This book is a real thriller. Like all good thrillers, there's a love story intertwined. It's a fast read and you'll almost feel the roller coaster's ups and downs. It's a quick read but well worth the time. Don't read the last two chapters right after lunch.

Delux version of this classic Alice series
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-05
BLTC Press out of Santa Cruz, CA. has done another Kindle-specific edition in this Feb 2008 release. Note the first one they did of this Lewis Carroll classic but for Alice in Wonderland done in Nov 2007.

As with the first Alice book, this also has the same illustrator as the original edition which makes it a delightful version. The illustrations are scattered throughtout the entire book and work well on the Kindle.

Together, these BLTC Press editions preloaded onto a Kindle e-reader gift to an older child seems a fabulous idea. At $399 a pop currently for a Kindle, this does seem like an expensive idea and I'm not sure there's a way to control a child downloading at will books from Amazon but I'm so happy to see Kindle supported so specifically by publishers this early on.

If Kindle really takes off and e-books start to get some serious widespread consumer interest, wouldn't it be great if special versions of Kindle could be produced for niche markets like children. This could supplement physical books who have the edge certainly with their ability to do special features like pop-ups, color, sounds etc but for classics like Alice which are more conventionally text based and translate well into just black and white, what a great way to add to the mix and continue to encourage older readers to read more and watch less TV and play video games.

This is the Alice book that will introduce Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Red and White Queens, the Jabberwocky, the Garden of Live Flowers and lots of other fanciful delights to another generation of children! Makes great adult reading as well ~(;->

This edition will cost more but I think you'll find it well worth it.

More than a coffee table book, to be sure. The images are stunning and emphasize the mythic narrative that gently reveals Tibetan culture in a sensitive and compelling way. Unfortunately, there is not quite enough info on the Chinese point of view and China's 3000 year old history of interference with and claims (generally bogus at best but still rather important) on Tibet which no doubt played no small role in the PRC's occupation and colonization of Tibet. While this book does eloquently provide the Tibetan in exile perspective, it's useful to understand what China's claims over Tibet entail and the history behind it, if for nothing else, to simply be more effective in refuting some of the more egregious and specious claims made by the PRC. The book does at least mention the interference by the UK and USA, specifically Nixon's pulling funding and support from the Tibetan guerillas resisting the PRC invasions and occupation of the 1950's, but it doesn't go far enough to name the names of the culprits in the US corporate juggernaut responsible for abandoning the entire nation and culture of Tibet in favor of the racist Chinese imperial/colonial occupation nor the US's help to China in getting maps redrawn which effectively eliminate Tibet from younger generations' minds. That's criminal and should have been in this book. The book also falls prey, unfortunately, to the Shangri-La myth common among American Tibet supporters; that Tibet was blissful and egalitarian prior to Chinese invasion. It decidedly was not, although tremendous compassion is due to the 14th Dalai Lama for recognizing their shortcomings and taking steps even in exile to overcome this. And, in no way should that justify China's actions by any stretch. If you read the book with the view that this is one narrative, one presentation, it's quite a good one, and at least a fully fleshed out version. It begs for a companion book that allows the grit and grime of everday Tibetan working class reality and the real shocks to Tibet culture the Chinese "modernization" and "liberation" propaganda nonsense represent. If the world gets to know the truth through this book and others like it, Tibet may yet have a chance. The book is gorgeous and really well written, the latter being something most "coffee table" books lack.

To Wrestle With Demons: A Psychiatrist Struggles to Understand His Patients and Himself

A deliciously contrarian view of the psychiatric profession.

The authors will be familiar to any regular reader of alt.flame.psychiatry. Ablow and Coles have a long-standing reputation as two of the most provocative--and talented--investigators of the region where social norms, criminal activity, and the human brain meet. That's brain, not mind, and the distinction is an important one when approaching A & C's body of work. Wielding an informed position best described as "neo-materialism," the authors masterfully unearth the links between doctor and patient, criminal and victim, normalcy and deviance. In particular, this work puts to rest many of the issues raised in Danielski's "The Relationship of the Physician and the Trauma Patient," [1986] and Bearden's "Shrinks and Other Friends" [1992]. Please don't get the impression that A & C's work is simply another dry academic work on patient/doctor interaction, though. This is also a penetrating first-person account of one doctor's frightening but ultimately redemptive plunge into the nightmarish world of the mentally disturbed. A tasty read, and highly recommended for everyone, from fans of true-crime to serious academics hungering for the latest in therapeutic theory.

The book Together Forever by Anne Kristen Carroll is a wonderful Christian handbook on salvaging a floundering marriage. Ms. Carroll gives examples both from her life and other marriages and uses the Scripture extensively. Don't sit down with this book without also having your Bible at hand.

The author of this book shares so many of lifes little miracles through her experiences as a dance instructor. Over the many years of being a teacher, she has dealt with many tragedies and triumphs, that she feels have made her a better, stronger, more Godly person. My guess, is the many people she refers to in the book, would refer to her as their "special little angel". The book is written as if she is just talking to you. I laughed, I cried and I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
