I purchased this book to accompanying the book my high school classes are currently reading, "Warriors Don't Cry." As a high school teacher, I realize that students are likely to more fully engage with a novel when they feel they can truly relate to the story and when they are able to imagine all that is happening. "A Life is More Than a Moment" makes this possible! As we read the novel, I share pictures from this text with my students. They love this book. Often they ask to read this book even on their own, excitedly reporting their newfound knowledge with their classmates. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who is intersted in seeing the real thing.

This book is a thoughtful summary of the events of the 1957 Central High Crisis, especially for those who don't have the time or inclination to delve into the details but want to know all about the history behind the crisis and the events at that time. What makes the book even more interesting is that the authors take you inside Central High School forty years later so that the reader can see the life and times of a academically successful and fully integrated CHS today. Of course, one of the greatest contributions are the photographs by the late Will Counts -- awarding winning photography that carries you back in time. I highly recommend the book for students over age 12 and anyone who desires an accurate account of this shameful yet historic civil rights event.

Little Rock was the first time since reconstruction that federal troops had been mobilized top protect Blacks seeking to exercise the rights they allegedly won in the aftermath of the Civil War. The terror, hatred, and brutality of the times is searingly captured by the iconic photo which gives the book its title--of a young white student screaming, her face contorted, at an equally young black girl. Equally appalling is the other major picture which forms the center of this work--a series showing the mob attacking a black reporter, and beating him with no one willing to intervene.

While the book would be worthwhile for the pictures alone, it is all the more compelling by bringing the story up to date. Centered around the fortieth anniversary of desegregation of Little Rock High School, the author tracks down both the black student and the white student spewing hatred. There are pictures of them together, having gone through a process of healing and reconciliation.

The ultimate question--why such hatred--is not answered, nor could it be, given the format and limitations of what is, af4er all, basically a book of narrated pictures. But the question is certainly raised and explored.

This is a great book and should be on the shelf of anyone who loves photography or wants to understand why the Civil rights movement was so important to the history of this country (although I would strongly urge that no one take the advice f the other reviewer, and use this as the primary source for information on this struggle).

My only criticism is that the upbeat tone of this volume needs to be questioned. As James Meridith has said--If a black man can be kicked ten times in open view, and has no redress, is it really "improvement" if he is only kicked nine times, but still has no redress? Is Little Rock really free of prejudice and discrimination? Is America?

Without question this is a wonderful book that addresses many of our personal, human problems, including how to deal and cope with them. This book is not just about sleep but about living a meaningful life. If you want a quick fix or magic bullet for sleep difficulties, look elsewhere. But if you want to examine your heart, mind, and even your soul, then you will find, like I did by following the suggestions given in the book, that "Live Well, Sleep Well" is an excellent guide to a sense of peace and tranquility. It's not entirely about the number of hours we sleep, but the quality of our sleep.

Highly Informative and Helpful

Live Well is a highly informative book and very "user friendly." It's not only about getting quality sleep, but about the quality of life, and how balanced living improves our lives. It's well worth your time and attention.

A BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ!

Ostensibly, Live Well, Sleep Well is about getting a good night's sleep, but it turns out to be much more. It truly is a "fully holstic" treatment of the subject of living well. The author's words will convince you more than any review like this one, so see for yourself and read the book. Also, note that here is a book by a true writer who is more than just an "author," which is evident from the quality of the writing.

Contemporary urban life is hallmarked by chronic and habitually insufficient and inadequate sleep for millions of people. In Live Well, Sleep Well: The Holistic Way To A Good Night's Sleep, Dan Campbell addresses this epidemic health problem by surveying modern sleep research in conjunction with the information on sleep in the Edgar Cayce readings. Campbell reveals why we need sleep, what happens when sleep suffers, and how to improve sleep through a blend of modern medicine and the spiritual/health advice to be found in the Cayce readings. Practical, in-depth, meaningful, insightful, and "user friendly", Live Well, Sleep Well is very highly recommended reading for the non-specialist general reader seeking to directly address a need for an improved and more refreshing sleep.

I enjoyed this book, which is saying a lot because I don't particularly enjoy the genre this book is placed in (LDS romance). I thought Nancy Allen did a great job balancing her research and the fiction aspects in this story. It didn't have the typical cheesy lines (that most LDS fiction tends to over flow with) and I appreciate that.

Greg and Jill McKenzie, owners of McKenzie Investigations, feel obligated to help when Colonel Warren Jarvis asks them to take on the case of his good friend Kelli Kane. Kelli needs the McKenzies to help clear the name of her great-great-grandfather Sydney Liggett. Back in 1914 he was accused of embezzling funds from Marathon Motor Works.

Pierce Bradley, a construction supervisor at the former Marathon Motors building, found papers belonging to Sydney Liggett which would have exonerated him, but he disappeared before the papers could be turned over to the DA. Bradley called Kelli's grandfather and set up a meeting to hand over the papers. Unfortunately Bradley can't be located now.

Not long after the McKenzies being to investigate, Bradley's body is found submerged in a lake. The papers he claimed he found are still missing. To make matters worse, more people connected to the investigate end up dead. There aren't many clues to go on, but the McKenzies are committed to do everything they can to find those papers. Can they find them before more people die? Can they find them without putting themselves in danger?

I love this series. Jill and Greg are such lovable characters. The plot is well constructed, and the setting is terrific. Such a great cozy mystery series. The author has done a fabulous job of setting up the story and creating characters that are believable. I enjoyed learning about the Marathon cars as well.

I highly recommend this book and series. I found myself having trouble putting it down.

Greg McKenzie, retired Lieutenant Colonel where he was an agent with the OSI [Office of Special Investigations], is contacted by a former colleague from the Air Force and asked to investigate a matter for his girlfriend, one Kelli Kane. Greg and his wife, Jill, live in Nashville, TN, where they opened a p.i. agency about seventh months ago. Kelli herself has a background that includes working undercover for some Federal Agency, whether CIA or otherwise is unclear. It seems that her great-great-grandfather had been accused of embezzlement when a large sum of money went missing from the company for which he worked as assistant treasurer, Marathon Motor Works, ultimately resulting in its declaring bankruptcy. Her grandfather, now 84 and in a nursing home, has been contacted by the job foreman for a company renovating the building which had housed that company ninety years ago, telling him that some papers had been found, hidden in a wall, attached to which was a handwritten note indicating that the papers were to be turned over to the District Attorney's office. The job foreman, a man named Bradley, was to have brought the papers to Kelli's grandfather, but never kept his appointment. Greg and his wife are asked to find Bradley and the papers which they believe will exonerate her relative and clear the family name.

It is not long before Bradley's body is found, and his house is discovered to have been ransacked, as is Kelli's grandfather's house. And of course the papers that might solve the mystery of the missing money are nowhere to be found. Complicating matters is the fact that as the investigation progresses it appears that the old man had a propensity for alienating a wide range of people, as had Bradley himself, and his being targeted may have had nothing to do with the Marathon investigation, but simply a matter of vandalism. But then another body is discovered.

Marathon Motor Works was a real company, and in fact it produced the only car completely built in the South. Nashville and its environs are lovingly described by the author, who has given us a very good mystery, well-written and suspenseful, and one I enjoyed a great deal.

When Colonel Warren Jarvis asks Greg and Jill McKenzie, owners of McKenzie Investigations, to take on the case of his good friend Kelli Kane, they readily agree. Jarvis was instrumental in one of their former cases and the McKenzies feel indebted to him. Kelli needs the McKenzies' help in clearing the name of her great-great-grandfather Sydney Liggett, accused of embezzling funds from Marathon Motor Works in 1914. Kelli's grandfather recently received a phone call from Pierce Bradley, a construction supervisor at the former Marathon Motors building, who found papers belonging to Sydney Liggett which would have exonerated Liggett had he not disappeared before he could turn them over to the DA. And now Bradley is nowhere to be found. The McKenzies have barely begun their investigation when Bradley's body is discovered submerged in a lake, but the papers he claimed to have come across are missing. The McKenzies hope to recover the papers, but nothing seems to jell and, to make matters worse, people connected to the investigation are ending up dead. The only clue: a Russian cigarette stub found at each crime scene.

This fourth installment of the Greg McKenzie Mysteries is proof positive the series remains strong and fresh and is a major contender in the mystery venue. Greg and Jill McKenzie are a nice pairing, an amiable blend against the shady backdrop of murder and deceit. This well-plotted cozy is sure to please its fans and lure even more into its fold, the not-so-easily-guessed mystery one readers will enjoy trying to solve.

My father was a member of Co K. Unfortunately, the writers could find him at the time the book was published because he passed away in 1970.

For anyone who no longer has their loved one with them (from Co K), this is a great book to discover what they experienced as a Rifleman in the Army. I had only my father's discharge papers to tell me what he did and his job was listed as simply "Rifleman". Since the records from this time period are lost (in a fire, I believe) there are only personal accounts of what happened. Thank you to the authors for bringing my father's experiences to life.

I can not begin to express to you how much this book means to me. My grandfather was Clarence Jarvis. He was one of the men in Company K. We really never knew anything about his death. He died when my father was only an infant. To the writers of this book I say Thank You !! The personnal touches brought my grandfather into our lives some 50 years later. I only wish more history books were written this way.

It is almost tragic that this excellent, personal, detailed and brutally honest, heroic and even quietly poetic memoir has fallen out of print. This, perhaps one of the finest histories ever written about WWII, tells the story of the front line soldier from the first person.

Long before Saving Private Ryan inspired Tom Brokaw and the rest to capitalize on the rightfully named "Greatest Generation", Cambell and Leinbaugh's book captured the harrowing narrative of combat that so many men of that era are sadly taking to the grave with them. This book personlizes the story in a voice that appears to have been culled from a combat veteran reunion. The Men of Company K willingly recountsthe horror of battle as a permanent record. A warning really as to what freedom ultimately costs. May we be damned should we ever forget.

As a historical document, it boils in as much action and tension as any Clancy novel.

Ambrose frequently has used The Men of Company K as a carefully cited reference in his longer works. This alone may be a testament to its greatest. Please search this fine work out.

This is a moving account of the combat experience of one rifle company as told by the commanders. What makes this book so special is all the personal recollections that are compiled. The men of company K get their first battle after D Day in Holland. They continue east through the battle of the bulge, the crossing of the Rhine, and occupation duty in the conquered Germany. The little personal touches are on every page. One man defines REMFS as "any sob behind my foxhole." A future mathematics professor uses geometry and a map to plot a German rocket launching site. The description of their Christmas Eve 1944 battle in the bulge, and how a Belgium village renamed their main street to honor this battle brings goosebumps to my arms as I recall it. One man blinded in this battle by tank gun fire was happy to know that his dreadful wound was his Christmas gift of survival and evacuation to the rear. Others recall the blinded soldier crawling over them to the rear without a guide and wishing them all "Merry Christmas" as he groped his way to the medics miles behind the battle. It was a battle in which company K fixed and held a numerically superior armored force with only rifles and grenades. In one captured German city with still working phones, a German speaking GI got a call through to German Army HQ in Berlin to tell them to "expect company K in about two weeks." This book is full of personal accounts of horror and humor, terror and triumph. This book evokes visualization by the reader like no other account of infantry combat in Europe. I only wish that the publisher would put it back in print! It should be required reading for high school U.S. History classes. Not because it is a historical text, but rather for the personal context it gives to such a critical point in history.

This is THE actual Book of Irish Mythology
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-21
Gods and Fighting Men is an excellent resource because it preserves the lore from the Book of Invasions as well as other sources -- the legends of the earliest inhabitants of Ireland, the coming of the Tuatha De Danaan (The People of Dana) and the stories of Finn MacCumhail.

What is portrayed as "Early Irish Mythology" 99% of the time actually isn't -- the dozens of translations of The Tain, albeit worthy reading, are actually the lore of Ulster, a single Irish province. This makes it Ulster Mythology (regional) more than Irish Mythology (national).

The legends of the Tuatha De Danaan are essential for a comprehensive understanding of Irish mythology, actually comprising the majority of the Mythological Cycle, and deal with the initial settling of all of Ireland.

Unfortunately, it seems to be modern New Age reconstructions of the Mythological Cycle rather than the native stories that seem to be infusing themselves into the mainstream, and that is sad.

In my mind, the Mythological Cycle is the most important cycle in Irish mythology, because it sets up the scenario for all that is to follow. The Fenian Cycle (legends of Finn MacCumhail and his warband) are fascinating not only for their strong associations with Nature, but also for the fact that the stories are well-known both in Ireland and in the Scottish Highlands. The Gods still walked and resided on (or in) the Earth and interacted often with mortals. Magic was all around.

The Tain, on the other hand, is more a time of towns and forts and war-chariots; a time when magic was less present and people were less intertwined with Nature than in the Golden Age. The Gods had already departed our realm and only made brief cameos in the stories.

In summary, Gods and Fighting Men is the actual collection of Irish Mythology from the earliest legends. It affects all of Ireland and the stories are fairly widespread throughout the Gaelic world. Lady Gregory wrote these translations with a view to retain the native Irish sense of story-telling; this she achieved remarkably well.

My one concern is that it would have been nice for Lady Gregory to have cited her sources for each story. I know that in many cases she blended versions from several sources to produce what she saw as the purest form of the story, but a simple listing of these would have been fantastic from an academic standpoint.

Overall this is probably the greatest collection of Irish Mythology I have found so far, albeit Lady Gregory's focus was primarily as storyteller rather than academic (this is not a bad thing -- dry, stale translations of Irish lore would have been extremely anti-Irish in themselves).

This should probably be the FIRST book one reads of Irish Mythology. I highly recommend this book and the fact that it is value-priced definitely doesn't hurt, either. This book is definitely worth several times its cost.

Happy Reading!

A good read, but remember the stylistic differences.....

Lady Gregory faithfully renders old Irish stories into a form that we clods that only speak English can understand. She does not, however, make them more prosaic, or fix them into what we normally find as our story format! They are true to the original structures of the genre, and are much more lively and fun for that. My wife places them firmly in the nature of Irish legend, which she calls "We went over there and stole their cow!" (Tain Bo Cuailnge is basically a story of a cow theft, and is one of the most famous stories of Irish legend). I love the split style, and it does give the reader a good understanding of the way stories were related in the old days. A must for those who want to know where some of the ancient Irish names derive!

This book is great for those with no knowledge of how dogs work. Campbell does a great job in explaining what is motivating the behavior of dogs and how to modify that behavior in simple and humane ways. I have a previous general knowledge of animal behavior - and I found the tips, tricks and methods suggested in this book were intuitive and useful. I saw adjustment in my dog's behavior after a few days. The trick with smart dogs is to get your friends to treat the dog in a manner that will assist your training process so they will generalize what they have learned (which is the problem my husband and I are having). A cute smart dog can be a real challenge! I highly suggest getting this book if you have a dog - even if you think you know everything, it's a great read.

Just finished reading the book ... didn't take long because it's well written, entertaining and organised ... The book flows from chapter to chapter, topic to topic with nary a hitch.

The author explains how a dog thinks! ... How a dog senses & relates to the world and it's human' pack ... Most important, the author explains how a dog learns ...

Campbell's training methods are both humane and effective ... Before we can train our dogs, we have to first train ourselves, to be more understanding, to be more flexible and tolerant ...

He emphasises an uncomfortable truth ... that there are few problem dogs, and far more problem owners! His chapter on "How People & the Environment create Behaviour Problems" made my ears go red with embarrassment ...*laughs* ...

The book deals with and offers practical solutions to almost every difficult situation a dog owner is likely to encounter ... Reading this book cannot but help me become a better trainer and friend to our Beagle and Labrador ...

Indeed, dogs are amazing animals ... they don't choose us, we choose them ... and the least we can do is try and learn to understand them ... and this book will help me do that ... its gonna be an interesting if not amazing journey ...

A wonderful book ...

PS ... Campbell recommends Idris Shah's 'The Sufis' as helpful reading ... and he is absolutely correct ...

This is another book of those wonderful ones which deal with dog
problems and reach solutions, suitable for experts and beginners. Tens
of funny (but truly meaningful) illustrations show you how your dog
translates your behavior. That's how I saw them, humorous but
true. The book covers all phases of the development of the dog, from
the day you will bring it at home, to the day you will have the
perfect dog. One phrase I made banner from this book, what I was
always supporting: "I won't tell you that dogs are 'denning'
animals, so crate training your dog is 'natural'. That's not the
truth. The only denning dog or wolf is a pregnant [one,] and when she
and the pups leave their dens, they are plainly joyful to be out of
it!" People, please keep this in mind when you read in other
books about crates for your puppy.

The book begins with firstly
understanding your dog and their behavior, and how do they think,
their natural reactions and how they learn. Aggressive behavior, how
do dogs sense their world (vision, smell, hearing, taste, touch, pain
and so forth) How they communicate, their social development from life
in the litter to the day they join a human family. In chapter six, it
deals with puppy stuff, includes a puppy behavior test, from making
your selection to the arrival at home, house training and socializing.
Puppy training includes the basic: name recognition, commands like
come, sit, stay.

The second part of the book analyzes what causes a
dog to misbehave with first the human element (I liked this one. We
confuse our little friends and then wonder why do they misbehave!!)
How health and nutrition affect the dog; here a troubleshooting is
included: physical problem - associated behavior problems. What
follows this chapter is analyzing and treating the cause of the
problem, and techniques to avoid like electrical shock devices, cages
(dogs are not birds!)

In part three the author shows how to correct
behavior problems like aggression toward owners, how to introduce
babies and new pets to the established dog, barking and how to correct
it even when you are not at home. Other behavior problems and their
solutions include car sickness, car chasing, chewing, coprophagia,
digging, escaping, fearfulness, fighting with other dogs, jumping on
people, old age problems, over protectiveness and much much more.
When I finished the book I couldn't think of any dog problem which was
not included. In fact I even read about things I never encountered
before. With humane solutions and love, the author managed to write a
perfect book which guarantees ever lasting solutions. It is perhaps
the most wonderful book I read about dog behavior and how to solve the
problems. A big thanks to Mr. Campbell

Unexpected Page Turner--Timeless

I am impressed with The New York Review's revival of this unexpectedly non-Jamesian title. A truly unique James choice to bring back to life--it's been done so with a cover so compelling (I'm not a tradional James fan) I opened the book which I found locally in a brick and mortar as they are now called, book shop. The internet cannot do justice to the thoughtful sophistication of this book's packaging. (But I can purchase another copy here more easily!) The publisher's comments about the work were also compelling and complimentary to the cover art. The Other House is a mystery, a detective story, a love triangle with more than three angles--a true page turner--with a timelessly human plot and "modern" characters. Anyone thriller fan would be enchanted with it. And turning every page, holding the book, is a sensory thrill. Paper, writing, art--all representative of what any literary rebirth deserves. If it's worth bringing back--do it with quality, I say! They did--along with a whole marvelous collection of equally intriguing books, with well written new introductions. Good choices--the pieces themselves, the introduction authors and the book artist designers. Truly timeless in all ways!

real, rounded characters

This book is a novelization of the play by the same name. And you can see the stageplay - the characters are continually coming and going - and there's stage business - all of which I think shows some stiffness - yet about half way through the novel I was startled at how much the characters were real, rounded - I could just about see them - they ached with life - I was always aware of the stage during the novel - the story itself is rather shocking - it's a mystery novel! - it's all very well done - it's short - and it's very psychological

A trusted friend sent me a copy of this new edition of The Other House, insisting that I'd enjoy it. It looked intriguing. I felt obligated to at least give it a try. I still trust the friend! I can't believe this is what is known as a Classic. I thought they were all very boring. I couldn't wait to get back to this plot and I'd never have thought it was written in the uptight Victorian era. It's more like a movie special of the week or one of the top ten best selling novels. Read it then recommend it and impress your friends with your literary depth.

A surprisingly quick read

It's hard to believe that James's theatrical turn of the late 19th century ended with his audience "booing" him off the stage. This novelized play reads quickly and delightfully. I've read more than twenty of his novels, and this was the quickest of them all.

The plot is simple enough (at least for James): two houses, apparently back to back, in Wilverley, a small English village, set the scene. One contains a widow, the other a young married couple. The young wife widows the young husband, and he becomes Wilverley's "most eligible bachelor," except for the fact that he promised his dying wife that he would never marry again, at least not during the life of his child. So somebody has to kill the child, right?

Enter James's genius for character. There's Paul, the huge, infinitely imperturbable son of the wealthy Mrs. Beever; the diminutive and impetuous Dennis Vidal; Tony Bream himself, a remarkably good-natured but insensitive fool; and the powerful Mrs. Beever, whose awful determination cows every one else before her. Like James's best writing, his characters become interesting on their own; his fictions become an opportunity to satisfy curiosity. I think that's what makes this book a "page-turner"; the characters are interesting enough that I want to know what's going to happen.

In the end, I suppose, what makes this book succeed is what would have made the dramatic version fail: James's endless fascination with the workings of the human mind must have become either painfully boring or just incomprehensible to a theatrical audience. However it came about, I recommend it unequivocally.

A Beautiful Vision for Mothering

I recently gave this book to a new mother, who threw it away. I couldn't understand why- because it encouraged and inspired me. I realized she felt overwhelmed by it, as if she didn't measure up, and also felt some of Nancy's views to be "extreme".

This book is not a measuring stick to tell you if you fall short- it's a mountain-top view of all the implications of your role as a mother, inspiring you to take your mothering more seriously and more excitedly. It is a visionary book by a visionary woman- helping paint a beautiful and often counter-cultural picture of all your motherhood can be, through grace.

Some of Nancy's views on things like family planning and breastfeeding may seem extreme, but perhaps this is only because we let our culture set the norm. Consider whether this would have seemed extreme 100 or 1000 years ago, or when God created the world. We might become more well-rounded mothers to consider the history, traditions, and beliefs of mothering over the ages.

I encourage all readers to live in accordance with the measure of faith God has given to them personally. To follow someone else's ideas without being at peace that God has called you to live "their way" is self-imposed legalism. Nancy is not trying to create a standard for motherhood that everyone must follow. She is just trying to inspire us with all the possibilities of how important and magnificent our roles as moms can be, and to confirm the Bible's support of motherhood as a role to be embraced and cherished. I think she did an excellent job. Whenever I put this book down, I want to run to my toddler and hug him!

I strongly encourage you to let this book encourage you.

[...].

This book has changed my view of mothering. Nancy made me realize that the way I mother will not only affect my children, but my grandchildren, and my great-grandchildren!

This book provides motivation and suggestions. One thing I try to say each morning now is "I love being your mommy!" (or "I'm so glad you are my son!") and then I'll describe what we are going to do today and how much fun we'll have.

Nancy Campbell has a variety of other books, workbooks, tapes, and a DVD for further motivation and suggestions. There is also a magazine you can subscribe to written by her, her daughters, and many readers (no ads!). My one-year old is always so calm when I play a Nancy tape or DVD - Nancy has a really soothing voice. I am much happier when I follow her advice!

I also greatly enjoyed her daughter's (Evangeline Johnson) tape on "Freedom Mothering." There are many articles on the website as well.

I would highly recommend this manual / workbook. It is very well written and researched.

Nancy Campbell has a wonderful insight on how God looks at mothers and what His will is for them. She uses Scripture to back up each and every issue that a mother could come across, from birth control to disciplin.

I absolutely love this book. It is so very encouraging and loving. It brings sanity to my very crazy life!!

Thank you Nancy!
