An adaptation of the original story that children can understand

The original adventures of Alice are much more difficult to read than most people realize. Carroll wrote very figuratively and while people tend to believe that it was a tale for children, it really is not. So much of the book relates to complex adult situations that children simply cannot relate to.
This book is an attempt to change that, by adapting the original story into one more suited for children. In that sense, the target was acquired and hit, the level of the text has been modified so that it is now at the level where children can understand it. I recommend this as the book about Alice's magic adventures that you read to your children, rather than the original version.

it should be law that every child read this wonderfully written book, actually that might be going a bit far, but I LOVE this book, it was read to me as a little girl (given it was the Disney version) and later I purchased it again to read as an adult and I still have to same love and excitement from the story that I all those years ago.
While I could go on about the way this book is written mine is a purely sentimental review!
following Alice down the Rabbit whole is the perfect bed time or rainy day story

Lewis Carrol's stories: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass are amazing stories with hilarious lines and trickery. Complete fantasy with dim-witted and funny characters that can outsmart Alice, but not even themselves! Alice's adventures are fantastic and any fantasy lover should take this opportunity in an instant! (Humpty Dumpty makes sense of the Jabberwocky poem!) If you want to laugh hard, read Alice's Adeventures in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Lewis Carroll's "Alice" novels with illustrations by Mervyn Peake

This is a reasonable, hardcover box-set of Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice" books. It makes a great gift for Alice lovers of any age or for introducing a young reader to Carroll's imaginative, delightful, and thought-provoking children's stories.

What makes this edition better than the average copy of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass" is that it features the celebrated, rarely-seen illustrations originally penned by Meryn Peake for a 1940's printing of the "Alice" books.

Mervyn Peake is remembered as the author of the "Gormenghast" fantasy novels, as well as for his fine illustriations of classics like the "Alice" books and "Treasure Island." In my opinion, his illustrations are more unique, artistic, and magical than John Tenniel's drawings for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's works, with which we are all more familiar.

If you a looking to purchase a copy of "Alice" to put on your bookshelf, I definitely recommend this one.

I have been collecting Alice in Wonderland items for nearly 30 years and I am happy to add this book to my collection. The information is presented in a format that is accessible to the general public and not just the Alice afficianado. The book production is also wery pleasing. The wonder of Alice is how she shows up all over the globe in so many ways 140 years after her conception. I think the title of the book understates to what extent Alice lives in our modern popular culture.

I love this book. I received it yesterday at my office and read what I could on my lunch hour. I couldn't wait to get home. I bought this because I wanted to eventually introduce my 1 year old granddaughter to "Alice In Wonderland." Imagine my surprise to find that I can start reading to her now. There are extended nursery rhymes, funny sayings and a fascinating dialogue through the whole book. The illustrations are superb! I can start my granddaughter on the "white rabbit, calico cat, the queen" as well as "Alice" just from these wonderful illustrations. I can highly recommend this book for children and also adults who enjoy Lewis Carroll's wit. I cannot write enough good things about it.

somehow, this slipped under my radar or i would have bought it a couple months ago when it first came out.

here, pete demolishes all of the most sacred fairy tales that mankind has created including self. then he provides a multitude of pointers for constructing your own customized personal philosophy of life. if you consider any of your beliefs to be any more than mere expedients, then this could be unsettling at first. you'll get over it and be more for it.

if that's in the least interesting to you, then get this before it's banned.

just in case you're not familiar with Peter J. Carroll ...

Thank You Mr. Carroll,
"Why would one choose a prosaic inner life, when they could live one of poetry instead?"
Another gem of wisdom from Pope Pete.
Drink deep and shift away from whatever deranged sense of comfort you have, rest assured Mr. Carroll will rock your world and make you question everything.

The Apophenion refreshes us, the team within known as Lee Webb. Having savored Carroll's writings for years and benefited from them thoroughly we now delight in his latest release.

Do not worry that he only restates earlier material - this truly elegant product complements, clarifies and yet exceeds his previous works. Once again the team known as Stokastikos works marvels.

Many Thanks,

This book is a timeless classic. A story of an interconnected family and neighbors on Maine farms in the late 1920's or early 1930's. Carroll uses a character "Jen" as the main thread that ties this wonderful story together. And yet the "Jen" character is no more important to a great degree than some of the other Shaw family members. It is a good device and used well. I would guess that most people who read this book will almost certainly re-read it again and again. The book reminds me of "Cache Lake Country". The story line is totally different but it has that same timeless quality. A keeper for sure!

Affirmative and Positive

Review Date: 2007-08-31
Although this book was published over seventy years ago, the time frame doesn't detract from its reach and affirmation of the human condition. It tells in five sections (the fours seasons with winter repeated) of the Shaws' lives on a Maine farm. The heroine, Jen, is almost superhuman, unfortunately, but even so, the book is plainly written and positive throughout. I read it in two days (while working, too).

Highly recommended.

Fr. Sweeney was surprised when I referred to his book as a "metaphysicial primer". I meant it as a compliment. This is a lively yet scholarly introduction to metaphysics. It is equally valuable to advanced students and career academics.

Best contemporary book on the issue

A marvel in comparison to the many contemporary metaphysics books that are still so influenced by modernism, positivism and postmodernism. The book covers all issues dealt with by positivist books, but also traditional metaphysical trancendentals (truth, goodness, beauty), linking them to the ultimate Being. The author is not afraid of political correctness, arguing that metaphsics is a scientific discipline, and apologetically interacts with many recent philosophical developments, showing their inadequacy. The book is thick, exhaustive and with a good academic level. The author seems to be influenced by Gilson.
