I can't say enough great things about this book, and the author! I first read this in a small study group with some other single girlfriends. There are questions in the back, which I think are great for on your own or in a group. She really challenges you to re-think the "rules" of dating. I applied the principles in my life and years later I'm happily married with 2 beautiful children - and wouldn't have wanted to do it any other way. Had I continued down the same destructive dating path I always had (ignoring the principles), I don't think I'd be where I am today. I've given a copy of this book to just about every single girlfriend I have!

I stumbled upon this book and am so glad I did.

The author has an obvious love and passion for Jesus and a desire to tell others about how to be a godly and virtuous woman. Forget "The Rules" - Read and apply the principals outlined in the book and fall in love with the Savior. In a culture that forces one to immediate gratification, this book will inspire and motivate you to pray for your husband to FIND you ("He who finds a wife finds a good thing") while you are pursuing God's plan for your life. In addition to inspiring single women, this book also encourages married women and provides practical advice to becoming an irresistable wife.

The book is easy to read, humorous, points to Jesus, scripturally based and applicable for today. I like the use of scriptural stories which illustrate not only how to be a godly and faith inspired woman, but how the scriptures are truely timeless and relevant. She also starts each chapter with a prayer - beautiful, powerful and authentic prayer - preparing the heart of the reader to greater faith.

Knowledge of the Holy, orthodox theology 101.

Review Date: 2008-09-23
The only obvious weakness of Tozer's classic little book on Christian theology is that he eventually has a difficult time conforming to his own excellent theological advice. That is, after initially and correctly emphasizing "God Incomprehensible", he sometimes falls prey to the common tendency to define God in words and ideas too familiar and inadequate. Where he finds this to be the case, the reader may remind himself that Tozer was probably awareness of this too, as he had already described the inherent central problem of serious theology: "how shall we acquaint ourselves with One who eludes all the straining efforts of mind and heart? . . . to know what cannot be known?" As must any sober theologian, Tozer is cognizant of the fact that it's far easier to define `what God is not' (for example; not similar or `like' ANYTHING else), than to accurately define what God `is.'

Tozer believed that the spiritual life of the Christian demands, above all else, that he "must begin to think of God more nearly as He is," or, in keeping with the above statement, to become more contemplatively familiar with what God is not. He says,
"As my humble contribution to a better understanding of the Majesty in the heavens I offer this reverent study of the attributes of God. Were Christians today reading such works as those of Augustine or Anselm a book like this would have no reason for being. But such illuminated masters are known to modern Christians only by name. Publishers dutifully reprint their books and in due time these appear on the shelves of our studies. But the whole trouble lies right there: they remain on the shelves." While he wishes that more Christians might engage the mighty thoughts of an Anselm, he recognizes that intellectual and spiritual laziness stand in the way, and so it is that he offers this little book "not for professional theologians but for plain persons whose hearts stir them to seek after God Himself."

Tozer says that for many people the "idea of God may lie buried under the rubbish of conventional religious notions." To the extent that any theist harbors childish, anthropomorphic, temporally or spatially bound projections about God, he weakens and diminishes within himself all of the spiritual disciplines, including study, contemplation, prayer, worship, and witness, as well as weakening the life of the mind generally. Like the Scriptures, which it so often cites and adroitly paraphrases, this little classic is "useful for correction." It belongs in the library (and better, in the hands) of every "plain" Christian reader.

Aside from scripture, this may be the most important book you ever read about God. It's that good. It's an annual re-read for my spouse, and will become one for me, since it's reawakened my awe of God and his majesty.

When I pick up a book this slim, I usually think I can knock it out in a short amount of time.

I was wrong.

Like a lot of C.S. Lewis books, the length is deceiving: you can't just breeze through them. The depth of intellect and the power of the words mean slowing down to absorb what A.W. Tozer is saying. It really is an amazing book of knowledge, insight and experience.

I also recognized a lot of problems with faith that Tozer addressed then--and it's worse now!

I can't recommend this book enough.

This is a classic work.
It is short and still covers many attributes of God.
What's so good about this book, is authors ability to give comprehensive and interconnected view of divine attributes; to show how they are connected and do not oppose each other.

I would recommend this book for everybody.
It's easy to read and will cause you to rethink your relationship with God for better.

This is a book about the attributes of God. Tozer does an outstanding job of pointing us to God by recalling those things which the Bible says are true of God Almighty.

A few ideas Tozer repeats throughout the book. These ideas are:

1) Modern man has lost the vision of the majesty of our God, and the first step to aquiring it is to determine to "Aquaint ourselves with God".

2) In attempting to see God the way that He truly is, we must believe in order that we may understand, not the other way around.

3) That God is unitary in His being and that all of His attributes work together perfectly without conflict with each other. Also, since God is infinite then all of His attributes are infinite as well.

I read a chapter from this book daily, and my hunger for His presence has certainly increased as a result. This book has helped me to see how futile I am in myself and how pride and worldliness are my biggest hinderences to drawing near to the Lord. This book will help you to see that nothing else in life really matters in comparison to our Almighty God.

This is a book that can be read over and over and always gives peace and comfort that comes from Psalm 23. Jesus is our Shepherd, and this book is written by a man who actually owned a sheep ranch and raised sheep. Through his experience of caring for his flocks, he is able to reveal why Jesus called us "my sheep" and why he is called "the good shepherd." In the past few years, I have given nearly 100 of these books away - to friends and strangers - and have asked them to pass the book along to a friend or stranger when they finish reading it. It is a true blessing and a lovely, well-written little book.

Don't miss out on this little book. It may be small in size, but it's big in impact. The correlation between a Shepherd and his sheep, and what we mean to God, is uncanny. In this book, you're given a glimpse into the true dept of Gods love for us. I also learned some amazing things about Shepherding and sheep. I was so taken by this book, that I bought several copies to share with others, not wanting them to miss out on this great message.

Great insight on the Love of God

The intricacy with which the author compares his job as a sheep farmer with the love of God opens one's mind to the all-incompassing work of the heaven Father on our behalf. However, just as he used his experiences to describe the shepherd's work which gives the reader a broader prespective of the attributes of God, I would have liked a little more of the mini steps that we, as sheep, can use to gain spiritual growth and be overcomers in the faith.

Former shepherd adds new meaning to a familiar psalm

The 23rd. Psalm is certainly one of the most familiar passages in the Bible. Despite that fact, author W. Phillip Keller adds new depth and meaning to it as he shares his experiences as a shepherd as they relate to Psalm 23. He shows us that a good shepherd is sufficient for all of a sheep's needs if he will but follow and obey him. He describes how a shepherd sets up a cast sheep (one who has fallen on his back)on his feet just as our Good Shepherd can set us up on our feet after problems. He tells the reader the importance of the shepherd providing water and good food for a sheep just as God provides us with physical and spiritual nourishment. I would recommend this book to anyone--believer and non-believer alike, and to anyone who is going through tough times and needs reassurance of God's love and guidance.

I for one grabbed this book because I heard Dr. Nick on "Focus on the family" in an interview and again on another radio interview and held him to be a Christian based diet author with personal experience and a wealth of knowledge about the medical side of getting thin. However, the book came across to me as an attempt to appeal to the masses and sort of put the credit to God on the back burner or off to the side or in the shadows and I can't be as inspired by that as a christian or for that matter, before my salvation. I did learn some great insights from Dr. Nick but I am a believer in the power of God to do everything and that just didn't come accross in this book. So with regret I say this book is a testament to Dr. Nicks' great triumph over the "Idolotry" of food as he said in his interview, but it just didn't get me to go along. I hope he will in the future let his faith be more prominent in his story telling and trust in our Lord for the results more than his publisher. If you would like a good hepful book as a compliment to this one may I suggest,Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

I found the book at a local second hand store on their free pile one morning while taking my walk. I felt drawn to the book and promply picked it up and took it home .As I read I felt a kinship with the author. He knew/knows the heartache of being overweight. I could identify with him and the trials that he has experienced. I found too that the book made me feel that I too could accomplish great things, as the author had done. I too so appreciated the fact that he turned his life over the to Lord and knew from where his success really came. I am sharing the book with a friend and when I get it back I am rereading it.

Well done, good and faithful servant.

motivation, desire, drive, push, ambition,
all are needed in abundance to lose weight. the more you are overweight the more you need them. constantly as your companions for the process of getting your body in good shape to do life.

It is not a diet book. it is not a how to do it book. it is a how i did it and why i did it fast paced, quick fun read.

being fat is sin. it stops you from being that good and faithful servant that the faith requires and God expects. the author leads the way, walks the path, is a real leader for this important insight.

thanks.

This isn't a typical "diet" book, which I like. I've read enough diet books in my life to understand the basic concepts. Instead, this book chronicles one person's journey, including the heartache associated with being obese as well as the triumphs of losing signficant amounts of weight. It has been surprisingly motivational - I find myself thinking of the story throughout the day when I struggle with something, telling myself that if he did it, I can certainly do it too. I would definitely recommend this book to others.

This book will grab your heart and won't let go until long after you've read the last page, leaving fingerprints as a reminder of what matters most in life. You will breathe and bleed and cry for Reese and Emma ... Reese and Annie ... Reese and Charlie ... Reese and Cindy -- each pair sharing heart-healing actions with each other.

The book's messages arrive with felt force, like the resilient beat of a healthy heart, over and over and over ... reminding us that the heart offers redemption and renewal through an unknowable life-force that transforms as it purifies. Like the heart, this book has a pulse and a heartbeat that you will feel.

Read it and be moved, from smiles to sobs. Read it and be thankful for divine coincidence (also known as answered prayers ... that lead a heart surgeon to a lemonade stand and a girl who needs a new heart, that tease him out of grief and withdrawal to use his heartfelt, God-given gifts once again). Read it and shout, Hallelujah!

Where do I begin, our bookclub at Church read this book and it was the first time I read anything by Charles Martin. The book had me from the first page. I was mesmerized by the detail and research Charles put into the book. Saturday our bookclub went to Clayton, GA where the story took place, we ACTUALLY met and got our book signed as well as purchased his latest book. What a class act! He was so personable, honest and has a great memory for names.

We met at Persimmons discussed the book, took pictures and walked where the story began (Savannah and Main). Even took pictures of the cricket box outside of Reeves. We later had lunch on the Lake. It was a wonderful day for us all.

The book hit home in many areas, friendship, forgiveness, love and restoration. I'm personally using this author for Christmas gifts this year and looking forward to reading all his other books. You won't be sorry with this purchase, it's been a long time since I found fiction to be so inspirational! Thank you Charles, the pleasure of meeting you was ours.

The audio version of Narnia is one of my favorite things :). I have found that several ages enjoy them, not only children, my whole family has listened to them several times, and I even took them to work and my co-workers listened to them. They probably would be some what scary for young children.
Aslan the lion in this book is such a wonderful picture of Jesus, I have come to love Him more, such wonderful analogizes, that challenge you and cause you to think about life. The only complaint I would have is that some times I think Aslan's voice is a little silly, not quite deep enough, but that's my only complaint.

27 years ago my English teacher at a private international boarding school in Malaysia read this book to me in class. Wow! A dramatic, exciting, story about a true adventure that includes that angst of a Christian trying to understand and do what he believes God wants him to; including leaving home and being a missionary at 19!

The author writes well and the reader can feel Bruchko's emotions, smell the humid jungle and the unwashed bodies sleeping in hammocks in smoky huts. You live the adventure with the writer and Bruce Olsen helps you reflect on your own journey of faith as you observe, through reading, Bruce's personal pilgrimage and adventure.

I have read this book several times and am now reading it to my own students at the international boarding school I currently teach at in Korea.

If you have ANY interest in missions or young people or Christian faith or adventure (or any combination of these) then buy and read this book. Well written, exciting to read; enjoy it!

This book is an outcry for those who want to see a Christian life given to God to serve whatever purpose that He has. The story is of a man, Bruce Olsen, who as a child comes to know God through Jesus and begins to be persecuted by his parents who eventually kick him out as a young teenager. The book is a story of Bruce's life thereafter, in which he constantly is given to seeking and trying to find the will of God and the place where he needs to be. It is an illustration of someone doing the work of the Almighty and being blessed for it and being taken care of out of nowhere when he had nothing and noone else to look to. This book should be read, and it will be read quickly by those who pick it up, by any person who claims to be a Christian. It may shock many to see the way they are living is nothing like the way that it should be, and this book is a good example of that life.

Not one of the worst books I've ever read but pretty close. Sorry I bought it and am not passing it on to friends. Perhaps it was the subject matter that first intrigued and in the end alienated me but I had to force myself to finish because I couldn't believe the plot. I kept hoping for some relevant message. Mary Magdalene, the original feminist and Mary the Mother of God, the worn out, bitter, stay at home Mom? I won't even try to describe her take on Jesus. Not my cup of nectar. I'll certainly make every effort to keep this book a "secret".

I'm gushing about this book all over the place

It's embarrassing to say this, but I was told to read this book by a friend who gushed about it. Normally, I run away from books that are gushed about. But I had to read it. She stood over me until I did. Now it's my turn to gush. Read this book. If you're looking for everything in a book: a great read, beauty, real characters, adventure, action, secrets, and deep meaning, well, you've found it. Now I'm gushing.

Too convenient explanations for my liking

Though the cover states "What the DaVinci Code only hinted at, this brings to life" is only partially true. Yes, it shows Mary Magdalene as Jesus's companion and intellectual peer, but no, it doesn't reveal any more of their relationship. In fact, it shrouds in diffucult prose what their relationship was, how they spent their time together (other than walking everywhere silently), and how they collectively orchestrated Jesus's resurrection to fulfill prophesy and give the people the Messiah they so desperately needed and sought. Through Mary's voice, it turns the miracles, the parables, and the events described in the Bible as basically misunderstood by the disciples, and therefore calls into question their historical and spiritual validity. This viewpoint, though creative and well-composed, made it all too convenient for me. I'm no Biblical scholar, but I do know some of the pivotal points in the Gospels, and what's more miraculous to me is how Mary Magdalene, whether clothed as herself or as John the Less, is at every one of them and has an explanation as to how they each came to be that's at odds with what's recorded in the gospels. I would agree with an earlier reviewer who found the ending a disappointment. I won't go into it, in case there's a reader out there who doesn't want me to give it away, but be prepared - it will let you down. DaVinci code went further than this, without going into all the details of Mary's (Miriamne's) life. Read it for the interesting perspective, but don't read it for salacious and informed details regarding Mary's and Jesus's relationship.

Perfect!

I can't count the times I cried reading this book. Or the times I laughed. Or the times I wondered at how the author made such perfect sense of all the stories, interpretations, arguments, historical events, warring religious factions, as well as getting under the skin of each and every rich and delicious character. My understanding of what might very well be a true "Truth" as I read got clearer and clearer and if I wasn't crying or laughing, I was going aha! yes! could be! why not? never thought of it that way! wow!

The theology is brilliant. The philosophy is brilliant. But it's also a brilliant read. This is a historical novel so it has all that those who read historical novels could want: an Alexandria, Egypt when the Great Library still beckoned, the Holy Land when the temple was the center of Jewish belief, Rome when Tiberius was emperor. It has adventures and quests and love and despair and thrill and danger and derring-do and, best of all, Meaning. The story means something that will stay with you long long after you close the book.

I've read a few reviews that loved the book but said they had a little trouble at first with the style of writing. But that's perfect too. It's like reading Gone With the Wind, the King James version. It's literature on a high level but in no way does this mean "difficult." It means this is a real writer telling a real story that needs to be told.

Although well written, this book takes all the writings of the New Testament regarding Jesus the Christ and his followers as not only ordinary, but, provides a story line that discredits any miraculous happenings, including the resurrection of Jesus. The book provides information on the times and geographical areas mentioned in the New Testament and develops the personalities of various followers of Jesus in ways that are most interesting. However, I would caution anyone planning on reading this book to know that all miraculous events will be given a non-miraculous context.
