Underwater oddities.

This is a movie novelisation, and a pretty decent job. In fact, in this case I like it more than the other, which was rather tedious, so I can recommend the book as far as that goes.

As far as the story goes, underwater explorers find something definitely not human, and some of the new gear they are trying gets used to try and help understand and communicate.

Uncle Orson's novel adds a whole new dimension to Cameron's movie

The dusk jacket of this novel takes great pains to explain that this is "A Novel by Hugo and Nebula Award-winning Author Orson Scott Card based on an original screenplay by James Cameron." That lengthy description is important because it is trying to make it crystal clear that this is NOT a "novelization" of a screenplay, and to give you some idea what a unique and exquisite book you are reading. Card provides an entirely new dimension to Cameron's screenplay.

I still think "The Abyss" is James Cameron's best movie, Oscar winning block busters aside, although that other film certainly proves water is his natural element. Displeased with the "cursory, mediocre, often inaccurate, and sometimes downright reprehensible" novelizations he had already read of his films, Cameron determined there would be a NOVEL. In a totally unique process, Card worked from videotapes of the film as the editing progressed, updating his manuscript as scenes were changed, added or cut. In addition to covering everything you see in the film version of "The Abyss," Card made two significant contributions to the story in his novel.

First, he wrote chapters focusing on the three main characters of Buddy, Linsey and Coffee. Each chapter goes back to when they were kids and relates the seminal events that made them the people they grew up to be and brought them to the setting of this story. Cameron was so impressed with these chapters that before filming began he gave them to Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (and you have to wonder what Michael Biehn would have done with the background on Coffey). Second, Card works in the entire story from the side of the alien beings, explaining what they are doing and thinking even when they are not around the humans on Deepcore. Things that you wondered about in the film (How could Coffey survive that great depth and cut the right wire?) will be made clear and the additional scenes add great depth to the film (intentional pun).

It is because of this added dimension that I think you will best enjoy this book after you have seen the film and more specifically the Special Edition or Director's Cut of the film. Of course, I can certainly appreciate that fans of Orson Scott Card might pick up "The Abyss" without any care about the movie. This is not a bad thing either because Card is a first rate imaginative writer, as he has proven from "Ender's Game" to "Enchantment." If you loved the movie, you will love the book. You do not want to miss out on this one.

This is a very unusual book, as it was written AT THE SAME TIME as the movie (from what I remember). I loved this movie, and the book was great to go along with it... it starts with 3 chapters to give you background on the characters. But after that, it's EXACTLY true to the movie, but what's cool is you get to see all the emotions and thoughts that aren't in the movie, and it doesn't feel like it's a "book based on the movie" or anything. I was able to find this book at a used book store, and it was definitely worth buying. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I read it 5 years ago and I'm not sure if it is truly 5 star worthy.

I haven't written a book review since college many years ago.
The reason I decided to write this one is because it truly touches your heart & soul. Like pg. 21 Living Each Day As If It's Your Last. In my field of work I often hear people say if only...
(and now it's too late)this has made me stop & think of things I wish I had done. However this book really speaks to you & helps you put what is important to you in perspection.
There are so many other affirmations & poems that I believe everyone could relate to. This book is easy to read and will leave you in deep thought on some pages & smiles on the next!
The title fits perfectly!

The cover of this book caught my eye the day I moved from Hawaii to San Francisco, so I bought it and was totally absorbed in the story for the entire 6 hour flight! This was before the movie had been released, but the novel's cover indicated that it would soon be in the theatres and I thought: "If the movie stays true to the book, then WOW! How Flawless that would be!"...of course, that wasn't the case...(but the book is a MUST READ!!!)
At anyrate, the books themes and morals dealing with humanity's arrogance, ignorance, nuclear-war capabilities and our potential to "love", truly struck home for me...I was moved to tears. This was the first time all those issues were brought together in such a manner that this novel literally helped me to adopt a new attitude about myself, this planet, other lifeforms and the due respect we need to have for all of it! This novel should be used in schools to help teach kids the important values it contains! Way to go Orson!

This was a required text for a MBA management class I was taking. While I enjoyed the class, the book itself was disappointing, and even the authors point out that many of the surveys and self-analysis tools are limited because the better tools are all proprietary. Most of the book is a re-hash of standard managment philosophy, with some statistical justification thrown in.
If you are looking to improve your management skills, I recommend going straight to the primary sources, which includes most of Stephen Covey's books, along with other management and self-improvement books like Emotional Intelligence, Execution, One-Minute Manager, etc. This book tries to cover the same ground, but ends up being far less informative or interesting then the popular management books it emulates.

Review Date: 2008-06-02
After many years of waiting on her long time fiancé to finally set a date Desiree, a paralegal with dreams of becoming a lawyer, finally decides enough is enough. As she works her way through the disappointment and heartache of a love lost, Desiree is assigned to a white attorney who is making a name for himself in the firm they both work for. Tyler's thoughtfulness is the first thing that stands out as he and Desiree work together on a big case. Different backgrounds and baggage are nothing as the two slowly become enamored with each other. Emotions Desiree is unsure of how to handle considering her background and her knowledge that her family and friends won't be as welcoming to the idea of her seeing a white man. Tyler is unwilling to be a closeted secret and Desiree will have to decide what's more important, her growing love for Tyler or her family's prejudice to a man who loves her better than she's ever been loved before.

In a story where race is the main obstacle, Never Say Never, is another story in the ever growing interracial market where without the drama of racial prejudice there isn't much else to the actual plot. Michele Cameron is a decent writer I personally just believe the racial aspects of interracial love affairs have been done so much that that the it has lost its excitement. Desiree for a woman who seemed to be polished and intelligent really deferred to her family a little too much when it came to matters of the heart. Tyler was a gentleman but also a man with his own mind, unwilling to allow anyone else's views to dictate if he would date Desiree, which made him extremely appealing as the male lead in the story. I'm hoping if Ms. Cameron decides to do another interracial love story she will create one where the story has a focus other than race.

This novel is based on a interracial relationship. I have never read one of these kinds of books before but I am so happy that I bought this. It was so realistic as it deals with the stereotypes people have about this. It also deals with sexual harassment, something that happens every day in the workplace and it touches on the down low man. The relationships between the family members is hilarious and the failings of the main character Desiree is realistic. I can't wait for the next book from this author!

I have read several interracial romance and I have to say by far this is one the best that I have read. I purchase this book while I was in Chicago. Talking to friend of mine she was telling me about the book and I have to say that the way she describe the character is what got me and I went out and purchase the book. I love me some Tyler.
Desiree is woman who dreams of becoming an attorney. Desiree has been in a relationship with her boyfriend for 6 years and 3 of those years they was engaged. Desiree is at a point in her life where she is ready to get married and she confront her long time boyfriend who is not ready and comes up with all kind of reason for them not to get married, so Desiree make the only decision she could make they break up. Althought Travis just think Desiree need some time apart and that once she has calm down thing will go back to the way they was little to Travis know.

Tyler is a up and coming lawyer who works with Desiree on a case. Although Tyler has been flirting with Desiree he decided one day to bite the bullet and ask Desiree out of course this takes her by surprise so she doesn't know how to handle the situation. Now remember Desiree is working with Tyler so she thinking this is not a good thing for them to do. At this time you will see that they are attracted to each other and neither one plan for this to happen. Onec they decided to get to know each other and see where the relationship is going the couple begin to tackles all of the stigmas and taboo's of white/black dating as well as extended families. Tyler's divorced with two kids, secure, strong and don't take no mess from anybody and that include Desiree.

Can't give to much a way, but I recommend you read this book. If you love a truly good love story you will love this.

This book is a perfect example of sloppy editing. Stiff dialogue, uneven pacing, two-dimensional characterization, absence of conflict, flabby structure and just loose writing (not to mention some basic copy editing that should have been performed before it went to print.) It read like a first or second draft. Come on!

I refuse to blame the author. I blame her editor (or lack of one.) Indigo, what is going on? This is not the first book from them that I get a really strong feeling that they know that they can sell product, no matter how sloppy, and we'll buy it because there's no other distributor for it. Jeebus.

Am I harsh? Maybe. I'm also a big fan of romance novels (all of them) and I can't help but compare these authors to Sandra Kitt or Jennifer Crusie and these continue to fall short. Geez, what do I have to do to get a decent IR romance - write one of my own?? (Hey, that's a thought.)

I am a licensed Counselor, who specializes in trauma/substance abuse.
In reviewing this book, I have found it to be a wonderful book for my client's partners to better understand their significant other's needs and their own. This book creats hope for both partners, and supports increased and healthy communication between both individuals. I would recommend this book for anyone who practices within this field, or an individual who is involved in a loving relationship with a person who has been sexually abused. Remember:"It is better to be active and supportive with those that have been abused, then to do nothing at all, and hope one day things will work itself out."

This book may not earn awards for best literary style, but you can feel the sincerity of deep understanding through this author's words. As with any material, I disagreed with portions of its contents; however, I wish my husband and I would have owned this book at the beginning of our healing process. It gives you a realist overview of the turmoil you will face as a couple. As the abused victim, I was so consumed in my healing that the silent screams of what my husband was dealing with went unheard by everyone. Men, while trying to remain strong and supportive, suffer alone with forgotten wounded hearts which also have to heal.

Although this book is somewhat helpful, it is, unfortunately, based mostly on the anecdotal experience of one couple [the author and his wife]. I think that Allies in Healing is a more helpful book - if you are looking for a book written mostly for spouses of survivors.

To husbands: FYI - the healing is a very long and arduous process - it ain't pretty, and it really helps if you have a LOT of love and MORE stamina. If so, I highly recommend "Women Who Hurt Themselves" by Dusty Miller. It's a tough read, but will put things into a logical framework for you. This issue has a lot of gender implications in its understanding, and a logical framework seems to be essential for the male in the role of supportive mate.

This is an absolute must read for any men out there who have women partners that have suffered childhood sexual abuse in any of its many and abhorrent forms. My wife suffered this from no less than three different males in her life before the age of 14, and two of them were relatives. I, like you, needed some reference material to try and help me cope with how to help her, and though there isn't going to be a cookie cutter answer for every situation... this book offers a lot of insight and gives you some starting points to begin looking for help.

Thanks.

Sorry, but...it's hard...to...write anything, due to the fact that I (Well, my wife did have a little input) (LOL) raised three (count 'em--3) daughters. And, Lord bless 'em, we allowed all three to live. Although the session about the telephone rang very true back then, these days everybody has their own cellular phone, so tht's a tad out of date. Nevertheless, this is a "too true to be believed" read. Hilarious! I recommend it even for you poor fools out there without the pure joy of raising daughters. (Maybe sons also...) Charles A. Marquez writes in such a way that you find yourself in Macondo, living along the coronel, seeing what he sees and feeling immersed in a simple life where after all is stripped away through time, hope remains. It is that which we all can feel as we too wait, with determination, with hope, even if there is nothing left.

It's hard to believe that anyone could go through this book, do all the questions, and not come out of the SCJA exam with an incredibly high score.

The book seems larger on the web, don't let the photos trick you into thinking you are getting a huge book for the price. Although, the book seems to cover all the material and at close to 400 pages is probably a good deal. After all, there isn't much out there on this subject available on public sites...(check with the school bookstores, but i dont think many people have spent much time writing textbooks on this subject)maybe thats why the publisher charges so much for a book thats only 8.5 x 5.5 inches!

I used this book and the SCJA guide SCJA Sun Certified Java Associate Study Guide for Test CX-310-019, 2nd Edition - Incredible Update to the former ExamScam Book from the same publisher. To pass, the study guide will get you there, but if you want a really high score on the exam, I suggest you pick up this book as well. It's got over 350 exam questions - like writing the SCJA exam 7 times before you actually take the test. You can't get much more prepared than that.

This book was so amazing. I don't know why but one day at the library I saw a book called Stephanie: Heart of Gold....weird as I am I took it thinking a book with the same name as me would be good. I was hooked right after I read that book. I checked out more and more books by Cameron Dokey. She's an amazing writer...the romance she talks about it's so close to what teenagers face. This is definatly a young adult novel. It is mysterious, romantic, and also sad. Crying may be an option that will happen sooner or later. But it's worth reading it, the book is amazing.

This book is the awesome story of a strong young woman, Ginny Nolan, who embarks on a desperate journey in order to escape her horrid and controlling relatives. For years, Ginny was forced to live with her unloving stepbrother-in-law and his snobby upper-class wife. When she finds out that her relatives are planning to marry her off to a man who only wants her fortune, she makes up her mind to run away and boards a train that very night. On the train, she meets Virginia Hightower, a young girl her own age who shares a striking physical resemblance with her. They become friends instantly and Ginny soon finds out that Virginia too has led a hard life and is on her way to marry a man she's never met. Since Virginia's terrified that her intended will turn out to be as harsh as her father, Ginny agrees to switch identities with her so she can find out what her fiance is like. The two women's lives are turned upside down when Ginny and Nicholas, Virginia's charming fiance, find themselves falling in love and Ginny becomes torn between loyalty to her best friend and the fierce love she's found with Nicholas. On top of everything else, the three of them soon find their very lives in danger when the train becomes trapped in the path of a deadly avalanche.

I can honestly tell you that I DESPISE sappy romance stories, and this awesome book is nothing like that. Ginny is a truly lovable heroine, but she has her faults and is luckily not annoyingly perfect or swoony. Virginia is also sweet and spunky, and I found myself alternately sympathising and scolding both characters at different times. One of the best things about this story is that the characters and the circumstances are very realistic; the author never sugarcoats anything and the plot twists are often very hard on the characters. Don't expect a sugary sweet fairytale ending, either. The ending is moving, but there's a lot of tragedy mixed with the joy and I cried every time I read it. The ending is good, however, and I really can't understand why a few other people said that it wasn't moral or that Ginny wasn't a good heroine. Yes, she does make a big mistake near the end of the book, but she pays for it dearly and nearly loses everything because of it. Try to remember what Ginny's going through before you judge her too harshly.

All in all, this book was one of the very best in the Historical Romance series and I highly recommend it even if you don't generally like romance. Cameron Dokey is truly a remarkable writer who knows a lot about human nature and I suggest checking out anything written by her, especially her retold fairy tales!

This book is an interesting story about a young woman who trades places with another young woman because she is afraid of meeting her new fiance that she has never seen or talked to. It turns out that the man is actually sweet and charming, so the first young woman wants to trade back places, but they have already lied to everyone, so it is too late. The end is sad, but also happy as well. I recommend it to all historical fiction fans.

I selected the novel because I'm a hopeless romantic with completely idealistic thoughts and expectations of love and relationships. The novel definitely fit the reader in this case. If you're not a romantic don't read the book, but if you are, it's a tear jerker and heart flitter. I was taken with the character of Ginny. Ginny escapes her stepbrother who is trying to take her inheritance by marrying her off to a scoundrel. On the train, Ginny meets Virginia who is also escaping her abusive father in a sense. She is part of an arranged marriage to Nicholas Bennett. Since Virginia's father is abusive, and her father arranged the marriage Virginia asks Ginny to switch identities with her so that she can check Nicholas out before marrying him (She assumes that Nicholas must also be like her father.). Nicholas checks out to be a great find for Virginia, but Ginny and Nicholas fall in love before the switch is revealed.

This is the story of two girls: Virginia and Ginny. They look alike and both come from tragic and difficult backgrounds. Ginny is running away from her step-brother to start a new life in Seattle, and Virginia is on her way to marry a man she has never met. Virginia helps Ginny escape her brother, and Ginny wants to return the favor. So...Ginny agrees to pretend she is Virginia and meet this "Nicholas" guy (Virginia's betrothed) and pretend that Virginia is her best friend. This way, Virginia can check him out and make sure he's fit to be a husband. However, there is chemistry between Nicholas and Ginny, and Ginny can't find it in her to tell Nick the truth.
Virginia, of course, is furious, because Nicholas is a great guy, and he's HER fiancee. What will Nick do when he finds out the truth (which he's bound to find out!). Plus, all this is happening on a train that's stranded in the middle of a snowstorm, and all the passengers might very well die anyway!

Truth to tell, this book was a fun read. It was quick, fast (including the beginning), and cute. If you really want to read a book that's historical, I wouldn't recommend this book. Realistically, you aren't going to see literary elements or historical detail in this book. You're not going to learn anything from themes or anything. I mean, this isn't that type of book. I don't think it was meant to be. But that isn't why I gave it 4 stars.
The reason that I took away 1 star is because of Ginny. She's not exactly the best main character. After all, she takes Virginia's betrothed away from her. Plus, she makes a bad decision in the book in a desperate attempt (which I'm not going to give away).
The book was a good read, but if you are looking for historical romance, read Ann Rinaldi. Her audience is more geared towards younger readers, but her books "teach" more and are (in my opinion) more original. From this series, the only other one I have read is Hindenburg. I recommend it over Washington Avalanche, though the ending is sad. If you like Dokey, I recommend highly The Storyteller's Daughter.
