An action-packed, humorous book for 4 yrs and up

Mrs. Oberon is not, by her actions, an ordinary grandmother. When her son, Scrimshaw, calls her in distress because his son Sweeny is teething, there's only one thing that could help:

A cock-a-hoop honey cake!

In order to deliver the cake, Mrs. Oberon must navigate the Riff-Raff rapids, the Swagwallow Swamp and then take to the air in her Piper Cherokee. She accomplishes her mission, and all are happy once again..

The overwhelming message this book communicates is a grandmother's strong love.

My son just loves this book! It's the kind of book you can feel good about reading to your child!

A lively read, Call of Gold will prove of interest to leisure readers as well as readers of California history and culture.

essential overview of alternative therapies for cancer
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-27
Let me declare my interest. I am the author of this book. I wrote it because I believe the information is important. My wife died as much from her orthodox treatments as from the cancer itself - but how could we have avoided doing the orthodox treatments? This book explains very clearly why the orthodox treatments are problematic. It also explains why many of the so-called alternative and complementary approaches make sense. The problem for many people is that 'alternative' cancer therapies have been stigmatised with a sort of new-age label. I can tell you I am not at all new-agey. All the therapies mentioned in this book are rooted in good science and/or in credible personal experience. This book contains stories of more than a dozen people who have recovered from cancer using alternative therapies. If you have cancer, or if you know someone who has cancer, then this should be one of the books you should read. It is the companion volume to the much more detailed book Cancer: The Complete Recovery Guide, details of which can be found on my Fighting Cancer website

Great research, great reviews, and the maps are super!

OK, as the author's husband, and the guy who did the maps, I'm a tad biased, but here are some quotes from independent reviewers:

From The Civil War News:
"...Chamberlain at Petersburg should be required reading."
"Smith's careful research provides the strategic and tactical context of the movements of the Army of the Potomac in the weeks leading up to the 'Charge at Fort Hell'."
"In her preface, Smith writes that Chamberlain's words 'makes us feel as if we are settling in an armchair opposite the aging warrior, and hearing him share his most vivid remembrances...' Readers will no doubt agree."

From The Civil War Courier:
"This book needs to be in the library of every student of Joshua Chamberlain."
"Smith prefaces Chamberlain's writing with a detailed examination of Chamberlain's and the 5th Corps' experiences in the spring of 1864...and succeeds in setting forth the conflicts that developed among Union army commanders that had huge repercussions on the conduct of the late war."
"By itself, Chamberlain's manuscript is impressive. With author Smith's annotations and illumination it becomes an important work."

Both Diane and I hope you'll read and enjoy her latest book. And don't forget *Fanny and Joshua; the Enigmatic Lives of Francis Caroline Adams and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain* - the most comprehensive biography of JLC.

The ten sins of Winstom Churchill
Helpful Votes: 47 out of 49 total.

The ten sins of Winston Churchill

1) Refused political overtures with Adolph Hitler. He opposed Munich agreement signed between Hitler and Chamberlain - Peace in our time. The drama of WWII could have been avoided and Europe would have remained for the Europeans, and not `inherited' by millions of immigrants mainly from the third (or the fourth) world.
2) Caused Coventry to suffer severe damage during WWII from tough German air raids, destroying historical places (the Cathedral) and killing one thousand citizens. He could have avoided this drama if he had given orders to the British air force to intercept the Germans, but he didn't because he was afraid the Germans might know the British had already invented an early warning system called the `Radar'.
3) He waited in the WWI until French territories were `invaded' before intervening while England's interest required her to support France rather than wait. The disputes between Russia, Austria and Germany were multiplied when they `felt' England was `not interested'.
4) Churchill made the same mistake in WWII and waited until France capitulated in June 1940. His main concern was to `devour' the French Fleet under the pretext France might not be able to fight from her overseas colonies.
5) Following the Boer war (1905), Churchill, in split personality, caused the division of the Cabinet between Liberal Imperialists (Asquith, Grey, and WC) and Little Englanders represented by all the rest. He regarded France `the decadent and frivolous grasshopper', whereas most of the cabinet correctly foresaw the best interest of England was to keep France as an ally - to protect the French coasts, hence the British. It was important for Britain to enter any war with a united government.
6) Had it not been through the interference of Lord Kitcheners, Churchill could have alienated the whole Muslim World by taking the offensive against Turkey. He mobilized the fleet to obstruct the delivery of two German Gun Boats to the Turks in WWI - and to sink them if necessary. (Russia was alarmed by the arrival of such battleships at the back doors of the Black Sea). WC sought by his action to neutralize the vacillating Turkey; another miscalculation.
7) His miscalculation came in 1915-16. WC was responsible for the fiasco of Gallipolis landing on the Dardanelle - a combined Anglo/French military operation mounted to occupy the Ottoman Capital - Constantinopole -Istanbul that failed with severe allied losses.
8) As Chancellor of the Exchequer he is responsible for the unfortunate economical collapse of GB in the early twenties by the return to Gold Standards resulting in `deflation' and causing massive unemployment, miners and general strikes - leading to world depression. (Given the fact that Britain was then an endless Empire)
9) He advocated the use of force to break worker's strikes (miners and other) [[WC expressed admiration of Benito Mussolini methods calling him `the Roman Genius, the greatest lawgiver among men'. WC never had the charismatic aptitudes of the Italian Leader to arouse popular loyalty or enthusiasm, anyway]]. Why did he change attitudes during WWII remains an enigma buried with him forever?
10) His egoism led him to support King Edward VIII during the abdication crises in the hope that he might be appointed Prime Minister if the King did not abdicate. The lover abdicated, and the WC fell to disfavour for, alas, only a short time, until May 1940 to bring the world back to score (1) above.

Norris is one of the finest of short story writers. Because she is an artist rather than a commercial writer, she can devote her time to this literary form which is no longer lucrative. And how carefully crafted her stories are; they should be read aloud, in order to savor the music of their rhythms. Of special value is the insight given into mature lives. Writers who celebrate youth exist in abundance, but how many have mirrored the particular joys and sorrows of later years? The title story of this volume, which became a movie with Julie Harris and Jason Robards, Jr., does for maturity what Salinger's CATCHER IN THE RYE did for youth. It is more than a great holiday tale. It is a classic, alone well worth the price of the book!

Listening is an inspiration!

Review Date: 2000-03-15
Both inspirational and humbling to listen to the voice and intellect of such a great man. Such command of the English language and speaking skills unmatched! After listening to him speak you will see how pathetic in intellect and moral character our politicians of today are. I've finished his biography as well and coupled with these speeches he emerges as one of the greatest men of our or any time. I cannot recommend enough these tapes or his biography, it filled me with a renewed sense of purpose and conviction in life. If there was a phrase to sum him up it might be "never give up" on life or one's possibilities to achieve. Buy these tapes!
