Rand Corporation

A non-profit institution that addresses the Public and private sectors around the world. It was established on May 14, 1948 as Project RAND. The articles of incorporation include the purpose of its creation:
To further and promote scientific, educational, and charitable purposes, all for the public welfare and security of the United States of America.

Paper may seem a bit dated but it is difficult to find more recent information and this is probably more than enough information to get you off the ground if you a contemplating a practical application.

This closest I can find to the title is his item that is still available.

Book really specifically designed for English-speakers working with Chinese business people. Appendixes are quite helpful by aggregating words under a single heading such as "Information Technology". It certainly beats trying to use a standard dictionary to translate English business terms into Chinese which is not only time-consuming but may lead to embarrassing errors.

This book was recommended to me by a Taiwanese friend -- the recipes are authentic, and tasty -- and very easy to understand. Each recipe is simple and straightforward -- but on presentation, all of the meals are beautiful!

I cannot believe that there are 18 books that my mother authored, are listed for sale on the internet!Where are the rest of the 29000 or so copies ?
With all these colored photos, published back in 1970's and such a low low original price of eight dollars each, it still beat all the current cookbook prices...Why are they still on the market without being used by some good home?

Fun to learn Mandarin Chinese...even for adults!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-02
As a learner who struggles to find time and motivation to keep up my studies of Mandarin Chinese, this book is truly the answer! Of course, nothing replaces willpower and self-discipline, but this book is so cleverly structured that you'll find renewed enthusiasm to learn as you work through each page.

With plenty of clear vocabulary lists, reading comprehensions and fun puzzles to help re-inforce your learning, you'll be surprised to find that your grasp of the language deepens fairly quickly.

Being aimed at young students of the language, the material does begin with typical matter such as age, school grade, family etc. But by focusing on conversation essentials, you can easily start building up your own rudimentary questions and answers. By chapter 3, you'll be able to write short descriptive essays about your family and background.

There is clear and consistent use of English, Pinyin and simplified Chinese. The bad news for some is that there is no emphasis on traditional Chinese in this book (not a problem if you want to focus on learning the language for use in mainland China, as opposed to, say, Hong Kong)

You'll need the textbook version of this workbook if you want audio CDs to help with pronounciation. Personally, I find that using this book helps me strengthen my reading & writing, whilst I rely on audio courses (such as Liz Scurfield's cassette/CD guide) to improve my speech and listening.

All in all, I highly recommend this book as an essential companion to developing your progress in Mandarin Chinese. It works faster than you think, and echoes the classroom methods you used back in your schooldays to learn English as your first language! To me, it seems the most logical and pain-free way to pick up a second language!

An accompanying VCD gives a glimpse of the full experience

The collaborative production of Vibeke Bordahl (Senior Researcher, Danish Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies, Copenhagen) and photographer and Chinese culture expert Jette Ross (1936-2001), Chinese Storytellers: Life And Art In The Yangzhou Tradition is a remarkable and informative study of the ancient Chinese art form of narrating classic stories. A survey of the history of this practice, as handed down from master to student, precedes several adventurous and vivid tales, each presented both in English and in the original Chinese. Black-and-white photographs offer a visual glimpse of the storyteller's gestures and poses, and an accompanying VCD gives a glimpse of the full experience of a master storyteller's craft. Chinese Storytellers is a unique and highly recommended addition to Chinese Culture Studies collections and supplemental reading lists.

A real surprise of a textbook

I was loaned this book initially, and started reading it expecting something as dry as Dulbecco or a myriad other textbooks in virology. Frankly, I have never read an advanced textbook that is as well put together to cover the ground and yet does so in wonderfully readable style. Really an excellent book. These guys should do more textbooks. Their editing style is just wonderful.

The only negative comment I have is that most chapters have some weird typos and grammar. But I chalk that up to both editors speaking English as a second or third language, and many of the contributors being in the same boat. But that is really quite minor. If they could get someone involved in editing their books who is an excellent English proofreader they would polish their gem.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding viruses.

Contemporary Japanese Literature: An Anthology Of Fiction, Film, And Other Writing Since 1945 is a collection of some of the finest written works in Japan, offering English translations of stories by nearly two dozen authors. Selected by editor and Harvard professor emeritus of Japanese literature Howard Hibbett, Contemporary Japanese Literature is the perfect smorgasbord to experience post-World War II Japanese writings. Contemporary Japanese Literature is particularly recommended for college library shelves and personal literature collections.
