Perfect book for fans of this artist...Review Date: 2008-01-15
The front contains a biography about Clyde which was good because apart from having 2 large posters of his on my walls for many years I did not know anything about him. As well as English the text is in another language which at a guess i think might be Dutch, possibly German.
There is a good variety of works in this book too, again great for me to get to know what this artist is capable of. Works range from full colour paintings of dragons, women posing (Clyde seems to like big breasted women), action scenes, D&D module covers containing all those sorts of creatures, and book covers, to some acrylic wash images of women posing, which was a nice touch.

THE PREMIERE FANTASY ARTIST!Review Date: 2005-10-27
SQP presents this over-sized book with 128 pages of Caldwell's outstanding fantasy paintings from over the past 25 years, all in full color and printed on heavy stock, suitable for fans and collectors alike. Long-time gaming fans or fantasy fiction fans will recognize many of the pieces in this collection from some of their favorite books and modules over the years. A comprehensive index in the back lists the title of each painting and the medium in which he worked to complete each piece.
While not necessarily known for his nudes, the book provides several examples done in Acrylic wash from the Savage Hearts portfolio, also for SQP. Pages 20 & 21 feature one of my all-time favorite Caldwell paintings, the darkly gothic castle of Ravenloft with the vampire Count Strahd standing in full regalia on a balcony looking out over his lands. A thoroughly dynamic painting!
"From the Shadows" features a pair of dungeon adventurers fighting off a trio of spectral skeletons. This painting was from a Ravenloft module. Pages 72 & 73 feature two more paintings of the sinister Count Strahd, as they perfectly capture that mist-shrouded, gothic look of old Universal Horror films.
The Caldwell woman always evokes a sense of power and this is demonstrated beautifully in the painting called "Leopard and the Serpent" showing a warrior maiden posing proudly wearing a leopard headdress. Then there is "Amara Wintersword" sitting entrenched in a malignant looking old tree, dressed in red cloak and scantily placed chain mail. "Midnight Snack" and "To Pick a Rose You Ask Your Hands to Bleed" are two wonderful paintings of female vampires, decidedly different in their eras, but both equally foreboding. The latter piece coming from the Vampire: The Masquerade Player's Handbook for White Wolf.
Another of my favorite paintings is "Fiddler Fair" as a female bard plays her fiddle while the grim reaper hovers behind her. This was from a cover to a Mercedes Lackey book for Baen. "Forbidden Embrace" is also a great piece. A raven haired enchantress embraces a foul, tentacled creature that looks like it just walked out of a Lovecraft story. This was from a cover to Inquest Gamer magazine.
I say "favorites" in only the loosest sense of the word as it's literally impossible to pick a favorite from Caldwell's distinguished body of work. He truly is the gold standard when if comes to fantasy artists.

Guidelines for care in educational settings Review Date: 2004-10-21
The formats for these charts are adapted from Children's Hospital Chronic Illness Program. Charts are organized with the student's name, person trained and position in the top left corner. The columns allow for six dates to be entered under the following headings, Name and Procedure, Preparation, Identifies Supplies and Procedure. Located within these sections are numbered specifics anywhere from five to twenty. Many of the lists are two pages with the final line for the parent or guardian to sign and date.
My main purpose in borrowing Children and Youth Assisted by Medical Technology in Education Settings: Guidelines for Care was to learn the correct terminology for the variations used in tube feeding along with the precautions and tools needed. There are diagrams that show the placements of the tubes as well as the pump, feeding bag, syringe and clamp.
Also listed are points to remember, observations and possible problems that require immediate attention and those that are non emergencies. There are step by step guides on how to change tubes, along with the clean up of the area and how to dispose of tools and waste. The pages with explanations have these listed in italic font.
The details and diagrams help to grasp the enormity of this decision while explaining how the education system handles students with special health care needs. This book is the manual to help prepare all those involved in the daily lives of the children and also adults who must utilize these pieces of equipment.

Why Schools Can't Be FixedReview Date: 2004-04-07
Full of first hand accounts, this book shows the difference between learning and schooling; why schools are bad for children mentally, physically, and emotionally; why teachers talk too much and prevent students from real socialization; why tests are not only useless, but harmful; why schools turn previously well mannered children into "behaviour problems"; and so much more...
An excerpt from The Underachieving School highlights the problem:
"In school certain things are "spozed" to happen; the kids are "spozed" to sit still, be quiet, read the texts, do the workbooks, pass the exams. If none of these things happens, if the kids learn nothing, riot in the halls, drop out, that's OK, as long as you tried to make happen what was "spozed" to happen. But if you tried to make something else happen, even if, like Herndon's, your kind of order worked and your kids found things worth doing and actually did them, you're a threat to the system, and out you go. "
Many of us think that bad schools and student underachievement are a modern problem. They are not. Everett Reimer wrote about achievement problems in the 70s. John Taylor Gatto wrote about the 80s and 90s. Flesch, of "Why Johnny Can't Read" fame, wrote in the mid-50s. John Holt writes in the early 60s.
Read this book. Read Holt's others books. Read the authors above who came before and after Holt. Then you will have a broad picture, and will be able to truly understand, The Underachieving School.

Loss of a loved oneReview Date: 2000-07-18
As important as the ability to identify and empathize with the emotions outlined in this text over such a tragedy, is the information Ms. Caldwell details on how to interact with governmental agencies when confronted with a disappearance and possible death of a loved one. She clarifies official rules and regulations and outlines the names, addresses, and phone numbers of important and helpful agencies that are in existence to assist people in this unfortunate circumstance. The book offers examples of sample letters to write to the various organizations, and describes how to more assertively demand action in some instances. In addition, there are recommendations of proactive ways to work with patients who have Alzheimer's disease to keep them safe, but still be able to enjoy the life around them.
This book is not just about loss and grief for those who work with home care, and hospice patients, it is beneficial for parents, adult children of aging parents, and other health care professionals. This book is concise, well-written, and outlined in an organized manner for easy retrieval of important information.

A facinating collection of short stories with a common plot.Review Date: 1999-04-28
A master storyteller amazes with her tales of unsung heroesReview Date: 2000-05-31
It is tempting to find another term besides "spellbinding" to describe "Grandmother and the Priests" -- if only because the term is generally overused/misapplied and so sends the reader running for cover. Here it is the only apt adjective, for Taylor Caldwell has put together a novel unlike any other I have encountered, and every tale within the main plot is fresh and so exciting as to be cause for many sleepless nights while one continues to read it.
"Grandmother and the Priests" is actually a compendium of short stories skillfully collected into a single plot pretext. A group of traveling priests from the Victorian-age British Isles meet around the fireside of a wealthy grandmother to a young girl visiting her. There they tell their colleagues their most remarkable test of their vocation. This amounts to an encounter with life, the most extreme test ever put to their faith in God and in themselves -- if you will, their rite of passage through life, their existential moment where they turn back defeat. The young girl listens spellbound to these stories -- all of them too earnest to suggest exaggeration, for such is the author's skill -- and recounts them in this book.
If you ever yearned for real adventure, and for a book like no other you have read, then you will want to follow these very different priests throughout a land hostile to themselves and their flock, and watch in awe as they make sense of the overwhelming odds they face. The priests could not be more dissimilar, from elegant, highborn English aristocracy to scrappy Welshmen. Each has a special encounter awaiting their strength of mind, body and love of God and neighbor -- an encounter one immediately senses could only have been devised by a loving-yet-challenging God.
This book convinced me that the most thrilling journey is not to the center of the earth, nor to the furthest limits of space, but to an unblinking fight to awaken one's sleeping soul, adrift in its comfortable, rote rituals, customs and prefudices, afraid to live out under the stars and "go for broke".
"Grandmother and the Priests" is a definitive profile of everyday heroes. You feel larger in your life's outlook after reading this collection, and you wish more authors would apply themselves to chronicling the heroic in mankind, and to expressing their thoughts with such elegance and wit. Thank you, Taylor Caldwell, for standing up for the greatness of the human spirit in this great work that -- who knows, perhaps for its quaint title --has yet to receive the acclaim it deserves.
