The Secret Adversary was one of the most engaging books I have ever read. Set in post World War I England, two down-on-their-luck friends (Prudence Cowley and Tommy Beresford) form a pact to create Young Adventurers, Ltd., a company billing itself as willing to perform any task-- provided the pay was good enough. Yet before they place their advertisement, Prudence is approached by an unusual man who has overheard their conversation and wants to meet her-- alone-- the next morning. The story that follows stimulates the mind as well as appeasing those with a taste for action, without being graphic or offensive. Truly a good read.

This book is a welcome addition to my library. It provides a useful introduction to the subject of gas hydrates. I especially like the discussion of the tools for predicting hydrate formation. The discussion on combatting hydrates is also very useful. I recommend this book to all engineers working in the natural gas business.

Not a fool, but Carroll would love modern day media attention!

I discovered Anna Carroll while reading William Safire's Freedom. I could tell he liked this character, so I did some research. Anna Carroll was an attention seeker. She inflated her importance and contributions even a decade after the war. She did this for two reasons: attention and money. Never married, well educated, she was the typical bluestocking of the day. No money, no man. Every interaction Carroll had with politicos of the time were expanded to overstate the relationship and her contribution to the politician's success. I doubt she had more than a couple face to face interactions with Lincoln, much less any serious discussion about war strategy. Always one to take the opportunity to polish her image, Anna Ella Carroll was not hesitant to play the "helpless woman" card whenever it seemed advantageous.

This book is well written. No author's preconceptions--just hypothesis based on letters and publications.

As a male reader i found the book easy to read and follow. The suspense built to a surprise ending. The story line covering the torment of war was brought to a personal level in the lives of the charactors. Would make a great movie..

Noel Carroll is a composite name of a husband and wife writing team. Husband Noel is a former CEO, while wife Carol was a corporate executive. Together they have published novels, short stories and satiric essays. Circle of Distrust is another of their works.

Therese Elliott has a terrifying and realistic nightmare about her husband's upcoming launch of the shuttle Atlantis, twenty-five days before launch. In her dream the entire crew has been murdered by a madman, and she is seeing dead bodies through her husband's eyes. Little does she know, until she hooks up with a investigative priest from the Vatican, that she has unconsciously tuned into an international terrorist with his own agenda for disrupting the flight and destroying the space station. Sparks fly, and the very current issue of celibacy arises as Therese and Father John enter Lebanon to interview potential witnesses to a murder that would cast light on which of the space crew could be the culprit. Naturally Therese nearly gets herself killed when she dares to go for a walk close to the hotel to clear her head:

"Mustafa did not look convinced. 'The person who did this is known to us, my friend. Your hotel doorman recognized him and passed the information along to the police who quickly called us.' John did not ask in what capacity the doorman did this. In the city of Beirut, there were agents and friends of agents everywhere. He wondered what the man had reported back about himself and Therese."

Plumb full of action, Never By Blood has all the hallmarks of a great whodunit, international thriller style. The Noel Carroll team does a bang-up job of secreting the murderer among a fairly small list of potentials and completely faking out the reader in the most delightful way. Shuttle/Nasa details are complex enough to satisfy the biggest techno-nut. The power is in the details, and Never by Blood spares none. It is a multi-layered exercise in what excellent writing is all about. There is never a dull moment, and characterization is top-notch. A most amazing read. Please keep writing more of these...they're great!

Scriptural Fresh air:
This introduction to the Old Testament for all kinds of people, Bible study groups, college and seminary freshmen and women, and the typical Amazon.com theological seekers is enlightening. This slim book is an excellent introduction of the Hebrew Bible and its Christian counter part, the Old Testament, written by an OT expert, and teacher, is recommended for any Christian or Jewish reader looking for a deeper understanding and faith promoting guide in the light of modern scholarship. New Paths invites readers to re-approach the Bible in a friendly way, inquiring, discovering, yet listening, in order to understand the new scholarship as compared to the pragmatic treatment of scripture.

New Paths' book themes:
Bible, Biblical Criticism & Interpretation, Hebrew Bible & Old Testament, Old Testament Commentary, Messianic prophecies, Study References. Those themes are elaborated in six chapters and an instructional introduction. chapters four and Five make the core of the author's facilitation of scholarly issues. The only prequalification to read and enjoy this book is the interest to rediscover the book of books. The author will take you through the whole OT in just 110 pages, an ever challenging and enriching tour of the total collection. The reviewer recommends this book as an excellent introduction to the subject per se, and for those who are then ready for "The Jewish Bible and the Christian Bible," by Prof. Julio T. Barrera.

Pilgrimage through the OT:
The book reflects the depth of Fr. Carroll's understanding of scriptural unity, meaning of revelation, and inspiration supported by his massive readings and writings of authority in the field of holy scripture, coupled with his exceptional talent of teaching the Old Testament with a clear purpose and proven clarity. Fr. Stuhlmueller explains the basic biblical themes of the OT utilizing the contemporary theological tools and clarifies the assumptions of modern biblical scholarship.
In chapter 4: 'Traditions Alive'; he starts showing the Jewish Vs Christian arrangement of the OT books to reveal their unique message. He hence discusses ways that scriptural traditions (J,E,P,D) merge to reveal an integral picture of God in the Pentateuch (five books of Moses). Fr. Stuhlmueller skillfully demonstrates their applicability with selected example studies from Exodus and Isaiah, citing their major difference. He compares liberation, covenant and election to Isaiha's themes; Lord's enthronement, Jerusalem temple, and Davidic entrust.
His fifth chapter on historical reality behind the Bible, he discerns the religious from the historical message pursue his argument calling on; "How much is historical", and "A unique kind of History and Theology." He concludes with examining the messianic icons and prophecies in the Old Testament.

Carroll Stuhlmueller,C.P.

We can't say enough about this book. Primarily focused on the creation and purpose of the Star of Bethlehem, it is a different but pure and truthful approach to sharing the Christmas story. It is both a scientific explanation AND an incredible testament of creation, AND is legal to read in public school! The illustrations are gorgeous, especially if you're an "outer space fan". The story is exciting, and there are optional flaps to open on each page that offer more biblical information on each portion of the story if you want to go further at home. This makes a great book for boys, and is for some reason very hard to find in retail stores, so get it here!

I have Jaws and Surfrider and I think they are the most amazing books I have ever read. I learned a lot about big wave riders that I never knew before. They have a whole different mentality than what I belived them to have. Thanks for putting out such a great book for people like me, who dont like reading, but will make an exception for the exciting ones like yours!
