The Courthouse And The Depot: A Narrative Guide To Railroad Expansion And Its Impact On Public Architecture In Georgia 1833-1910 by Wilber W. Caldwell is an exhaustive catalogue of 19th century public architecture in Georgia and all the railroad lines that criss-crossed the state during this period. A wealth of Deep South history illustrated throughout with black and white photographs. The Courthouse And The Depot uses the unique framework of architecture to substantially narrate a significant stretch of Georgian state history, and how the coming of the railroad changed everything for the future. A fascinating and superbly presented wealth of information about changing times over a century ago, The Courthouse And The Depot is highly recommended reading for American history, architecture, and railroading reading lists and reference collections.

An essential collection of Georgia architectural history

Mr. Caldwell, an "independent" historian, has provided us an exaustive and accurate compendium of the architectural and social history of Georgia in the 19th century. He has reviewed and cross-referenced the hundreds of sketchy local histories in Georgia and has noted the background and history of the creation of every Georgia county and railroad from 1800-1911, and how the railroad shaped the aspirations or distrust of Georgia's communities.

He notes how the influence of Northern "carpetbaggers" led to the development of many of Ga's reconstruction railroads and the erection of its many distinctive high-style courthouses. The influence of Bostonian H.H. Richardson on Georgia architects Gloucke and Bruce & Morgan is prevalent as well.

Interestingly, Mr. Caldwell is intent on revealing what he sees as the truth behind the "myths" of the Old and New South and how those myths are related through railroad development (the equivalent of a 19th century interstate highway) and public architecture. His conclusion that the creation of post-civil war railroads and the promise of Northern investment was nothing more than a sham in most cases is very unique and interesting and deserves further study.

This book is less about the specifics of architecture but basically provides a clearer view of rural southern history, and provides a useful collection of the local history of 159+ counties in Georgia. There are a few spelling errors, and could have used a few color plates, but the book is well made.

This book is a must for any Georgia architect, landscape architect, and historic preservationist. It also could be of use to a few politicians in order for them to better understand the background of thier own GA communities. Of course, armchair historians and lovers of southern history will enjoy it as well.

This set of three books Dynasty of Death, Eagles Gather and The Final Hour were published in England in the 1940's and not allowed to be published here until the 70's or 80's. I have read almost all of her books and these 3 are my favorites. In my opinion she is one of the best authors of our time.

A very powerful look at the growth of an armaments giant.

I have been a fan of Taylor Caldwell since first reading 'Bright Flows the River'. 'Dynasty of Death' is a powerful book which chronicles the rise of the armaments industry from a one room shack into the giant that it is today. If you want to understand the enormous reach of this powerful industry, you cannot miss reading 'Dynasty of Death'.

Eating disorders aren't a product of dieting trends or fashion goals: they are long-standing diseases which first appeared in the late 1600s and affect young and old alike. EATING DISORDERS reveals the possible causes, effects and treatments of disorders ranging from Anorexia nervosa to pica and selective eating, offering nine chapters which blend medical facts with case histories.

I read this book while in a therapy group for eating disorders. It made me realize what I was doing to myself, and opened my eyes to all the complications an eating disorder can create! This book motivated me to get back on the track of healthy eating and living. I would recommend this book to anyone. Even if you've never had an eating problem, it will help you better understand them.

The cover of this book is exceptional, so do not think for one minute that it is just "one of those coffee table books".
The beauty of this place, Echo Lake, will stun you and the photos will knock your socks off. Plus there is a sentimental connection with the author --four generations--of love and environmental caring that comes through very strongly. If you have any interest in saving and protecting our planet this book will delight you.
This area presented many challenges to bringing comfort and pleasure to this pristine place without intruding on its natural beauty. It offers many outdoor activities to those who love nature.

Caldwell's book is a really nice history of the Echo Lake area and four generations of family experience there.
His own photographs from his years there are beautiful, and the historic photos are extensive, well selected, and add greatly to the text.
Anyone with knowledge of, or interest in, this area will enjoy this book a lot and will value the information and look at the photos over and over. This book is a gem.

The Best One Volume Overview of Mme. Blavatsky's Life
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-01-08
Here for the first time is the story of H. P. Blavatsky's life in the words of her contemporaries. Although not a biography per se, this collection tells the story of Madame Blavatsky's eventful career with a special look at the "Esoteric World" in which she lived. These reminiscences by her relatives, acquaintances, friends, co-workers, critics and enemies allow the reader to enter into the historical milieu of HPB's time and give a vivid portrayal of Madame Blavatsky's personality. The narratives are arranged in chronological order and include (1) striking word portraits of HPB; (2) reminiscences giving insight into HPB's enigmatic character; (3) incidents that are sometimes humorous and witty; (4) accounts of psychic phenomena performed by Madame Blavatsky; and (5) descriptions of encounters with HPB's Masters. These personal reminiscences of HPB by more than seventy of her contemporaries give a vivid portrayal of one of the most extraordinary and controversial figures of modern times. Here is a sourcebook of rare original material on HPB illustrated with forty-four photographs and drawings.

In The Esoteric World Of Madame Blavatsky: Insights Into The Life Of A Modern Sphinx, Daniel Caldwell has collected a wealth of biographical information on one of the most influential metaphysical thinkers and writers of her day. Arranged in chronological order, we are treated to Madame Blavatsky's travels beginning in Russia and spanning the entire world including her years in New York, and sojourns to London, Bombay, Allahabad, Sri Lanka, Lahore, Adyar, France, Germany, and Italy. A "must" for students of Madame Blavatsky's writings and metaphysics, Caldwell's informative text is wonderfully enhanced with a number of illustrations and photographs.

Commentaries on Revalations
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-28
I have found that there are many commentaries on the book of Revelations. I do not think that most of them provide sound reasoning for their opinions. Most commentaries on this book seem - to me - to be near plaegerisms of transcribed notes from classes and sermons. With these commentaries I find that instead of plainly explaining their rhetoric they become wordy and redundant. Like some may find this review, apologies. It is rare to find a commentary like unto Ryrie's work in this commentary. His presentation is well organized, and most importantly simple. Believing what you may about the time-line of the end times you will be intrigued by how Ryrie goes verse-by-verse stating his perspective in a way that makes sense to anyone, and still giving the reasons others have different views. If you are looking for someone to simply agree with you and you hold to anything other than a pre-trib rapture you will not find what you are looking for here. If you are open and learning you will learn. You may not agree but you will learn from this book. I love it.

Scholarly Without Being Overwhelming....

Ryrie, perhaps best known for the Ryrie Study Bible, has here written a verse-by-verse Revelation commentary noteworthy for being sufficiently detailed and scripturally sound without being too overwhelming for the average layperson. For readers with a mindset to study but little or no background in Revelation, I recommend this solid commentary. Also, this updated edition has quite a few helpful charts. If after this book more depth is desired, try other dispensational commentaries such as those of Walvoord, Thomas, Couch (ed.), or Newell. (For those familiar with eschatology lingo, if you are a preterist, historicist, or postrib premillenialist in your endtimes interpretation, you will not like this book, since it is written from a pre-trib, pre-millenialist viewpoint.)

Required Reading for Aspiring Actresses!

Review Date: 2008-09-21
Zoe Caldwell OBE is one of theatre's finest living actresses with one problem. Outside the theatre circles, most people haven't the faintest clue who she is. Despite that she has won four Tony awards and is probably in the New York Theatre Hall of Fame, most people don't know who she is. In this book, she chronicles her modest upbringing from Melbourne, Australia and her experiences in the Australian theatre before venturing to Stratford to act in Shakespeare and finally to North America where she settled in Westchester, New York with her husband, producer Robert Whitehead and their two sons. She also worked as a stage actress. THe book stops by the time that she plays Cleopatra in Shakespeare's play. To her, the stage is the thing and the ultimate pursuit for the actor in their art. She doesn't go out and sell herself to endorse products. She doesn't get the roles that go to other equally trained and veteran actresses in the films and television nor does she care about that. She is quite happy being in the theatre. I was kind of interested in her experiences with Dame Edith Evans, Albert Finney, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn, and others and her time abroad in England before coming to America where she has felt most at home in the theatre on stage mostly in New York. This quadruple Tony Winner is a winner in the field of drama where she pursues the ultimate experience as the actor in playing before the audience. She has never failed her audience.

Great writing from a theatrical diva

Having just journeyed to Melbourne (from Sydney) to see Miss Caldwell in Durenmatt's "The Visit", which is part of the Melbourne Theatre Company's 50th anniversary season (she was also in their first production in 1953),I chanced upon her "semi-autobiography" in a local bookshop. This covers the first half of her dazzling life. Her prose is like her acting: direct, simple, intelligent, moving, riveting and unforgettable. Anyone even remotely interested in the theatre should take the opportunity to read this marvellous book. And if there is ever a chance to see the lady on a stage, RUN, don't walk, to get in line. A great book by a great artist.

There are very few treatises which share the daily intimate details of the lives of the pilots in the Luftwaffe on the western front. The accounts put you in direct perspective with the pilots of this historic squadron. The historical perspective is most provocative.

JG 26 Wardiary is a well-written and detailed account.
