More than a coffee table book, to be sure. The images are stunning and emphasize the mythic narrative that gently reveals Tibetan culture in a sensitive and compelling way. Unfortunately, there is not quite enough info on the Chinese point of view and China's 3000 year old history of interference with and claims (generally bogus at best but still rather important) on Tibet which no doubt played no small role in the PRC's occupation and colonization of Tibet. While this book does eloquently provide the Tibetan in exile perspective, it's useful to understand what China's claims over Tibet entail and the history behind it, if for nothing else, to simply be more effective in refuting some of the more egregious and specious claims made by the PRC. The book does at least mention the interference by the UK and USA, specifically Nixon's pulling funding and support from the Tibetan guerillas resisting the PRC invasions and occupation of the 1950's, but it doesn't go far enough to name the names of the culprits in the US corporate juggernaut responsible for abandoning the entire nation and culture of Tibet in favor of the racist Chinese imperial/colonial occupation nor the US's help to China in getting maps redrawn which effectively eliminate Tibet from younger generations' minds. That's criminal and should have been in this book. The book also falls prey, unfortunately, to the Shangri-La myth common among American Tibet supporters; that Tibet was blissful and egalitarian prior to Chinese invasion. It decidedly was not, although tremendous compassion is due to the 14th Dalai Lama for recognizing their shortcomings and taking steps even in exile to overcome this. And, in no way should that justify China's actions by any stretch. If you read the book with the view that this is one narrative, one presentation, it's quite a good one, and at least a fully fleshed out version. It begs for a companion book that allows the grit and grime of everday Tibetan working class reality and the real shocks to Tibet culture the Chinese "modernization" and "liberation" propaganda nonsense represent. If the world gets to know the truth through this book and others like it, Tibet may yet have a chance. The book is gorgeous and really well written, the latter being something most "coffee table" books lack.

A deliciously contrarian view of the psychiatric profession.

The authors will be familiar to any regular reader of alt.flame.psychiatry. Ablow and Coles have a long-standing reputation as two of the most provocative--and talented--investigators of the region where social norms, criminal activity, and the human brain meet. That's brain, not mind, and the distinction is an important one when approaching A & C's body of work. Wielding an informed position best described as "neo-materialism," the authors masterfully unearth the links between doctor and patient, criminal and victim, normalcy and deviance. In particular, this work puts to rest many of the issues raised in Danielski's "The Relationship of the Physician and the Trauma Patient," [1986] and Bearden's "Shrinks and Other Friends" [1992]. Please don't get the impression that A & C's work is simply another dry academic work on patient/doctor interaction, though. This is also a penetrating first-person account of one doctor's frightening but ultimately redemptive plunge into the nightmarish world of the mentally disturbed. A tasty read, and highly recommended for everyone, from fans of true-crime to serious academics hungering for the latest in therapeutic theory.

The book Together Forever by Anne Kristen Carroll is a wonderful Christian handbook on salvaging a floundering marriage. Ms. Carroll gives examples both from her life and other marriages and uses the Scripture extensively. Don't sit down with this book without also having your Bible at hand.

The author of this book shares so many of lifes little miracles through her experiences as a dance instructor. Over the many years of being a teacher, she has dealt with many tragedies and triumphs, that she feels have made her a better, stronger, more Godly person. My guess, is the many people she refers to in the book, would refer to her as their "special little angel". The book is written as if she is just talking to you. I laughed, I cried and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Etchings and more

Review Date: 2000-12-02
This fascinating book presents in loving detail the work of an artist who subtly commingles beauty and horror, angels and beasts. Traian Filip was born in Bucharest, Romania in 1955 and experienced the repression of the Ceausecu regime. In 1989, he arrived in New York and then settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, where his work took on a new grace, but with an evident loneliness for his family in Romania. He took his own life in 1993. For most of his life he concentrated on intaglio etchings, later producing paintings on found materials. The book poignantly relates his personal history to his artistic production. It gives exellent renditions of many of his beautiful and intriguing etchings and paintings.

The eleventh Poldark novel takes place entirely within the tumultuous year of 1815, and while not all of it concerns war, the conflict on the continent is certainly central to the telling of the tale in this penultimate book in the series. While the apparent surrender of Bonaparte is celebrated across Europe, the French tyrant plots to break his word and return from exile on the island of Elba. Unaware of the imminent re-appearance of this foe, the Poldarks, like their countrymen, mark the coming of peace with parties and gladness of heart. Geoffrey Charles reflects on his years in the army and speaks of his pride in having seen the war through to its conclusion. Even Jeremy, stationed across in the Low Countries, returns home to Cornwall and at last is married to his great love, Cuby Trevanion. Ross and Demelza are overjoyed for their son and wish him and his bride the deepest of happiness. All seems too well, and it does not last, of course. As England rejoices, Bonaparte sneaks back into France and reignites his adopted nation in vicious anti-British militancy. At the head of an army bent on revenge, he marches north, and now the English scramble to again field a force to meet him. The newlywed Jeremy abruptly leaves a shocked Cuby behind, and is accompanied to the front lines by his veteran cousin Geoffrey Charles, as they begin a hasty journey toward destiny at a Belgian town called Waterloo.

Fantastic! New and different, a must-have!

This is a fantastic book! Super thick, heavy and with beautiful color photos and information. Many old black and white photos, too. This is a book that will not dissapoint even the toughest critic. And, check out pages 190 and 191 - the yellow Willy's - we are good friends with the owner of this car. Didn't even know there was a photo of his car in the book before buying it!

We bought this as a Christmas gift for a friend, and plan to purchase another for ourselves and for my father for his birthday. It's really an outstanding pictorial. Even if you, or the person you'd like to buy this for has lots of "car books", this is unique and in my opinion it's a must-have. It will become a quick favorite.
