Jack Carter is an enforcer who works for London-based Crime Lords, the Fletcher Brothers. He discovers that a small time crook called Jimmy Swann is about to turn supergrass and this could have big repercussions for both himself and the Fletchers. He has the Christmas holiday to sort out the problem, or else face a long time in jail. A hard thriller written by the man who gave us "Get Carter"

I saw this show at LACMA and wanted this catalog but it was way too expensive for me - especially for a softbound. The numbers show helped me understand Johns' wonderfully logical, creative, individualistic, lovingly obsessive world. While the printed photos are miles away from the flesh of the encaustic and layered torn papers, it keeps his inspirational pieces close at hand. Yes, it is a must for you.

An extraordinary set of conversations
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-09
Former President Jimmy Carter himself provides the foreword to Jimmy Carter's Hometown: People Of Plains. Duane Hutchinson has compiled an extraordinary set of conversations with a variety of down-to-earth individuals who grew up with Jimmy Carter and includes his family, friends, classmates, and fellows in the community, as well as diverse views from local historians. A highly enjoyable book filled with illuminating conversations about the people who knew the former President when he was just an ordinary friend, Jimmy Carter's Hometown: People Of Plains is "must" reading for all friends, fans, and admirers of one of the hardest working, most beloved, sincerely admired and internationally respected of the post-World War II "ex-presidents" of the United States.

Wow, everyone sure seems to love ol' Jimmy Carter right about now! Kinda makes you wonder why we ever voted the grinnin' Ghandi out of office. Well, no, not really. Not if you're unlucky enough to still be cursed with memories of what it was actually like when Jimmy Carter was President. Anyway, for those of us still suffering malaise-inspired nightmares, Gary Allen's acidic (and, unlike Carter's writing, short-and-to-the-point) 1976 "biography" is a wonderful antidote. Inside, you will find the details of Carter's life before he was a virgin. Allen writes with a venemous wit and there's something delightfully cathartic in reading his sarcastic take on our 39th President, especially with all the recent talk of Carter being our greatest ex-President. (Though this is perhaps true if you consider Carter's greatest act within the White House was to eventually leave it...)

Carter becomes even more insignificant....

This book should be required reading because of Jimmy Carter's screw-up with the North Korean peace treaty and the hollow mockery that was his reception of the Nobel Peace Prize. I did not think that Lasky could do any more damage to the Carter presidency or follow up his brilliant "It Didn't Start with Watergate", but he did. This book plays out like a sit-com. In fact Lasky even gives them catchy nicknames: Lillian Carter, "Miz Lillian", Zebaziegnew Brezinsky, "The Hungry Professor", and James Earl Carter, Jr., "Wee Jimmy" (Once again Lasky presents political intrigue in a palatable manner on the ultimate micromanager in American politics.)
But yet there is a sense of shock which is consistently undercut by Carter's gaffes. For example, it was an open secret that Carter's staff were habitual cocaine and heroin users, and Carter himself had his own "mini-Watergate", where he misappropriated state funds to fund a private political poll. He bungled things so much that he could have taught Clinton how to be even more corrupt. I now feel lucky that presidents can only serve 8 years in office. This man is a case in point about why people shouldn't vote Democratic. The readers shall feel the same way after reading about the man who "grew up in hard times, when things were difficult"--Carter's words, not mine---

For anyone interested in the man (Carter) before he became President, and the strategies behind his successful rise to the nation's top elected office, this book is quite helpful. Glad makes excellent use of the materials available to her at the time. Also, her inclusion opf references provide ample jumping off points top anyone interested in pursuing either Carter's early political career, or Georgia/southern US politics in the 1960s and 1970s. Glad's writing style is eloquent, informative, and entertaining. An excellent investment for the political historian, or the average reader.

I first learned about the artist Joe Brainard in two articles published in Art In America in July 1997, written by Edmund White and by Carter Ratcliff. I saved those features and came across them recently. Sharing my renewed enthusiasm for this artist with a friend, he informed me that he had seen a wonderful retrospective of Joe Brainard at the Berkeley Art Museum last year and that he had purchased a fine catalogue of the exhibit. I was delighted to find this incredible catalogue at Amazon.com. A tremendous overview of this underappreciated genius with relevant text and fantastic color reproductions of exhibited work. Amazing to see work created 20-30 years ago that has so obviously influenced a generation of contemporary artists. This book is highly recommended to anyone interested in contemporary art. If you don't know the work of Joe Brainard, this retrospective will impress, and if you are already an admirer of this extraordinary talent, this is a must have for your art library.

Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan!
These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it.
Volume 3 contains "The Chessmen of Mars" in which the author introduces a Martian chess game, complete with rules and description. This game actually had a small, dedicated group of practitioners back in the 60s or 70s and you could buy sets of Martian chess. The other one introduces another earthman who travels to Barsoom(Mars) into a different part of the planet from John Carter's.
These books cannot equal the original John Carter trilogy but are nevertheless good ERB. ERB produced more quality book in the John Carter series than in any other series he wrote. including Tarzan.
All ERB fans who can afford them should buy these magnificant Leonaur Limited editions.
