Final Gifts is a thorough look at what to expect and prepare for with a loved one who is dying. Advice on how to deal with situations is so helpful. It gave me comfort in understanding the process and removed my anxiety on situations I was experiencing and did not know how to deal with. This book was so helpful in making my loved one comfortable as they were declining. I highly recommend Final Gift and have given the book to friends who are experiencing the same situation.

For anyone who works with Hospice,or the elderly, or who have family members on hospice care, it is an invaluable book. To learn about the communications of a dying person, and their needs to die in peace, it can radically transform the dying experience for the person and their loved ones from one of sadness to one of sacred beauty. Not to read it, could mean missing out on the important signs our loved ones give us, as they are leaving us or hinder our understanding of what they are trying to convey. I highly recommend this book.

I read this book years ago when faced with my father in law's illness. Not knowing we would be burying all four parents within four years of his death. Very valuable read for anyone going through this end of life process. I bought these copies for friends.

I found this read to be heart felt, emotional, and real. Even though I have never know anyone myself who has had an eating disorder, I related to it simply by the struggles of raising children. When our children are born, they don't come with a book on how to raise them, we just go with the flow and do the best we can. Normal is hard enough, but Mary went the extra mile with blinders on and never gave up on her family. Now that's real. Wrinkles on the Heart is for anyone. To actually read a book (journal) written by a mother, and feel every emotion that a person can feel was amazing. Thank you Mary for sharing your story to help anyone dealing with an eating disorder and the insight of just raising children and not giving up.

Anorexia Nervosa ---- A Chronicle of the Battle for a Life

First, let me say that I have never had any first-hand experience with this condition, so this story was a real eye-opener for me. I found this to be a riveting story of determination, courage and love. It is the moving and true story of a family's struggle to help their daughter overcome anorexia. This book details the mother's daily struggles to understand and support her daughter while trying to continue her role as a wife and a mother to three other children. The reader will be drawn into the story of this terrible battle with its many ups and downs. Father and mother often disagreed on the right approach to this problem in their family and even the medical professionals didn't always have the right answers. Mary Fleming Callaghan tells her story through a series of letters written to her uncle and through diary entries.
The chronicle of a family's struggle to overcome this threat to the life of a beloved daughter should be read by everyone who is experiencing this problem with a family member. And, it should be required reading by every medical professional who deals with this frightening disorder.

`Wrinkles on the Heart' by Mary Callaghan is a godsend for all parents of children with anorexia. It is a poignant, immensely readable book, written with enviable honesty. (It was a catharsis for being able to remember how much of a brat my own my beloved daughter, who also suffers from anorexia, was at the beginning of her illness.)

All the stages of Mary's family and her daughter's plight were identical to ours, not the details, but the frustration, anger and helplessness that accompany the illness or behaviour or whatever it may be. The difficulties of our own struggle and quest for appropriate support, in both England and in France (medical help is more efficient and readily available in the latter country) were compounded by vastly different, sometimes conflicting, approaches and attitudes. Only when I had become thoroughly confused by the different psychiatrists and their sometimes stupendously inhuman treatment, did I feel I had to take a step back and leave my daughter to take responsibility for her survival and improvement. What a relief to find this is what Mary Callaghan recommends; it was the turning point in her daughter's illness.

Mary Callaghan's book is an ever-present help for suffering parents. And when you finish reading it, there is Mary right on-line willing to help parents with any issues she may not have addressed. A great writer. A great woman. Thank you Mary.

Being an aspiring writer myself, and currently recovering from anorexia, I immediately expected to be critical of this novel. I gained new insight on the chaos and pain I placed my family and loved ones through during my diagnosis, and have a new appreciation for everything that they, my mother in particular, have done for me. The story is passionately and appropriately told. It's difficult for the recovery anorexic to except, but it is also essential. I would recommend it for those suffering or recovering.

Keith from Tucson

We found Mary Callaghan's book,Wrinkles on the Heart, and we ordered it immediately. We didn't expect much since most every book we read on this subject found parents an easy, vulnerable target. I was pleasantly surprised. Wrinkles was a refreshing departure from the many academic volumes and their unfair conclusions. The Callaghans had walked the same road as we were now on, and Mary was able to put those agonizing struggles into words.

After reading Wrinkles I was struck by a surprising reality. The suggestions Mary makes in her narrative could also be applied to other cases of aberrant teenage behavior, situations that had nothing whatsoever to do with an eating disorder. That perception alone encouraged me to write this review.

I could relate to George's frustration with Kathleen. My daughter's stubborn refusal to listen to reason drove me crazy, just as it had for George. My wife seemed able to handle the stress better than I simply because she could talk to her friends about it, whereas I found that difficult to do. This caused disagreements and tension between us, just as it had for the Callaghans.

Mary addressed these kinds of issues in her book which made me feel that she understood how I was feeling. She and George didn't agree but they both cared for and agonized over Kathleen's welfare. Their approaches were diametrically opposed, but they were as one in their love for her. This was so close to our own scenario that it was almost eerie.

Thank you, Mary. You helped us see that we were not so strange after all, that we were just like thousands of other parents looking for solutions to an alarming and life-threatening problem before it was too late.

I whole-heartedly recommend Wrinkles on the Heart to all parents and families who are faced with similar life and death struggles, no matter what the source of those struggles might be.

One side-effect of the common lectionary used by Catholics, Episcopaleans, Lutheran, and various mainstream Protestant churches is the development of some excellent lectionary based resources. (A lectionary contains the Biblical readings for a given Sunday).

This series of three volumes for the three year lectionary cycle (each year concentrates on a synoptic Gospel - Matthew, Mark or Luke) contains music, poetry, art, etc. that in some way reflect on the Scripture for a given Sunday. The volumes are carefully multicultural.

An example: for the first Sunday in Advent, there are poems by Philipp Nicolai with Carl P. Daw Jr, and Alberto Taule; a photo of a cross of the community by the artisans of La Palma, El Salvador; a responsory reading by Miriam Therese Winter; and a painting by Glen Strock.

Each Sunday is equally diverse. You should always be able to find something that meets your needs and/or challenges you to reconsider your needs. Highly recommended.

This is a thick soft cover art book that accompanies Biblical passages with art objects - paintings, sculptures from all cultures, Italian Renaissance to Modern Chinese water-colour that attempts to IMAGE the WORD - the gospel, and puts the love of Jesus in Christianity into a non-preachy, very emotionally and aesthetically moving document that appeals to the modern, intellectual, sophisticated, sensitive, cultured but atheist reader. It makes the Bible come alive in a fantasy of visual ecstasy. A marvellous gift for those who are hurting from a lack of understanding God's love. A spiritually soothing gift in a coffee-table book format.

That Summer in Paris by Morley Callaghan is another version of Hemingway in Paris which is probably a lot closer to the truth.

If you need or want to know the truth, read this book. Hemingway sure made a seductive myth about himself. We don't fault him for improving on the truth. The Hemingway version is fun to read but this one is fun too.

By the way, Callaghan wrote an outstanding short story called "Luke Baldwin's Vow." You can see why Hemingway thought highly of him.

*the* must-read literary memoir of Paris in the 1920s

Review Date: 2003-12-21
Canadian writer Morley Callaghan (1903-1990) published 16 novels and more than 100 works of short fiction, and he was one of the first Canadian authors to make his living solely from his craft. Callaghan believed in capturing the bare truth and honest emotional content of people's lives, so his prose shuns stylistic busyness. Edmund Wilson called him "the most unjustly neglected novelist in the English-speaking world," and Maxwell Perkins called him the world's best short story writer.

THAT SUMMER IN PARIS, as a memoir of Paris in the 20s, is every bit as engaging a book, if more limited in scope, as Hemingway's A MOVEABLE FEAST. The book begins with Callaghan's inspiring story of meeting Hemingway while working on the same paper in Toronto--at the time Callaghan was in his early 20s (still in college), and Hemingway was a couple years older. Hemingway had temporarily left Paris and was in town working for the paper to provide his wife Hadley with the benefits of Toronto hospitals during childbirth. Hemingway quickly became a sort of literary patron for Callaghan and, when he returned to Europe, took Callaghan's short stories with him and passed them around Paris. Fitzgerald became enthusiastic about Callaghan's work and also began championing him with Paris and New York publishers. After Callaghan published 2 books of fiction (in no small part due to the help of his "Paris friends"), Callaghan finally made his own visit, with his wife, to Paris in 1929. The anecdotes he recounts are simply marvelous, and I can't recommend the book highly enough. Boxing matches with Hemingway, Fitzgerald's drunken histrionics, a strange evening with Joyce and a phonograph... it's priceless stuff.

Timing is everything

They say that timing is everything and the fact that this particular writer just happened to be sitting on the Boulevard Montparnasse on the right evening of the right year, means we have a further insight into the lives of those Paris expatriates, Hemingway and Fitzgerald and others. At the same time, this may be an opportunity for some people to discover Morley Callaghan, who is a very fine writer in his own right. His life ran parallel to Hemingway's for some time, as they met in Toronto and later in Paris and remained friends thereafter, even if they saw each other only rarely. In a sense, he is just the person to give us a penetrating look behind the legends that were being created in the cafés and bars of the ville lumière at the end of the thirties. This is a delightful book as well; Callaghan is nobody's fool, which means he's not writing for the mundane reasons that might otherwise be expected, and you can trust him. He is painting a portrait of a world teetering on the very brink (it is the summer of 1929), and in his own artful way, he has succeeded in giving us a rare glimpse into the ill-lit streets and nightclubs just before it all fades away into the decade of hopelessness that followed. It's well worth finding this book if you can - it's a little gem.

What a great book. The author just oozes old timey experience. He didn't dumb down the material. He does cover some detail of XDR and RPC, which I find rather welcome actually. Other prerequisites are expected to be met before reading the book which delves into all kinds of aspects about NFS.

This fine Addison-Wesley tome is an excellently welcome reference right alongside the works of Stevens, etc. in my library.

Amazon lists this as paperback-only, but I delightedly lucked into a hardbound copy from a used marketplace seller. Hooray!

As with all the books in the "Illustrated" series this book isn't a tutorial and it doesn't hold your hand... never the less, if your an experienced admin who's spent years with NFS but just never quite felt like you and NFS understood each other then this is the book for you.

The book is two things... on one hand each chapter begins with a short introduction about a protocol and with it a fascinating history lesson. The rest of the chapter covers the gory details. The history lesson and insights scattered throughout the text shed light on why NFSv2/3 became the mess that we all know and love. NFS is simple on the outside, but if you really stop and think about it... why are there all those protocols, I mean, why do we need a damn port mapping daemon just to keep it all straight!? The fairy tale unfolds throughout the book and finally, I'm glad to say, I think I understand NFSv2/3's sorted past and I'm happy to say I forgive her.

If you've looked at NFSv4 but, deep down, just don't really see the point... I mean, NFSv3 has been around, works everywhere... well, this is the book thats going to make you realize just how desperately we've needed NFSv4 and you'll never want to go back.

Sure, you can read the RFE as other reviewers have suggested, but thats not what your buying here... your buying the Deluxe Behind the Scenes Edition with a commentary that, well, illustrates the whole thing.

This book is getting harder and harder to find. Buy it, have it on your shelf. Its a quick read and an invaluable reference.

This is a very readable and well organized book on NFS. The information is presented such that a reader could read the book cover to cover and gain a detailed understanding of RPC, NFSv2, NFSv3, and related protocols such lock manager and mount. It may and should also be used as a reference for those already familiar with NFS. The one missing part is details of rquota. Otherwise, it is perfect. I highly recommend this book to anyone working on NFS implementations. It is a lot more user friendly than the RFC!

I saw this book in [local store] and had to have it. For anyone interested in the nitty gritty details of NFS this book is a must! The writer provides a comprehensive and rich discussion of every aspect of NFS 2 and 3 which many environments are still implementing today. Also the writer provides a very detailed discussion of the relationship between lockd and statd and discusses mountd and nfsd in great detail also. For Unix admins who want to become more intimate with NFS I think this is a great resource.

Southern California private investigator Delilah West would rather confront a serial killer holding a weapon to her head than the emotional problems caused by her falling in love with developer Erik Lundstrom. Even the attack at the mall by a maniac shooting people does not affect Delilah (who anonymously took out the crazed killer) as much as her heart beating for the wealthy Orange County businessman.

Erik desperately wants to get closer to Delilah, but realizes that before that can happen two barriers must be torn down. First, his teenage daughter Nikki must accept the new woman in his life. Second, his beloved must listen to her heart. To that end, Nikki and Delilah go out together, but soon are embroiled in a kidnapping in which they are the abductees. It is up to the hard boiled detective to find a way to save not only her life, but the life of the daughter of her beloved.

Though this reviewer has not had the opportunity to read all six Delilah West mysteries (having read four of them), the series remaisn one of the better female private investigative collections on the market today. In her latest entry, DOWN FOR THE COUNT, Delilah is a beautiful conflicting mix of emotions that makes her seem so poignantly human and thereby, stir readers' interest. The story line is at time humorous and at other times very hard-boiled. The dichotomy not only works well, it adds to the humanization of all the characters. Maxine O'Callaghan continues to provide strong detective fiction that feel so real.

"Down for the Count" is fast-paced and exciting, the kind of book that you literally won't want to put down. Delilah seems so real that you will feel as though you are experiencing her misadventures right along with her.

The book is wonderfully plotted and filled with interesting (and, in some cases, menacing)supporting characters. Men and women will enjoy this book!

I encourage readers to look for the other books in the Delilah West series, as well as the two books about Anne Menlo.

Delilah West is a PI in Santa Ana, California. She's single but involved with Erik Lundstrom, a rich, sexy man who wants her to get to know Nicky, his teenage daughter better. They take an instant dislike to each other but are forced into a lunch date.

On the way to the restaurant, Nicky and Delilah are kidnapped and they have to learn how to trust each other and work together to survive. Delilah is eventually let free but Nicky is held for ransom. Delilah knows that Nicky was left with neough food for only a few more days.

The second part of the book is about her struggle to figure out who has kidnapped Nicky and why so she can be rescued.

Delilah is a very likable character. She is honest about her shortcomings and has a sense of humor. But she is also able to be tough when she has to be and to accept the consequences.

There is very good character development between Delilah, Nicky and Erik. It has a twist at the end which makes you wish there was at least one more chapter.

This is the 6th in the series and there definitely will be a 7th.

Simply stated, every newly diagnosed diabetic should read and would substantially benefit from "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book" which is the collaborative work of clinical psychologist Jennifer A. Gregg (Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, San Jose State University, San Jose, California), Glenn M. Callaghan (Professor of Psychology, San Jose State University), and Steven C. Hayes (University of Nevada Foundation Professor of Psychology, University of Nevada, Reno). The life-style changes that a diabetes diagnosis compels is often daunting and very difficult to sustain until and unless the diabetics are able to face their fears, voice their concerns, and maintain the changes in their diets, activity levels, and medical services required for a long and healthy life. The psychology, the motivation, the mental management techniques that must go along with changes in diet, medication schedules, and exercise programs are fundamental and precisely the 'how to' information and inspiration provided by "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book". No personal diabetes reading list or community library Health & Medicine reference collection should be without a copy of "The Diabetes Lifestyle Book".

It teaches Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles to help people with diabetes come to grips with all the emotions involved with living with diabetes. There's also a lot of good information about the condition itself.

I highly recommend this book. I was already familiar with ACT before I read it, but the author does a fine job of teaching some basic ACT concepts. If you're a diabetic, please buy this book! Thank you.

...and he finally succeeded.
Being enormously under pressure by the public opinion, Chris Mullin, Labour MP and journalist, was trying to find the truth about what had happened on November 21st, 1974, when IRA-bombs exploded in zwo Birmingham pubs and killed 21 people.
Six innocent men, who simply were at the wrong time at the wrong places, were imprisoned and tortured, until they confessed what they had not done. The so called "Birmingham Six" were sentenced for life. Chris Mullin was one of the people who was doubtful about this case and started his own investigations. In the following years he found the truth about the Birmingham bombings, but it took 16 years until the Birmingham Six were released.
This book describes the long and painful way of the six men and Chris Mullins search for the truth, against the resistance by the public opinion, the police and justice. Error of Judgement is more thrilling and exciting than any fictional thriller i've ever read, because every word is real.

This book is written by journalist and British Member of Parliment Chris Mullin and deals with the notorious Birmingham Six case. Mullin was for long in the forefront of those calling for the case to be reopened and arguably did more to procure their eventual release than any lawyer did.

This book is a tale of human error, skulduggery, and incompetence on the part of police, prosecutors, forensic experts and judges at every level and on such a scale that it almost beggars belief. It shows how the appeal process all too often can become a sham with the court not being open-minded to the receipt of new evidence.

Mullin mercilessly exposes how prosecution-minded and malign appellate judges can be when they have a mind not to do something. Attempts to bring a civil action against West Midlands Police for assaults upon the men while in custody provoked the notorious off-the-cuff, but all the more revealing for that, remark by Lord Denning: "Just consider the course of events if this action is allowed to proceed to trial. If the six men fail, it will mean that much time and money will have been expended by many people for no good purpose. If the six men win, it will mean that the police were guilty of perjury, that they were guilty of violence and threats, that the confessions were involuntary and were improperly admitted in evidence and that the convictions were erroneous. That would mean the Home Secretary would either have to recommend they be pardoned or he would have to remit the case to the Court of Appeal. This is such an appalling vista that every sensible person in the land would say: It cannot be right these actions should go any further."

Luckily for the Birmingham Six, Lord Denning's "appalling vista" was eventually realized when all the wrong doing was eventually accepted as having happened.

This book provides an excellent introduction to International Relations through an examination of concise essays concerning such areas as Terrorism, the Cold War, Human Rights and Globalisation among others. For a better understanding of the complexities of world events and to be well informed about historical concepts, this book is an excellent read. The subjects are placed in the broad sweep of history, pointing to relationships that will encourage discursive reading. International Relations - The Key Concepts, will remain the pre-eminent reference work, that in my view will be unsurpassed.

Child psychologist Dr. Anne Menlo lets her feelings of empathy overrule her professional judgement when she agrees to profile the last weeks of Kathleen Grayley's daughter. Kathleen doesn't know what happened to her daughter Rachel, because her estranged husband and his mother kidnapped the girl, taking her out of California to Arizona. The only reason Kathleen's husband called her was to inform her that their daughter and the housekeeper, died in a fire. ........ The grieving mother wants to find out if Rachel was a victim of sexual or physical abuse, but the case takes a criminal turn when the cause of the fire turns out to be arson. This development brings Anne's live-in lover, detective Bern Pagett, into the picture. Bern is decidedly not happy with Anne being involved on a case with him, since the last time the two of them worked together, they almost were killed by a madwoman (SHADOW OF THE CHILD). Bern's fears are warranted because somebody, presumably the same person who killed Rachel, tries to torch their house and kill them. Although they escape, the danger isn't over because there's still a murderer on the loose and Anne won't rest until she fulfills her promise to her client, even it means putting herself in danger once again. ........ This psychological police thriller is so suspense filled that readers will feel like they are stretched to the snapping point. Maxine O'Callaghan uses sleight of hand so well that the audience is constantly misdirected down the wrong path, leaving them think that they solved the story (not!). The finale is unexpected, dramatic yet believable, a combination that makes ONLY IN THE ASHES a top of the line thriller. The loving relationship between the doctor and the police officer fleshes out the characters, making them seem like three dimensional human beings instead of puppet characters. Let us hope another Anne Menlo work is out real soon. ........Harriet Klausner

Intriguing plot and realistic characters make this a winner.

ONLY IN THE ASHES is a great read. The characters of Anne Menlo, the child psychologist, and Bern, the police detective, have a depth and humanity that is rare in mystery fiction.

I was disappointed to learn that there won't be another Anne Menlo book out in the near future. The series possibilities here are endless.

Be sure to read Maxine O'Callaghan's other Menlo novel, SHADOW OF A CHILD, as well as the wonderful Delilah West series.
