Here is a valuable tip if you are wondering whether to buy the hardcover or paperback version. The paperback is in a reduced format and the 34 color plates in the hardcover are rendered in black and white. Since this IS a book that deals with images, it would seem preferable to choose the hardcover. The text IS the same as the hardcover.

Let's say you don't want to sit down and read Hero w/ a Thousand Faces, or any other Joseph Campbell works that are very long and more text-based. Perhaps, though, you know a little about the man, and want to learn a little more about what he thinks of things. This is the book that you're looking for, then. It's an incredibly lovingly written study of mythological / religious symbology through most places & times in the history of our little blue rock. With about 500 illustrations, I believe, it makes just as proper a coffee table book as it does a reference source. What's wonderful is that it doesn't take a look at cultures one by one, and examine their belief systems, each in turn--it examines the symbols themselves, instead, and then focuses on the commonalities in the world's living and lost theological systems that have grown out of these archetypal symbols. And like I said, maybe you don't want to read 5 or 6 volumes of scholarly literature just to get at the parts that speak to you. So you start with this book, you see what's what, and THEN you dive in a little deeper from there. Quite possibly the non-fiction book I will keep with me for the rest of my life. Get it for yourself.

One of the last projects he worked on, this beautifully illustrated book puts together Campbell's views on myth as manafested through art. This could be his very best achievement as a "comparative mythologist." Organized around the theam of the world-as-dream (from Hinduism to *Finnagan's Wake*), it discusses several universal motifs in art/myth (the virgin birth, the world axis, the death and resurection of the hero...) and gives Campbell's explainatons for for their commonality. Manny of the artworks discussed in his audio tape lectures are shown and analyzed here. I am an art educator, and I've found that I can build almost my whole (multicultural) curiculum around this book.

I bought this book for my 3-1/2 year old daughter. She absolutely adores this book. I have read it over and over and she just can't get enough! Some books you dread reading over and over, but this one I don't -- I actually enjoy reading it! I like it because it addresses many different issues, from every day fears to dealing with change, to friendship -- all issues that we deal with on a daily basis. I would highly recommend this book, it was awesome!

Although my 3 year old loves the pictures and the characters in Bubba and Trixie, I know someday she will understand the meaning behind this wonderful story. I loved the story for it's message of being happy with yourself no matter what you look like or your abilities. An excellent story for those dealing with issues about self esteem.

A good story nicely illustrated

Bubba, the caterpillar, fears change. Trixie, a ladybug who can't fly befriends Bubba and helps him become less fearful. Bubba takes Trixie flying after his transformation into a butterfly. The story encapsulates how friends help each other, and learn to feel good about themselves in the process.

This account of the South African healers is as accurate as you can get! Susan was "chosen" by the traditional healers to share their story with the world and she has done an incredible job. Her interviews and personal stories of Africa make the reader feel like they are in Africa experiencing the adventures with Susan.

The African healers are gifted shamans who serve both rural and city people, working in partnership with Western-trained doctors. I trained with PH Mntshali in Swaziland and met Maseko and others. They all speak highly of Susan and are very proud her. This is a must read!

An amazing trip into African Spirituality.

If you're fortunate enough to read this book, you'll begin to know the author. Her writing style is easy to read because it is so much like her. I read this book in it's first printing from South Africa some years after visiting the author and her family. I was able to visit a healer featured in this book and have a greater appreciation for a healer's art now that I understand more of their journey.

If ever you wondered what the life of a traditional healer REALLY is like, this book will surely give you a looking-glass to see through. The author has an impecible ability to "draw" the reader into learning about sacred ceremonies and traditional healing practices that few westerners would ever have a remote idea of, let alone the close and up-front personal encounters that are made available through these pages. Containing about a dozen or so personal stories of highly gifted healers who were "plucked" out of ordinary lives and pushed by the forces that guided them into being traditional healers, this book presents the reader with incredible real-life stories of being "called to heal."

Definately a one-sitting read, this book has a spirit of its own and truly cannot be put down once it is picked up. The author has an almost hypnotic ability to keep you reading through her highly entertaining story-telling style that makes you feel as though you're sitting 'round the campfire listening to old stories, wishing for "just one more." Not only are the healers' stories sometimes astonishing, but the amazing tale of how this author came to obtain these stories, plus the incredibly realistic view into the world of traditional African healing, is truly worth the read. In the end, one is left to ponder the gifts Africa has been holding for the rest of the world, as ancient tradition is brought to life through this modern glimpse into long held beliefs and practices.

Being a person myself who went through a drastic life change to answer a call right here in modern American life, the stories of these healers gave me an incredible reassurance that my path was not farfetched, while also revealing to me a deep inner connection to a world little known, and far away in Africa. This book was a confirmation that told me, answering a calling is an ancient practice that our souls have known long before the modern world existed.

Not only will this book change you, but surely it will effect the way you see "the call" in your own life. It is a must read, for sure!

This has been the greatest book for me. I am a college student, and I use this book all the time to make food for my roommates. They totally love it and think I'm a great cook, when actually I haven't had that much experience. I usually make mistakes in my cooking, but this seems to be fool-proof! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants genuine good cooking the quick and easy way.

Now, my family ALWAYS wants me to cook, and brags about how good I am! Little do they know, that I have this secret cookbook! All of the recipes are very "homemade" tasting! It has appetizers, classic recipes, tex-mex, everything! I highly recommend it, any dish I've made out of it, has been quick, easy, and a crowd favorite!

I am such a fan of the Campbell's Cookbooks. All of the recipes include easy-to-find ingredients (most ingredients are regulars in most households anyway) and are fast to cook. I am a calorie-counter, and while many recipes are not light, they are easily lightened using the "Reduced Fat" or "Healthy Request" versions of the products in the recipes.

My single favorite recipe is the one for Garlic Shrimp Pasta - it's amazing that a recipe that starts with Campbell's soup can almost seem like a gourmet meal. Many recipes that you may already clip from the back of soup cans can be found in one neat and organized place here.

I highly recommend this book - especially if you are looking for dinner in a flash!

Yep it is time for me to be exposed to culture so I thought I would go see a classic (Troy "Brad Pitt".) but first I need o know a little about the story and the Author. So I turned to my trusty reference, "The Classics Reclassified" by Richard Armour.
My copy must have been written about the time of Homer as it has no ISBN number.

This volume helps one understand the classics in a way they can be appreciated. It is refreshing to read a book by someone that had made the learning experience so palatable. (No I did not eat the book.)

Richard Armour starts out with a succinct and to the point biography of the classic writer. He makes clear what other books only imply. After this he follows up with the classic it's self.
The contents:

Homer
The Iliad "From the original Greek, Whoever he was"

William Shakespeare
Julius Caesar "et tu, William"

Sir Walter Scott
Ivanhoe "upright knights, tilting and toppling"

Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Scarlet Letter "an A for effort"

Herman Melville
Moby Dick "strong men cry and whales blubber"

George Eliot
Silas Marner "a moral with a tale"

Charles Dickens
David Copperfield "or up from poverty"

The book also contains sketches at relevant or irreverent intervals.

This is a wonderful volume of literary humor that really should be back in print. Going through famous fictional works (including yet another Shakespeare), Armour goes through the work of fiction and, taking things to an illogical extreme, presents a very funny take on these classics. This book is hilarious, particularly, of course, if you've read the original work in question.

Forget the hype about Bolognia, this is the best book on clinical dermatology out there today. Written by three of the top clinical dermatologists in the country, there is a unity of writing and approach and and a consistent high quality level that you don't get with texts with hundreds of co-authors (many of whom are in training themselves). There is also a refreshing aspect that this book is written for practicing dermatologists and avoids much of the incomprehensibility of so-called academic dermatology texts. Andrews is much improved over the last edition with color photos and the input from Dirk Elston, one of the most prolific dermatogists in the country. This is the one book EVERY dermatologist should have on his desk.

one of the best dermo books i've read but.... a little gap: the work lacking a chapter concerning burn care. i think this items it's very important for a modern dermatology.
so, I regret to give only 4 stars, taking in account that the chapters of the book are concise, well done, showing the best practical approach, in comparison to other dermo text bks.

This is a must have for all dermatologists. This book is small in size, but massive in content. I have always said, "If it ain't in Andrews', it ain't worth knowing." and this is still true of this version. This edition has great color pictures (although I always thought that the B&W photos in the previous editions were so terrific that you could still "see" the color in them.). This is another book that you really shouldn't be without whether you are a resident or practicing dermatologist.

This is a must have book for non-dermatologists and dermatologists alike. This text has replaced Habif as the traditional textbook for non-dermatologists, because of its concise straightforward approach to dermatology, making it easily understood by the non-dermatologist. For the dermatologist, it is simple to read, but not lacking in depth, such that it can serve as the main textbook for refreshing the information learned during residency without getting bogged down with useless minutia. I use this as the textbook of choice on a daily basis.

I also have to sons that have enjoyed the story line and the messages that the story contains. The illustrations are colorful and add life to the books content. I have given more copies of Crow and Weasel away than any other book in recent years. It is the most beautiful portrait of male friendship available in any genre for children or adults. I most often give copies to young men facing some important transition in their own lives...graduation from high school or college when they too will be asked to go beyond what is familiar, and in doing so, will learn more about themselves. This is a story to share with those you love again and again. As Lopez says, "If stories come to you, care for them. And learn to give them away where they are needed..." This is just such a story.

...and a crow, and many other insightful characters within "Crow and Weasel" have stayed with me since I first read it almost 10 years ago. The story itself is vibrant, almost to the point of actual narrative. Beautiful landscapes and dialogue throughout lend themselves to the imagination; I feel very much a part of what I'm reading-a true escape. And I like that it teaches me by surprise. Everytime I finish this book, I find that my joy in diversity, my desire to be kind, and my reverence for the natural world have grown. Tom Pohrt's illustrations are each works of art, and complement the story perfectly. I wish they were available as prints. Share this book with the young, and then go share it with everybody else.

This is exactly what I had hoped for. Small footprint, plenty of capacity, no external power requirement and simple plug & play compatability for both XP and Vista.

I use this unit 3 different ways:
1.) As a backup device for a laptop running XP and a desktop running Vista
-- It's simple and very quick. I actually now backup my 2 computers now on a weekly basis. Prior to this I did it once a year if I thought about it!
-- Plus I keep this unit in my backpack which helps reduce the risk of losing everything if there were a fire/tornado or similar disaster.
2.) File transfer mechanism when the files are bigger than a USB memory stick holds
-- I don't always have a shared network I can use between computers so this is the next best thing.
3.) For programs I don't use on a regular basis at work. This would be demo stuff and large applications that I only use on a very infrequent basis.
-- This keeps my laptop hard drive free from some very large installs.

I also taught a class to homeschoolers using THE WAY LIFE WORKS (much cheaper) as the main text, but using many of the CD-ROM activites from ESSENTIAL BIOLOGY as class material. I especially liked the MendAliens for genetics problems! There are many useful activites, quizzes, and chapter tests, wonderful graphics. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand "essential" biology.

I was very happy to have gotten a copy of this from T while I was up visiting a mutual friend of ours in April. I read through - and though it took me a few pages to fall in with it (I am used to reading a slightly different manga style) - Once I picked up on it, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read, with a fabulous mixture of Cute and Cutting edge for the artwork - and a rather witty dig with jokes and wording on the writer's part. I'm looking forward to purchasing Divalicious! #2 when it gets released this coming February!
