The Eighth Sea and its Merchant Marine
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-06-03
_Inspite of the fact that this excellent volume was originally written over a quarter of a century ago it is still the best general reference on the Great Lakes fleet and the amazing engineering marvel of the St. Lawrence Seaway that it depends upon. As the book points out, this is one of the largest, smoothest running tranportation systems in the world- maybe that is why it is so little noticed or appreciated. Yet, that makes it no less a maritime miracle. It is a matrix of locks, dams, and channels that creates an eighth sea that rises 600 feet from tidewater to heartland.

_Don't worry about the information being too dated. It reflects the heyday of the fleet in the 70's. Most of these vessels are still in service and when it comes right down to it there hasn't been all that much new construction since then. There is a full secion of the great 1000 foot superlakers that were built during this period. The appendix gives a complete listing of the entire fleets of the U.S. Lake Carriers Association and Canadian Dominion Maritime Association up to the late seventies. It should be noted the many, many ocean going vessels of the world that ply the lakes are not listed.

_The chapters on the history of Great Lakes shipping from schooners to whalebacks is especially fascinating. It is a pity that so few people know the saga of life on the lakes in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was truly an unique world of its own.

_This book is very well illustrated with numerous photos, drawings, maps, and graphs.

A richly-illustrated sourcebook for cargo ship enthusiasts.

This clearly-written, amply-illustrated work is sure to satisfy any cargo ship enthusiast. Although the photos are all black and white, Lesstrang captivates the reader from the beginning by relating fascinating facts and amazing tales by the boat-load.

Simply a great set of books covering systems and network forensics

As you can find in their individual reviews, each book received high marks on its own merit. Put together and this set of three books cannot be beat in the area of system and network forensics.

Although not entrenched in the area of forensics, I do feel that I have a strong technical background upon which to build. I found this series of books refocusing me to think more like a forensics investigator. Not only did I have the opportunity to dig deeper into specific technology areas, but it also reinforced the concepts through scenarios.

Not for the faint of heart, this practical set of books expects you to have a decent technical background to make the best use of it. If you are interested in taking your forensics know-how to the next level, this is a great reference set to be added to your library.

This set of books is very well written and provides a tremendous amount of information to the reader. I would recommend this set of books to anyone who wants to roll up their sleeves and truly get their hands dirty.

I would not recommend these books for the beginner as the material will quickly give one the feeling of "Drinking from a firehose" without a reasonable amount of knowledge going in. The authors do state that while the books are written to be easy to understand they are not for the beginner.

Can't wait until carrier Ethernet knocks on my door

I bought the book without really being interested in the topic of carrier Ethernet in the beginning. I just wanted to learn a little bit more about all the buzzwords that I hear (SONET, MPLS, ...). But as I started reading, I realized what a great potential this topic has.

After some introduction, for each technology there is a chapter that explains how it works and what the potential is. It is easy to skip chapters that are already known or not interesting. The description is just an overview. For a real deployment, of course more documentation would be needed. But that is not the focus of the book.

Those guys who are interested how Ethernet and VoIP will look like in a few years should take the time and check this book out.

Delivering Carrier Ethernet is an excellent text on the subject. It is well structured, reviewing Ethernet fundamentals, and providing a templeted view of all the EoEverything technologies, without resorting to detailed protocol analysis. It has a good context of the evolution, and technologies. I've been in the carrier provider business for over 20 years, and this is a good as it gets. Multiple contribuors helps - nobody can be an expert across all these developing areas.

The book was originally printed in 1984. It was used and in great condition. My friend was delighted to receive the book. It was actually the first book he used when he developed his interest in cooking. It was like reuniting two old friends. His favorite recipe is Osso Buco. My friend believes this to be one of the best cookbooks ever written. He now owns all of R. Carrier's cookbooks.

This is one of the better true-crime books I've read. What a horrific crime! What a disturbed person! One almost feels sorry for Darci, yet her gruesome crime is unforgivable. This book was well researched and very well written. I found myself neglecting everything around me until I finished this book; I simply couldn't put it down!

Hybrid Warships

Review Date: 2001-01-13
This is an excellent review of hybrid warships from the early 20th century to the 1980s. It highlights the difficulties in combining an ability to handle aircraft with any other useful military attributes. It suggests that the desire to design or build such ships is a sign of some psychological defect. If you are interested in a detailed study of the interaction between technical characteristics and military utility in warships, then this book is for you.

Hybrid warships: Mixing the impossible

Review Date: 2000-08-03
Mssrs. McGlaughlin and Laymam write an excellent history of the mixed breed of warship known as the hybrid. They cover designs from before the First World War to modern designs combining missiles and VTOL aircraft. In particular they reveal the difficulty of making a ship capable of carrying and launching a sufficient number of aircraft while at the same time possessing adequate protection and surface firepower. The German vessels designed after the Graf Zepplin were huge ships of over 70,000 tons but carried only 42 aircraft with 6-11/54.5 cal. guns. They were immensely protected but were completely unrealistic as weapons of naval warfare. The Japanese built several classes of cruiser and converted battleships which could be described as hybrid and proved useful although the floatplanes they carried could be vastly outperformed by carrier aircraft. The French, British and Italians also had designs for hybrids. The Russians were going to contract the U.S. to build huge battleship-carriers for them but Congress refused to allow this. Overall, this book is fascinating reading and a must read for any ship modeler, naval historial or naval wargamer.

This is a fascinating reference book for Navy, WWII or war buffs. Streb was ON the Essex during WWII, and later he was a professor of history at Columbia University.

The book details the lives of the 16 men killed on November 25, 1944 when the Essex was struck by a kamikaze: 8 white, and 8 black--one of the first black gun crews.

The book also sets the records straight about many things...one of which: Streb was instrumental in seeing that the man who developed the angled flight deck receive the Navy Cross - FINALLY - in about 1999, the year the book was published.

Streb includes personal photographs taken aboard the ship, as well as numerous comments and personal reflections from others who served aboard the ship. Life and Death Aboard the U.S.S. ESSEX

This book is 'SUPER' simply put! What I love about it is that I can open the book to a theme I'm covering - for example: 'color' and my first reading is a brilliant idea that I cannot wait to try with the children. Also, the prep included for a lot of the ideas is kept to a minimal which I know all teachers love!

I stopped ordering the Mailbox Magazines only because they came out with these wonderful year-end hardcover books that contains everything from the past year. I love it!! Now instead of having the magazines laying around I have one giant book. If you've ever seen an idea, but can't remember which magazine it was in, now you can just look in the book instead of thumbing through all the magazines!! Highly recommended. Also look for other years and other grade levels. Same great quality.

This book is a nice tutorial for wireless and it also presents some very unusual and interesting ideas. CI is an advantageous use of time domain and frequency domain processing. Based on the Discreet Fourier Transform, CI is a powerful and effective way to analyze and synthesize signals. I wish I had thought of this.

The authors write clearly about applications of a new multicarrier technology to conventional communication protocols. The book is well organized and the concepts are presented in an intuitive way. It seems that Carrier Interferometry (CI) is a major breakthrough that will impact many industries. My interest in multicarrier technologies developed while I attended many technical conferences in which CI was presented. CI is one of the few examples of real innovations taking place in wireless communications.

I read this book, the same paperback! I remember the cover
picture so well. I actually read it when I was aboard the USS Saratoga for a two-year tour of duty in the Mediterranean
in 1967! It was such a funny read - and I was living it at the same time! Also, Admiral Gallery came aboard the ship to visit. I saw him on the bridge and he smiled at me! I was kind of starstruck, but somehow he could tell that I actually knew who he was! He wasn't just an author but a real war hero who captured a German U-Boat during WWII! I wish I had actually spoken with him then, but my memory of seeing him, and his funny stories about life on an aircraft carrier remain vivid to this day. 50 bucks? It's worth it!
