A great overview of the ice climbing available in Colorado. The best book on the market.

I have all the ice guides to colorado, and this one is about the only one I trust. Ratings are, in my experience, slightly conservative, which is better than being the other way, particularly for ice climbs where getting in over your head can be very serious. Route information is, for all the routes in the book I've done, very accurate.

I bought this for an art history course in college. The book has many high quality illustrations and half of them are in color. The book also features many details of the works presented in it. There are also comments about what was happening in the artists' lives when they were painting the works shown. The book also includes the political events that occured during the 18th and early 19th centuries. There is even a timeline in the back which shows what was happening in the art world and in the political world at the same time. The book focuses on the Rococo, Neo-Classical, and Romantic movements in painting and sculpture. There is no mention of architecture. This is a great book to have if you like art history.

This is awesome! I've used Director for 2 years and was really excited about the new 3D features in 8.5 but thought I'd have to spend months learning how to use the engine. In 1 week of reading this I made my first user activated 3D projector that plays sound relational to my world.

I know why this book is so good: I looked at these guys sites in the front of the book for these authors - these guys really know how to create. Examples are inspirations!

This is the juice. I want more. Give me more.

Concise intro to the architecture of Catherine the Great

The text is sometimes a little dull and difficult to follow but the scope of the information presented is wide ranging and concise enough to keep you going. It was very enjoyable to learn about stuctures that you don't often see mentioned in other works. This is a very good addition to a library. I think that sometimes the text drifts from its intended purpose but the drifts are all pleasant.

Reading or browsing "The Empress and Architect" is a thrilling experience. Along with the great reproductions of Cameron's works, the Author of the book offers insightful and precise vision of syncretic relations between Russian and British culture. Unfortunately for Russia, the momentum of these cultural relatiions was abruptly ended after Bolshevik revolution of 1917. "The Empress and Architect" is truly one of the best books on Russian Classical Architecture published in English.

This is a wonderful visual history of china in the late Qing dynasty. It represents a wonderful era that few western eyes have really ever seen. The text is informative, and the beautiful sepia toned photos are truly stunning. If your even vaguely interested in this era of China's history, snap up this book now.

Don't judge this book by its cover!

Today's foodies tend to base first impressions of cookbooks by their cover. But don't be fooled by this one! Behind this rather uninspiring cover design hides a cookbook that is packed with flavor, beatiful photography, and innovative cuisine. The cover may be bland but the proof is in the recipes.

Running the gamut of grilled cuisine from appetizers to desserts, and touring the world of international flavors, this book is a treasure for barbecue enthusiasts looking for inspiring new ideas.

Particularly delicious was the Sirloin with Chimichurri Marinade redolent of garlic and fresh herbs with hint of chipotle heat. Or the Caramelized Lamb Chops with cilantro, brown sugar and mirin marinade.

Other recipes on my must-try list are: Pork Ribs with Mustard Bourbon Sauce, Soy-Ginger Chicken in Banana Leaf, Butterflied Thai Coconut Chicken Breasts, Chef Jon's Dry Cured Salt-Sugar Salmon, Pizza with Tomatoes and Chevre Pesto, Shrimp and Chorizo Skewers and Marsala-Poached and Grilled Pears.

Many of the recipes feature suggestions for accompaniments and most of them have full-color photos. An introductory lesson in grilling on a barbecue or grill pan and a back index round out the book.

Delicious!

I love interesting cookbooks that succeed in bringing food to a new level. Even if I never cook all of the recipes, I enjoy reading them.

Grill! by Pippa Cuthbert and Lindsay Cameron Wilson gives grilling a new twist. It provides tips for successful food preparation, a glossary and a list of the equipment that contributes to easy grilling. If you don't know how to butterfly chicken, you'll learn through reading the easy instructions.

The books contents are broken into starters, main meals, bread, skewered, salads and vegetables, desserts and accompaniments.

Some of my favorite recipes are: Butterflied Thai coconut chicken breasts, blackened halibut, the classic burger, Italian-style sandwiches, smoky Portobello mushroom burger, Korean beef with cherry tomatoes, grilled corn on the cob with lime butter, and the ever-popular grilled s'mores sandwiches.

Grill! is not a 'toss it on the grill and cook it' cookbook. It is a book that takes ingredients and turns them into yummy dishes. It requires time but it is worth the effort.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a cookbook for your library. We predict it will be used a lot.

Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish

One of my all time favourite books. Although actually written by author Cameron Shipp it was based on interviews he conducted with Mack Sennett - who, of his own admission, was a "Man of few Words" (how appropriate for someone who made the world laugh through the art of pantomime !).What matters, however, is the final product and,in this case, the results are brilliant. By all accounts, Shipp wrote in a style which was a perfect reflection of Sennett's personality and manner of speaking. This is a fascinating tale about the birth of Hollywood as told by one of it's truly great pioneers who was there right from the very beginning. All the excitement, energy , glamour and sheer chaos of those early days "Out West" are captured in the pages of this book. It provides an intriguing insight into how movies were made and the people who made them. Mr Sennett's recollections of the William Desmond Taylor case as related in this book were responsible for generating the on-going interest in the subject which continues to this day.Throughout the whole thing Mack's wit and herculean sense of fun is ever present.Thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

The King of Comedy Still Reigns

In "King of Comedy", Mack Sennett gives an honest critique of how he came to be one of the greats of early cinema comedy with the creation of the Keystone Kops and the discovery of greats such as Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle and Mabel Normand. He started out his career wanting to be a singer but his hulking size and deep bass precluded any fame on the opera stage. His stories of how Calvin Coolidge and Marie Dressler were integral to his procuring early stage work are priceless. The history of the formation of the Keystone Kops and their comic stylings is an interesting one and his sidebars on the idiosyncrasies of each individual Kop is insightful. But as I read this, the subject of Mabel Normand kept surfacing...both in my mind and in his text. So, what about Mabel? Many stories have circulated about why Mack Sennett didn't marry Mabel Normand. Actually, this book is somewhat of a love story...how Mack loved filmmaking, how Mabel loved Mack Sennett, how Mr. Sennett loved Mabel but let her slip away. All of this is done, however, in an honest and straightforward way that never slips into sentimentality or insincerity. At one point in the book Mr. Sennett is talking about his courtship of Mabel Normand right after he moved to CA and while she was still working in New York. He had already given her a ring but had not proposed marriage. He wired Mabel from CA and asked her to come work for him in his new ramshackle CA studio. Mr. Sennett states that there were two questions he could have asked Mabel at that moment, and he often still wonders what would have happened if he had asked her the more important question of the two. Mack Sennett mentions many of the biggest stars at that time and even gives his account if some of the biggest scandals of the day (the William Desmond Taylor murder and the rape trial of Fatty Arbuckle). The tone never slips into gossipy backbiting; however, with Mr. Sennett plainly stating when he is expressing his own opinion or when he doesn't have all the pertinent information. It is also amusing to read Mr. Sennett's response to all the modern day accolades thrust upon him for his "artistic achievement". Basically, he just wanted to make people laugh...and laugh they did. I recommend this book to anyone interested in early cinema, comedy or a good love story.

This is a story which I felt is best suited to the younger reader. It tells the tale of a horse, from birth, through dressage training to the olympic arena. The writing style is quite inspirational and aimed at promoting good sportsmanlike conduct and horsemanship.

Very inspirational!

this is a good book in that it provides a management model for consideration, explains it thoroughly, and then applies that model directly to a very interesting and challenging business situation. The idea that abundance - or driving for the ultimate activity - is doable is a new approach, and one that flies in the face of the "stretch goal" failure currently in management thinking. this books takes "beyond" and gives it texture - and real examples

A terrific book. How to succeed from Abundance rather than trapping yourself in error avoidance

This is an exceptional and, I think, an important book. The authors are trying to get at the things that enable the kind of exceptional performance that we all say we want and that some of us have been fortunate to experience at some point in our careers, if only briefly. We all know the kind of things that go into exceptional performance in sports whether for individual performance or as one of those "great" teams. While visualization was a revolutionary idea decades ago, nowadays we all know that athletes work with "pretty pictures". They focus on mental images of what they want to do rather than focusing on the mistakes they might make. It is the positive imagery that frees them to do the exceptional things they do and reach greater success than even similarly talented people who tie themselves in knots trying to avoid failure.

This book uses the fabulous performance and success of cleaning up the Rocky Flats plutonium processing facilities as a real life example of Positive Deviance - of performing from Abundance rather than trying to manage performance by monitoring mistakes and poor performance. With the end of the Cold War and changes in America's nuclear program, several facilities that had been deemed vital (despite the intense environmental issues surrounding the processing of radioactive materials and building them into weapons) were now closed and had to be cleaned up. The original projections for Rocky Flats planned for 70 years and $36 billion.

Instead, the team at Rocky Flats went through an internal process that took hold of Abundance and Positive Deviance. They dismantled the 800 buildings and cleaned the site in 10 years and for $6 billion. No other DOE facility cleanup has approached this performance.

In telling this story the authors did several things right. First, they give us an overview of what the issues are - so you can begin to develop your own questions and challenges to the incredible story they are tell us. They then give us an overview of what Positive Organizational Scholarship and Abundance are about and what the literature shows us. And in telling the story of Rock Flats they use the words of the participants. This adds a great deal to the richness and depth of perspective into the way work happened and how it changed over time.

Another way the authors help us understand the complex story of Rocky Flats is using the Competing Values model that was developed by Cameron and Quinn. It provides a means for analyzing the various cultural styles in the work place and how the level of success shown in Rocky Flats requires a paradoxical style. That is, it requires creativity and a free enough structure to innovate while at the same time requiring careful monitoring and measurement. There are many paradoxes that have to be managed in something as large and as complex as this cleanup.

Along the way they raise several alternative views that could explain away the success of this mammoth project. With careful examination, it becomes very hard to give them much weight. Other views are also presented in Appendix 1. That the authors are so open about other possibilities for the success or that it is all an illusion I think strengthens their case.
For me, the biggest reward came in chapter 9 when everything discussed previously is brought together in a very practical way. The reader is given a very practical explanation of the principles learned from this project and how to apply them in one's own work.

So, do yourself a favor and open your mind to approaching work from the Abundance model rather than trying to find success by avoiding mistakes. It is not only a more successful way to work, it is a lot more fun and better for everyone around you.
