What an incredible book...I am not usually in the habit of buying books, but I couldn't resist when I saw the cover!! I am a huge Marlon Brando fan...an understatement to say the least. I have been hooked since I first watched "A Streetcar Named Desire." I don't think that there has been a more beautiful actor (and that even includes Paul Newman!) I have managed to get my hands on every Brando movie possible!! He had more than just a beautiful face though; there was a presence about him that was just mesmorizing! I get very upset when people speak of Brando's wasted talent, or what a sad joke his life has become..........we will always have his films and portraits to cherish! As it was stated in his biography, the world definitely "heard" from Marlon Brando!

My daughter loves to read her "mango" book and tell me which animals and fruits are on the pages. The lively and colorful images make this a fun book that also teaches deductive reasoning. Marti needs to find a mango to bring to his friend's pot luck dinner party -- his problem lies in that he doesn't know what a mango looks like. Marti sets out and actually learns what a mango IS by researching and discovering what a mango ISN'T. Definitely a book to read over and over. I can't wait to see what Marti's next adventure is.

Great reproductions, good text, great price

This book supplies excellent reproductions of most of Mary Cassat's most famous paintings. Having seen the original of the cover painting in the Art Institute in Chicago, I can say the often distorted color tones are accurately photographed here.

The text is a very readable discussion of how Mary Cassat's paintings reflect women's lives in the late nineteenth century. Those looking for more painterly criticism--composition, palatte, influences, brush-work, etc. will not find much of that in this book. As Digby Baltzell wrote in his "Puritan Boston, Quaker Philadelphia," by 1900 American painting was dominated by John Singer Sergeant, Cecilia Beaux, and Mary Cassat, all of whom shared a Yankee background (mixed with French for Cassat and Beaux), connections in Philadelphia, extensive European experience, and a firm place in the social elite. Without idealization or false nostalgia, Debra Mancoff shares Mary Cassat's loving regard for the importance of the feminine side of this world of gentility.

Did I say it was a great deal? If good reproductions in a solid hardback binding of a great painter's oeuvre are what you are looking for this is a very good buy.

The only knife book you will ever need

"Mastering Knife Skills" by chef Norman Weinstein is a marvel of a book - visually attractive, overflowing with facts both historical and culinary, the ultimate guide to the choosing of knives, their care and upkeep, and their optimal use.

This book fills a real gap in the field of cook-bookery. I, a serious amateur cook, have been cooking for over forty years now, and yet, in forty years of watching television cooking shows and reading cookbooks (of which I own some thirty), I have never before seen any teacher or TV chef relate - really relate in any serious and systematic, way - to this most important of all our cooking tools, at least not until the present illuminating book.

One could be forgiven for expecting such a book to offer mere dry factual knowledge on the subject, but in fact it is excitingly written and lavishly illustrated, and Weinstein's style has a flow and a sweep that pull the reader along from page to page, like a good detective novel, from slicing through dicing, to mincing to filleting to fabricating - yes, fabricating - a chicken. The accompanying DVD, furthermore, is graphic and extremely well presented.

I have seen Norman Weinstein in the classroom. He is an inspiring teacher, who wears his prodigious erudition lightly, and enlivens his classes with a quick and warm sense of humor. That same encyclopedic knowledge, sympathy and warmth come across in his book as well.

And one last note: following Weinstein's instructions I sat down for an hour with a sharpening stone and sharpened all my knives to an edge the like of which I have not ever gotten from the "professionals".

While this may not be the only cookbook you will ever want, it certainly is the only knife book you will ever need.

I purchased this book as a rememberance of a trip to the National Gallery in London. I was not the least bit disappointed. Works of Gainsborough, Turner, Stubbs, Constable, Cox, Whistler, Kokoschky are all included--over 150 color paintings all significant works. Is it tacky to say it also functions as a beautiful coffee table book? :o)

At any rate, it is a wonderful addition to any collection.

I'm taking medical microbiology and found this book quite helpful in preparing for my microbiology exams. Viruses and different types of bacteria are easy to learn by the use of this text. I also found very valuable for my microbiology exams: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
by Patrick Leonardi
This last study guide eliminated a lot of surprise questions that I would not have known without the help of this book.

This large-print biography is intended for children. The rather slim volume opens with an introduction on Michael's courageous win at the '89 French Open, then launches into a account of his early life and career up to 1992. Although understandably short on detail, the pictures are what make this book a real find, as there are many childhood photos and snapshots out of the Chang family album.

Essential for informed travel
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.

This beautiful and informative book (one of a series) is valuable for the armchair traveler as well as the actual tourist. History, photographs, simple and elegant maps, as well as interesting tidbits about people and places. For traveling with kids, it's invaluable. No threat of museumitis, here; lots of outdoors destinations to explore. The authors never preach, yet show convincingly that much is available - for family travel as well as adults - beyond multiplexes and outlet malls. They offer interesting and often "hidden" diversions and historically important places to visit: monuments, parks, houses, and more. It's produced lushly, to be enjoyed and admired - and it succeeds.
