I have been writing and teaching writing and workshops for 12 years. Michael's book is one of those I can't get by without. Simple enough for kids and as valuable for beginners and advanced writers. I love it!

An excellent book for teaching poetry in an unusual way

Michael Carey does an excellent job of explaining what poetry really is and shows you how to get your students or yourself to push the limits of their/your creative thought. He uses the knowledge of metaphors and similies in all of his poetry writing assignments. By the time you are done, you start to see metaphors and similies all over the place. I have used this as a teacher for three years. One students said, "I never liked poetry before but now that I understand it, I love it."

Carey's PRIVATE MEDICAL PRACTICE: GETTING IT STARTED & MAKING IT WORK should be on the "required reading" list of any health care practitioner nearing the end of their training, and for those contemplating a new job offer. Aimed primarily at physicians, all health care providers will find useful information on topics such as writing a CV, evaluating practice opportunities, personnel management and administration, financial and risk management and managed care. She includes a "Twelve-month" plan on starting a new practice that takes in to account every little detail that may crop up. Carey is well-qualified as an author having over 15 years experience as a practice management consultant for physicians. As a military physician preparing to enter civilian life, this book was a lifesaver.

Rare Insight into Life as Confederate Soldier
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-15
This is the story of David Carey Nance, a young Texas farmer caught up in the Civil War as soldier in William H. Parsons' Texas cavalry. This not only the story of a Confederate soldier but it also sheds new light on one of the most famous mounted units in the service of the Confederacy.

It was a great insight to the good people of the South

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it painted a very realistic picture of the mainstream people of the South, that they were good honest, God fearing people, and had more common sense than the people up North. Also, that they weren't cruel slave-beaters like most history books depict them to be. The man put 14 years of research into this book, and so the accuracy of it is unquestionable. I highly recommend anyone to read it, it is only 135 pages long, short enough for anyone.

There are none better! Other than home-made calendars, no other company even publishes rat calendars. The photographs are delightfully well-presented and the calendar itself is of high quality paper and presentation.

Thank you Browntrout!

Okay, so rat lovers will never compete with purebred dog fanciers in the calendar and tee shirt and "I (heart) My Pet" knick-knack market... but those who love fancy rodents will find this calendar a must-own! The portraits capture the essence of rattiness... in the best possible way!

As a fellow longtime Alaska bush resident, I have long admired this book and believe it to be among the best two or three ever written on the collision between contemporary Alaska Native culture and the world Outside. This book was a masterpiece when it was written (especially those parts focusing on the life of his Yu'pik friend) and to this day remains a candidate for the most overlooked and under-read book focusing on modern Alaska Native life. No varnish or overwrought cultural worship, just an empathetic, realistic account. This book is brave and unflinching and inspired me as a writer. I wrote Carey a letter years ago telling him how much I appreciated this book and I still feel the same. Read it if you can find it. Carey and his gem of a book deserved far better than they got. --Nick Jans, contributing editor, Alaska Magazine.

Good enough for me to write the author and tell him so.

This book is lyrical, yet full of the stark reality of life in Bush Alaska--and in this case, the raw bleakness and strange loveliness found uniquely on the Lower Kuskokwim River. (The memories I have of that place are stored wherever one keeps suppressed rememberances of lonely places in the mind.) I wonder if the spring floods still carry the dump down through the middle of town at Bethel

S.W.A.T. by Diane Cary is a thrilling book that keeps its reader constantly on the edge of their seat. The author makes sure to always keep the reader interested. I couldn't put this book down and read its 276 pages in 2 days. You are actually placed into this book as Jim Street, the main character. This was a good book. It was well written so that you knew what was happening around the characters. "He walked to the Crown Victoria and got in-to find that Hondo was already inside, lounging back in the passenger seat, shuffling through seven or eight personal files." The words that the author has chosen were specific but understandable. "Street stood there alone. He'd pleaded, hoped, mourned, fought for this moment. Now that it was here, he actually wasn't sure what to do. If he showed up at seven o'clock in the morning, he could just as easily be shot down in front of all the other officers chosen for this team." The dialauge was always enjoyable, weather it was serious, or hilarious. ""She's like, how's she gonna take care of the kids if something happens to me, right? So I call State Farm, looking for some extra life insurance, and when I tell the sister I work S.W.A.T., guess what she does."
"Laughs?" T.J. suggested.
"Hangs up?" Boxer threw in.
"The woman laughs her ass off, then she hangs up on me!""

Better Then Than The Movie!!!! I would give it 10 stars!!!

First off, if you haven't seen this movie, go! Now! It is easily, besides the matrix trilogy, the best movie out there. Action, Thirller, Mystery, Humor, Everything. Then, you can buy this book, which is probably, besides the lord of the rings trilogy, the best movie book ever made. By far. This has even more suspense than the movie. The author did a supurb job at describing the action. You can thank me later. Have fun. :-D

This book was sent to me by a friend who knows I collect children's books. I had never heard of Hudson Talbott before, nor had I heard of this book.

It's fabulous! Safari Journal will appeal to both girls and boys ages 7 to 15, as well some adults. My 5 year old daughter asked me to read it the day it arrived, and she sat through the whole story, although it was quite a long story for a 5 year old! (I'm not so sure this would be typical, though.)

I love the photographs, the innovative way factual information is interwoven within a funny, adventureous story and the feeling that you are reading the actual journal of this 12 1/2 year old.

Side note: If you've ever been to Disney World's Animal Kingdom Lodge and liked it, you'll LOVE this book. It highlights the same animals you'll see there and the same people that are showcased in the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Fabulous Must Have Book!

This Book is a great innovative book that is a 12 1/2 year old's fictious journal of his African Safari. There is action, adventure, humor and factual information about african animals, Swahili words, Massai people and wildlife preserves in Africa.

It's the most innovative children's book I've seen in a long time and will appeal to any child between the ages of 6 and 15. DON'T HESITATE -- BUY THIS BOOK! (you won't regret it!)

It's a must have! If you're starting a new artistic business of any kind this book is the first to read...and read...and read... It's important to do all she says, if you read the book but not take action...is like going to the doctor, but not taking the medicine...

THE book for artists who want to succeed

Starving Artist No More is a brilliant approach to making money for people who would rather not think about making money with their art. It's not just a book about business...it's a book about how to think about your art as a business, and then get on with making good art. If you are making a living with your creativity - or failing to make a living - this book is definitely for you!
