This book was recommended by a Tour Director in Scotland when I visited the bridge from which James Stewart's body hung until his body fell piece by piece from it's chains. I had always found myself interested in why the Highlanders came down to fight for Bonnie Prince Charlie and where they found their courage. Even though this book takes place in the aftermath of Culloden, James Hunter explained to me the structure, loyalty, and fierceness of the clans through the life of James Stewart. It was insightful in a writing style that I could see within the hearts and minds of these people. The bravery of James Stewart and his senseless murder is a story that was well written, so that I was able to experience life in the times after Culloden. I would recommend this book to anyone who's asks "Why" and "Where did they find their courage". Thank You Ian for guiding me to this book!

A friend of mine recommended this book to me, otherwise I probably would have never picked it up because the cover isn't appealing to me. But I'm really glad I read it. The author gives numerous specific medications and their dangers.
I was stunned to read about tagamet, a prescription drug that is used for ulcers and other stomach problems. I personally took it for about a year when I was facing some personal difficulties which caused me to have a very delicate stomach. He tells the story of a man who was taking it that had permanent health problems from the side effects. Apparently, tagamet prevents the body from excreting or removing some toxins. The man in the story became poisoned after mowing his lawn by the chemicals that had been applied to his grass. The story was even reported in the Wall Street Journal, but when you look at the side effects in the PDR for tagamet, all it says is: breasts may develop in men, and headaches.
Anyone who is interested in natural health should have this book in their collection.

I adore the Divine Comedy-- and all of the Modern Library translations of the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. I tried out these books by Sandow Birk and Marcus Sanders because they looked appealing. They're definitely great reads. No, they're not perfect, and some of it is a little strange to read, but overall, I think you can't really go wrong in trying them out. It keeps all of Dante's main points, it just presents them in a different, more modern way. Anyone interested in Dante's work, would should at least read these for experimentation.

A rare look at Islay life at a crucial historical

For the millions of descendants of those erstwhile Islay citizens who left those shores for "new worlds" Freda Ramsay's edition of this diary is a strongly framed portrait of the currents of daily life on this speck of land which was once the seat of the Lords of the Isles and a major crossroads of Western Europe.
For the neophyte historian or searcher for genological roots, the daybook's entries will regularly pose questions which should send the reader scurrying to other resource material. For those better versed in island history of this period, this Day Book provides a reliable view of community affairs on Islay and similarly on other nearby islands.
The few stateside copies of this book are crumbling so it is tragic that the Aberdeen University press is not keeping it in circulation. Send them an e mail to encourage reprinting. END

The single-best Cthulhu/Lovecraft anthology in a long time

Dead but Dreaming is the finest Lovecraftian/Cthulhu Mythos anthology to see print in a very, very long time (in a strange aeon, if I may...!). Writing in this often-muddled genre gets no better than this. You won't find a lot of "names" herein, but don't let that stop you from buying and reading this amazing tome. Editor Ross set out to collect stories that paid homage to Lovecraft without being trite slaves to his style. This IS, indeed, a collection of Lovecraftian horror, NOT a jumble of pastiches and old-formula Cthulhu Mythos tales. No, this is fresh and enjoyable, with more than a few surprises in store for the reader. Of the fifteen tales presented, there were but a few that didn't "grab" me, and only one that I can actually say I disliked. The majority here are keepers, for sure. As an author, editor, and small press publisher, myself, I have to admit to jealousy on my part: I wish I had been responsible for this book! If you are a fan of H.P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu Mythos treat yoruself to something very special and buy this book!

Did you know that, in Hitler's Europe, deaf women were considered on the same level of social undesirable as gypsies and Jews? One of the many interesting aspects of DEAF WOMAN OF CANADA is that you'll pick up many fascinating tidbits just by pursuing any one of the more than 300 stories told by the three authors of this book. The book is told with a sprightly touch, perhaps this is the contribution of Angela Stratiy, a well known comedian?
Some of the women portrayed have had pretty much minimal contact with Canada, and some have left the country to better their station and perhaps to get a glimpse of the "deaf utopia" which many deaf people believe lies ahead. Still, despite these reservations, you will enjoy reading this pageant of brave women and you may be tempted to reach out to the deaf ones in your life and try to give them copies of this groundbreaking book. Even if Amazon says it's out of print, you might try, I did and got a copy in the mail straightaway.

This book ranks right up there with Dear Zoo. My 19 month old toddler has enjoyed this for several months. Simple and durable. Note that since Rod Campbell is now located in Europe, his books take about 4-6 weeks to arrive...but they are all well worth the wait. Just be sure to order them separate from any items you may want right away.
