I picked this little book up, expecting just straightforward instruction on how to make useful knots for sarongs, ribbons, and neckties--which the book indeed delivers--but I was also pleasantly surprised to find some very lovely quotes, culled from literature through the ages, about the literal and figurative "ties" of our lives. Oliver does a wonderful job of introducing each section with thoughtful and engaging commentary, resulting in a handy, charming how-to, that is accessible, informative, and a treat to read! Definitely not your typical instructional book. I would even recommend it as gift.

This book covers fields of analogue integrated circuit synthesis, IC physical design and constrained optimization. It collects major contributions of UC Berkeley Analog Group for about last 10 years. It brings field of analogue design into a totally new main stream and is still leading the trend. It comprehensively presents the whole developed methodology of mixed-signal circuit design to considerably detail level. For electronic engineer, it is an excellent reference book informing you the current progress in this field and for postgraduate engineering students, it is a very valuable text book. It is so far the best book in this field that collects latest inventions based on those widely published papers.

Most books on hip hop fall into the music category: not so TOTAL CHAOS: THE ART AND AESTHETICS OF HIP-HOP, compiled and edited by Jeff Chang whose contributors informatively and thoughtful consider the evolution, presence, and impact of hip-hop as a cultural expression and social commentary. From its commercial world to its cultural and artistic roots, TOTAL CHAOS offers students of sociology an excellent survey that runs the gamut from gender issues to artistic conflicts within the hiphop environment. The anthology includes interviews, first-person experience and analysis yet is lively enough for the general-interest library, as well.

Beautiful, detailed book

This impressively-produced volume covers Korean headdresses; hair ornaments; accessories; shoes; jackets and vests; pants, skirts and socks; and coats. There is a general introduction to Korean costume as well as introductions to each chapter, author biographies, a glossary and a bibliography. Every item is described in a short paragraph and shown in a high-quality color photograph which is diagrammed with exact measurements. In many cases there are illustrations showing how the garment would have been worn. Even those who have no interest in the subject will be fascinated by the care and attention to detail evidenced on every page of this book. The only thing it is missing is photographs showing the garments worn on people. Highly recommended!

This is a delightful rhyming tale of great imaginary proportion, making a run of the mill traffic jam into a kid's intergalactic journey. After my kids outgrew this special picture book, we included it in the dozens of boxes we gave away, and now, I'm sorry. The book provided tons of reading fun when the children were small. All of us loved it. Even the grown up kids in the crowd.

There is a plethora of literature on South Korea's meteoric economic development, however most of it is quite dated. The significance of this volume is that most valuable thing - hindsight! Written after South Korea's full and faster-than-expected recovery from the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis (as well as, of course, the other economic crises before it), this volume undoubtedly provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive views from the world's eminent scholars. These are the individuals who have read and often themselves authored past scholarly literature on the topic based on extensive research and available data at the respective time, and it is about time this was published to reflect the changes, hindsight, and new knowledge.

As far as the physical book goes, it is part of a really nicely produced series published by Routledge with special smooth matte-finish cover, high-quality bright white paper (I hate yellowish paper), and impeccable printing.

Definitely a MUST-HAVE for any advanced academic library. Hopefully they will make available a less pricey paperback version, as this is astronomically expensive for personal ownership! Highly recommended for majors, graduate students, and scholars, writers, economists, policymakers, etc.

best one I've seen

This book is great for recording many years' worth of trips. There are tabbed sections for itinerary planning, lodging, restaurant reviews, site-seeing experiences, shopping, other memories, and it also can help you keep track of important information like reservation numbers, visas, phone numbers/addresses of friends from home, etc.

If the book is the same as mine, it is a beautiful hardcover with an elastic closure that wraps around the book, with a spiral binding inside. My copy also has an illustrated couple in a hot air balloon surrounded by world landmarks (Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Pyramids, Statue of Liberty).

I haven't had a chance to use the book yet, but it seems like it will be a helpful and fun resource for planning and documenting my travels in the future!

When Yale ruled the world...

Ah yes, the classic text. I simply think that there could never be a better tool for learning than this gem. This would explain its continued use for so many years. Although by today's standards, it may be a bit rusty, but if there were a better book to educate we intermediate students on the basics of Chinese life, I would certainly like to see it. The authors may lean slightly Nationalist and slightly Confucian, but this is fine with me. The only complaint I have is the use of the eyesore known as Yale romanization, but I can get over it. Excellent text!

Best Travel Book I've Ever Seen

A friend from Massachusetts was coming to visit us in Virginia and borrowed this book from her local library. It is wonderful. It is clearly written and full of accurate information. We used it a lot both to decide where to go and for reference as questions came up as we travelled. As soon as she left I went immediately to Amazon.com to get a copy of my own. The photographs are beautiful but the information is the best ever. There is a lot to cover in Virginia and this book does it well.
