This book is Professor David Rempel's posthumous magnum opus. David Rempel was born in 1899 in Nieder Khortitsa, Ukraine, into the thriving Russian Mennonite community that had existed there since late 18th century. And as such, he was an eyewitness to the events recorded in this book, the events that surrounded the final destruction of the Mennonite community in Russia.

This book begins by tracing the migration on the Mennonites from Prussia to the Ukraine, and the growth of the Mennonite communities there. When the book gets to Professor Rempel's own era, it shifts, becoming a biography of himself and his immediate family. As this part of the story proceeds, you get to see the sad fate of the Russian Mennonites, seeing their experiences through the eyes of the author.

Now, I must say that I found this book to be both highly informative and very moving. The author does an excellent job of presenting the Russian Mennonites with all of their faults, as an imperfect people (as all are), who found themselves caught up in a catastrophe that they could not deal with.

I must admit that I cannot find words enough to express my feelings about this wonderful book, and fear that this review does not even begin to do it justice. Let me just say that I loved this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Russian Mennonites, or the fate of minorities in Revolutionary Russia.

Should be a Standard Synoptic Text
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-24
Carlson has written a profound book on synoptic systems. Unlike many meteorology texts, this book stresses physical understanding of synoptic systems through practical and lucid mathematical treatment. The physical insight Carlson provides so eloquently makes this an essential read for every student taking synoptic lab. Carlson explains abstruse topics (thermal vorticity for example) in a lucid and cogent manner. There are numerous case studies which are covered in depth and flow perfectly with the points Carlson wants to convey. The book does assume the reader has atleast a fundamental understanding of dynamics and thermo.

I would consider this book to be a perfect supplement to Bluestein's Vol I, Chapter 5, which is a rigorous mathematical treatment of QG theory. It would also serve well as an alternative view of synoptic systems to Bluestein's Vol II since the way they approach topics are considerably different. This book is essential reading for the student and the professional in the field. I would consider this to be the best book I have ever read on the subject despite a few obvious errors. Below are a listing of the chapters in the book:

1. Introduction and mathematical definitions
2. Vorticity and vertical motion
3. The vorticity and thermodynamic equation
4. QG forcing of vertical motions and surface pressure tendency
5. QG energetics
6. Evolution and motion of mid-tropospheric waves: Barotropic viewpoint
7. Simple dynamic models of wave/cyclone Development: Baroclinic Viewpoint
8. Alternative expressions for vertical motion and divergence
9. Some additional dynamic aspects of the baroclinic wave/cyclone. Effects of friction, terrain, and diabatic heating
10. The evolution of cyclones
11. Evolution of the wave/cyclone during cyclogenesis
12. Optimum wavelength and growth rate of baroclinic waves
13. Airflow through mid-latitude synoptic-scale disturbances
14. Aegeostrophic and the dynamics of fronts
15. Upper tropospheric fronts and jet streaks
16. Mid-tropospheric fronts, elevated mixed layers and the severe storm environment

Here is the electrifying story of Christian heroism that caught the world's imagination when first published in 1963 - the story of a California surgeon who took his family into the remote jungle of Congo to care for the sick and needy, only to be gunned down after being falsely accused of being a spy.

The horror of Dr. Paul Carlson's death on November 24, 1964, during a rescue attempt in Kisangani (then Stanleyville), evoked shocked reactions around the world. Lois Carlson Bridges, Paul's widow, traces the impact of his faith as he sought direction for his life, and the struggle the couple faced in choosing a life of hardship over the alluring comforts of a wealthy, suburban medical practice.

The sights and sounds of daily life at the Wasolo hospital - in the forgotten corner of the Ubangi region - spring from these pages, as do the tales of love that bonded the Carlsons and their Congolese brothers and sisters. The reader will sense the pain of separation as Paul Carlson bids farewell to his family and returns to care for his sick patients, only to be arrested and held hostage. Monganga Paul captures the deep faith and quiet heroism of this man who inspired those around him - and millions around the world - with his witness for Christ and selfless sacrifice on behalf of those he was called to serve.

THUMBS UP FOR THE MOUNTAIN OF TRUTH

It is poignant to write about this book, a cherished friend in my youth over thirty years ago, decades after I was first captivated by it. Just this month I read it again and found that it holds up surprisingly well.

The plot: Tibet is liberated and opened up to foreigners; children from different parts of the world attend summer camp in the foothills of the Himalayas, and there over the course of a few years some of them begin a covert training that leads them to develop extra-sensory powers to be used in the service of humanity. These behind-the-scenes activities are attended by triumphs on a world-scale, and also by bittersweet sacrifices and setbacks.

Two well-heeled Manhattan brothers are the main characters: The older by two years, Michael is born to the role of ascetic mystic-founder of the Order of the Mountain of Truth; Peter is more devoted to the ways and struggles of humanity, but his is ultimately the more sacrificing and heroic part to play.

Ms. Dale Carlson's style bespeaks dignity and compassion, but harsh realism too. Her noble view of "secret society" is, one is tempted to think, possibly grounded in actuality somewhere, in some fashion, today.

How about a sequel, Ms. Carlson?

Crossroads ahead -- spiritual works in progress!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-06
This intriguing collection of essays offers a way to connect with your spiritual core. It's much more than a self-help guide to finding God in challenging times - though it does celebrate the positive effects of trusting a higher power. Maybe you're not sure what that higher power is, or if somebody else's idea of God matches yours. That doesn't matter. The spirit has many faces in these pages, as varied as the world's religions, and as personal as whatever moral truth or compassionate principle you choose to honor.

Kottler and Carlson -- seasoned, respected psychologists each on his own spiritual journey -- approached this project with open minds and hearts about where a quest of this nature might lead. But they also brought along their expertly forged psychological tools for exploring and making accessible to all readers the philosophies they encountered. That opens wide the possibilities for anyone hungering for something more in life. Readers can experience the rush of life-changing mysterious influences as described in the essays, then apply the valuable insights emphasized by the authors to their own experiences, needs, and existential questions.

If you feel spiritually adrift, at a loss for a way to ease your distress and fill voids that material stuff just doesn't satisfy, this book can help you get focused and real. It offers lists of stimulating questions you can use to begin examining your own beliefs and purposes in life, along with key ideas, clearly stated, for genuine transformation. If you're looking for a way to use your faith to help make the world a better place, the voices in these personal accounts will inspire you toward fulfillment.

The story format resonates on a universal level, making this an extraordinarily inviting read. Because the essays are so personal and vary so widely in the definition of spirituality, they immediately broaden your perspective on faith and how to manifest it in your daily life. All of the contributors found themselves at a spiritual crossroads, and went off-road to pursue enlightenment. If this sounds too religious or New Age-y to you, be assured that following the spirit requires pulling up your bootstraps. The connecting theme is about discovering what's essential to your spirit -- and then acting on that realization. Real transformation, as this fine collection demonstrates, happens when the many crossroads you'll encounter lead to lasting changes in your behavior.

The book addresses how to use multimedia in higher education based on how to make teaching and learning more effective and efficient. In each chapter, the authors describe goals, general information, raise questions, summarize guidelines and provide examples, resources.
The questions are very thought-provoking, the guidelines are quite practical. The information and resources are very informative. And there are numerous insights about education, techonology, learning and teaching theories that the authors shared with readers.
A great book worth to buy.

This is one of the best in a series that went out of print a while back, and never should have. P.M. Carlson writes as well as or better than authors of similar series that have done much better commercially. Maggie Ryan lives in NYC with her actor husband; not a professional detective, crimes happen around her. The characters are very well developed and drawn, not only Maggie and her attractive husband, but the "local" characters in each book. No gruesomeness, but some really gripping scenes, and always a satisfying ending.

This beautifully illustrated book is a poem about love and the loves that a school-aged boy has. Along the way we encounter family and friends and the reader is left wondering who will receive the heart that the boy has made. The storytelling is engaging and the reader will surely not be disapointed in the end. I plan on giving this as a gift book to all who have made a memorable impact in my son's life.

This well written and beautifully illustrated book will be very helpful for any family who is going through or has been through divorce. In addition to the helpful message that it sends to the children of divorced families it reminds parents that they have a responsibility to keep the best interests of their children in the forefront.
