Excellent! A must-have reference for on-call!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-11
This book has long been considered an excellent pocket reference for on-call pediatrics and quick-reference topics. Even past editions seemed more useful to me than even the excellent Harriet Lane handbook. With the 10th edition, the Hospital for Sick Children Handbook has greatly improved on its previous formula. It is more detailed, more complete and up to date with the latest information and standards of care.

Strengths include the new fold-out emergency drug reference card and fold-out flowsheet on common emergency conditions like anaphylaxis, status epilepticus and hyperkalemia. If the book has any weakness, it is that the print is quite small and the book is a little heavier than the 9th edition. But again, there's way more information!

This book is highly recommended to all pediatricians!

A great book for seizing market and mind share

Victor's book takes you through the entire process of creating a bookmercial - a cross between a book and an infomercial. It makes a compelling case for becoming a published author, which opens doors to speaking engagements, media interviews and panel appearances. Most important, it opens doors to customers and is perhaps the most effective way to reach even the most difficult to reach prospects. Victor's book is an easy read, packed with information that any business professional will find useful. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to take their business to a new level of profitability.

A must have book for serious students
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

I have an earlier version of this book published by Asian Humanities Press that has 12 chapters plus 3 review articles. It is a valuable book to understand Confucianism. It has material on classical Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism. This is one of Dr. Tu's earlier works and the writing style is academic. I also reacommend his later work, "Confucian Thought, Selfhood as Creative Transformation." The writing style is smoother in the later book, which is also valuable. For the book being reviewed, here are the titles of the 1st 3 articles: (1) The Creative Tension between Jen and Li, (2) Li as Process of Humaniztion, and (3) The Confucian Perception of Adulthood. It is fantastic that this book is back in print. I believe there is going to be an increased interest in Confucianism and the timing of this book coming back into print is fortunate. If you are interested in a practical (non-academic) book on Confucianism, I recommend the book by Robert Canright: "Achieve Lasting Happiness, Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Life."

Shimabukuro Sensei's book truly offers all serious students of budo a way to understand the meaning and philosophy behind karate and for that matter any martial art.

While it shows ample photos and examples of kihon, it is the explanation of the smallest principles underlying why we do what we do in the dojo that make it such a compelling book!

Well-written but consider pre-reading

This is really well-written - but as a parent I want to add that it might bother some sensitive souls, especially if they are going through something similar. I just saw it at the library and could really feel the pain of having his grandmother move away - although in some ways it deepened his relationship with her -and with others.

One tiny nit-pick: I wish his grandmother had been called "Nai Nai" (paternal grandmother, following official pinyin transliteration rules) instead of Ni Ni, but I was able to move past that. It could be a pet name that I had not heard of.

Her friendship with an unschooled lace maker's daughter immerses her in a controversial friendship, the problems of a very different family life, and eventual defiance of her mother's dreams in The Lace Dowry's provocative story.

This book consists of two parts. Part I is the introduction on the conception of Buddhahood and Part II is a version of Chapter 26 of the eighty-volume Avatamsaka Sutra. Ven. Cheng Chien has done an excellent work on the translation. For us, the learners in Buddhism, this is a book not to be missed. I wish Ven. Cheng Chien will do more similar writings in the near future. A well done writing that is very much appreciated!
