Curation on the move

I bought this collection for the essay by Geeta Kapur, in conjunction with my work as curator of the forthcoming exhibition 'New Art from South Asia' scheduled to open at the Herbert, Coventry, in January 2009, to coincide with the opening of the new galleries.
[...]

Kapur's presence in this collection is essential; as her position highlights the narrowness of approaches anchored in Western experiences and references alone (the proverbial 'CENTRE') [see the anthology 'Men in Black']--as if the rest of the world (the so-called PERIPHERY) did not count--and invites us to redefine 'internationalism' and the 'contemporary' through a series of cutural decenterings...

Her collection of essays 'When was Modernism' is a must for all those readers who aspire to open their perspectives on Art; i.e. on World Art, not just Art made according to Western neo-colonial values and preconceptions.

When will Art History and Art Criticism have the maturity to write themselves from multiple centers?

The default tag is to Jean-Hubert Martin I would suggest : Geeta Kapur...

The good, the bad, and the REALLY unlucky...
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-07
On a good day, the deck of an aircraft carrier is a dangerous place. On a bad day. it is the most dangerous place on earth. Author Cory Graff puts together a photo-history of aircraft carrier accidents during WWII that portrays in vivid fashion just how dangerous carrier aviation is.
The book starts with a good synopsis of the beginning of the US Navy carrier aviation. The author then uses the war as a backdrop for his book, tying specific aircraft to each phase of the war, and recounting the situation in the Pacific as the book progresses. Graff's exhaustive research into Navy archives produced a range of carrier mishap photos spanning the gamut of comical to tragic. In addition, wherever possible, he also added a human element by detailing the fate of the pilot.
The best part of this book is most certainly the pictures and accompanying captions. While the history of the Pacific War can be read in numerous sources, a photo collection of this many aircraft mishap pictures is much harder to come by, and Graff should be commended for his efforts to bring them together. A most enjoyable book for aviation and especially military aviation enthusiasts.

Names fictionalized to protect the innocent or the guilty?

This is the facinating account of the life and times of a major ex-leader/minister of the Bruderhof sect, then known as the Society of Brothers (an on again/off again "Hutterian" group). Hutterites refer to them as the "Arnoldleut" (English: Arnold People). Although out of print, it should be reprinted. It's an important part of the permanent record and presents a viewpoint that needs to be heard. A must-read for every student of Hutterianism, Arnoldism, and communal societies. It's an especially necessary read for anyone considering Christian communalism "for life".

The loss of the Lady Lex during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-02
America had only six carriers at the beginning of World War II. The oldest was the Lexington, the second carrier in the U.S. Fleet after the Langley. She was build on the frame of a battle cruiser, had a good crew headed by Sherman, and a good record. During the Battle of the Coral Sea she was lost after sustaining multiple torpedo and bomb hits which exploded ordinance inside here. The author details the history of this mighty ship and the last eight hours of her life.
I like the insight the author put into this book. He interviewed a good number of personnel from the Lexington before he wrote this account. This shows the didication the personnel of the ship had towards saving her after her many hits. It also shows the death of many while fighting the fires and then abandoning the ship. It is a great story about a great ship.

history by an aviator who was there

This is a sound history of U.S. Navy night operations from the beginning to the present. Along the way, the reader picks up a lot of carrier lore that applies equally to day operations. What distinguishes this book from the usual Naval Institute Press study is that Mr. Brown was one of the aviators that he's writing about. Where he can, he gives first-person recollections, and throughout the book he relies heavily on interviews with fellow aviators.

Excellent Synopsis
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-22
I conservatively estimate I've read about 100 books on WWII and this is one of the best on carrier operations in the Pacific. The authors do a wonderful job weaving strategy with combat stats and individual air combat stories in a general narrative. They also do a good job explaining evolution of weapons and tactics during the war. My only complaint is the relatively narrow focus: the book ends with the destruction of Japanese naval air power in June '44. The battle of Leyte Gulf and the subsequent Kamikaze attacks are merely footnoted. The authors also could have delved deeper into the personalities (especially from the Japanese perspective) of the men devising tactics and strategy as the strategic balance of naval power tipped from the "gun club" to air power. Not a book for beginners -- those new to WWII history would be better off starting with one of the many of the excellent overviews of the entire Pacific war. But for a history buff like me, this book was a real pleasure.

Unrequited love for a charming Italian
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-04
Dick Thompson is a successful middle-aged novelist living in a seaside university town, socially he is has many women friends, but he is in fact gay. Then through one of his female friends, Penny, he acquires a lodger, Antonio, Italian, a handsome and charming young philosopher and one time professional footballer who is visiting England to work at the university for research. He has left his wife and two children at home in Florence. Despite an outward appearance of strength and confidence, he is thoroughly undomesticated, certainly not "a domestic animal", he is untidy and dependant on others for physical care and emotional support. Dick is more than willing to provide for Antonio's needs. Inevitable Dick falls in love with the charismatic Antonio, but the strongly heterosexual Antonio is unable to reciprocate the feeling, yet nonetheless regards Dick as good friend.
Dick relates the events of the year that Antonio stayed; his troubled and anxious feelings, the knowledge of the futility but inevitability of those feelings, feelings that may be so familiar to anyone who has been in a similar plight, with intelligence, insight, understanding, and occasional humour. This is a very perceptive and interesting story that has more than a ring of truth about it.
