The Gift of AdministrationReview Date: 2006-01-12
This perceptive book recovers the concept that administration is one of God's spiritual gifts to the church - the gift through which ministry occurs. "Ministry," explain the authors, "occurs in and through administration. This is different from saying that administration serves ministry or that administrative insights may be used to manage ministry. Until the ordained clergy recognize that administration is a central locus of ministry and is itself ministry, there will be no central motivation, either for them or others within the community of believers, to exercise administratiove functions with sensitivity and joy." -- from book's back cover

Great Mystery Story.....Full of IntrigueReview Date: 2005-10-15
grade. I absolutely loved it. I recommend it for both boys and
girls. I re-read this story two or three time and recommended it to my daughter years later. I still had the book in my possession. Probably still do, somewhere. I just looked on
Amazon to see if this book was still in print. I am just ecstatic to find that it is still in print, and I am now going to order it for my 'quite literate-mature' ten year old grandson.
If it delivers fast enough, he will be able to read it and do a book report that is due on 'Mysteries!'

About the Book/ContentsReview Date: 2007-08-13
A fabulous compilation of life and times of Bengal 100 and more years ago. Over 115 histories and biographies with illustrations, make this journey into the past a very special one. This is the first representation of the most characteristic architectural and natural beauty of Bengal. Not just beautiful words, painted pictures, but actual photographs have been taken by the author himself. In the early nineteenth century this was a stupendous task of intellectual and physical labour. Thanks to this mammoth effort of A. Claude Campbell, we have available to us today an authentic, personally vouched and researched documentation of a very important era in the history of India.
Every spot described was personally visited by the author. Every Indian aristocrat mentioned in this compilation was actually visited and interviewed by the author, although it has to be mentioned that historical facts mentioned and stories related are as told to the author by the personages themselves and may leave much scope for argument.
Not only the well known historic buildings, archaeological remains, but coverage has been given to the less accessible parts of the country as well. Specially to the natural wonders, relics of by gone days.

"Once more, O Lord!"Review Date: 2002-05-24
This small quotation perfectly sums up this account of the Welsh Revival of 1904-05. Mains is assuming that if you have picked up this book you have done so because of your dissatisfaction with your spiritual life. I know that this is the reason I bought the book.
Writing to the Corinthian Church about Israel, Paul said that "these things were given to us for examples;" this is why Christians should read this book. Because it shows what the Spirit of G-d longs to do in His people.
Through each page I can feel the Holy Spirit searching my hear for all that does not please Him; at times I feel like the moth, which is both attracted to and repelled by the flame. Holiness has this effect on me.
This is a book that has to be experienced to be understood. Mains adjures the reader to "Proceed at your own risk," and rightfully so because how could any spiritually-minded person read what the Lord did during this revival and then go back to the stale walk you had with Him prior to reading this book. I can honestly say that this little book has put me mightily under conviction and, like King David said in the Psalms, "I shall be satisfied when I awake with Thy likeness."

A Reform Study for Practitioners, Policymakers and ResearchersReview Date: 2007-11-25
cities to identify those features that distinguish effective schools from others.
The study builds upon and advances the literature of school reform, identifying those common features of schools that enable all students to achieve.
The two cities in the study, one on the border with Mexico, the other a large
Northeastern city, are very different with respect to their populations, policy contexts and other elements.
The book provides a very detailed examination of schools in each city, and then identifies those features that contribute to better student results. Some, such as principal
leadership and focus reinforce earlier studies. Others, such as cultural continuity of staff with students, are not as well studied, and point to newer ground.
The study discusses the implications of its findings for researchers, policymakers, and school practitioners. Because of the differences between the cities, the
findings of common elements associated with high quality are sharply drawn and will be useful in influencing research and policy. The authors are detailed and delve into highly complex issues to highlight the common elements of good schools. The overall structure of the book is straightforward, clear and logical.
As someone who has worked in this field for many years and knows the authors, I think this study makes a valuable contribution to our understanding of how to help all young people succeed in school.

Cheat sheet for snowsports!Review Date: 2003-05-02
As a ski & snowboard instructor myself, I can confirm that this book includes all the concepts & movements that are critical to be a better skier and snowboarder.
The authors did a great job compiling all the concepts in such a compact, handy book. Each concept is first summarized in a sentence and then there are a brief paragraph and a picture associated to explain and visualize the concept. Don't get fooled by the size of the book because each movement might take you years of practice with good coaches to perfect it.
However, this is NOT a "how-to" book! It is best used as a refresher for what your instructors have taught you last season or this morning. Read the book once before your ski trips and review it again after each day of skiing.
Another positive aspect of the book is that it covers other snow toys, such as snow-bikes and snowblades, which are fun and gaining popularity in many resorts but no formal instruction is available.
Overall, this is an excellent handbook for anyone who enjoy snowsports, from beginners to experts, students to instructors.

But to get the job, Jimmy has to ask the favor of the head of the party, Ray Carrigan. Carrigan says he'll think about it, and while leaving Jimmy finds his mongrel dog, Alfie, having his way with Carrigan's purebred, Mistinguette, who is being walked by Carrigan's receptionist.
The next thing Jimmy knows, he gets an early morning telephone call from Carrigan telling him to come to an equestrian trail in Saganashkee Slough out in the suburbs. Goldie Hanrahan, Carrigan's long-time assistant, has just been found dead there. Jimmy is assigned to look out for Carrigan's undefined interests in the case.
Although he's only supposed to observe, Jimmy is soon off detecting. Goldie has been keeping a horse in a nearby stable for three years, but doesn't usually leave this early in the morning. And her famous golden bridge set (which is the source of her name) is missing. Did she swallow it when she died?
In the investigation, Jimmy learns that Goldie has been "friendly" with many of the Democratic movers and shakers . . . and had a child out of wedlock. Jimmy senses that the death is somehow related to the child, and tries to track the boy down.
Soon, he's single-handedly solved the case . . . which would have remained unsolved otherwise. The resolution of the mystery is a little tricky. Pay close attention to the descriptions of all the characters as you go. The first time I read this book years ago, I had to go back and reread quite a section until I understood how the plot worked. Hopefully, you will be more careful!
The most interesting part of this story is examining the consequences of adult choices. You will get a clear sense that Goldie's life could have been and ended much differently, as you discover who her main admirers were.
As you think about that, you should consider also what choices you have made that have improved and possibly worsened your life. What lessons can you draw from those experiences when you face important choices in the future? How can you pass along those lessons to those you love?
