I first read this book in 7th grade, 30 years ago. I have read it at least 10 more times since. A mystery/adventure tale set in the Canadian arctic. Plenty of action and suspense. I highly recommend it for the teenage boy who does not like to read. You just might make a reader of him. It worked for me.

Island at the Top of the World was one of the first books I read as a kid, and it really captured my imagination. A great adventure story with an airship that goes to the Arctic in search of ambergris, the stuff in sperm whales they use in perfume. The subplot has a guy searching for his long lost brother if I recall right. Anyway it's great for kids and someday I hope to see the Disney film.

If you like Jules Verne, Ian Fleming, or even Clive Cussler, you should like this novel. It made for fast reading in an adventurous way.

Although I have not seen the movie, the novel was descriptive enough that I feel I almost did.

Light hearted pre-techno-thriller reading.

Most photographs here were made in ca. 1870. Looking through the book, I imagine that at that time photography was still so new, so unprecedented, that no one yet had idea of what portrait photography was to become. An art? Or a detailed recording of what the eye perceives? In this ambiguity, Julia Margaret Cameron shows herself in this volume to be great artist, a portrait photographer second to none. In the faces of her women, I can see stories and history as recorded nowhere else.

Most notable is the series of images of Julia Jackson. (She also appears on the front and back covers.) One can see her life evolve over the time span of the photos. These images become even more interesting upon learning she was mother of Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf. So here at last is the real Mrs. Ramsey.

This amazing book is well worth the investment. These photos still have the power to knock one over the head with their dizzying beauty. Too often people look to the men who made up the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood for an ideal of the Victorian woman. For a fresh look, one should explore Victoriana through the eyes of the women themselves. Cameron's photography is the perfect counterpart to Christina Rosetti's poetry. Enjoy.

A book to inspire

Review Date: 2005-10-03
This is a great book, telling the story of a man who has inspired generations of doctors (and non-doctors) to try to cure more than just human disease. Norman Bethune, whose life this book describes, was a multifaceted man, for whom the adjective "great" would be quite appropriate. He was a surgeon, a health activist, a communist, a poet, a painter, a journalist and above all a great human being. This book describes his early life, his battle against tuberculosis, against fascism and all those who injure other human beings. Quoting his speeches, his newspaper articles and his journal extensively, the book informs and inspires and should be a must read for everyone who aspires to be a doctor or just loves humanity.

Norm Bethune -- Genius combined with relentless effort.

Review Date: 2005-03-26
There are simple people and there are complicated people. Norm Bethune was definitely of the latter strain. Independent, erratic, gifted, persistent-ever searching for the next direction, or "mission."

His parents were great admirers of D.L. Moody. His father was a pastor at various small towns throughout Ontario, Canada, and his mother was a missionary. Bethune himself didn't seem to have the same interest as his parents in the things of God. But his mother's missionary fervor was obviously a very prominent influence in his life.

His genius as a surgeon first emerged when he contracted tuberculosis and decided that he must prepare to die. He encouraged his wife to divorce him, and he went to a sanitarium. But once he got there, he found the boredom of waiting to die was more tortuous than the illness itself, and he began to research the disease. His fortunes changed drastically when he happened upon a book describing a new procedure which involved removing part of the ribs to collapse an ailing lung. This procedure was new-only about a year old, but Bethune was interested. He was determined to be a beneficiary of this new innovation, and this determination eventually led to his recovery. It was 1927.

After his recovery, he became a thoracic surgeon. But he was frustrated by the numbers of indigent patients who did not get timely treatment because they were too poor. His preoccupation with, an concern for the "underdogs" of the world eventually led him to Spain, where he got involved in the Spanish civil war, working with the forces battling Franco. This experience had a profound effect on his thinking. He joined the Communist Party, and campaigned for support for the resistance forces.

But the heart of this book really begins when Dr. Bethune goes to China. His experiences as a battlefield surgeon make fascinating reading. He was hot-tempered and impatient, but his decision to use his genius as a surgeon to help the guerrilla fighters has given us a story well worth the reading. Edison said that "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." Well, I don't know about the actual percentages, but it is clear that Bethune's life had a good dose of both. He was not only a physician, he was an inventor. He invented 12 different surgical instruments, and published 14 articles outlining his innovations in surgical technique. He was very creative, and a very, very hard worker. And he would not tolerate incompetence. He was vehement almost to the point of violence in his determination to give the best possible treatment to the wounded. The descriptions of battlefield surgery in this book are sometimes painful to read, but very, very compelling.

But I am not a medical person. My primary interest in this book stems from my interest in history. There are several ways that this book is helpful in that area. First of all, the story takes place during the Sino-Japanese war, a time in which Jiang jieshi got a lot of criticism from the Americans because of his refusal to fight the Japanese. Jiang jieshi always said, "The Japanese are a disease of the skin. The Communists are a disease of the heart." Although, he certainly did not want the Japanese to overrun China, he was very hesitant to expend men and resources against what he saw as a major enemy of the Communist armies, which he despised. He obviously felt that if he burned himself out fighting the Japanese, he would make it that much easier for the Communists to take over. That being the case, I have always wondered how much the Communists concentrated on fighting the Japanese themselves. This book answers that question. The wounds Bethune treated were inflicted by the Japanese. And the book gives weight to the idea that perhaps Jiang jie shi's approach backfired, because his refusal to fight the Japanese caused the Chinese people to lose respect for him.

Bethune died of septicemia in November of 1939. In her forward to the book, Soong Ching ling makes much of the charge that his death was due to the fact that the Guomindang refused to let the medicine through. I don't know about that. But it is terribly frustrating to read a story like this, because it is clear that a simple antibiotic could have saved him, as well as many other soldiers he would have been able to save if he had lived.

Finally, Bethune's life had a unique influence on history in a way that I am sure he never could have anticipated. During the days before the opening of China, which began with Nixon's visit in 1972, very few countries had any relationship at all with China. But Canada was a notable exception. Mao and others in China always viewed Canada in a positive light, and much of this was due to the overwhelming tendency to identify Canada with Dr. Norman Bethune, who is a national hero in China.

This is a book that should be on the essential reading list for those planning a career in medicine (surgery). It is truly inspiring, and it provides an interesting history of the early years of thoracic surgery, transfusion medicine, and humanitarian committment. I recommend those who have the opportunity to visit the Bethune Peace Hospital in China, about a two hour drive from Beijing. The Bethune Museum there is wonderful.

I remember this story from my mother reading it to me a s a child and again reading it as a highschool student. I gave me hope that one person can make a difference. That we can do things to help people not for fame and fortune but because people need our help and we have the expertise to help ease their pain and suffering.

Norman bethume was such a man and his story needs to be told again and again. I highly recommend it to anyone who values the efforts of individulas and the love of community.

This review comes from a novice rider. I have been taking weekly lessons for a little over a year -- in English riding. Thus, I think it says something for this book that I read it cover to cover and thoroughly enjoyed it, even though it is western focused.

The book begins by teaching you about horse psychology, horseman psychology, and equipement, then offers advice on selecting a horse, followed by several chapters of advice on riding. After this, about half way through the book, it begins to teach training methods, and chapter by chapter carries you from first putting a halter on the horse all the way through advanced maneuvers and trailer loading.

Each chapter contains many sidebars with extra hints and tips, explanations of the purpose of some of the techniques, and personal anecdotes that reinforce the lessons and demonstrate the importance of them.

If a picture truly is worth a thousand words, then this book contains several extra volumes withing its pages. It is filled with large, color, quality pictures that clearly show the author himself doing the things he teaches.

Craig Cameron teaches natural horsemanship. You won't find advice on striking your horse in this book. One of his mottos is to make "the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard," not painful.

When I do venture into western riding, I will be much better prepared for it by having read this book. I highly recommend it to riders of any discipline, at any level of training. Even if you never ride western and never train a horse of your own, you will benefit from reading this book.

The ample illustrations really help with understanding the concepts and techniques the author has developed. I'm very happy that I have my copy.

The Kentucky frontier in the 1780s is a dangerous place, as Catherine Brant finds out when she is captured by Shawnee Indians in the forests near her home. Taken far from her home, Cat learns the ways of her captors and is adopted into their tribe. At first she longs to return to her family, but then she meets Blue Quail. Blue Quail was born white, but he was captured by Indians at such a young age that he has no memory of his birth family. Feelings of love grow between Cat and Blue Quail, but Cat still believes she will find a way to return home someday. When that time comes, will she be able to convince Blue Quail that his place is with her? I highly recommend this book to teenage girls who enjoy historical romances. It's definitely worth reading if you can find a copy at a library or used book store.

I have thought of this book often ever since I first read it as a child. I couldn't remember the name nor the author but knew it immediately when I came across it recently at the library. I agree with the previous review, Cameron's writing is mystical yet natural. I reread it and was instantly taken to that otherwordly realm full of shadows and possibilities, a place where the natural world and the fantasy world coexist. All of Cameron's books are written with a richness and beauty that challenge the young reader while entertaining her. I recommend any of Cameron's books most enthusiastically.

I fell in love with this book in the fourth grade and still read it periodically. Superstition and magic play a part in this story of a young girl searching for her place in the world. This is not really a fantasy; the plot is very down-to-earth, but Cameron's writing has a mystical feel to it that delights without creating over-imaginative horrors. Excellent for 4th and 5th grade readers, but interesting enough for older readers as well. Definitely a book to remember.

Christian Cameron's writing reminds me very much of Patrick O'Brian. Tyrant is full of rich historical detail and deep relationships between characters. The book is not simply an excuse to race from one battle to the next. Christian is a living history reenactor (and former military officer)and these experiences come through in the vivid depictions of camp life and the relationships that develop between brothers in arms. Tyrant is one of the finest historical fiction novels I have read.

"Tyrant" is the second novel of historical fiction author Christian Cameron ("Washington and Caesar")."Tyrant"'s conquering Alexandrian Age heros-turned-mercenaries for hire find their futures "balanced on the knife's edge", when every decision could force a meeting of the Fates. Christian Cameron has embued his self-reflective characters with an extraordinary sense of identity, loyalty and religious reverance. We ride with the Scythians and Slavic peoples as they battle for the "sea of grass" of their homelands, and we stand at the firesides of the citizenless band of Greeks who must set aside their Homeric ideals to ally with unlikely compatriots. "Tyrant" is a rewarding read that brings mysticism, military strategy, ever-shifting cultural boundaries, and halting romance together in an immersive, richy detailed novel.

Got ahold of a British copy (not released here yet) - As with my previous fave by this author (_Washington and Caesar_) love the campaign feel of the story - the telling little details and the companionable interrelationships between leader and follower. The writing is fast paced and easy to gulp down. I am not particularly knowledgeable about the period, but was fascinated by the many references and the interplay of cultures. Loved the Scythians and the Spartan Philokles too. I really prefer books like this to have a glossary of names and pronunciations. Was a little disappointed that one of the relationships did not more explicitly (wink wink) resolve itself at the end, but the flyleaf says that a second book is in the works!!

This book is used along side the DVD version. It is like nothing you have seend before!
Do people say that you are a good person? Maybe you think you really are good in Gods eyes.
Do you really understand why Jesus had to die for your sin?
Way of the Master Basic training shows you how God sees your sin and how to share your faith without getting into an argument. Do you know someone who is not saved? A mother, father, brother, sister or just a friend? Then this training material is for you. It may even help you to answer those hard questions that come up around the office. WOTM has helped me to share my faith more boldly, but most importantly biblically. The way Jesus did.

A Great Witnessing Tool With a Different Approach

Review Date: 2007-03-29
Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort have teamed up to produce what I think is a great witnessing tool. May authors use the approach that accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life will make you feel happy and fulfilled in this life. Instead, Cameron and Comfort use the Old Testament Law (10 Commandments) to show how EVERYONE at some point and time in their life has broken at least one of the commandments and is danger of God's judgement. Additionally, the emphasis is also on the next life since we will spend far more time in heaven or hell than here on earth.

We had this course taught at our church and the basic class format is as follows: go over what we learned from the previous week's assignment, watch the DVD that goes with the book, discuss the DVD, and go over next week's assignment.

The book's chapters are as follows:

1. Cultivating Compassion for the Lost.
2. Discovering Hell's Best Kept Secret.
3. Learning to Overcome Fear.
4. Practicing What You Preach.
5. Crafting the Message.
6. Answering the Top Ten Questions.
7. Exposing the Myth of the Modern Message.
8. Spreading Your Wings.

If you or your church are looking for another witnessing tool, this is an excellent one to consider.

Enjoy reading the book and be challenged. Highly recommended!

This is really a great product. I had read a commentary by Ray Comfort and his approach to evangelism online and I bought this book and cds after investigating his website. What a powerful and useful approach to those who need to hear the message of Christ. I bought this along with Ray's book as a kit. This CD kit is an 8-part series on "The Way of the Master" that is basically the video series on Biblical Evangelism in sound-only form. It is a real bargin, although I would invest in the videos if I was teaching this to a class. It thoroughly walks you through breaking down the barriers that people have to hearing someone share their faith and it helps you to break down your own fears in sharing your faith. I look at this as another great tool that God is providing to reach people for Him. I strongly recommend this to anyone who feels the fire within but is worried about how to reach those around them for Christ.

Great, quick encouragement to share yoour faith Biblically & effectively the way Jesus did. These "minutes" are also very convicting for those who might not be sharing their faith as commanded. You can never go wrong with anything by Ray Comfort.

Another excellent resource from The Way of the Master

When I first bought this book I wasn't sure how Ray and Kirk were going to be able to make good devotions that were only one minute long, but I am very happy to say they have done an incredible job. `The Way of the Master Minute' is quick, very motivating, and convicting (even if you do share your faith, you will be challenged to do it more). A must have for any Christian who has (or doesn't have) a passion to reach the lost.

Good motivation
