Andrea Carey has collected bits of wisdom both she and her mother learned through out their life. Rarely do we take time to truly learn who our mothers are. Even more rarely do we take time to truly listen to what they've learned from life. Instead we prefer to learn our wisdom the hard way. Ms Carey originally wrote this book for her daughter. "We wanted to be able to leave a record--to say, `These are the things we want you to know,' even after we were no longer here to say them." This book contains "advice and wisdom picked up from both family and friends as we had traveled through life."

Only after Andrea's mother was diagnosed with cancer did she "truly come to appreciate this woman as a person--full of humor, grand schemes, ideas, and laughter." The two made the transition from mother/daughter to friends. Andrea is from a long line of "southern women who would not hesitate to tell you exactly what they thought about anything, and could deliver even harsh truths while making sure you understood they loved you anyway." The advice and wisdom is simple, and down to earth. "Many girls out there face the challenges and unknowns of growing up with out anyone to share life lessons with them. The world is a different place for our daughters than it was in our generation, and it's light-years from what it was in our mothers' time. Yet some truths still apply, and some experiences are universal."

Just a few of the items discussed are: "The girls you see in magazines and on TV look a lot like you in real life. ", "Don't let food become a crutch or an enemy--it is neither." "Anything worth having must be earned." "There are so many wonderful things out there. Be sure to fully love and live the life you have." "Other people's opinions can't affect you unless you let them." Sounds simple doesn't it. So why did it take me so long to learn these things. Come to think of it some of them I still haven't learned.

I like this book. Ms Carey has conveyed her messages in a simple, straightforward manner. The messages may be simple but so important. I wonder, what if I'd read this earlier in my life? Would I have made the same decisions? Both of my granddaughters will be receiving a copy of this book, when they can read. My daughter and daughters-in-law may also be receiving a copy. This would make an excellent Christmas gift! Thank you Andrea!

My sister wrote this book as a labor of love
for her daughter, my beloved niece,
when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.
She wanted to write down the little bits of wisdom
my mom and me and her would have for my neice.
She didn't want to lose any due to my mother's
untimely passing, and my mother loved us all very much.
This is a little compilation for girls, and grown girls,
and kids and grown kids everywhere
of lines that maybe someone who loved
you would have put in your ear.

A must for young girls

This book is perfect in helping young girls deal with everyday situations. Good common sense which is often overlooked. It lets a young girl know she is not alone in her thoughts and feelings. I highly recommend this book for daughters and mothers.

After reading this book,I now understand why my acting "career" never took off. The authors have explained things in such a way as to make me feel absolutely stupid for not having seen things more clearly when I was taking my shot at the silver screen. Sadly, my time for that has passed me by, but my daughter is reading the book so I doubt she'll make the mistakes I did. As to the technique, it is nothing short of revolutionary and should send shock waves through the fraternity of acting coaches. The added benefit to my wife and I is that my daughter needn't be leaving home just to get things going in Hollywood.

I LOVED it! This is a great read, even if you have no desire to be "in Hollywood."
You will see movies in a whole new light after reading this.
The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and their witty responses are, by themselves, worth the price of the book.
I came away understanding how the "star system" works, why we support it, who REALLY hires the people we see on screen and WHY they are hired.
I was particularly excited by the "action/reaction technique" the authors describe. FINALLY someone explains what we're seeing on the screen in the great performances... and what is missing in the ordinary and lousy ones.
I started paying attention to people on the screen that I'd sort of ignored before. I now have greater insights to the performances I see. I recommend it HIGHLY!

Brilliant thinking!

This book outlines a rather novel approach to the quest for a career in Hollywood. My opinion is that it can be successfully applied with very little modification here in the UK.
Additionally, the acting technique described in this book is brilliant and I've found an immediate improvement in my own acting talents as a result of having studied it. This is not an admission I make lightly!
I highly recommend it to those seeking a career in front of the camera.

Forget about those 1000-page reference books. Learn by doing thats what I personally believe in. This excellent book contains many examples that you may encounter in real life. The authors will guide you step-by-step through the assignments in the 12 tutorials. The concepts behind each task are well-explained. If you need more hands-on practice, there are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter. By the time you complete the course, you will be confident and eager to impress your boss with your newly-learnt Excel skills.

If you're not a programmer, and you want to learn Excel, skip those fat books full of pictures, and don't waste your money on authors that think you're stupid. This isn't some magic bullet; you still have to do the work. I think, however, that this is a better use for your money than one of those 1000-page wastelands. If you're a self-motivated scrapper, this won't just gather dust while you wait for the recycling truck. Get the comprehensive (expert) edition. After you get through this material, you can find a good reference work.(I'm still looking.)

I had this book for an Advanced Microcomputer Applications class. I found the tutorial style really nice, but I think that you really need to do the additional exercises in the the back of the chapters to really understand the material. I think the material on the use of "solver" and pivot tables were rather well done. I think someone who is trying to teach themselves without a teacher could make good use of this book.

A massive resource

This book is an eminently well-presented resource containing information on most, if not all, the races in China. Packed with verified statistics (references given), this is not simply a dry and boring text - there is at least one full colour photograph of each racial group along with a full page writeup of their culture, beliefs, location, language and ethnic history.
At the front is an overview of China, Chinese (both the people and the language) and a background of the contents and methods used to collect it.

This book is fascinating to me, a long-term student of Chinese, and a Christian in a Chinese Church. For days I flipped through it reading more and more interesting material - I couldn't put it down!

One aspect jumped out at me, and that is the small graph on each page describing the proportion of people who had not heard the Gospel, the proportion who don't (yet) believe after hearing the Gospel, and the proportion of practicing Christians. What jumped out was the graph for the Lisu people. Whereas most graphs showed 80 to 90% had not heard the Gospel, and only 4 or 5% were practicing Chrisitans, the Lisu were different with over 40% being practicing Christians. Why? Whilst it is hinted at in the text, I'm convinced that this is mostly the result of one man giving up over 20 years of his life to work as missionary in Lisuland: James O Fraser. He laboured year in, year out, taking more than 5 years before seeing his first convert, until finally the Holy Spirit swept through those villages like a storm. So strong were the conversions that the Lisu, perhaps alone of all Chinese races, survived the Cultural Revolution with their church intact.

This shows the difference that one soul can make to this world. Maybe this could be *you* in future?

Have you ever wondered why some races get so big while others are so small?

Have you ever wondered why modern ethnic divisions so closely follow the boundaries of nation-states?

Hattaway doesnt attempt to answer these questions directly. But this book is a cornucopia of the relevant raw data, as concerns the vast area we now know as China.

Centuries of absorptive imperial policy have erased millenia of fascinating political, cultural, and genetic history in China's core regions. In most parts of China, practically everyone is raised to think of themselves as simply part of the "Chinese" ethnic, cultural, and political monolith.

Modern continuations of those imperial policies regrettably ban almost all politically non-motivated research, meaning very little accurate information is available. But at the edges of the empire, where the digestive processes have only had a few centuries to work, there is still a lot of colorful variety to be observed. And thankfully, there are still-independent neighboring nations from which to document those observations.

From a vantage point in nearby Thailand, where many of the same ethno-genetic blocs are represented, Hattaway has been able to glean enough information to weave together a remarkably extensive picture of the ethnic situation within China, primarily its South and Southwest.

The resulting tapestry is a valuable collection of information for anyone, whether their interest is in global evangelism like the author, or in more secular perspectives: Human anthropology, Southeast Asian history, minority affairs come to mind--anything that involves the relationships between genetics, geography, politics, and culture.

The real world is much more complicated than the two questions I started out with would imply. Ethnicity and geography are of course much richer things than simplistic abstractions like race and nation allow for.

I heartily commend Hattaway's effort to document that particular part of this world.

If you have used Operation World to pray for peoples in the world, and you have a heart for the Chinese people -- you got to have Operation China! I am a Chinese from Taiwan, and honestly, I didn't know there are almost 500 people groups in China! This book introduces every people groups in China briefly. It talks about their location, identity, language, customs, religion, and Christianity influence and effort on each group. Best of all, I especially love the photo of each people group. Honestly, when I was just flipping through the pages and looking at those people's faces -- the book touches me so much and I was weeping... because I know that God had created them all and He loves them so much. But not many of them know who He is or even His existence. I was so humbled by God because of His greatness -- I'm a Chinese from Taiwan, but I'm only a small part of the 500 people groups who lives in China! This book helps me to understand the urgency of reaching those people groups and again shows me the heart of God -- as illustrated in Luke 15, that He would go for the 1 lost sheep and leave the 99 behind. God loves those minority in China as well... no matter how small a group they might be, they're still the 1 lost sheep to Him and He will go search for them until they are found. Praise God for the efforts that different people had put into this book!

I must begin by saying I am eternally grateful to Mr. Paul Hattaway. Operation China has been the best resource book on China's minorities that I have read. I bought it a couple of years ago and have not stopped reading it yet. Whenever I am feeling down or discouraged, I pick up my copy of Operation China and get encouraged and inspired once again. I must give God many thanks for Paul. We need more individuals with such committed hearts and a desire to see the Will of God accomplished in their lives like him.

I bought this book while i was in australia in 1988 and I had never heard of it or the writer but I thought it was a wonderful book and the thing I liked best was that anyone who was growing up during those times attending school dealing with stupid peers parents pushing us around etc. could relate... i was 18 and found the thought of these girls trying for these guys to be sad but true... The appeal of the book for me was that the themes were "universal kid angst" (reminded me of the film "Over the Edge") and the ending is great! Worth a read for a bit of nostalgia of the 70s and 80s.

This book is the semi autobiographical account of two 13 year old girls Deb and Sue. Deb and Sue are DESPERATE to be in the "cool" crowd at school, namely with the surfers and they will do ANYTHING to get acceptd as part of this group. This book takes me back to my teenage years when I was geek who could never get a date on Saturday night .Deb and Sue experiment with drugs, alcohol and and sex and these two girls are not the type you would want to bring home to meet your family. Thankfully the book does have a happy ending. All of thge "cool surfer dudes " end up in Prison or dying from a Heroin overdose while all the Major League Geeks that Sue and Deb never had any time for all went on the become Computer Programmers earning $150,000 per year!!!Who says there is no such thing as Poetic Justice?

"Puberty Blues" can be read in a few hours. It's a short novel, written in simple, yet clever teenage prose. The Aussie vernacular used in this book is hilarious, and Sydney-siders will definitely relate to its setting (Cronulla). Two 13 year old girls, Deb and Sue, seek to get out of "Dickheadland" and into the Greenhill gang who are surfie and respected. Puberty Blues marks the journey of 2 girls from "nurd" to "cool", and speaks in detail about the sacrifices they make to get there. They manage to snare cool boyfriends, but they must go to desperate lengths to keep them around and not get "dropped". The girls experiment with drugs, sex and relationships throughout the book. Watching them willingly subordinate themselves to their older boyfriends is tough on the reader, who has probably been there at one stage in her early life. Infact, much of the journey of these precocious girls is familiar and therefore absolutely relevant to adolescent females everywhere, especially Australia. It's like the feminized answer to J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye". The ending is satisfying and ultimately life-affirming. Overall, a thoroughly worthwhile book.

An Indispensable Interpretive History of the Region
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-28
Carey McWilliams has been called "the single finest nonfiction writer on California--ever." This book, along with *California: The Great Exception* (1949), helped establish that reputation. Drawing on McWilliams's deep insight and remarkable versatility--he moved easily between the worlds of politics, law, literature, and journalism--this book, even after six decades, still captures the spirit and energy of a region that seems to remake itself continuously. *Southern California* has influenced not only journalists and academics, but also artists. One of its chapters, for example, inspired Robert Towne's Oscar-winning original screenplay for *Chinatown* (1974).

Unlike most historians, McWilliams also made history by serving in state government, arguing against the Japanese internment during World War II, and defending the rights of workers, minorities, and the unjustly accused--frequently in high-profile cases such as the Sleepy Lagoon murder trial and the Hollywood 10. In one critical area after another, McWilliams mapped the social and political territory, raised the main issues, distilled the key facts, and proposed the most practical remedies. He's probably the most versatile American public intellectual of the 20th century, and *Southern California* is one of his masterpieces. Highly recommended.

A Critical Contribution to Social and Economic History!

Review Date: 1999-04-16
Originally published in 1946, McWilliams describes the socio-historical and economic formations of Southern California from the "bottom up" in a way uncharacteristic for his time period. He unveils the racist, eurocentric, environmentally devastating, materialistic and otherwise ruthless basis for the area's hegemonic culture, economy, and social relations. Moreover, he adds great insight into the incorporation of California into the world capitalist system. He covers the use, abuse, and devastation of various peoples in the area including Native Americans, Californios, Chinese, Japanese, Oklahomans and Mexicans. He also offers insight into the materialism or 'fake' culture which has emerged from the area only to exploit the cultures it has destroyed. The book is a bit long winded at times, but overall is a must read for anyone intersted in the topics I've described. It would be of interest to anyone who appreciates Almaguer's Racial Faultlines, Pitt's The Californios, or even Montejano's Anglos and Mexicans in the Making of Texas.

For all residents of Southern California past, present, or potential, there can be no better book about this unmatchable part of the world. Past residents (like myself) will sigh with fond remembrance, current residents will be amused, and potential future residents will be astonished. All will be entertained. The land, the geography, the history, and the weather. They're all discussed. The social outcasts, the wierd misfits, the kooks, the characters, and their schemes and dreams. It's all here, along with so very much more. Written by a longtime resident in a very entertaining style that combines dinner conversation with classroom lecture, this book will be a joy to anyone who has a love for the irreplacable experience of Living In Southern California. You will truly FEEL as though you are there. This book is one for the heart as well as the mind. Oh Los Angeles, how I miss you. Carey McWilliams, thanks for taking me back.

....California historian known to me, with his pithy style, his endlessly fascinating observations, and his anecdotes, rich in history and amusing in detail, which unlike the rivers of my state flow one after the other without any damming. I'm a native of Southern California, and I have yet to find a better book on this territory even though this one was originally penned in the late 40's.

The colonizers, the boosters, the flamboyant pillars of society who bamboozled, bulldozed, and boutiqued their way into California: they and other characters appear on the McWilliams stage in a fascinating--and at times disturbing--progression in which the land itself, that most neglected of characters, puts in appearances too. For we Southern Californians live in a land of constant paradoxes; to quote the author ("The Land of Upside Down"):

"To their amazement"--he means tourists--"they discovered that umbrellas were useless against the drenching rains of Southern California but that they made good shade in the summer; that many of the beautifully colored flowers had no scent; that fruit ripened earlier in the northern than in the southern part of the state; that it was hot in the morning and cool at noon...here, in this paradoxical land, rats lived in the trees and squirrels had their homes in the ground." No wonder we're all a bit topsy-turvy out here.

My one objection: I disagree with the author's description of the early Missions as "concentration camps." That through disease and, later, a mis-education that left the Native converts vulnerable to ranchero exploitation and settler genocide is beyond question; but however misguided their efforts, those early padres had no conscious agenda of wiping out a people. Nevertheless, McWilliams's detailed accounts of Mission life provide a much-needed antidote to the idealization and denial and Eurocentric bias that saturate most Mission histories.

If you want to know Southern California better, then of course you must stand on her soil and listen to her voices; but you could do much worse for an intro-at-a-distance than this fine book, which fellow natives will find confirming and eye-opening.

While this is an ultimately satisfying novel, it does start off very slowly and you need to be patient with it. The story of a family dealing with their young daughter's disfiguring and fatal illness is touching and realistic. Told from the father's perspective we come to realize that all parents experience many of the same joys, heartaches, and frustrations, whether their children are healthy or terminally ill. A quiet, thoughtful book that I will remember fondly.

Amazing, here is a book with no disfunctional personalities, noevil, manipulative people, no extraordinary violence or disasters;only everyday people who are dealing with a difficult life situation with honesty and hope and courage. Boring? Not a bit. Thoughtful and compelling, holds your interest? Absolutely. Jim Kaldy, the narrator of this story, is your not so average man with a wonderfully healthy perspective of his own childhood, and a courageous perspective towards his ailing daughter's childhood. Worthy of Oprah's book group. We loved it in ours.

I have shelves and shelves of books on parenting and none of them demonstrate and describe so clearly how easily the cycle of dysfunction and abuse is transmitted across generations; and how this does not need to take place.

It's message is very uplifting and hopeful. No matter how bad things were in your family of origin, you CAN break the cycle of abuse and neglect and create a working, functional family for your children. Carey Sipp demonstrates how it can be done: It takes courage, self-reflection and self-honesty, yes! But she goes further than that, there are practical steps you can and must follow: extreme self-care, recovery from addictions, the dedication to building a support system and then consistently asking for help and feedback from your community and friends, and the willingness to slow down and think things through.

Each chapter focuses on one of these necessary changes and is beautifully organized into four parts:
1. A description of an aspect of the authors own toxic childhood
2. A description of how she almost repeats that aspect with her own children
3. How she manages to turn it around and be a functional mother
4. Practical steps for how the reader can turn it around.

I recommend this book to all moms. There is something here for each and everyone of us.

This great book helped motivate me to change and be the kind of mom I want to be. Ms. Sipp in her honest and open account about her life and her process to change inspired me and now I buy a book for all the women in my life to inspire them. Thanks!

In The Turnaround Mom, Carey Sipp goes back into her past and shares with us how living life with an alcoholic and violent father was. She offers us the tools to end the legacy of toxicity. She shows us how victims of family abuse and domestic violence can overcome their past and serve as role models for their children.

Her book inspires and demonstrates how it is possible to break the cycle of addiction and raise healthy, happy children. I think it was GREAT.....

In a field as highly esoteric and frequently as academically 'dry' as that of chemical and biological warfare, it is always both surprising and delightful to stumble across a book that manages to successfully span the yawning chasm that invariably separates pure academia and popular reference.

In his book, author Carey has provided a wonderfully interesting book that will surely attract a broad range of interest from an equally wide range of readers. Ostensibly an illustrated reference on the historical development of American military NBC respirators (popularly known as 'gasmasks'), the book combines a wealth of excellent visual reference material with an interesting and frequently quite droll accompanying narrative. Having spent a number of years in the Middle East, working for the Saudi Arabian government on medically related programs both before and after the Gulf war of 1991, Carey is excellently positioned to speak on this subject with convincing authority.

Anyone who has had even the most remote interest in protective measures developed for use against chemical or biological threats will immediately find this book both informative and stimulating. Regrettably, public interest in the deadly threat posed to modern civilisation by modern chemical and biological war agents is, as history shows us time and time again, extremely short lived. During the 'Gulf War I' of 1991, public interest in this subject was so great that whole families and private citizens were buying 'gasmasks' for their own protection against feared attacks with these deadly (NBC, or 'Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical') agents. As soon as that war had ended and Saddam Hussein had been shown to have not used his much feared NBC weapons, this same fevered-pitch public interest just as quickly dissipated. There is no doubt at all in mjy mind that in future, similar moments of unanticipated panic and fear over terrorist use of these weapons will again spark renewed interest in the subject of Carey's book.

This is a book that is equally at home on the scientist's reference shelf or the casual reader's coffee table. It will certainly provoke much interest and speculation, upon even a casual read-through. In dealing with the subject matter chosen for this work as he has, Carey has created a truly unique book that will likely stand alone as the best possible reference of its kind to be found anywhere in the world for many, many years. I recommend this large format and bountifully illustrated book without reservation, as being well worth its price.

Super reference book on the subject! I have been collecting for years and I still learned something from Chris' Book. Highly recommended reference for the historian or collector! As there is no other available except military publications, I cannot compare it to others. However, unlike the military Technical Manuals, this book covers every mask in one book with real photos as opposed to many books with drawings! Recommended!!

A must for the collector and Chemical Warfare historian.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any militaria enthusiast. The book contains a beautiful photo section and an accurate history on chemical warfare and US gas masks in particular. Carey's extensive research brings us a long overdue source for information on the subject at a very affordable price.
