An Excellent Introduction to Japanese Art & Spirituality

Mr. Carter's new book provides readers with a fine introduction to several classical Japanese art forms, while it explains how these cultural arts function as "Ways" that lead to spiritual realization. The author's many years of experience in this field are clearly evident, and the book will appeal to readers well familiar with these disciplines as well as novices.

As a martial artist with 34 years of experience, I believe I've found a real gem! Prof. Robert E. Carter has certainly outdone himself with his groundbreaking new book, The Japanese Arts and Self-cultivation. In it, Carter explores Japan's unique approach to ethics by focussing in on and examining 5 examples of its arts: Aikido, landscape gardening, the way of tea, the way of flowers, and the way of pottery. Much of this exploration takes the form of interesting personal experiences and lively interviews with great masters of these arts.

The various arts of Japan are perceived by many people either in a wholly pragmatic, utilitarian manner -- as practical methods of achieving some end -- or as mere artistry and aesthetic affectation. Some people are able to appreciate that the application of the philosophical and psychological dimensions of such training can aid technical prowess. Beyond this, precious few seem privy to a much grander vista; specifically to a realization of the extreme importance of the social, ethical, and spiritual domains, and the impact that training in the Japanese arts can have on one's personal development in these areas. All of this is clearly and forcefully articulated by Carter in this book.

In his typical fashion, Carter uses a cross-cultural, comparative approach to clarify eastern and western positions and further elucidate his thesis. The most obvious characteristic of all these arts is that they are intensely physical practices and, thus, they perfectly exemplify the Japanese means to ethical training -- the cultivation of ethical behaviour through concrete, physical action. This stands in stark contrast to the western approach to ethics which is predominantly analytical, academic, and intellectual. Carter's profound conclusion: morality and ethics are not learned through mere words, by memorizing lists of rules, but by actually, physically practising them! And the Japanese arts are avenues that can amply provide such practice. In a similar vein, an authentic morality is not based on a fear of punishment or a promise of rewards (a position that seems predominant in western religious ethical thought) but is dependent on the cultivation of specific pro-social attitudes, in particular that of empathy, a felt connection to others, and the compassion that results. It is this which is more correctly understood to be the true source of authentic ethical behaviour, and it is to the cultivation of these various attitudes that the Japanese arts aim and excel.

Throughout his book, Carter offers a penetrating analysis into the Japanese view of ethics and the cultural methods developed since time immemorial to cultivate its values. From the arts as mere practical skills, to the arts as pathways to self-realization (the discovery of one's connection to/oneness with the universe), to ethical cultivation and a strong social focus, the thing that Carter makes clear is that a practice of the different arts impacts all of these levels of self-development simultaneously. Ultimately, an immersion in the physical practice of an art can lead to the psychological state of emptiness/no-self that not only is the source of all unconscious, skilful action but is also the basis for all empathetic, ethical behaviour -- of our ability to come together in correct human relations. So far, I have not yet come across another book or author that deals with this important, seminal topic in such depth and in as clear and engrossing a manner.

In conclusion, I believe that this outstanding book would be of great interest not only to philosophers and students of philosophy (those interested in ethics generally and in Oriental ethics and arts specifically) but to the general public as well. In particular, I recommend it wholeheartedly as essential and necessary (as well as relatively easy and engaging) reading for every serious martial artist who wishes to develop a greater understanding of the deeper dimensions of the arts. I also highly recommend, as an intimate companion to this book, Carter's previous book, Encounter With Enlightenment: A Study of Japanese Ethics (Suny Series in Modern Japanese Philosophy), which provides important philosophical foundations for the very same topic.

Leonaur Ltd. is publishing the definitive Edgar Rice Burroughs 21st century editions. These usually contain 2 books of the different ERB major series in order - thus far John Carter, Pellucidar, and Carson of Venus. In the future, possibly Tarzan!
These books are handsome and my rating is mainly based on this - the ERB fan knows best about the rest of it.
This volume contains the 11th and last John Carter of Mars book. It actually is 2 short novels, one of which was actually written by one of Burroughs' sons at ERB's request. To the last book the John Carter series mantained a high standard of quality.

Rip-roaring Tales of Adventure!

This was my introduction to the John Carter of Mars (I still live!) series of adventure Sci-Fi when I was a teen. Prior to this I had only read the first Tarzan book from ERB.

My father was a newspaper editor and he received new publications to read/review. This set of two final tales was one he brought home and gave to me when it first was republished by Ballentine books.

I devoured these two as a teen and was hooked. I subsequently bought all of the Mars/Barsoom series, considered one of ERB's best series. I also wound up reading the Pelucidar series which takes place at the center of the earth.

Although not the best of the Martian series, this combination of two short novellas was my introduction to it - hence my fondness for these two.

I am glad for these nice hard-cover editions from Leonaur. There are some typos but the editions say they preserve the original spellings so perhaps that's the case. I've purchased hardcovers of these Leonur editions of the Martian and Pellucidar series and plan to enjoy them all over again. Thanks for re-publishing them!

Some of my favorites of the Martian series were: the first two - A Princess of Mars and The Gods of Mars which form a single tale, A Fighting Man of Mars (my favorite), and Synthetic Men of Mars. Suspend some disbelief, sit back and journey to Mars where noble red men and beautiful red pricesses battle against evil, and also to the center of the earth (Pellucidar).

These ERB tales continue in the vein of Jules Verne but are much more immeditate and satisfying as adventure tales. For example, Verne spent hundreds of pages getting to the center of the earth, found little, and then they left. ERB will get you there in a bore machine in a few pages, and leave you there to explore a land filled with primitive men and women, fierce animals and an amazing landscape to explore.

I have enjoyed the entire "Rumor has it" series. I especially liked this book. This book dealt with something that most romances don't always deal with as in the exploitation of children or teenagers and how that can affect their life. I would love to read any other books by Mrs. Richards she is an exceptional writer.

Small town Lewiston, AR harbors big secrets finally brought to light in JUDGING JUSTINE. JUDGING JUSTINE concludes the highly successful Rumor Has It miniseries by Penny Richards with a bang.

Singing sensation Justine doesn't want to flaunt her pregnancy, if only because that's what everyone in Lewiston would expect. She knew she should have come back sooner, but the painful anticipation was enough to keep her postponing her return. At last, as her mother lies dying, Justine returns to the town that holds the secrets to her emotional scars. Her mother dies without a word being passed between mother and daughter, without even learning that Justine is pregnant, leaving Justine filled with sorrow and remorse.

Justine knows her return to Lewiston will provide grist for the gossip mill. Distancing herself physically and mentally from her family and Lewiston has been the only way to survive. With her mother gone, perhaps Justine can finally tell her secrets to someone, so that she can rid herself of the resentment and anger she's carried around for seventeen years. With the baby coming, maybe she can risk telling Wes that he's going to be a father. But then, that also brings incredible risk and fear.

Wes Grayson fell hard for Justine seventeen years ago. No other woman had made him feel complete. Thinking she was out of his system, he found his way backstage one night in Chicago only to learn he still has it for her. Now his paintings only present her face over and over again, just as her memory lingers in his imagination. It broke Wes' heart when Justine abruptly left Lewiston seventeen years ago; little does he know the same secret that drove her suddenly away could cost him his heart again.

A shocking, memorable tale, JUDGING JUSTINE demonstrates Penny Richards' story-telling style at her finest. A captivating of secrets revealed, JUDGING JUSTINE finds its way to healing and love. Entertaining and emotionally riveting, JUDGING JUSTINE concludes a miniseries made of keepers. Very highly recommended.

Steven Carter's wide-ranging mind and unsettling voice intelligently confront incipient tendencies in popular culture that threaten our national sense of who we are and who we ought to be. In a number of his essays analyzing technology's usurpation of the biological, Carter becomes a contemporary Tieresias, calling us to understand that some of the most comfortable and pleasing of our entertainments have a dark and destructive underside....Such a voice ought to be heard.

I have sat through three different lecture courses from Dr. Carter, and his ideas, lucid and insightful, are found in this book. Anyone interested in postmodern theory, from quantum physics to chaos theory to Las Vegas as an allegory for all of contemporary society, should read this book. It has a hefty pricetag, but it is well worth the dough for scholars of literature or postmodern theory. It is worth the dough for those that are not scholars, as well, since it will make you wish you were a scholar of literature and postmodern theory. A big-brained, but quite good, read.

Ethan Howland should be commended for not only producing a compelling story that will grab the attention of your kid, but also addressing some very real issues in the lives of teens. The book hits on a conflict that every young person must grapple with: the fall from grace of the hero that is your older sibling, relative or friend. Still, despite the disappointments faced by Howland's protagonist, the love remains. Through the disappointments, our young lobsterman finds strength.

I found the story compelling, exciting, and believable. The climax will keep a young reader revitted. My 13-year old absolutely loved it. Perfect beach reading.

The book was fantastic and I applaud the author's first work. Howland conveys location, emotion and situation with fantastic clarity. The story moves along pausing only to allow the reader to take in the imagery of the Maine coast and the mixed and conflicting emotions that people face in life. It is too bad that books like this have to be classified as "juvenile fiction" because the writing is much better than many young readers may appreciate. Beautifully written. Interesting story. Nice lesson in life.

Great book! It's the first of a 12 book series-LONE STAR COUNTRY CLUB and Ms Rimmer sets the stage for the characters and their stories as only she can. We are introduced to 4 bachelors who find a baby girl on the 9th hole of the exclusive golf course. She has a note attached to her blanket-it says "this is your daughter, Lena" but doesn't tell whom she belongs to. Well, all 4 know it is possible that she belongs to him. Flint Carson takes charge thinking he and Josie Lavender are the parents. He hires Josie to be the nanny but Josie has her own agenda she wants Flynt Carson forever. Flynt and Josie have a rocky romance-Flynt thinks himself not worthy of a wife and children but Josie gets him to come around and realize she is the love of his life. I'm ready to read the other 11 now.
