Euan Cameron has written a very informed history of the Waldensian dissent, using a lot of prime source material in such a way that it is for scholar and lay persons interested in church history a delight to read. It is well written and makes delightful reading. It is anything but a dry summary of facts. Both from the perspective of faith and history, this is a good book. It gives good unbiased information about a very interesting group of people at a turbulent time in church history. I highly do recommend it.

This is about a Mom and family, willing to talk about trusting yourself and your special needs child. It shows the demonstration of the power of parental love and determination. What most people would look at as a tragedy, this family views as opportunities for growth and happiness. It deals with the anxiety and grief surrounding diagnosis and a resolve to get the best care possible as pro-active parents. The most critical part deals with the acceptance of your child for who he is...unconditional love.

I found this to be a very clear prescription for maintaining connection to your creative side. I did not expect the book to be this good, but the writing is great.
Julia knows of which she speaks. It is truly motivating to read her words. She covers many aspects of life, and how to maintain a creative relationship with yourself.
I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in moving to a higher level in life.

With apologies to Orson Wells, George Pal and Steven Speilberg, the Classics Illustrated version of H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" was, is, and ever will be the best visual version of this classic book. The artwork by Lou Cameron is simply superb and Harry Miller's written adaptation faithfully captures the book without sacraficing any of the action. Although some may consider the appearnce of the tripods to be a bit dated by today's standards (they resemble Cold War era tank turrets mounted on water tower legs with vacuum cleaner hoses for "arms") they still retain a menacing appearance within the context of the story. The story itself thankfully remains grounded in the late 19th century when Wells wrote it. A pity that Speilberg decided to ruin the story by making it about a dysfunctional 21st century family. The image on the cover of the tripods attacking a World War I era artillery crew is not just classic; it's poetic.

The word "angel" has acquired a positive meaning today, but as you probably know, that is a connotation developed throughout culture and in fact there are all kinds of angels. This book is an essential resource for angel lore research, and a nice reference book. There are four parts to this book:
1 - Introduction: Here the author gives an introduction to angels and some of the origins of their names, and it also contains a brief list (with explanations) of technical terms that are encountered in the book, like various religions and languages. 12 pages.
2 - A-Z of Angels: This is the focus of the book. An entry consists of a name, along with a description. Where appropriate, you are directed to a different entry. 197 pages.
3 - Descriptive Bibliography and Further Reading: Self-explanatory. 5 pages.
4 - Angel Attributes: Here is an alphabetical list of things of various forms, such as natural disasters, celestial bodies, human traits, days -- just about anything -- which can be attributed to known angels. A sample entry reads "War- see Michael, Gadreel, Phaleg." 3 pages.
That is pretty much the rundown of this book. Obviously you are reading this review for an opinion on whether it's worth getting or not, and believe me: if you are studying angel lore, or even if you just need a reference for whatever other reasons, you should get this. The author, Julia Cresswell, specializes in mythology, the Middle Ages, and language. She has an MA and Doctorate, so this book is the product of serious academic research. Obviously when you're dealing with topics like this it's impossible to know the authenticity of all the details, but the bottom line is, this book aims to be as accurate as possible, and is not a work of fiction. I would also recommend Gustav Davidson's "A Dictionary of Angels - including the fallen angels" to those who want a more complete source, but this book is one that you should not be without. It's worth a lot more than it costs.

Peggy Sue's Own Story

If you've ever wondered 'Whatever happened to Peggy Sue?', the girl Buddy Holly sang about in the song of the same title, then this book will not only answer that question, but will provide insight into the lives and times of some of the people she knew. Peggy Sue tells the vivid story of an average girl thrust into the spotlight by the popular song bearing her name.
Some authors write stories that claim to report facts, when really, their main thrust is to tear down their subjects. Peggy Sue Gerron and her co-author, Glenda Cameron, have crafted a revealing story based on a diary Peggy Sue kept. The result is a well-written and informative book that left this reader with the impression that those described therein were flesh and blood individuals, complete with their strengths and weaknesses.
Whilst some of the details might be perceived as unflattering, they are not the focus of this book. It is the impression of this reader that Peggy Sue took great care to blend the positive aspects of the people involved in her life, with their real actions and emotions. Peggy Sue does not waste the reader's time relating myths. She has told a story that is long overdue.
Some would have us believe that certain people can 'do no wrong', as it were. They want to protect the perception that others have of those who have come to be in the public eye, be they alive or dead.
If you read 'Whatever Happened to Peggy Sue?' with the objectivity that it was written with, you will have a better idea of what life was like for this rather famous girl of the 1950s, as well as those who she knew and loved.

Both this book and Deejay & Betty I read in one sitting... fantastic accounts of people (espcecially women and children) and how they survive various forms of abuse with love and humor. Her ear for dialogue is fantastic. If there were an Anne Cameron fanzine I would be a charter subscriber!

Empowering is such a politically correct word, but this book about being brave in the face of fear, as one's foremothers were, is adorable, witty, and empowering. As as adult I liked it, and my daughter liked it. Would make a great present for any young girl. Great illustrations, too.

Winning Is Everything was awesome. But the summary was pretty far off from the real plot. After D.J.'s party for getting good grades in college, Stephanie feels like she needs to win something. So, she decides to run for class president. But there's a problem; Allie, her best friend, is running for president too. Stephanie goes all out in her campaign, giving away candy, pulling showy-stunts, while Allie's campaign is much more conservative, and only focuses on the school's issues. Allie and Stephanie aren't really getting along, so Allie decides to drop out and become Stephanie's running mate. Then, Stephanie and Allie win! But things aren't turning out the way Stephanie plans. She forgets almost everything for the student councel, and Allie does all of Stephanie's work. Finally, Stephanie realizes that she can no longer be president, since she can't handle the job. But Steph is already president and stuck! Uh-oh. How will she get out of this mess?

Animal fiction at its best

If you enjoyed reading animal fiction classics like Watership Down then you may find this book accessible and engaging. Langford portrays the inquisitiveness and intelligence of the fisher without making the animal seem like a person in a fur suit. And the fisher's encounters with the only two humans for miles around seemed authentic. This book is an easy but rewarding read for both children and adults.
