Not just a house, design a whole neighborhood
Helpful Votes: 41 out of 44 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-17
Most of us like architectural books because we think, or possibly just dream of building our own ULTIMATE house. Here, however, is a book not on building a house, but on building an entire neighborhood.

It starts with a bit of history, the pattern books written in roman times. It brings them up to date with a survey of several American neighborhoods dating from turn of the century times. And finally it goes on to show what the authors have done as they designed blocks, sub-divisions and the like. It is intended to show what can be done to replace the common cookie cutter houses common in recent developments. It is a fascinating book that leads to thinking.

The term "Win-Win" has become an every day buzz word. I read Gerard's book nearly thirty years ago when the term was really something new. He actually coined the phrase "Everybody Wins." Virtually the same concept.
His examples are creative and pertain to real life situations. It is good to read a book by someone who has actually been there and done that. His other books are quite informative also. ;-)

A Great Place to Start!!! :-{D}
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-19
If you are interested in art theory from the perspective of artists and wish to read theory from centuries ago up to the last century, this is a great place to start. If you enjoy the Art in Theory series, this is a relevant addition to your reading. Art in Theory starts with writings from 1648 on. The earliest piece in this book is from some undated time between 1372 and 1400. It would be great if the book were expanded or if the Art in Theory series had another book added to it that stretched back to the earliest writings on art, but for now, this is the best book that I can find of its type.

C. E. O. Carter was perhaps the greatest astrologer of the 20th Century. His vast experience and intellectual brilliance combine to make this book essential reading for all astrologers, beginners and experts alike. Although this book has never been out of print since first published in 1930, Carter's stunningly profound insights are remarkably contemporary. It is a classic in the true sense of the word.

If you like photography and humor you will like this one. This a high quality book printed on glossy paper. The photos are astonishing sometimes black and white and others in color. The life through the eyes of those photographers is much more joyful. I would recommend this book to anyone. A+++

Opening the gates to other realms

When Lin Carter became the editor of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series, he began by reprinting the most important & arguably the finest fantasy writers of the previous 100 years -- William Morris, Lord Dunsany, James Branch Cabell, among others. And if that wasn't enough, he also put together several superb anthologies for the series, starting with this volume. In it, he offered selections from those writers, including some rare, seldom-printed pieces, along with copious & informative notes. And if he included a story of his own among the works of the masters, who can blame him? After all, he was largely responsible for seeing those masters into print once more!

Particularly interesting is the excerpt from Carter's own proposed fantasy epic "Khymyrium," which was never to be written. Packed with ideas & invention, it hinted at a vast worldscape which readers would have loved to explore ... but it remained an unrealized dream.

I was a young teenager when this book appeared over the Christmas vacation, and it made that time especially magic for me. Nowadays the fantasy market is huge, and there are countless anthologies of old & new material to choose from ... but this was one of the first, which helped pave the way for the fantasy revival, and still worth seeking out today. You can't go wrong with this vintage material!

For those of us who were there at the time, it will always have the flavor of some sweet secret, which only a few were lucky enough to experience. For what he did with this entire series, Lin Carter should be remembered by all who love quality fantasy. Highly recommended!

A "must" read for the Queen Mother's fans
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-18
This is a great insight written by a young military officer who was Equerry to the Queen Mother for 2 years. It's written with great respect and fondness of his experiences as her close personal assistant. A rare glimpse into the everyday life of the Queen Mother and her association and influence in the Royal Family. An endearing book that touches on her home at Clarence House, other members of her household, his duties, and describes her "little extravagences" like Lobster, strawberries in winter, champagne, and daily fresh flowers in all the rooms. He describes her other residences at Royal Lodge and the Castle of Mey in Scotland. Full of interesting little known facts and antecdotes. No scandals (she never had any)or unflattering gossip. You'll LOVE this book. Easy reading!!
