Dr. Peterside has done an excellent job with this very readable volume.
Wealth Effect takes a holistic approach to Africa's plaques.
The analysis is thorough, fresh and insightful.
Historical, cultural and psychological factors are taken into account, in trying to tackle Africa's monumental ills.

The author's optimistic tone is palpable, as one goes through this thought provoking book.
Hence, the solutions proposed appear within easy grasp.

Africa cannot escape its misery without changing its political culture.
It has been said that "states like men are built of character"
To paraphrase Mr. Lee the former prime minister of Singapore, Culture (character) is destiny.

Kleptocracy is not democracy. To paraphrase Fela kuti, a famous Nigerian musician, what we have is "democrazy."

In conclusion, the depth and breadth of Wealth Effect makes it a must-read for anyone interested in evolving Africa.

After going through this book, am truly impressed by the breadth of the author's grasp of contemporary global issues as it relates to Africa. Its also quite interesting to see how a wide array of thought-provoking questions, critical problems and policy solutions for the continent are compressed in a concise manner within this book - serious recommended reading for anyone who cares to know or desires to explore the so-called "final Frontier".

Wealth Effect is not only an important and meaningful book, it is a must-read for those who care to know about Africa's untapped potential, and its quest to gain a respectful presence in the global economy . The author does a brilliant job succinctly delineating the myriad of past and current problems, obstacles, and solutions to ponder. While it is very comprehensive, it is easy to read.

Watching History Repeat Itself

Gilbert -- in one of his earliest books -- gives a detailed analysis of how the world appeased the great dictators, the missed opportunities and the willingness to abandon allies in the face of adversity. What is particularly relevant is the extent to which history seems to be repeating itself today with the way in which Europe (and others) handle Iran. The tactics are the same -- on both sides.

An Indispensable History of Failed British Diplomacy
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-15
Many students of World War II and the interval between World War I and World War II have wondered how British diplomatic policy could have been so disastrously wrong about Hitler and Nazi Germany, and how that policy could have been maintained and pursued in the face of so much evidence that Hitler was an evil, dishonest and unprincipled negotiating partner, and bent on war, despite his protestations to the contary.

Martin Gilbert and Richard Gott set out to answer that question in 1963, at a time when the immediate passions of World War II had cooled, but when the question, then unanswered, was fresh and vital, and they succeeded brilliantly. What they show is Neville Chamberlain and his ministers in close detail, what they thought and why they thought it. This book achieves what it sets out to accomplish: it explains in careful detail the origins and practice of British appeasement in the run-up to World War II.

The authors make two primary points, one obvious and one more subtle. The obvious point is that Chamberlain's government (and the Conservative Party more generally) was so eager to avoid another war that it simply ignored the abundant evidence that Nazi Germany was pursuing policies that were abhorrent to any constitutional democracy and that were bound to lead to another major European war. And in their ultimately unsuccessful effort to stave off war in Europe, there was virtually no step that Chamberlain's government would not take to attempt to mollify and curry favor with Nazi Germany.

The more subtle point is that, as the decade of the 1930s progressed, and particularly after Munich, the Chamberlain government either removed from government or ignored dissenting voices, and it also began to conduct its diplomacy almost in secret, bypassing the House of Commons and public opinion to the fullest extent feasible. And the more the Chamberlain government and its ministers pursued a go-it-alone, hothouse mentality, the more it became isolated from public opinion. No wonder that Chamberlain was unseated in 1940; the surprise is that it didn't happen sooner.

This sad story is all laid out it in great depth, literally on an hour-by-hour basis in the case of some of the major crises, such as Munich, and the Danzig negotiations of 1939. Beyond merely providing a chronology of these events, however, the authors provide the social and political context for the various events as they occurred, plus biographical sketches for some of the major actors within the Chamberlain Government.

For any student interested in the origins of World War II, this is, quite simply, an invaluable book.

An excellent book for prospective parents. A must read for Drs, labor and delivery nurses, and doulas. This book gave me insight on my three son's births and how early comments did affect their lives. It also increased my awareness of the importance of making positive comments at the births I attended and creating a loving, welcoming presence for the newborn. It does make a difference!

All expectant moms should read this

Review Date: 2001-09-10
The best part of this book is its collection of awesome, authenticated birth (and pre-birth) memories. They support the belief that babies are beings of a very high level of consciousness at the time of birth, to a degree that most people would never suspect. This book belongs on a list about spirituality as much as it belongs on a list about birth. The memories that many people are able to retrieve about their births indicate that tiny infants indeed come into the world "trailing clouds of glory". Their emotions and level of understanding at birth are those of fully evolved spiritual beings, who--one assumes--lose their memories of a former spiritual existence as they mature. Anyone who is truly open to the message of this book will be deeply moved by stories such as the one about the baby in the womb who was worried about his mother because he understood that she was bleeding and near death. After reading this book, you're very likely to want your baby to have as gentle and natural a birth as possible--and you just might be careful what you say in the delivery room!

A very complete and accessible guide to cancer
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-10
This book tells you what cancer is; what the pros and cons are with surgery, radiation and chemotherapy; what the other new mainstream treatments are; why cancer research is failing and what the alternative therapies are that many people are doing - often with great success: the additional diagnostic tests you might want to consider; the detox regimes; the diets, herbs, vitamins, supplements and other approaches that have helped. And it tells you about the pioneers that have been vilified despite anecdotal reports of success - and so on. This book aims to provide a complete picture of the world of cancer. And it does so without hectoring or vilifying people who hold different opinions. It recognises that we are all different and will make different choices. I should declare my own interest in this book. I am the author and I researched this book as a result of my wife dying from cancer (and from the direct effects of the treatment she submitted to). I vowed that I would not go the same way - but I needed to know what the options were. This book was written above all to inform myself. In the book I tell the stories of over a dozen people who recovered from their cancers using alternative approaches - and they used different approaches so I think it is fair to say there are dozens of cures for cancer - but you can't do them if you don't know what they are. And this book is written to be accessible. One reader wrote to me: " I devoured the entire [book] in one sitting. As I read hope grew and grew. I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You gave us hope when all we could see was despair and you gave us a path when we thought all was lost. "

Every year I try to get a good, fun, small gift that I can give to lots of people, kind of like a stocking stuffer. This is the one for this year! The book has cool illusions and tricks, and the toys are fun. You don't even need a Christmas tree--you can look at the TV too!!

One Man's Odyssey
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-21
What you have here is one man's odyssey of both mind and spirit, encompassing forty years of his life, during which time he thought deeply about all he went through. What you must know is that at the outset of this odyssey he thought of himself as a candidate for the Episcopal ministry. He was a virgin. At the end of this time, however -- well, judge for yourselves.
Of course, you must read the book. In it you will find this man's views on many subjects. What he thinks of guns. What he thinks of death, divorce, sex, relationships and love. And more importantly, most importantly, having abandoned orthodoxy generally, what he thinks of God.
His style is refreshing. He reads well out loud. And there are occasional bursts of reserved power that come like thunder claps when one hears him read out loud. He can be dramatic. But he can also be very persuasive.
For the most part in these essays he is matter-of-fact and to the point. And the gliding ease with which he guides one's mind from point to point in his arguments is pure skill, no accident.
There are poems too in this book. Philosophical poems, provacative poems, one even rather sexy poem and some that almost bring a tear to the eye. But there are no laughs. Not to say Chamberlain is humorless but in this case he is laying out food for your thought. And if you read this book, all 178 pages of it, you will find yourself doing just that, believe me.

Chronicle of a Thoughtful Man

Review Date: 2002-06-11
This neat little book of essays is the chronicle of a thoughtful, sometimes iconoclastic man whose life experiences ranged from growing up in a privileged class family to mixing it up with the blue collar set, from once wanting to be an Episcopal priest to questioning some of the Church's basic premises, from pondering the what-is-it of love to musing about the meaning of it all. In between are Chamberlain's insightful views on gun control, mathematics and death and divorce.
Reading "Don't Look at Girls Who Drive Volvo Station Wagons" is akin to listening to an intelligent friend, with brandy in hand by a cozy fireplace after dinner, ruminating, dispensing thoughts and wisdom and humor and even poetry. You may not always agree, but you will enjoy the evening.

An excellent account of what mankind, through its long history, has done with the remains of its deceased. Through what has been found, over the years,we have tried to piece together the cultures, religions, eating habits, diseases and every aspect of life by the peoples who have preceeded us.The little that we know has,to a large degree, been determined from clues presented when remains have been found. For such a relatively short book,of only 206 pages, including many excellent photographs, the authors have done an amazingly good job in describing what was done with the bodies, both intentionally and unintentionally, that have resulted in some remains being intact for ,not only hundreds ,but thousands of years.
Is it the fear of death, the fear of the unknown, the desire to honor and remember;or some underlying desire for everlasting perpetuity;that has challenged mankind and cultures to find a way for remains to be everlasting? That remains an unanswered question that has been with all civilizations and cultures;and as so well shown in this book;will likely remain, well into the future. One can only imagine how cluttered the world would get if a simple method of preserving a body forever, were ever found.

If you are interested in anthropology, archaeology, mummy studies, or pre technology man, this is a good book. The detailed descriptions of the remains, good pictures, and summaries of the scientific studies is very informative. This book is hard to get. I bought the last available copy in the US when I bought it for my Mummies of the World class. I highly recommend if you want to learn more about the remains of our ancestors and what the bodies can tell us, this is one of the best books for the job.

I have used this book, as a psychologist, for several years in its first edition and now in the later revision, as an adjunct to the therapy I provide for clients. I think it is excellent at helping people take more responsibility for their own behavior -- and as a result enjoy their lives more, realizing they really do have a choice about what they experience. In a step by step fashion, it takes the reader through a self improvement journey that is realistic, straightforward, and effective in building self understanding. Chamberlain's guidance is in the "cognitive-behavioral" tradition, and is very effective in engendering real progress. This book can be read on its own or used as an adjunct to psychotherapy. I highly recommend it.
