Being Active and Reflective

As a shoemaker, William Carey developed his mind. When later he worked as a translator, he worked with his hands for leisure in gardening, etc. This man had an uncanny ability to develop spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and recreationally. He didn't have much time for leisure, but he made the most of all of his time developing his personal life and the life of those around him. He was very curious, so he invested his time and effort in a way that gave him relaxation and mission in life. This is an amazing person that I admire deeply.

Carey's understanding of the relationship between the gospel and development. (p. 62-64)

Carey made huge and important, even foundational, contributions in botany, industry, economy, medical humanitarianism, print technology, agriculture, translation, education, astronomy, libraries, forest conservation, women's rights, public service, moral reform, and cultural transformation in India. His efforts still speak to us today of the true meaning of mission and world evangelization. But his understanding is different than that of most modern Christians. Why? Carey was an evangelist who used every available means to be a light in every dark facet of Indian life with the gospel of truth. Because of this, he is a central figure in the story of India's modernization and development.
Carey believed that conversion-or the change of one's character and false beliefs-was the only effective means of social reform.

Three Presuppositions of Carey's Reforms:

1. Salvation is God's work. A reformer's primary duty is to pray.

2. Creation is rational, not magical or mystical. Carey believed that God's revelation alone could remove superstition and help the Indian people develop a confidence in human rationality-a prerequisite for development.

3. Moral rebellion is at the root of our human problems. Carey believed poverty and human suffering is a result of man's refusal to live under the moral authority of our heavenly Father.

Five ways this book will help you better achieve your goals where you live:

1. Demonstrating and highlighting learning through revelation, particularly in the study of the sciences.

2. Demonstrating a strong commitment to work hard and sacrifice.

3. Demonstrate a commitment to unity and working with the body of christ.

4. Demonstrate a revelation of the meaning of conversion through our choice of ministry activities and evangelistic efforts.

5. Demonstrate a shift in the presentation of the gospel from the gospel of salvation (consumer) to the gospel of vocation (the call of god to true freedom).

Britt Towery has written a beautiful tale of a family called to missionary service at the turn of the twentieth century. It reads like a novel, with a gripping plot, fascinating characters and an unbelievable story. But this is not fiction: this is the true story of Jewell and Carey who met in Texas but had to go all the way to China to fall in love.

I first became acquainted with the story of Jewell and Carey when I researched and wrote All That Fits a Woman: Training Southern Baptist Women for Charity and Mission (Mercer University Press). Towery has more thoroughly researched their fascinating story, finding little known details about the family and their Christian service.

Using personal interviews, letters, diaries, and other historical documents, Towery skillfully weaves the stories of the two Southern Baptist leaders, keeping readers intrigued all the way through until the final outcome. Jewell grew up with missionary parents in South Texas and went to Baylor where she studied theology in preparation for mission work. Carey attended Baylor as well and interrupted his studies periodically to preach in rural churches around Texas. Both Carey and Jewell ended up in Louisville, KY for further preparation. When Jewell set sail for China as a single woman in 1909, she did not realize that Carey would sail the following year and the two would eventually be married in 1914. I won't spoil the story by telling the ending: I hope you will read it for yourself!

One of the most helpful aspects of the book for me as a researcher was the Introduction, which describes the Shandong Province where Jewell and Carey were serving. Towery provides a summary of Chinese religions and a useful glossary of places, including how to pronounce their names. Towery has the expertise to provide these summaries, as he served over 30 years as a missionary in Asia. He thoughtfully reproduces some of the original materials in an appendix; the most touching is a letter Carey wrote from China and sent to his father.

Towery uses such good information, and serious researchers may be frustrated that he has not consistently documented his sources with footnotes. However, his purpose was to tell a fascinating and inspiring story of two dedicated servants of the Lord, and that he has done very well.

This small book is a great afternoon read for anyone interested in missions and missionaries, and it is accessible enough to be used in mission study groups with young people or adults.

An indepth look into the life Carey Francis 1897-1966 written by his close friend. He worked in Kenya from 1928 until he died. A Man of great strength and some weakness; but above all a man who whole life was centred on the service of God. The books divides the chapters into the different schools he attended and oversaw. He had a crucial role in the developement of Alliance High School which was an important training ground for the African elite who later became policatical and adminstrative figures in Kenya. The book highites Francis' influence in Kenya by including remarks given at his funeral.

The book includes 10 pages of photographs and an index. AN uncommon title.

My daughter gave Carolina Preserves to me for my birthday and I love it. Anyone who lives in North Carolina (or who has an interest in the state) would thoroughly enjoy the short essays by noteworthy North Carolinians and the beautiful artwork by William Mangum. Mangum's wonderful artistic talent captures in detail many of the treasured sites located in our beautiful state from the mountains to the coast. As stated on the book's cover, it is "an artist's perspective of North Carolina with reflections from some of the state's most unique personalities."Although rather expensive for the average person to buy, one can understand the high cost after seeing the book because of its size and quality. For those who can afford it, it is a beautiful "coffee table centerpiece" that "preserves" our North Carolina heritage.

This is truly a classic biography as well as a howling comedy about a family of 13: parents Frank & Lillian Gilbreth...plus 11 kids, a handyman, various relatives & their employees, numerous livestock, pets, and incidental swains of the girls as they got older. It's only major fault is - it's WAY too short! Everyone should have a copy, to read, & re-read, & re-re-read. I've worn out 6 copies of mine.

Wonderful, inventive read from a highly talented writer!

Carey Wallace has one of the most fluid, engaging writing styles I've recently come upon. Her novel, CHOOSE, is a highly innovative work -- a "choose your own adventure" novel for adults -- and an enormously addictive read. The novel boasts more than 70 unique endings, more than enough to keep even the most dedicated reader busy and engaged. But more than that, Carey Wallace's evocative prose captures a wonderful noir mood, casts her setting in sepia tones, and renders her characters as three dimensional people, yet somehow ghostly at the same time.

This is the first book from a very talented young writer. I've enjoyed reading CHOOSE, and have given the novel out as gifts, particularly to those readers who feel that they've "seen it all." I look forward with great anticipation to Carey Wallace's future works.

A balanced message!

This easy to read book is a hidden gem. There are many books on this topic, but I found this to be a message that I can use in my daily Christian walk. Muslims are children of God too (we all are.) This book will show how following the way of love that the Bible teaches will win many more followers to Jesus than apologetics and arguements. This book makes a number of points that I had to really ponder before I could accept, but after prayer and reflection of the scriptural validity of each point, I decided to adjust my stance from that of fear and avoidance of the Muslim community, to being open and welcoming to the Muslim people who live in my community.

Lively account of the Reconquest of Granada.

Washington Irving is known to most americans as the author of Rip Van Winkle and Sleepy Hollow -but he was also a hispanophile and historian, and wrote this account of the 'reconquista' - the series of events and military campaigns that led to the expulsion of the moors after 700 years on the Iberian peninsula.

Despite his obvious love of all things Spanish, the account is quite balanced even showing sympathy for the Moors. Despite being written over 150 years ago Irving's prose is lively and engaging.

This particular edition is a reprint small press and pretty good quality.

The spiritual journey of George Carey, from rector to Archbishop of Canterbury. If our church survives its stodgy services and radical priests, then George Carey will deserve much of the credit. He is a spiritual giant among those who would turn this ancient tradition into an anything-goes modernism.
