John O'Hara produces some of his best with the novella

Sermons and Soda Water consists of 3 novellas which involve the same person -- James Mallory. Mallory is thought to be the alter ego of O'Hara. The first story "The Girl on the Baggage Truck" is a story of the younger Mallory barely avoiding being pulled down by involvement with an aspiring actress. The second, my favorite, "Imagine Kissing Pete" is the story of a bad marriage which goes good. I'm surprised no one ever made a movie of this one. The final one is a story of Mallory's senior years. He meets up with an old friend he has gradually moved away from, mainly due to the friend's marriage to a woman no one likes. Mallory is surprised to discover that his friend genuinely loved his wife. These stories remain popular because, like Appointment in Samarra, they highlight O'Hara's ability with dialogue and the description.

Great Collection of Western Short Stories!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-26
This is the best Western short story anthology I've come across in a month of Sundays! It features 22 short stories or short novels by genre masters such as Zane Grey, Max Brand, Ernest Haycox, Frank Bonham, Wayne Overholser and Will Henry. And there's not a clunker in the bunch!

Editor Jon Tuska has done a marvelous job of rescuing these stories from the faded pages of magazines such as 'Lariat Story Magazine,' 'Frontier Stories' and 'Western Trails.' He introduces each story with an insightful summary of that writer's career and ends the book with a list of recommended titles.

Anyone wanting to read fine, well-written western short stories should buy this book! My knowledge of western writers was/is painfully limited, which is why I was so pleased to discover the other, fine storytellers like Alan LeMay, Barry Cord, Les Savage and Steve Frazee who are featured in this book. The stories range from rip-roarin' action to quiet, psychological pieces to touching love stories and can these guys write! If you can't find a copy of this book to purchase, visit your local library and check out their copy. You won't be sorry, believe me.

Bottom line: If you love the old West, you will love this book!

I like this book so much. It is the best book i have ever read! It is about this girl called Julie and she wasn't looking forward to spending a month in her grandfather's house while her parents were on holiday. She was expected to help her cousin Brian with his studying, and she thought it would be very, very dull. She was wrong. It began with the sound of footsteps in an empty room....then a series of apparently unconnected accidents...Julie soon finds herself drawn into a horrifying mystery that reaches beyond the limits of time and touches every member of her family, both the living - and the dead. Then the appearance of a glowing, unearthly shape...Julie and Brian become involved in a race against time to discover the identity of the ghost whose presence signifies death.

A New Age apocalyptic comedy-adventure?

_The Shining, Shining Path_ is a fabulous book that defies categorization. As an adventure story with spiritual overtones, it reminds me a little of _The Celestine Prophecy_, but _Shining Path_ is *much* better written and far more enjoyable. What happens when a Vietnam vet meets a traveling tour of Tibetan monks, a former sweetheart in a wheelchair, and a black mathematical genius? You get an indescribable mix of mysticism, romance, and slapstick comedy. Check it out - it's well worth a read.

Protecting old growth

Fascinating look at the logging industry and the battles to protect the last of the few giant trees left in this country. The author lived in logging communities and spent a great deal of time with both loggers and the people trying to stop logging of old growth forests. Also covers the politics behind the rape of the environment, including the greed of politicians selling off old growth for money. By focusing on drama, personalities, and the earthy language of loggers, this book is a fun read. The author is clearly on the side of the conservationists, but thoroughly covers the arguments of the pro-logging contingent as well.

A Fun Book with Catchy Tunes

This book was a gift from Grandma for my son's 3rd birthday. He absolutely loves it. It comes with a handle, so it is really a "take along" book. The pictures are fun, bright and bold and the songs (The Wheels on The Bus; Row, Row, Row Your Boat; My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean; Down By the Station amongst others) that come on the included CD just make you want to sing along. My husband got quite tired of singing the whole book to my son at bedtime for weeks at a time, but our child was thrilled. Now my one year old is also starting to get hooked. All I can say is: We've had some fun times with this book.
