I'm planning an Itanium-based CRM solution for my company. This book helped me get it approved with management, and helped us reject a more expensive Sun-based sytem.

It's great to give to your managers to explain the new technology.

A Useful, Readable (Oxymoron?) tax guide
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-19
Many people of moderate wealth can learn tax planning from this book in a simple and accessible way, from anecdotes combined with excellent brief tax explanations. Younger (30 to 40) folks can benefit the most because they have more financial years to gain from good decisions made today.

As a manager of separate individual stock market accounts, I have been interested in financial planning, but skeptical. This book really reaches me because it offers simple real life examples where I see the point and recognize client situations which can benefit from the solutions.

Dunn uses high profile individuals for many of his cases, drawing from news reports and other sources. When you hear about very good and woefully bad decisions made by folks such as Sam Walton, Warren Buffet, Jackie Kennedy and many others, the magnitude of savings from good decisions really comes home. You will see good reasons to get some competent help.

Classic, Concise, and Rich from the Golden Age

There is always something about vintage things. When something defies its aging, defies time itself, then there ought to be something special about it.Not just because something is old, it can become special, but the fact that out of a possible collection, or competing group of things, when one survives the time and stays alive for generations, then it becomes special.

Also, it seems in the good old days, people were more systematic, strived for precision, accuracy, a hard desire to drive the truth clearly. some achieve this by being verbose, some being very concise.

Learn to Draw Comics, by George Carlson is certainly one special item. first published in 1933, its such a gem even today. It takes the concise route. I got a copy of the book recently, and since then I am loving it.

His style is simple and clear, something reminding us of Herge and his Ligne Claire(The clear Line), did he read this book?.

The book teaches us how to draw comics in under 60 pages. Here are some of the key topics covered..

Drawing the Head and Expressions, the author prescirbes a simple method to draw the head in different poses, the various elements of the face and some variations in the features of the face.

Then he presents us with 16 facial expressions, very clearly made. they are Joy-contentment, Pleasant surprise, Laughter, Grief-worry, Weeping, Anger, Determination, surprise, Fright-terror, The yawn,Stupidity, contempt, the wink, Discomfort, Hauteur, and Blank Wonder. Then he illustrates these on several faces. beautiful stuff. I think using these we should cover majority of situation in any scene.

Then the Figure is taken up. Simple figure construction, method of drawing action of the figure, various examples of everyday activities. Different character types are shown.

Then a bit of perspective, Effects, Shadows, silhouette, Composition etc.

Animals are taken up next, comic versions of barnyard, pet and wild animals are shown how to construct.

Carlson concludes by telling how to create comic strips and how one gets it published.

This must have been a treasure in the hands of budding artists during the Golden era of comic creation. It is no less a treasure today.

Though each individual topic is an ocean in itself, for example figure drawing can be a life-long learning process, the book presents all essential artifacts needed, and with practice of what is in the book, one can very simply and effectively learn how to draw comics.

Common Sense Spoken Here.

The very first sentence of this will grab and pull you in: "Young people with learning disabilities sometimes commit suicide."

I thought this would be a book about learning disabilities like attention deficit disorder and dyslexia, and it is. What I didn't know or understand are the far-reaching consequences of undiagnosed and mis- or unmanaged symptoms! Although frustrating for the sufferer, learning disabilities can do more than keep them back a grade. However, treatment and low-cost (and some no-cost!) methods are available and outlined in this plain-speaking, easily understood guide. Trudy Carlson knows her topic. Not only has she taught university classes in child developmental psychology (which I thought would make her difficult to understand) but she also lived with dyslexia and attention deficit/hyperactive disorder, so she speaks from experience. Clearly written, well-thought out and practical, I'd recommend this book especially to grade school teachers, but others will benefit as well. Very helpful; very informative. Well done!

I recommend the book Lewis and Clark and Davey Hutchins because it is historical fiction, and you can learn about the expedition of Lewis and Clark between 1803 and 1806. Nolan Carlson wrote the book from a 14-year old young adult viewpoint. Another reason I recommend the book is because it tells an exciting adventure for ages 7 and up. Also, it keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book. The book has something for everyone, including animal-lovers. I highly recommend this book, and, after you read it, you will too.

Mother Teresa Protector of the Sick
By: Linda Carlson

This is a great story I would recommend this but anyone from 8 and older. This book tells you about how someone so little can do something so big. Mother Teresa's first name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa was born in 1910in a city called Skopje. Her mother took care of all the children and her dad was a grocer. At age 12 she first felt desire to belong completely to god. At the age of 18, she went to Calcutta to learn to be a nun, after awhile she felt another calling from god and it was to help others so she left the place to work in the slums of India. Soon others joined her and she made other groups. All of her people helped others, giving them clean places to die, gave all she had and more than others would have. So enjoy this book!

The collaborative work of decorated combat photographer Angelo M. Spinelli and Lewis H. Carlson (Professor Emeritus of History at Western Michigan University), Life Behind Barbed Wire: The Secret World War II Photographs Of Prisoner of War is the amazing and original collection 100 impossible to forget images that preserve a portrait of what an American soldier's life was like when held in captivity by German forces in World War II. The text goes in fascinating and informative detail concerning ways the prisoners struggled to survive, ranging from attempts to cook what delicacies they could from red cross rations, snow, and margarine; to coping with vermin infestations; even trading with their captors. Life Behind Barbed Wire is a very highly recommended photo history of enduring through difficult times and circumstances.

The author managed to transport me back in time to the day of Daniel. The way she portrayed him from his childhood through his adult life made me feel as if he were an old friend. It was wonderful to re-live the ordeal of the fiery furnace. Overall, I just came away from the book with a renewal of the value that it is always right to do the right thing.
