The author was recently featured in a article in the Coppell Gazette, a local free newspaper. Among the flurry of quotes concerning himself were these gems: "This is a grain of sand on the beach of my potential" (sound familiar to the review below?) "Pick a star - that's what I'll shoot for" "I didn't choose writing - writing chose me. God chose me as an instrument" "Other people need to read this". "I don't want to check the sales" (you're ranked #2,607,620 as I write this, Chief). The article went on and on, throwing similar statements around like confetti. The book explores the pain of lost love, and I would predict the last poem is about when the girl realizes she's dating an artsy, self-adsorbed blowhard. But I'll give him 5 stars anyway, just for the self-confidence, and a sincere wish for good luck....

The Hottest Logic Book Ever!!!

I was fortunate enough to not only learn from this clear, concise, excellent text, but to take the course with Dr. Carter himself. Just recently a friend saw it on my bookshelf and exclaimed, "OH, we used this in my deductive logic class at Harvard; it was so much more student-friendly than Copi's." Dr. Carter is a great writer, logician, and teacher. Due to these factors, this book can be used independently, or as part of a class, to learn the art of logic.

Great introductory logic course book that makes the concepts of formal logic easy for just about anybody. Carter has a great sense of humor, unfortunately some of that has been edited out by the publishers but it is still a great introductory text book.

As a student, it's great.

I began my long logic study with this book. It does an excellent job of laying the ground work, teaching the student rule by rule and with examples that are easy to understand and sometimes entertaining even (e.g. there are a few linguistic proofs on Lord of the Rings). Carter does an excellent job of writing as a teacher to a student instead of a logician to other logicians. That is not to say that the text is remedial, only readable. As the student becomes more familiar with logic Carter goes into more depth and complexity. This logic book is being used in a lot of universities now and I hope it spreads to all of them.

Having used the previous edition for two years in my Deductive Logic class at Evangel University, I would recommend it wholeheartedly for Formal or Deductive Logic. As a guide to informal or natural language logic, it is useful (I use some of his categories of natural language fallacies,) but it lacks the depth of a dedicated text. This is not a weakness. For the students, this is a great text with plenty of examples and exercises. Not only is the layout useful for learning but also easy for teaching. Having used Irving Copi texts for a number of years, this is a tremendous improvement.

I lament the inclusion of Copi's favored notation for conditionals, because it seems less intuitive than the arrow for conditional statements and double arrow for bi-conditional statements Carter used in the previous edition. In logic texts I have seen both types of notation used with equal frequency. But this is probably a marketing issue.

In many cases he uses the same examples throughout the book. This is great, because not only does he engage the intuition of the student using familiar material, but shows how analysis can be taken to different depths and how different tools may be applied in various circumstances to the same problems.

The book needs to be studied well before used as a text. His formal rules, though perfectly apt for the material are used differently from Copi's. One can't leap easily from Copi to Carter without a bit of familiarization with Carter's method. I found myself wanting to use Copi's rules occasionally. The payoff is in staying with Carter's evenhanded, well-paced treatment of the topic. I found that few students were left behind in a class of 40, even when I blazed forward with new concepts every class. This book is a treat for the educator, and reveals the underlying elegance of the discipline for the student.

Someone at a youth hostel in Ireland gave me this book back last summer when they heard that I was into traveling in the areas that Bill wrote about. I read it on a lark because at that point I had ran out of everything else to read and was down to my guidebooks-always a last resort! I was very engrossed once I began it, and didn't put it down until I finished it. Not exactly a travelogue, or a war diary, or even a memoir in the traiditional sense, yet it manages to combine elements of all three effectively. Don't let this little gem slip away. Once you read it, the characters will become so real to you and their situations so familiar that you'll feel as if you went through the Sarajevan seige yourself.

Fools Rush In is sentimental without being sappy and bold but not arrogant. The book is a great combination of an easy read with a profound message which is this- help yourself by helping others. This universal truth is presented without being preachy or pious. Carter tells you what happened to him but not what you should do.
In the end, this reader was left with the dual emotions of disgust for the things people will do to other people for no good reason and hope for the people who do things for others for no good reason. Carter did something exceedingly rare in these modern times- he took a stand and did something about a situation that was unacceptable to him.
Fools Rush In has a good pace and interesting characters and places. Buy the book and expect to be entertained and moved. Carter has the makings of a fine American author.

I admit I was partially drawn to this book because of it's connection with U2, and I am a huge U2 fan. The storyline hooked me though, I heard about it through different websites and I decided I had to read it. I am so thankful that I did. This book was amazing, there is no other way to describe it. This is one of the best books I have ever read in my life and I have read many books. No other book resonated with me so deeply (expect Hemingway, Plath and a few others). I can not pinpoint what I felt connected to most, the people or the beauty in darkness. It was probably the latter, I read this book and it made me want to live more so than I had before. Ever since I was eleven or twelve, when I first heard U2, I felt I had found a purpose, a goal in life to do something worthy. Many say that it's a dream, unattainable and a waste of time. This book made me believe in the dreams I've had and those I will have. I can not say it enough, this book was AMAZING. Bill Carter has a gift, the gift of relaying emotion on the one-dimensional page of a book. There is so much wisdom in Fools Rush In, questions were asked that I've thought about and the context of the novel and concept of the novel helped answer these questions. There are some books that will stay with you for the rest of your life, The Alchemist was one of them for me and this book was another. Talking Heads said "once in a lifetime", that line just seems so appropriate here.

Do yourself a favor and read this . . .

If this book were fiction, I think I would have found myself wanting the author to calm down, to stop forcing it . . . It is Hollywood, a murderous war zone, child abuse, rock stars, politics, and a love story so pure and tragic it rings of Shakespeare. It spans the globe and the spectrum of human emotion and behavior. It is an insane and very long dream. And it is all true.

It's nearly impossible to comprehend how this has all happened within one person's (young) life. It serves the reader a grand lesson of suffering, endurance, and relentless motivation.

The writing is intelligent, clear, calm. Which is very helpful, given the nature of this story. The book is from the author's point of view but the characters and stories are unoppressed. They are given enough freedom to divulge themselves to the reader through the dialogues and actions relayed by the writer. There is almost a faint journalistic quality to this tale in that we are being told a story and given room to take it in and interpret it in our own way. And despite the difficult subject matter, the author does not drown us in his emotion. It is excellent writing.

This novel is a journey, physical and psycological. It is fantastic in its scope. The reader is invited along for a very personal ride. It is the story of a young man coping with what he's been dealt. Truly courageously, without the help of denial or delusions. I have encountered very few books that are so deeply enriching, that linger. I feel fortunate to have read it.

A fairy tale romance of epic proportion. The ceremony lasted for eleven wonderful years. The marriage moved from ceremony to scarament in the eleventh year. The author very openly shares
the sacrifices made for the sake of their wedding vows.
Unfortunately it is at this juncture that too many couples opt out of their vows. Instead of moving from ceremony to sacrament they fail the test of time and end in divorce court.
Fresh Water from Old Wells reveals the truth about a great marriage. A marriage somewhat separated by age, but most certainly pre-approved by divine power. I highly recommend that this book be marketed right alongside of "Lies at the Alter- The Truth About Great Marriages''by Dr. Robin Smith. It would also be right at home with other books for and about Detroiters.
Attorney Persons was a fixture in the City County Building for years. He was truly a goodwill ambassador for the city of Detroit. His legacy 'Precious Memories'' is testament of a wonderful devoted and loving husband and a true man of God. His wife is to be commented for her faithfulness and devotion to her husband. What a couple!! What a mighty, mighty love!!!

He is the same yesterday, today and forevermore!!!

Fresh Water from Old Wells tugged at my heart strings from the very beginning. The writer is to be commented for her honesty and her courage. She unselfishly and unashamedly reveals the inner most cavities of her life which ultimtately leads her to the Fresh Waters at the Well of life. It is no wonder she sub titles her book ''A 21st Century Woman's visit to the Well. Just like the Samritan woman who met Jesus at the well of salvation, the writer found the same comforter, the same guider, the same
loving kindness that provided her the courage to tell her story, her own personal truth . He is the same yesterday, today and forevermore.
I highly recommend this love story to all. It truly is a gift of love to all.

P.S.
It was true then and it is still true today, WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE''. The world could use more Fred K. Persons in it. Sorry I never met him.

Fresh Water from Old Wells is a must read for anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. Grief is a very personal journey. We each experience and work through our personal grief in unique ways. The writer has very openly and candidly shared her journey. I laughed, I Cried, I praised the Lord.
I found the Wells to be a place of comfort and solace for the reader and for myself.
The journey through Fresh Water was one that I will cherish and remember for the remainder of my days.

P.S. This is NOT a kids review?
It took lots of guts and faith. I thank her for her courage.

Using acrylic paint, foam board and plaster to create his colorful illustrations, the artist and author has created an entertaining look at the heavy equipement needed to build a bridge. Each double-paged spread has one or two sentences describing the action. A turtle who gets in the way of the construction workers is never mentioned, but provides humorous visual action in the story. Although the illustrations appear bold and simple, there is enough detail to invite close inspection of each picture. This will work very well as a book for a child to look at alone, and for use in group sharing, such as storytime.

My son has been into trucks since he was 6 months old. I bought this book for him last year (when he was one) and it quickly became a favorite! It's the only book we even took on our vacation last summer, because we knew he would never tire of it. We did, however, so now we have made up a tune to the book and sing it as a song. My son loves "reading" the book to us, singing the song, and when he plays in his sandbox, he recites the book as he is playing with his tractors "digger digs hole" "bulldozer fills hole."
I'm not sure I really appreciate the book at his level, but then again, I don't get how a 2 year old boy can be fascinated with the wheel on a touring bus!
If you're thinking about it, just buy it -- I don't think you'll be sorry you did!

Get up early in the dark, quiet morning, and join the workers traveling to the worksite. It's time to "get to work, trucks!" There are big trucks and little trucks, busy all day, and hard at work. Meet the loader and the dump truck. Watch the digger dig a deep hole, and the bulldozer push dirt into other holes. The cement mixer is hard at work mixing and mixing. The crane lifts beams high in the sky, and the roller flattens the road on the ground. And as a special treat, see if you can find the visitor on each page who just can't get enough of heavy equipment.... Don Carter's simple, descriptive text, written in short sentences, is kept to a minimum. The real story is told through his bold, bright, and busy, eye-popping illustrations. Each two page spread dazzles with vivid color, texture, energy, and humor, and little ones will be itching to hop aboard the dump truck, or maybe the bulldozer, or crane, and get right to work. Perfect for preschoolers, Get To Work Trucks is an engaging and informative little gem of a book, that's sure to become an instant favorite at your house.

This product is the same book I have been using for the past two years. This book is as good as the last two I received. The problem is with the people who send the books. The last vendor took three weeks to mail the book, then the US Mail took 18 days to carry it from California to east Alabama. It took five days to carry it from Atlanta to me. This is disgraceful.

I found this book to be a very good introduction to the subject of reflexology. Hand reflexology was appealing to me, because I couldn't imagine working with my feet in a self-help way. However, after reading Hand Reflexology, I was inspired to learn more about foot and body reflexology as well. Even though the book has that folksy, old-fashioned style of older self-help manuals, it does contain tons of really useful information and presents it in a clear, easy-to-read way. I've read many books on reflexology since first acquiring this one, and I still feel that this is one of the best.

This is the best book ever written on reflexology, bar none. It is filled with excellent practical advice. There are chapters on the meridians of the body and how they are connected to the hands and feet of a person. The author shows how the different organs and glands are connected to energy points in the hand and how these organs can be healed. There is an excellent chapter on detoxifying the entire body using reflexology. These techniques work very well. A persons health is the most important thing, no doubt about it. This book gives a very easy method to cure disease and it works great. Its a pity that more people do not know about this book and suffer terribly, all without need. They should learn to question things, especially the medical establishment and think for themselves. This book is worth every penny and more. A tremendous health resource.

Allene Carter uncovered the story of an unsung hero and retells it with passion in her book HONORING SERGEANT CARTER. Allene's phone rang one fateful day, and she was informed that her father-in-law, Eddie Carter, had been denied the Medal of Honor for his bravery in World War II. Eddie was originally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military honor, as no black men had been awarded the Medal of Honor during this war. This wrong was to be righted by the Clinton Administration, and Eddie and others would be revered for their service to their country.

However, as Allene began rummaging through the remnants of the soldier's life, she discovered a lot more than she expected. It seemed her father-in-law had much more of a story to tell than Allene had ever imagined. Through her tireless efforts and extensive research, Allene Carter rectified the injustices committed against Eddie during his life.

This book is much more than the casual recounting of a soldier's story. Instead, it is a glimpse into the world as it was for a black serviceman returning home from war in the 1940's. Though there are countless others who lived a similar experience, the personal aspect of knowing this soldier by name affords a much heavier impact. I applaud Allene Carter for discovering the truth and clearing the name of an innocent victim of a racist era.

Honoring Sgt. Carter is a powerful, luminous
and just tribute to a soldier who gave his all to his country,
only to be dissed by it.
The book written by Allene G. Carter and Robert Allen is
emmensely readable. It covers Sgt. First Class Edward Carter's
childhood as a missionary's kid in India and China, through his Army days when he served in the 12th Armored Division.Carter was wounded nine times fighting against the Germans( The Battle Of The Bulge) But still single handedly killed and captured several Germans, A Rambo like feat.
Carter won The Purple Heart and the Distinguished Service Cross for his participation in the battle, but was denied The Medal Of Honor which
Carter recieved over half a century later. Carter would go on to create
Black National Guard units in California. He achieved smashing success as he was an excellent teacher.
A short but handsome man of African American, Anglo and Indian decent.
Carter was powerfully built and ruggedly handsome. His uniforms were always neat and medals shiny. He was highly respected by his fellow soldiers and officers. Carter later went on to work as a Military Police Officer while stationed in Washington. During his life Carter was under surveillance by the Military Control Intelligence Corps and the F.B.I. who has suspected him of
suborsive activity. Agents followed him constantly. In one chapter, Carter
confronts the agents only to see them drive off. Because of the Government's constant surveillance of Carter it was hard for him to find a decent job in civillain life. He worked several jobs. He made several attempts
to own his own business which netted him little success.
As a result of his failure to find a decent civillain job Carter re-enlisted, hoping to make a career out of the military but his goal of being an Army lifer
was cut short when he was denied the opportunity to re-enlist.
Carter and Allen write a wonderful book which shows Carter as more than a war hero. Allene Carter's research of her Father-In -Law's battle to stay in the military and of his life is commendable. The prose flows effortlessly and is a pleasure to read. Carter's family life is portrayed adequately, one of his sons says while Sgt. Carter wasn't an affectionate man they knew he loved them. The relationship between SGT. Carter and his parents is portrayed as strained. Carter's mother dissapeared when he was a young boy and it affected him deeply, probably causing him to channel his anger and energy into his soldiering. Carter's relationship with his wife makes one believe true love can conquer all. Several letters between them are presented, showing the love, anguish and hope they shared as a military couple.
Carter got his vindication, he was awarded The Medal Of Honor.
He also recieved an apology from President Clinton and from the Army for the injustice they dealt to him.
Carter's story is only one of many of Black soldiers who served their country
but never got the props they deserved.

It is a good thing to serve one's country, but to be denied the chance to reenlist due to fear and ignorance is entirely another matter. SFC Edward Carter was a military man who wore his uniform and duty proudly. As a child of missionaries in India and later in China, where he first helped the Chinese with the Japanese, as well as served in the Spanish War's U.S. Abraham Lincoln Brigade, he exemplified that he was willing t fight for a country that didn't give him a full fair shake. In the closing days of WW2, he was involved in a attack of a small town, despite heavy losses from his unit and even though he was injured himself, he wouldn't leave the scene until the job was done. Although his superiors felt that he deserved the Congressional Medal of Honor, they felt at that time, that due to his color, it would be denied which was rightly so. After the war, he reenlisted and helped to establish a California National Guard base in Los Angeles, and later served at Fort Lewis, Washington, where, he was cited for being an excellent soldier. Despite of his glowing records, he was denied reenlistment and no reason was never given. He appealled constantly for years, but to no avail, and he died in 1963 without justice being served to him. In 1997, after checking on conditions of African American soldiers in WW2, he was finally honored to received the Congressional Medal of Honor. His daughter in law, Allene, who wrote this book, also started to checking into his military and other files to see why he was denied reenlistment, which ended up into a full apology by the Army and President Clinton, as well as coverage in the media. It is an excellent book and highly recommended.

Honoring Sergeant Carter uncovers an important yet esoteric chapter in American WWII history and gives balance to The Greatest Generation. You may only come across a book as fine as this once or twice in a lifetime. If your budget allows only one book - this is the one. It is "intellectually honest," informative, passionate, and if you don't have ice water running through your veins, you will feel it!

While reading I reminisced of my late father who served in very close proximity with Sergeant Carter during and after WWII. They never knew each other. My father saw Sergeant Carter after the war - how could he miss him - the sharp and deadly soldier that Carter was described to be and one of the very few African Americans holding the Distinguished Service Cross. My father understood all too well what happened to many good men during this era. I look back on living in Germany as a youngster during the Cold War with my avid interest in WWII. I explored bunkers and shopped flea markets searching for relics. Most had the dreaded swastika on it. My father observed my hobby and explained to me in great detail how it was dangerous and in bad taste, but I could keep the collection. He then told me in no uncertain terms: "If you come across anything with a Communist marking on it ......etc, etc, DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME SON!!!" I shook my head yes - I was speechless. Honoring Sergeant Carter provided clearer understanding of why I couldn't speak that day.

Sergeant First Class Edward A. Carter, Jr., affectionately known as Eddie, was one of the seven African American soldiers honored at the White House with the Medal of Honor. This long overdue tribute (over 50 years) took place on January 13, 1997. When you read Eddie's story - that is backed with strong research and solid documentation - you will see how fact (in this situation) is stranger than fiction.

A must read for WWII historians and buffs who are sincerely interested in balancing their understanding of WWII. Honoring Sergeant Carter is a great companion book that will complement Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation.

When all you want to do is feel better you'll consider all the possibilities, but it's so hard to figure out what is legitimate these days. Dr. Multz explains, dispells and validates a lot of different alternative therapies for arthritis. It's overall an educational reading, but will also be a great reference book to have in my library. I especially enjoyed discovering exactly -why- sex and alcohol are useful treatments - and appreciate knowing the details are coming from such a well-known specialist. Dr. Multz also seems to have an affinity for wine, as he has included a charming section on enjoying it through wine tastings and other fun ways. I recommend this book as a reference for anyone with arthritis and an enjoyable read as well.

This publication represents a thorough, serious discussion of Arthritis from a medical perspective and also provides insight into many herbal, mineral and homeopathic remedies. Humor is interspersed appropriately throughout.

The book is easy to read, but yet very up-to-date on the latest treatments for those with Arthritis and their caregivers. A must read even for the busy rheumatologist needing a little lighter side of the profession.

A helpful, entertaining book

This highly improbable book title is fun, but it's also solid, scientifically verifiable information from a highly respected rheumatologist. But before you rush out to find a copy of the rheumatology Kama Sutra, let me tell you that you'll find even more information-yes, besides discussion of positions. Information about how sex and alcohol trigger a chemical reaction that reduces the pain, swelling, and inflammation of arthritis; information about over-the-counter vitamin supplements that are effective against arthritis; information about popular and absolutely worthless aids, like homeopathy, copper bracelets, magnets, MSM, and radon mines; information about dangerous therapies, like chapparel, rattlesnake meat, ayervedic products that contain lead, neck manipulation, suspect medications from south of border; and finally, some purported therapies that are just plain funny, like moon dust, radon water, red lights in a box, cider vinegar and honey, and a vibrating chair.
But then there are many more things that do work, and this is where Dr. Multz's professional expertise shines. He discussed why arthritis is more prevalent and in more forms in women than in men-it's the body chemicals, and the discussion is fascinating. The advice is adjust; avoid stress, because it makes arthritis worse; and seek treatment, because there are new things that really do work. Among the things that work are exercise (particularly aquatic exercise), meditation, and sex, which release prolactin. Surprisingly, ginger extract works to reduce pain. Not hugely, but it does work, and not incidentally, it works for the pain of fibromyalgia, a cousin of arthritis

Overall the product is excellent, not only for in-class study, but as a good guide as well. Other class mates, including the professor too, indicate that when buying "Keys to College Studying", make sure it contains the "RESEARCH NAVIGATOR", which is an attachment brochure that has to come with the book. Unfortunately in my case there was no "Research Navigator" included, but finally it is kind of OK.

Very informative. Great excercises and current ideas and suggestions. Many ways of acclimating yourself to your studies are common sense.

I teach a class called "Skills For Professional Development." I use this book for this class because it contains all the key elements not only for studying purposes, but also because it discusses, in length, important topics such as time management, family support, and plagarism issues. While parts of the book may seem like simple common sense, for older students just now returning to college, they are helpful reminders to get them back into the swing of things. Great book used for this particular class.
