I'll have to replace the tapes soon!Review Date: 1999-10-14
However, this editing decision makes total sense. The essays really shine on their own merit, even more so when read by Julia. I've played them over and over again: in the car while commuting to my first graduate class in eleven years, at home to bookend my day-- anywhere I can.
For those who are looking for more specific books on the writer's craft-- they're out there. Cameron tells you at the very beginning of the book/audiotape that this book is something different.
It's inspired me to revisit the Artist's Way routines of Morning Pages and Artist Dates. They make more sense this time around, somehow; the descriptions seem more specific, pared down to the necessary. And they're already making a difference in my dual lives as writer and musician.
I can't recommend this book enough, nor the tapes. Julia: thank you, again. I'm back on track.

Sailing Away From WinterReview Date: 2008-03-04
After reading the first page of Sailing Away From Winter I immediately realized that I had forgotten what a good writer Silver Donald Cameron is. Unlike many sailing adventure books, Cameron shies away from writing a glorified log book but rather makes the reader feel that he is in the cockpit of "Magnus" and experiences the joys of sailing in a fair wind on a sunny day to the unending frustration of a finicky and somewhat unreliable diesel engine that is maintained by a bilge dwelling scurvy crew of evil Norwegian trolls.
While slipping southwards from his homeport of D'Escousse, Silver Donald makes port in such historic Nova Scotia locales as Canso, Halifax, Lunenburg and Yarmouth and then onward to crossing the Bay of Fundy and entering our "beloved" neighbour, the United States of America. Here we learn that like most Canadians, not many Americans on the New England Coast are fans of President George W. Bush as evidenced by many bumper stickers "Needed: One florist to send two Bushes to Iraq"
One common thread in Cameron's many works is his love affair with Cape Breton. During the entire southward voyage Magnus pursues long time friend and fellow Cape Bretoner's Jim and Carol-Anne Organ, of Port Hawkesbury, aboard Seaduction. In the Abaco's the crews of the two Cape Breton vessels rendezvous and share many colourful yarns after cruising more than 3000 miles away from their beloved island. If there's one thing about Cape Bretoner's as the song goes "One thing I know wherever I go there's always friends from back home".
From a sailor's perspective I found that Sailing Away From Winter can be used as a reference book for those of us planning to navigate the Intracoastal Waterway while keeping company with the family pet, a travel guide of good marinas along the ICW, and maybe most importantly a guide for diesel engine repair. As any seasoned cruiser knows: The sailing is the easy part of the cruise, it's knowing how to fix things that really count. Well done Captain.

"You'll find the treasure below the Sail, under the Compass, and beneath the Keel"Review Date: 2006-10-18
Basically you look over Duncan's shoulder while he and Helle investigate the shipwrecks and work out the clues to find the treasure. That search is the narrative thread for this engaging book illustrated by Cameron with text by Richard Platt, but that serves as a context for telling young readers all about what professional divers do when they check out shipwrecks. We get to learn about the symbols and abbreviations used on Admiralty charts, a swimming robot named "Nemo," star gazing, compass deviations, sailor's knots, and the tropical fish of the Coral Sea & Great Barrier Reef. The text is printed like it is handwritten and is accompanied by photographs, drawings, and various charts and diagrams. If you are familiar with publications from DK then you will not be surprised at how "Shipwreck Detective" has wall-to-wall illustrations on each two-page spread, although the balance is more towards the drawings by Cameron than the photographs of museum treasures we usually find in their books.
Those of you who want to skip ahead to the end of the book to find out the solution to the mystery and the location of the treasure will be bitterly, but appropriately, disappointed, because the answer is not there. Duncan succeeds and there is a giant clue when you get to the end, but to find out if you were right you have to go check out a special DK website for the book (I was actually reminded of the end of "The Da Vinci Code," which would be another clue that will be lost on most readers). The front cover is thick enough to include the a compass, but it also helps make the book something of a writing table when it is open, so this books is especially suited for long car trips. Cameron and Platt have come up with something that stacks up pretty well against computer games, especially in the education department. Plus Platt obviously tries to make this as much of a hands on experience as he can, short of having the readers get into a wet suit and start making dives out in the real world. So even once the mystery is solved (or you give up the hunt), you can still enjoy reading about the life of professional divers.
Lots of fun with a childReview Date: 2006-11-30
Read this book with a child. Learn about scuba and wreck diving, history and archaeology. Solve a mystery. This is wonderful, educational fun for a smart 8 year old, or a typical 10+ year old. Do it together, you'll both benefit.

I love listening to Ms. Cameron with her down-to-earth sensibilities toward writers and writing. There's no pretense as she shares stories and encouragement from her own writing life.
I especially enjoy the story she tells of the famous writer she invited to a dinner party who believes only those who truly suffer for the art can be real writers. He further humiliated Ms. Cameron at her dinner party while she still maintained that as exalted as he is now, even he began like every other writer.
This wonderful audio set by Cameron is very helpful and encouraging in gaining perspective and realizing that yes, we all have this inalienable right of self-expression - the right to write.
