I read this a few years ago and loved it. I own the entire series of Shadow Lady and never get tired of reading them. I must warn you, there is some nudity (nothing explicit) and some weird humor (not off-color, but not kiddie fare either). If you don't mind seeing a little flesh or reading a sexual-related sentence, then by all means, go for it! You won't regret it!

I picked this book up last summer as an "airplane book" for an overseas trip. I ended up reading it three times during that trip, and enjoyed it hugely. "The Shoes of Kilimanjaro" is a great story about footwear... most especially about the footwear worn by climbing porters & guides on Mt Kilimanjaro. Imagine carrying a 50 lb duffel bag on your head, up a 19,000' mountain, wearing flip-flops and old Adidas knockoffs! Also highly entertaining is "Touching the 'Roid" (you can guess what that's about!), and "In Patagonian Therapy," and "I Dreamed of African Lions."

Pick up a copy of this great book and enjoy!!

An Epic of Human Courage, Caring and Connection

I just finished reading this amazing book by Cameron Powers and highly recommend it. It is an incredible tale of the beauty of the Middle East, the generosity and humanity of the men, women and children who inhabit those countries and make them palaces of the heart. As one reads this amazing tale of human warmth and connection, one can only be dismayed by the treacherous foreign policies of U.S. and European government and corporate agents who justify genocide by pretending that people who seek to defend themselves from murder, rape, torture, theft, deceipt, violation of international laws, etc., are anything less than human.

But this book is NOT a political polemic or diatribe. It is a story of amazing friendships, of opulent hospitality, of heartfelt generosity - and the amazing capacities of Palestinians, Iraqis, Jordanians, Syrians and Egyptians to open their hearts, their homes, and their treasures to people willing to simply taste and receive. This book is an amazing invitation to be about our lives as individuals liberated from any false allegiance to the plunder rackets orchestrated by government and corporate thugs in our name.

Dare to Live! Dare to Love! Read this Book and Rejoice in your own freedom to choose, to connect, and to make your own way daringly and lovingly!

A fine and insightful survey

The _Short Oxford History of Europe_, under the general editorship of T.C.W. Blanning, is an especially well-edited series of 11 brief but meaty topical surveys covering the region's entire recorded history, from Ancient Greece to the latter part of the 20th century. The reader is assumed already to know the broad outlines of European history and to want look below the surface of events to the underlying forces and trends. While each volume is composed of a series of articles by experts who bring unique understanding and insights the result is much more integrated and consistent than that of the usual collective work. The transitions between volumes are well managed so that the series can be read as a seamless history from start to finish if desired, but the reader who is looking only for insight into a particular period can read just one or two volumes without feeling that he is missing the secret key.

The overall impression, in fact, is a good deal like a far shorter (and much more affordable) version of the _Cambridge History_ series.

The chief lack is of good references to sources. At the end of each volume is a "further reading" section which is generally pretty thorough and helpful, but there is no way to tell where a particular fact or insight comes from except in those cases where the chapter author has mentioned the origin in his or her text.

It should be understood that these are not narrative histories of the events of their periods. A timeline of major events is provided at the back, as well as a series of clearly-presented maps, but the chapters cover topics rather than sub-periods, and generally are not themselves organized chronologically.

Covering a century that included much of the Renaissance, the Reformation, the age of European oceanic exploration, and the beginnings of the Counter-Reformation, this volume meets the challenge of integration admirably. In weaving them together it illuminates all these seemingly disparate strands. Amazon's helpful "Look Inside" feature gives a good idea of its contents and style.

The essential guide to Sublett/Sublette family genealogy.

Review Date: 2008-01-18
About this book:

In 1963, the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research published a series of articles by Cameron Allen, "The Sublett (Soblet) Family of Manakintown, King William Parish, Virginia," chronicling the arrival of Abraham Soblet and his family in the New World in 1700, and the first several generations of their descendants.

Through the 1980s, these articles were collected and reprinted in book form, with additional notes and research added by Donald Jackson Sublette. Ultimately, a seventh edition was published in 1994, comprising all of Sublette's updates and a new index.

In 2000 and 2003, The American Genealogist published two new articles by Cameron Allen, focusing on the family's Huguenot ancestors in Europe before 1700: "The Soblets of the European Refuge" and "Ancestral Table of Suzanne Brian, Wife of Abraham Soblet."

This 45th Anniversary edition collects all of Cameron Allen's articles on the Soblet/Sublett/Sublette family for the first time, the result of more than four decades of research, along with a new Preface explaining the author's interest in Huguenot genealogy.

With more than 1,000 footnotes and an index of names, this book is the essential starting point for all researchers of Soblet/Sublett/Sublette family history.

About the author:

Cameron Allen, J.D., is a retired Law Librarian at Rutgers University School of Law in Newark, N.J., and a Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists. Working together it appears that nothing, except maybe sheer dumb luck, will stop Hunter from returning to the Outer World. However this is before they come up against a creature called the Soul Eater. I hope there will be more Spider Riders books in the future. I mean there's still a cliffhanger at the end. Will Hunter ever make it home?

I thought this screenplay was absolutely great. It was actually better than the movie even. I liked that Faith(portrayed by the superb Juliette Lewis in the film.) was used more in the book. She was my favorite out of everyone. I wish they had used more of the scenes she was in for the movie, it would have made it better. If you have seen the movie you should really read it, it will make you appriciate it more. If you are a fan of the movie or science fiction, I suggest you check this book out. It also includes really cool pictures from the movie!
