undercover mission in which he will act as if he is against the King. Francis understands the risk. If he caught by the Royalists too soon he will hang as the counter attempt must be kept secret; if the plotters uncover his loyalties they will torture and kill him.
Francis's former lover Kate Peach happens to be in the capital; she is a Catholic at a time when the religion is not visibly practiced in London and she is alone having lost her family to the plague. Her current lover merchant Hugh Taylor is abusive so she earns money by pretending her dad still lives so she can make gloves to illegally sell to his customers; money she saves to leave London soonest while she remains alive and not incarcerated. When she and Francis meet, their desire for one another is as strong as ever; but their trust is as weak as ever.
This is an exciting historical intrigue that retells the events of the Gunpowder Treason plot. The lead couple is a terrific pairing as their emotions seem real while the support cast is strong whether they were real like Guy Fawkes or fiction. Although at times it seems half of early seventeenth century London appears (the scorer's sheet of characters helps) they add depth to a complex thriller that will leave grateful fans demanding more historicals from Christie Dickason.

England in the Reign of James IReview Date: 2008-02-08
Christie Dickason was born in the American Midwest, but as a child lived in Mexico, Thailand and Switzerland. She was educated at Harvard university and has been a theatre director and choreographer with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She now lives in London with her family
This work of fiction is based around the true story of the infamous Catholic plot to blow up King James and his parliament. Seen through the eyes of a courtesan and the Firemaster of the title. The narrative follows a intricate plot that will keep the reader fascinated throughout the book.
The year is 1605 and papist plots abound in the narrow streets of London. Every inn and every alleyway is a potential meeting place for the catholic plotters. Francis Quoynt, Firemaster recently returned from the wars in the low countries is dreaming of leaving the fighting behind and concentrating on making fireworks.
But his dream is short lived when he is recruited by the First Minister Sir Robert Cecil to spy on Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators. What Quoynt does not realise is that he himself is also being spied upon by Sir Francis Bacon . . . Also November 5th is approaching, but no one is aware of the significance of that date.

Travels With AgathaReview Date: 2008-07-17
After a brief overview of Agatha Christie's life, the book is divided into three categories. The first two deal with sights to see in London and then the towns and locales beyond London. Hurdle lists former residences of the author (whether still standing or not), favorite shops and places to eat, and memorably offers two possible real settings for the imagined hotel in "At Bertram's Hotel". One memorable section is devoted to the British Museum, which has a collection of artifacts from Christie's second husband that she helped assemble and clean. In the section dealing with towns and locations outside of London, Hurdle examines how important trains were to the author (and which ones are still in service today), her beloved town of Torquay, and her literary trips abroad. The book finishes with a Getaway Guide, offering practicalities of traveling to see the places mentioned in the book, with sample itineraries to follow.
Judith Hurdle has done a commendable job in condensing the vast array of homes, towns, memorials and artifacts that there are to see that have some connection to Agatha Christie. As an avid mystery reader, she is able to pull quotes and scenes out of novels that use these various places as their settings. "The Getaway Guide to Agatha Christie's England" is essentially a travel book, but it also works as a companion to the places Agatha Christie lived and loved and always included in her novels.

Short Stories That are Truly SymbolicReview Date: 2004-09-17
Hercule Poirot goes GreekReview Date: 2003-01-20
Although this is widely considered to be the best of Christie's short story-collections, I do have some doubts about this statement. Personally I am not a big fan of the short stories featuring Hercule Poirot, where Jane Marple has had more success in this format. An obvious weakness of this particular collection is that in quite a few stories the conclusion is so utterly obvious, that you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to solve the mystery. What makes this collection worth reading though is the skilfully incorporated links to Greek mythology: sometimes quite burlesque, sometimes very subtle.
The stories listed in this collection are "The Apples of the Hesperides", "The Arcadian Deer", "The Augean Stables", "The Capture of Cerberus", "The Cretan Bull", "The Erymanthian Boar", "The Flock of Geryon", "The Gridle of Hyppolita", "The Horses of Diomedes", "The Lernean Hydra", "The Nemean Lion" and "The Stymphalean Birds".

Murder in Desolate Dartmoor Combines Two Intricate PlotsReview Date: 2001-04-25
From this intriguing beginning the story moves to Trevelyan's sister, two nephews, and niece, all of whom had motive and opportunity to commit the crime. Also, a convict has escaped from a nearby prison and is added to the list of suspects along with the mysterious Willetts.
Christie weaves the murder beautifully into the novel's second plot which is the unexplained presence of the Willetts in Sittaford. This book, notable for its outstanding description of the stark and isolated setting, also introduces a gimmick that Christie will use again in her novella "Three Blind Mice."

A successful pastiche of an Agatha Christie novel about Agatha ChristieReview Date: 2007-07-07
This book combines the few facts known from public records and from Christie's famously uninformative autobiography with some pleasingly low-minded speculations by Ms. Tynan. It is a mystery novel about Agatha Christie written in a reasonable approximation of Agatha Christie's own style.
Agatha returned to her home and to Archie Christie, her unfaithful husband, well before Christmas.
She said she had lost her memory.
Four stars.
NOTE: In 1979, this novel was made into a feature film with the same title. It starred Vanessa Redgrave as Agatha, Timothy Dalton as the philandering Archie and Dustin Hoffman as a fictional investigative reporter. It's well worth watching.
