Essential research material for anyone with an interest in US Naval ships.

I was researching the heroic story of the loss of the USS Aaron Ward (sunk off the Solomon Islands towards the end of WW2) when I came across this item advertised on one of the Amazon websites. Unaware I was looking at an eight-volume set of books, I baulked at the price and decided to search on. Nevertheless, I kept coming back to this item and decided to take a closer look. I am so glad I did.

Set out in alphabetical order and written without fear or favour, the United States Department of Defence have provided one of the most important research tools of modern years and I congratulate them for an excellent job of work. The entry for each ship commences with a note about the origin of the name. For example, the USS Missouri is named after an American state - enough said. The Aaron Ward, however, was named after Admiral Aaron Ward and that particular section commences with a most reasonable biography of the man.

Each ship to bear a particular name is covered in varying degrees of detail - largely dependant on what historical information was available to the compilers. Famous ships and, naturally, more recent vessels, get excellent coverage although it must be said that if the information was available on those much older vessels, then their full story is told here.

Watch out for single volumes being sold separately - when you are either looking for a complete set or perhaps a different volume.

Altogether, one of the best additions to my library for a very long time.

This book rocked. I read it for a Canadian Literature class, and was so impressed that I will never get rid of it. It is witty and satirical, expressing deep concerns between French and English Canadians in a light hearted, and comical manner. French or English, you will appreciate this honest and thought provoking novel.

Great Photo-History on Royal Navy Carriers in WWII!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-01
Althougn overshadowed by their American counterparts, British carriers saw widespread service in all theaters of war from 1939 to 1945. The exploits of the Royal Navy crews who manned ships such as HMS Illustrious, HMS Ark Royal and HMS Trumpeter or flew combat in aircraft such as the Swordfish, Albacore, Gladiator, Fulmar, Seafire or Corsair are given the patented Squadron/Signal visual history treatment in this marvelous book written by Ron Mackay.

FLEET AIR ARM is an eye-opening volume when one's previous conception of WWII carrier combat is limited largely to U.S. carrier ops. Royal Navy crews went to war with an incredible collection of aircraft, some of which proved to be aerial duds. It's interesting to read of the achievements of early RN aircrews flying Swordfish, Gladiator and Skua aircraft - dive-bombing attacks against German shipping in Norway, crippling torpedo attacks against the Italian Fleet, etc. When later equipped with modern aircraft such as the Corsair, Hellcat and Avenger, British carriers were an even more formidable force.

Mackay's concise text is complemented by 150 black & white and color photographs and eight pages of color profiles by Don Greer. The color section is really the icing on the cake, featuring profiles of all the aircraft listed above plus Flycatchers, Nimrods, Rocs, Hurricanes, Kingfishers, Barracudas, Walruses and the unbelievably ugly Blackburn Blackburn!

For those looking for an introductory history of British carriers in action, Mackay's book is a great buy. The photographs alone are worth the price.

Excellent Photo-History of USN WWII Carrier Ops!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-01
Carrier combat enthusiasts and modelers alike will enjoy this Squadron/Signal volume. There have been numerous histories of the Navy's carriers in action but S/S and author Al Adcock have taken a different tack with this book. While furnishing a basic overview of USN carrier ops, they cram the book's 64 pages with over 150 black & white and color images of carriers, aircraft and aircrews in action. Coupled with eight pages of color profiles by Don Greer and Andy Probert and you've got quite a nice package.

In-depth history, no; appealing photo-history, YES!

This article is an insightful and provoking look behind Florida's Valued Policy Law and the interpretation by the court in Mierzwa. If you are interested in property insurance in Florida, this is a must-read article. Mr. Garaffa's grasp of the topic and ability to convey understanding of this difficult and complex topic is outstanding. This is a great article regarding property insurance in Florida.

A little side note on this topic is that Mr. Garaffa provided testimony on this topic to the Florida Legislature when they were considering new legislation on the Valued Policy Law.

Absolutely Delightful Reading
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-06
This is an excellent collection of some 32 articles/stories about the development and use of aircraft carrier warfare. From its earliest days of development when there were no teachers, Gene Ely landed his Curtiss biplane on a makeshift deck on the USS Pennsylvania on January 18, 1911. He was to die in October of that same year in a plane crash.

Of course World War II established the supremacy of the carrier over the battleship - to the great chagrin of the battleship admirals. In addition to our well known stories of action in the pacific, here are articles on fighting the Germans in the North Atlantic, the British attack using the Swordfish at Taranto. Then came the big events: Pearl Harbor, Doolittle, Midway. After that came the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam and finally on to the Gulf and the Balkans.

Mr. Mersky has selected some of the best writing I've ever seen on military aviation. He has included a small amount of fiction, some humorous, some serious to go with the technical articles. It's a delightful read.

I was very interested in the subject. My neighbor and a close friend of ours served on the Enterprise. They remembered all that was written in this book.

It was sent very quickly and I appreciate all your good service over the years. This book was written for all the men and women who served on the ship. thanks for asking my opinion. PS We gave it to our neighbor who was very grateful , it is a keepsake for him. Thanks again Alberta Sakovich
