Putting education into proper perspective
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-07
I read this book when I was in my last year of high school and it helped me to keep a healthy perspective vis a vis education. I ended up being a healthy sceptic of all "authoritative knowledge" "taught" me by my teachers. It also encouraged me to "learn" on my own even after I was done with formal schooling. Must read for people who feel unduly constrained by the educational system.

The book is well written and best suitable for middle - junior high school students. Though the book is a little aged, it still provides much information about the history and culture of the region. Note that East Pakistan is now Bangladesh, and the picture on page 57 may be offensive to some readers from New York.

From the Introduction:

"The writer of this vivid and interesting autobiography was one of the earliest converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Living in Kirtland at the time the first missionaries visited that place, October, 1830, she and her parents were soon baptized. She became intimate with the parents of the Prophet Joseph Smith as well as with the Prophet, his brother, Hyrum, the Patriarch, and with all the early Saints. Her recital of those scenes of joy, of sorrow, of mobs and of constant movings and drivings is one of the most detailed descriptions ever presented. She fills in the large gaps necessarily left by many historians who give space to causes and effects rather than giving intimate pictures of daily domestic difficulties. She was a heroine in her own right, and to the last she bore her abiding testimony of the truth of the Gospel and the mission of the Prophet Joseph Smith."

1917 era view of controversial states-rights advocate
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-01
This is a scholarly review of a man's life. It is also circa 1917. I have no input on the author at all. Still, he was closer to the life of the subject than we are now. Basically, Calhoun was a nationalist in his early years, then became stubborn in his later years as he saw the threat to his home state (South Carolina) grow. I know this two-volume set because my Grandmother was a staunch segregationist while I grew up in Mississippi in the late 1960's, and Calhoun apparently became one of the idols of those folks based on his "States' Rights" thing. I have disavowed all that my family believed in due to its inherent racism. But, now, I'm kind of thinking that if you read the U.S. Constitution, you can understand the uproar that both the slavery and taxation things created in the Southern states, though it is not politically correct to say as such these days. Calhoun, Clay , and Webster controlled the Congress in their day. You can not understand the times without reading about the three men. As to that, this book is not the first you need to read. Still, these two volumes give an unbiased view into the pre Civil War thoughts of one of our greatest statesmen.

It really is a pretty story. I really enjoyed it. I don't know how my family came across owning this book, It's propably from one of my grandparents.

The story is about Lovey Mary, a rebellious little girl who lives at an orphanage. She is put in charge of a 2 year old boy named Tommy. Tommy's mother comes to get him and Lovey runs away with him and raises him.

Too much ground to be covered, but ambitious nonetheless

This wonderful book has an ambitious scope - not only does it have a well-detailed description of the first magic item-selling shop ever published by TSR, it also includes the gold piece and experience point values of thousands of magic items - with hundreds of illustrations to enhance play! (So what does a currach look like, exactly, anyway?) Even better, from a collector's point of view, is the TSR Product List - a summary of every single release ever put out by TSR from the very beginning (1974) to 1992, complete with product codes. A veritable treasure trove of reference information for the discriminating DM!

"Taylor Caldwell has written a modern religious novel about an idealist who builds a remarkable chapel - no minister, no congregation, no service, merely a quiet, comfortable room with drawn curtains behind which sits the man who is ready to listen to the troubles of all who care to come there. In this revealing and moving novel, all kinds of people come for help - the neglected wife, a factory worker who is thinking of deserting his family, a negro who has lost his faith in God, to mention a few. Miss Caldwell's talents are again well demonstrated in a story which will inspire readers by its simple eloquence."

The Marklands decribes two Greyhawk lands at the time of the "From the Ashes" box set. I think around 591 c. Anyway it goes into the political and military intrigues of Furyrondy and Nyrond. If you like Greyhawk I recommend it as a source to build lots of adventures or wars.

With the setup that Molly takes her brother Micah's cookies, mom comes in to mediate and tells her children "The Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need." Molly poses a series of questions "what if THIS happens?" and mom replies each time to remember that "the Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need." My 3 and 5yo began repeating the refrain with me and enjoyed it. The book was set aside for several weeks then surfaced again, when my 3yo wanted to read it. When I was reading, she had immediate recall of the verse and cited "the Lord is my shepherd, I have everything I need." I was very impressed!
