Romance fans are going to love this oneReview Date: 2001-05-19
When the Parker brood find out that Mae has hired a nurse, they arrive en mass to check out the newcomer hired without their blessing. Claire quickly finds that everyone seems concerned with Mae and even feels as if she is part of this wild opinionated family, ruckus and all, for the first time in her life. Worse she feels she is in love also for the first time with her patient's nephew. However, like always once this job is done Claire will move on to the next one, but this time the memories will linger forever.
TEXAS FOREVER is a warm relationship drama that stars two formidable lead characters and an extended family for support, especially Mae, a lovable gruff grandmotherly type, who lovingly interferes in the lives of her cherished ones. The story line is fun but clearly stays within category framework, but fans still will enjoy Ginger Chamber's "West Texan" entry.

Beautifully, felicitously, and movingly writtenReview Date: 2004-09-30
"This remarkable book, often called 'the bible of ragtime,' has enthralled, enlightened, and inspired' generations of ragtime enthusiasts. The authors had the foresight to locate and capture the words and stories of surviving ragtimers and cast them in a beguiling form that, more than a half-century later, continues to work its magic on new readers. Though a few, isolated articles on ragtime had preceded publication of this book, They All Played Ragtime, at least figuratively, is where ragtime research begins.
The book also has undoubted flaws. It expresses attitudes that clearly reveal leftist political ideology of the 1930s . . . too sharply drawing and exaggerating class distinctions between the purity of 'folk' inspiration against the commercialism of 'Tin Pan Alley' craft. .. and some quotations are even taken out of context. .. Still, the power of the book and its tale remains. Most successive writers merely restate what they read in They All Played Ragtime."
I have just read this book in an old edition and have also fallen under its spell and that of the African American geniuses who created this subtle, supremely musical art. What a shame this book is not now more widely available. In my reading I have often stopped to put it down to marvel a bit over a turn of phrase or moving portrait, such as those of Scott Joplin and his idealistic white patron, the unsung hero, John Stark.

A Biography for The Common ManReview Date: 2008-09-27
More and his circle wrote at a time when modern English was just beginning to "jell," and Chambers has a gift for ferreting-out wonderfully striking, idiosyncratic lines in the writings of More and of his brilliant son-in-law and biographer William Roper, the Younger. These quotes are instantly recognizable since they turn up later in Robert Bolt's "A Man For All Seasons."
Chambers tends to gloss over More's faults. Was it accidental that Anne Cresacre, More's very wealthy ward, ended up marrying More's son? Did More's love of practical jokes border on the sadistic? More seriously, as a judge and as Lord Chancellor, More oversaw the burning of heretics. Chambers defends More by saying that the Church had condemned the heretics and More was merely doing his job as any magistrate was obligated to do. It's rather odd to see the champion of the human conscience retreat behind the fig leaf of "he was only following orders." Nonetheless, Chambers has a great imaginative grasp of More and his world and he brings the period to life.

3 Works By BrahmsReview Date: 2003-08-24
Perhaps not Brahms' best compositions, but interesting nonetheless. The edition is true to Dover's standards. Large format, clear printing, lies flat for easy reading. Recommended!

I heard the San Francisco Symphony preform Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Opus 17, Little Russian, recently and instantly fell in love with it.Though the shortest of Tchaikovsky's symphonies this is not a " Little Russian" symphony as distinct from a big one. The nickname refers to Little Russsia, an affectionate name for Ukraine. Anyways, after hearing it, I had a great interest to see the music to see how it was like and just to study it, so I bought at Amazon. com. It is really great: it has large unabridged, full score, Dover republication of the first three symphonies of Tchaikovsky. It's measures 9 3/8 x 12 1/4 which makes it really quite easy to read. I suggest that anyone serious in studying music should buy this because it's a great book to learn from!Nice cover artwork ,too! = )
