The Cutting Edge of Visual Art Today
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
As far as I know, this is the only book so far on Steinkamp's impressive work. She creates mostly abstract video animations (using a program appropriately called Maya) and then projects them on a large scale, often creating complete room-size environments in this way. Their actual experience is of immersing oneself in a strange space or "landscape" of constantly moving, weaving colors, often with specially comnposed music in a contemporary vein -- very psychedelic, but also informed by color theory and the history of art and sometimes poltics. And the viewers' shadows become part of the work. Of course, a book can't quite capture the experience itself, but this will help a lot. Dave Hickey's essay is the boldest and best of the three essays included, all of them well informed and illuminating. This may well be the future of visual art, so get with it! You can also go to her website and view quicktime movies of some of her works and projective installations (including the huge outdoor one in Las Vegas). I'm not as fond of some of her recent work using more realistic plant and other forms, but even those are interesting.

Great Movie Great Script!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-03
I am currently doing a course that requires me to read scripts and to make the exercise more enjoyable, have chosen to read scripts of movies I love and by people I admire - namely Mr Cameron Crowe. As well as being the script from the movie there are two added bonuses to this edition - included is Jerry Maguire's Mission Statement (which started the whole ball rolling for the film) and also a commentary by Cameron Crowe at the start of the book giving details of how the idea for the film came about; his research and how long it took to write the script; casting (the insights into the casting are very interesting); and his failed attempts to get Billy Wilder to play Dicky Fox, Jerry Maguire's mentor.

Reading scripts to movies always gives a deeper insight to the characters and the plot of the story and this is no exception. It is also helped by Cameron Crowe's notes at the start and his description of how Tom Cruise approached the part of Jerry Maguire.

If you are a film buff and enjoy this movie you will enjoy the script.

Eye opening read

Before I read this I was under the impression that Jimmy Shand was a shy and retiring man, however it seems that his love of motorbikes was just as passionate as his love of music.

Scottish Country Dance music was my "bread and butter" as a child and this booked hightened that for me.

A great book for all to read.......Not to be missed!

Although I am considerably beyond the "young adult"
target audience for Clarence Cameron's book, I found
it captivating, exhaustively researched, and extremely
well-written. I'm reconvinced as an environmentalist.

All the magic and mystery of childhood
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-19
This is the first of the Julia Redfern books by Cameron, although she wrote it second to last! It's a fun and engaging story of a young Julia (6 yrs old I think) living with her parents and older brother Greg, in a small rented house in Berkeley, California. Julia is a spirited, imaginative girl who must deal with nosey neighbors, a rich aunt who favors her brother, and many adventures big and small. The author brings her whole world to life in vivid prose. Julia is someone you'll want to follow through the whole series of books.

A must-have when visiting Kananaskis country!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-08
Not having visited the Kananaskis Valley since a child, I felt I needed some up-to-date information on the area. Ward Cameron's book on the subject fills the bill, describing subjects as history of the area, wildlife, backcountry camping, hiking, mountain-biking and cross-country skiing. He divides Kananaskis Country into areas which he then describes in full detail, with both text, full colour maps and stunning photographs, most of which he took himself.

I enjoyed the book immensely and would recommend it to anyone who plans a visit to southern Alberta's Kananaskis Country.

EXCELLENT PEOPLE BOOK

Anne Cameron writes a good story! The people are very "real".., and the story line is intersting. I read this a few years back.., and am happy to get a chance to buy it (loaned it out and it was never returned).I look forward to reading it again. If you liked "Bastard Out of Carolina" or "Snow On The Pines".., this novel will keep your interest. Thanks, Ms. Cameron.

Storyline ....

Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "Deadly secrets ... beloved enemy ... Lord Nicholas Spencer feared no man. Empowered by King Henry's royal night, he set out to uphold the kings justice. Wiping out a nest of pernicious smugglers would be no trouble for his stalwart troop. As for himself, he longed to come face-to-face with the brawny seaman rumored to be their leader .... Widowed Rosalind Barlow plotted to win at a man's game. By day, she ran a quiet inn; by night, she defiantly captained a band of smugglers. Rosalind had sworn to outfox the king's man, only to find her woman's heart had played her false ... into the arms of her enemy."

Old...and FUN!

Review Date: 2005-03-11
This 1968 book geared to those involved in women's clubs is not only fun to read, it still offers lots of good, solid information. Topics cover everything from why clubs are important to naming the club, planning meetings, publicity, officers, fund raising, engaging speakers, and on and on. Dated of course, but worth the reading. Oh, the clever drawings alone are worth finding this book. And it would be a hoot to use for discussions at your next "club" meeting.

I really loved reading this. Firstly, it was very well written. It also is a good example of the political applications of linguistic analysis, like preferred and dispreferred responses in the issue of consent and rape, or perfomatives, gender and the idea of the authentic self. In addition to the high brow intellectual stuff, to make their points they also brings in some juicy fun things like phone sex, sadomasochism, polari and even the movie "When Harry Met Sally."
