This is the best book I have found for American beginners. My musical education is heavily weighted in the western classical style, which makes it difficult for me to appreciate much of Arabic music. My ears tend not to hear what is being played. They hear what they think is the equivalent in western scale systems. I do not have the CD to this book, which is prabably a shame. Even so, Arabic musical vocabulary is so important that I benefit immensely from reading the text. The print is large, well formated, adequately cross-referenced, and I understand it. It is supplemental to lessons. The only quibble is possibly that the book does contain more material. But then it would not be a beginner's book.

For those of us who have learned to begin our days with morning pages, this calendar provides little reminders of the "artist's way" journey. While very much an engagement calendar, it does not scream "DO THIS NOW." Instead, it gently suggests a creative task for the week. This is a gorgeous calendar that will serve well, whether you've read The Artist's Way or not. I plan to buy one every year as long as they are available.
Inspirational and beautiful.

I have not read the Artist's Way, but you don't have to in order to become inspired. Each month and each week has a meditation or exercise to become more creative or more in tune with your spiritual side. The graphics are lovely, the paperstock is of the finest quality, and there is plenty of room to enter your engagements. I am very picky about my engagement calendars since I have to live w/ it for a year... this is one which will become a favorite for sure!

I was worried when I purchased the refill that it would be missing what came with the original "Bad Girl's Power Planner". The refill, however, is perfect and comes complete with an additional "Whirlwind Social Calendar", "Personal Posse" pages, "To-Do/To Don't Lists", "Naughty Notes" and even includes more stickers. If you're happy with your bad girl power planner and want to continue using it, order this refill. The only downside is you must date all of the calendar weeks, just like you do with the original power planner. This of course can be a positive, since you can begin your calendar on any day of the year.

Life With Beethoven.....

"...I write, Uncle, because something terrible has happened. A madman has moved into our house." Young Christoph can't believe his family's misfortune with their new boarder. Mr Beethoven has rented the upstairs rooms, and the terrible noises begin at dawn. There's loud pounding and howling, stomping and crashing. Beethoven has four pianos, some without legs sitting right on the floor so that he can "hear" the vibrations of his music. His room is a mess, papers scattered everywhere, dirty dishes and clothes on every surface, and he writes on the walls. He walks the streets humming and growling, and waving his arms. Christoph is mortified, angry, and embarrassed as he asks his uncle..."I beg you to tell my mother to send Mr Beethoven away." But as the months and then years go by, Christoph's letters begin to change. He develops compassion and tolerance for this eccentric musical genius who lives upstairs, that slowly turns into respect, admiration, and true friendship..... Barbara Nichol and Scott Cameron have authored a creative and inventive story, written as correspondence between uncle and nephew, that combines history, music, and actual events during the three years Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony in Vienna. Christoph's intriguing and compelling letters are full of drama and tension as he tells his uncle what it's like to live with the deaf and tormented composer. His uncle, also a musician, writes back giving Christoph insight and understanding into Beethoven's life and times and famous temper. Ms Nichol's engaging and entertaining text is spellbinding and enhanced by Mr Cameron's dark, lush oil paintings. Together word and art transport you back to the 1820s, and allows the reader to spy on Beethoven as he works. Perfect for youngsters 8-12, Beethoven Lives Upstairs is an evocative and fascinating adventure about a remarkable composer that is sure to whet the appetite of budding musicians, and send them looking for more.

A young Viennese boy named Christoph happens to have the greatest composer who ever lived as a boarder in his mother's house. Set in 1822, this nice re-telling of factual events in the last year of Beethoven's life has introduced millions to the softer side of a musical god too often portrayed as stern and cold. Yes, there really was a Christoph, and Beethoven shared his home about the time of the composition of the Ninth Symphony, possibly humankind's musical high-point. In fact many real life occurrences came to pass just as Ms. Nichol's book tells. Beethoven Lives Upstairs is easy to read and hard to forget, and is a positive tale almost anyone should find likable.

This book is so good I never did any of the homework for the class it was for, only studied the night before each test, and pulled an honest-to-God straight A in the class. But this is calculus. If the text weren't so damn expensive I would have burned it in effigy. The book has nice pictures and the business-based questions are mind-numbingly easy. The science questions blow. If you don't like science, this will re-affirm your feelings. And don't forget that the answers to the odd problems are in the back. Just the answers though, but they still help. Supposedly this book has a suppliment and a CD to it, but I never monkeyed around with that. Didn't even purchase it, come to think of it...

This review concerns the volume of the Cambridge Ancient history covering 425-600.
This was a very readable book, that I have just completed. I read about eighty percent of it, only skipping or skimmimg a few sections. Admittedly, this would not make a good introductory book, and probably not even a good second book, on the period, but if you are interested in the period and have a working knowledge of it, I am sure you will find much of interest. The book begins with an evocative 150 pages or so of narrative historical overview, with the latest interpretations of chronology. Some of this material is then covered in a more thematic way, and also in an area-by-area manner, later in the book. There are also many sections on various social aspects. One such that I gained much from was the one on education. Interestingly, there was no separate section on women. The bibliography is 100 pages long, so the reading matter itself is about 1000 pages. The book was worth the money to me.

Being an armchair historian, I found this work to be highly readable and entertaining. The bibliography is exhaustive (about 100 pages), as one might expect, and their are numerous maps and genealogy tables. Despite numerous authors, it does not backtrack nor contradict itself. For a scholarly work, it is impressive for its contribution, compactness (yes, even at 1,000 pages, it could have been 1,000 more) and ease of reading.
That said, it's not for those unfamiliar with the "story" of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. It more or less assumes you're quite familiar with Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Plutarch, et al, and various long standing controversies in interpretation. So if you've read a few books on the subject, you'll be quite comfortable with this work. If you've read the Routledge and Yale Press Imperial Biography series, then this work helps with context, providing the latest (and perhaps alternative) views on current scholarship.
Don't let the price scare you off. It's well worth several other books one might consider, combined.

Townsend's impact on Christian missions and even on language translations generally cannot be appreciated without reading more about; try this title.

The man responsible for bringing God's word tp the World's diverse languages was a missionary to Mexico. This true story of Cameron Townsend is well-writen by Janet and Geoff Benge. Cameron goes through to tough times but with God's help he gets through them. In one incident he is giving out Bible tracks. A Cakchiquel man became indignant when Cameron offered him a track in Spanish. "Do you have any in Cakchiquel?" he asked.
"There are none, I'm sorry," replied Cameron.
"Well," retorted the man, "if your God is so great, why can't he speak my language?"
So in that one moment, Cameron Towmnsend understood that God called him to translate the Bible into the language into the language of his Guatemalan friends. Does He get caught for translating the Bible? Read it and find out!

What impressed me most about the book was how much information was packed into this short biography of Cameron Palmer, the Palmer family, and the history of Cameron's Inn.
This is must reading for anyone interested in becoming a restaurateur, likes to read about family ventures, is an Anglophile, or just anyone who loves reading. There are even plenty of pictures & cartoons inside, for those who don't enjoy reading.
Throughout the humor-filled story, you can learn about some of the landmarks and history of Half Moon Bay and the Coastside community, as well as read about a family that is quite extraordinary, willing to do anything for each other, including....well, I won't say anymore, don't want to give it away.

Cameron has been a friend of mine for roughly 6 years and I have always enjoyed his mastery of the oud, ney, and voice in Middle-eastern music.
I told him that I wanted to learn more and he suggested I study this book.
It is, by far, the best source of the kind of information I was looking for that I have yet encountered. Since studying this book my level of playing has grown exponentially!
