A wonderful book about Cape Breaton. As a "mainlander" I have gained a new respect for this beautiful island. It's not just a travel story, it's a story of a group of amazingly strong people.

If you want to understand the people of Cape Breton and why they are different from all other Canadians, this is your book!

Sailing around the entire Island in a home made boat, Cameron encounters people from all walks of Cape Breton life: farmers, fishermen, loggers, miners, Micmac Indians, politicians, journalists and many more. Every one has a tale to tell. All enlightening, many very funny and many heart-tugging. Hard to find, but worth it! (I had to go to Baddeck to get it!)

Anyone who enjoys sailing, geography, nature and down-to-earth people will enjoy this book. I have never been to Nova-Scotia and, yet, after reading this book, I feel I can smell the scent of the air over there, I can picture the numerous coves strewn along its rugged shoreline and, best of all, I get this sense of having been there and having met its inhabitants. A truely magical book

The World's Greatest Preachers - Wonderful Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-13
This book gives the personal history of each of these great preachers as well as their sermons. Spurgeon uses the Law (as do Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron today) to show people their need of a Savior. Whitefield's sermon includes the imputation of Christ's righteousness to us. Edwards, John Wesley, Martin Luther, R.A. Torrey and, of course, Whitefield and Spurgeon will move you to act. Ray Comfort's footnotes are very helpful and insightful. Kirk Cameron's Foreward will inspire you and make you eager to devour the contents of this book and then move out to ministry; get about the business of witnessing using these principles that leave people desperate for salvation. Ray and Kirk do as Jesus and the disciples and these preachers of old did - they use the Law as a schoolmaster to show us our sin and point us to the necessity of a Savior. No watered down gospel here. Just truth told in love. I highly recommend this book.

How to Evangelize

Ray Comfort's latest book is a perfect introduction to the evangelicals of the 19th century. As usual, he emphasizes the need to show sinners their sinfulness before they can understand the Gospel message. This truth, often neglected in modern evangelicalism, was the common practice of the great evangelists: Luther, Wesley, Whitefield, Spurgeon, and Edwards, who used the Law of God to confront the sinner's conscience and reveal his need for the Savior.

A characteristic sermon from each of these evangelists is featured in the book, along with introductory notes and footnotes by Ray Comfort.

Sermons include "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards, possibly the most famous Puritan sermon of all time, along with "Law and Grace" by Spurgeon, "The Lord Our Righteousness" by George Whitefield (my favorite sermon of all time), and three more.

The second part of the book includes essays by R.A. Torrey, John Wesley, Charles Spurgeon, and Gawin Kirkham. An excellent essay by Ray Comfort closes the volume.

I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is serious - or wants to be more serious! - about evangelism. With both examples of good evangelism, and guidelines to wise evangelism, every evangelical Christian should consider adding this book to his library.

They Show Us How

In this work, Comfort and Cameron, bring honor posthumously to the greatest oral preachers of the 19th Century, and leave their imposing voices thundering in our hearts and minds.

The sermon by George Whitefield (pronounced Whitfield) 'The Lord Our Righteousness' is the cornerstone of this volume, and I too accept it to be the greatest sermon ever preached.

'And we have inherited such pride that we would glory - if not wholly, at least in part - in being the cause of our own salvation. Judge it equally absurd, equally blasphemous, to join our obedience - either wholly, or in part - with the obedience of Christ, as if His was not sufficient. And if so, what absurdities will follow denying THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS?' pg 76

Edwards, Torrey, Spurgeon,Wesley, all weigh in and bring the importance of the Law in convincing sinners by way of their conscience, to bear on Christians.

A beautiful and gracious book.

Used with my 7th grade class. Good technique for reading comprehension practice. When they finished following directions to make the plane, we had a contest to see which one flew the best.

My son got this book as a gift, since he's been into making paper airplanes. He's five and still hasn't gotten the folding down perfectly, but this book has pretty good instructions for planes that fly well. It also comes with a bit of paper to make the planes with, and stickers to decorate the planes. We also have the Klutz book of Paper Airplanes and the Kid's Paper Air Plane book. I like the Zoom one in the middle of the two. For such a simple book, great planes can be made! The planes fly amazingly well and my boys have loads of fun with the planes for hours, racing them and seeing how far they can go.

It's o.k for a paper plane book.

many stereotypical films

Review Date: 2007-03-30
The majority of films described here were done by Americans or Europeans. Who chose Africa as the backdrop for various reasons. We see that in the early decades, many had a strong colonialist bent. Above all, the various Tarzan movies. Where Africans were merely portrayed as simple peoples, at best.

After World War 2, there is a dimunition of such themes. But now we see new ideas arising. Notably decolonisation and how the newly independent nations might fare.

Frankly, movies that differ from such stereotypes are indeed rare, in Cameron's analysis.

Excellent resource!

Both thorough and thoroughly readable, Africa on Film is indispensable for anyone interested in American and European movies about "the Dark Continent." Cameron knows his stuff and writes about it gracefully; I profited especially from his comments on Tarzan.

This book is another really good book. For people who don't know, this is a book about Geordi (from TNG) as a cadet in Starfleet Acadamy. Overall, this is a very good read, although I believe Capture The Flag (#4) is slightly better.

I picked the book for my nephew and ended up reading it myself. I thought it was an excelent book that lendsa bit of insight and history into the crews of the "Enterprise" and Calhoun's "Excelsior". I've been reading all of the Star Trek Starfleet Academy TNG Series.

I concur with "Dissapointed in Eugene" about the calendar being repeated year after year. My friend had purchased the Bad Girls 2004 calendar and passed along the funniest pages to me. I bought the 2005 version, and found every single page I'd kept from the 2004! As much as I loved the Bad Girls calendar, you may need to only ever buy it once.

I, too, loved these short, feel good stories and wish there had been more of them. They are like reading the kind of story they used to publish in magazines-- complete, but all too quickly over in one listen. The bad part is they left me wishing for more unabridged Pilcher books-- something so hard to find.

There are, unfortunately, only 2 stories on this book on CD. Well worth the purchase price, however. The stories are clever, beautifully written and narrated, and capture the listeners interest from beginning to end. I loved these.

Great fictional/historical tale of the life of Daniel Boone
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-03
This is a well done book putting a nice spin on the life of Daniel Boone. It brings together historical facts from the time of this early pioneer and adds a host of interesting fictional characters and adventures. Nothing like a 12 month trapping and hunting excursion to make a guy homesick...well, at least for a couple days or so.

I was impressed with this book. Definitely a recommended read.

Refreshing, amusing and enlightening
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2003-09-05
It is the presentation and design of this book together with its easy -to- read style which makes it exceptional in my opinion. Rather than the heavy-going politico-jargon I was expecting I found bite-sized chunks of fact, direct quotes and artistic representation of the topic.

The book covers feminism right back from its roots to the present day (the authors being depicted on the final page). The illustrations are extraordinary if somewhat obscurred at times by the black and white format. They feature the works of key feminist artists but also depictions of important characters who converse via speach bubbles. This may sound somewhat childish but I did not find this to be the case.

Issues covered include, historical and political events in the UK and abroad which led to the emergence of the movement, issues such as domestic tyranny and family roles, the role of the body, fertility, pregnancy and birth and pornography. There are a few what could be construed as explicit pictures which could possibly concern a parent who was thinking of buying it for children (the cover and the the use of "Introducing..." in the title giving it the feel of a school text book).

I was refreshed to read so accessible and comprehensive a book and thoroughly recommend it.

Good, but not great

As a teacher in women's studies I was hoping that this might make a good primer for my students. While it does a pretty good job as a history text, it really doesn't do a good job at introducing key concepts. This is especially true once it reaches the 1980s. I might also add that this text treats feminism as something that ended after the 80s. The book needs a good updating.

In short, if you are already familiar with the feminist movement, then this book makes a nice pocket guide and reminder. If you are new to the concepts, I would start somewhere else rather than here.

Evan is in the first book in the trilogy, Faces of a Clown, so are Mark and Laura and Bruce. I like it when characters really do play parts in following books rather than just running across a page somewhere.

Choices is a grown up book about balancing responsibilities with love and sex. The love is powerful, the sex is hot and the rest of the story is tense enough to keep you turning the pages.

I really enjoyed Faces of a Clown, too and I'm looking forward to Yes is Forever.
