On the back of the book, it says that it is written for the clinician, not the statistician. I would say that a biostatistician should definitely read this book before conducting any consulting or collaborations. One has to understand the clients's needs (clinician) as well as the client's audience to be a truely effective biostatistician.

A must have. When would be the next version?

Taking care of sick and injured patients requires special skills, obtained at considerable effort over many years. What about publishing research reports? Any author will tell you that completing and then publishing a research project requires an enormous amount of time and effort. The number of submitted manuscripts has increased more rapidly than the number of journals; at some of our strongest journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA, only about 10% of submitted papers are accepted. Clearly, a "wannabe" author needs any and every bit of help he/she can get.

Dan Byrne's attractive reasonably priced "Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" provides essential help for both the novice and the more experienced author. The book is unique in many ways. For example, some of the material was obtained from a questionnaire sent to reviewers - the best source of ideas and tips about how to submit a successful, competitive manuscript.

Both the overall big picture, and small, but important details are well covered. Several chapters focus on overall objectives. For example, chapter one summarizes ten key principles for success. Some are obvious, but easy to overlook.

"Invest ample time and money in planning."

As Dan Byrne suggests, you need to spend a lot of time thinking about your research problem and formulating a research plan before you do anything. Without a clear aim and a careful literature review, you are unlikely to succeed, or, if you do, you may simply duplicate previous work.

There is equal attention to small points, such as choice and effective use of graphics.

"You can reduce your graph on a photocopier to see how it will look. Edit the graph until it is as uncluttered and professional as possible."

Any experienced reviewer will tell you how important it is to submit a manuscript with clear writing, clear graphics, and a clear development of ideas. As the book points out, even if the idea is good, a poorly prepared, confusing manuscript is likely to be rejected simply because the reviewers and editors are unsure what the author is trying to say.

It is easy to develop a hostile attitude to reviewers and editors, especially when, after months of hard work your only reward is: "Dear___: I am sorry to inform you we are returning your manuscript entitled .... Because of tight space requirements, we are forced to reject many high quality papers such as yours...."

At such times it helps to remember that Dr. Rosalyn Yalow collected and framed all the rejection letters she received prior to eventual acceptance and publication of the paper for which she was awarded the 1977 Nobel prize in medicine. This book provides accurate, detailed information to authors so they will understand what reviewers and editors look for, and how they judge the quality of a manuscript.

The appendices, which take up about a third of the book, provide practical information to guide authors through the publication process. Having all this material in one place is a real time-saver. You will find the widely used "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals", a medical researcher's directory with extremely useful web sites, and the Helsinki declarations for biomedical research.

"Publishing Your Medical Research Paper" is a valuable tool that will guide researchers and authors through the entire research and publication process. Following the recommendations will greatly increase the strength of a manuscript and the chance for acceptance. One word of caution - many of the recommendations concern the early phases of research; to obtain maximum benefit from this book read it before rather than after completion of your project.

Excellent!

This book is an excellent and well-documented guide to the design of clinical trials, the analysis of data, and the construction of a high quality manuscript. Both the novice and the expert will derive many helpful suggestions from its content.

To call this novel "compelling" would certainly not do it justice. As a veteran Writers Guild member it is sometimes difficult to suspend disbelief and venture on that magic literary carpet ride without seeing the man behind the curtain -- the writer. This was not the case when experiencing this M. Scott Byrnes genius adventure. Notice I did not say "when reading," but used the word "experiencing." I started reading and then that metaphysical miracle occured and I was on a journey like no other. Remarkably, I rarely gravitate to stories of this genre, yet this gem transcends all expectations and launches you into the stratesphere both litterally and figuratively. I have no idea what the author's initial "M." stands for, but I'd bet it has something to do with "M"astery. This is a brilliant story and a must for anyone who wishes to experience an out of this world adventure like no other.

A good blend of SF, Religion and Evolution

"Revelations' by Scott Byrnes is a SF novel that holds your attention throughout its 279 pages.

The story keeps shifting between the exploration of Mars and the unearthly attempts on planet earth to keep the secrets being revealed. The story is well knit and is a good mix of space science, religion and evolution/creation. Readers of Erich Von Daniken's books such as "Gods from Outer Space" and "Chariots of Gods" will find some similarity to the ideas described therein in the present book.

Though earth and its civilisations have seen several religions, the author sticks to Christianity only. So, readers of other
denominations may find the story stretching their credulity rather too thin. However, if one keeps in mind that it is just a story, one can certainly enjoy the same.

The book is well written and well edited, well printed. Certainly a good read.

Note: This book reached me when I was in hospital and thus was one of the couple that were available for reading. So, my apologies to other authors whose books stayed unread.

Cold fusion, a source of clean energy, has been discovered but for it to have wide use, it must interact with barrettazine, an element that is scarce on earth. Congress has spent billions of dollars getting mankind to land on Mars not for research purposes but because it is thought that barrettazine is found in abundance on the red planet. When NASA geologist Kathy Palmer finds a vast deposit below the surface of Mars she also finds a perfectly preserved city.

They find a repository where scrolls are kept and on earth a think tank is formed. Included is Tim Redmond, whose IQ is off the charts though he fears he is going insane since he began having a secret conversation with a person named Peter who pushes him into remembering who he really is. The scrolls have a word that is the name is of Jesus Christ and using that they decipher one of the scroll that have bible verses on it. They also find on Mars a solid sphere, one that is also found in the Sea of Galilee where the Nazarene was born. Tim is the key to finding out the answer of the messiah & God and how the Christ appeared on two separate planets several million years apart. Finding the answers could save the Earth from the Armageddon that is coming.

REVELATIONS is an exciting science fiction thriller that is loaded with revelations about the origin of humanity, the existence of Christ, and extraterrestrial beings. The story unfolds slowly so the reader has a chance to absorb all the information that is revealed simultaneously on Mars and Earth. Tim is an interesting character who doesn't understand his true destiny until he meets Peter face to face. M. Scott Byrnes creates an entire new mythos for the origins of Earth and the desolation of Mars.

A surprising page-turner, successfully treading a delicate line between entertaining speculation and religious insensitivity. If Marcion wrote sci fi thrillers, they might look a lot like this. Put this on your shelf next to VALIS, then join me in asking "so then what happened?"

This book grabbed me from the very beginning and would not let go. The intrigue is wonderful. Mystery builds upon mystery as additional clues are uncovered by the members of the first manned mission to Mars and by a NASA-sponsored think-tank on Earth. Just when I thought my brain could be stretched no further, another permutation would unfold, beautifully crafted into a mind blowing conclusion. Byrnes has thrown a lot into his cauldron: hard science (physics, geology, biology, anthropology, neurology, etc.), multiple genres (mystery, thriller, techno-thriller, science fiction, speculative fiction), various religious allusions (Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism) and diverse venues (Mars, Ghana, Israel, NYC, Washington DC). What emerges is a very creative and extremely entertaining book.

"Twice the Love" is compiled and edited by Susan M. Heim, a former senior editor for "Chicken Soup for the Soul." Similar to the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books, "Twice the Love" is composed entirely of short stories and poems written by parents or family members of twins, which are both entertaining and inspirational. Throughout the book, John M. Byrne colorfully illustrates the stories with cartoons.
As a parent of twins, I found myself nodding in agreement with the many challenges faced by parents of multiples. My favorite story was titled, "My Hands Are Full," which is an observation strangers love to make on a daily basis. I enjoyed the author's humorous review of all the statements you constantly hear as a parent of twins. My favorite poem was titled "The Math of Twins." Written in a rhyming manner, the author calculates all the numbers related to rearing twins.
"Twice the Love" is an entertaining and heart-warming book that any parent of multiples would enjoy.

Celebration for parenthood.

"Twice the Love," completed and edited by Susan M. Heim, is filled with humorous and inspiring antecedents. Parents longing to share their special tales of living with multiples share their narratives with readers.
I laugh, cry, and have my heartstrings tugged each time I read the funny, poignant, joyful, sad and loving stories about each family s miracle multiples. Susan M. Heim, the mother of twins, selected a cross-section of stories sent to "Twins Magazine" over the years.
One mother shared her adventures in potty training her twin sons. She took the boys to the mall, where, of course, they had to go, now. The boys hadn't developed a sense of direction. The brown leather shoes of the woman in the next stall will never be the same. Charlene Henderson recalls people repeatedly saying to her, better you than me. As the mother of twin sons, I agree with her, better me than you! My hands are full holding my heart inside my chest because it swells with pride for these two small beings. In "How Lucky I," Katie Tatton shares "when we discovered we were having twins it was a miracle. Even if I never could have another baby, I would now have three children. I was ecstatic. I vowed I'd never forget how lucky I am to be the mother of twins."
"Twice the Love" is a delightful look at parenting twins. They are sometimes funny, always touching. This wonderful book brought back marvelous memories of raising my twin sons. The cover is a little busy, but the photograph is charming. The printing is rather small. Altogether this is a pleasant read that will bring smiles to the faces of many parents.

What a surprise. I thought this book would be charming, but it exceeded expectations. It spans the human experience from the comedy expressed in "The Barbie Wars by Tom Reeves", to heart breaking triumph in "Coping with Chronic Illness," to the depth and introspection of Cheryl Oberbeck Burns' "Travelers in Space".

Some of the entries are a bit too cute, but all of it is relatable, and relevant. Not just twin parents, but all parents (and people) will find something here to make them chuckle, smile, and feel a bit more human.

I read horror novels a lot. (Don't you?) But this book I hated -- because it was too good. It's a very real and immediate story about the evil that lurks in your own heart, and the hearts of the ones around you. And that made it absolutely terrifying. I know it's hard to find, but that's because no one who owns a copy will give theirs up easily...

I've always thought of John Byrne as a competent, if unspectacular, author, but Whipping Boy was a compelling read. Byrne's hypothesis of "what if there were no guilt" quickly leads the characters in a downward spiral that is all-too-believable. Whipping Boy, when read in a contemporary America of school shootings, child abuse and use of illicit narcotics, is a gripping cautionary tale about the decline of morality and the consequences of a society that too often takes the easy way out.

A story that unfolds like a great horror movie. John Byrne introduces us to several characters who may seem insignificant at first, but come around to be major forces by the end. The evil charcters in this book are so real that you shake when they are in the page. The hapless victims under the Whipping Boy's thrall are you, me, anybody. When you can see yourself in their shoes, you feel a shiver crawl up your spine and nest in your brain's dark recesses.

John Byrne has created a masterpiece of modern horror. At times it becomes a truly disturbing look into the human conscience. Byrne's characters are genuine, real, and average, which makes the horrors they commit all the more atrocious. This book is a must read.

I have just read The Flats by Leo Byrne. I was struck by the detail in his recollections. The story transports the reader back to Dublin in the rare oul times and as an Irish person myself, I felt such an affinity to the man and the story.
Leo has a style of writing which captures the Irish 'way' and his book had me experiencing a range of emotions both happy and sad. The details in The Flats are meticulous and the memories he recalls in the book, the people, the customs, the streets of Dublin etc are now remembered forever by a true son of Ireland in an authentic Irish way. A story-teller of renown that's Leo Byrne. Buy this book you won't be disappointed.

Review Date: 2004-07-16
The Flats is a charming glimpse into every day life in Ireland during the 40's and 50s. Often, I've seen books and movies criticised as portraying Ireland as we think it is not as it really is. This is a gentle, loving look at the apartments in Dublin and the ebb and flow of people during a kinder, gentler time. Dubliners have their own Dublinesque patter, Dublin roots in the sons and daughters, and supposedly they never lose their accent not matter where they have been transplanted. The

Irish have ways that centre heavily upon the family, neighbours, traditions and beliefs that are ages old.

Leo Byrne was born in Dublin in 1937, at Hollis Street Hospital, just a short walk from "the Flats" - the Perse House Flats. In 1959, he moved across the Pond to New York, eventually finding his way to California. He served in the American army. After retirement, he spent time at women's shelters, dressing as a leprechaun, to bring cheer and a wee taste of Eire to the Yanks. Even though he was transplanted, his heart fondly recalls his days in the Flats and it's reflected in his writing. His joy of life, his love for his native land comes through in each tale of this collection.

It's a perfect gift for that transplanted child of Eire or that person who feel Ireland calls to their soul. His thoughts cover holidays, personal hygiene, swimming in the Liffey, courting, trash handling and even a ghostly tale. An absolute must for anyone interested in Ireland.

Leo Byrne tells a great story ,I nearly had my own hand out for the slap from the teacher. The fright of a young boy in an inner city school comes across as does the first job and the sheer joy of the first big pay packet.
The pictures alone are worth the price of this book.I did shed a tear or two at his sheer love of his country and his people. For a man a long way from home for a long time he hasn't forgotten his roots. There has been many books written by Irish authors and Mister Byrne is up there with the best of them.Anyone that can make you laugh and cry at the same time are truly gifted.
My only question is where is the sequel???

This is a information-packed book. It's divided in nine chapters, but in fact you can see three parts:

The first part, with text and a lot of color pictures covers the basics of every subject you can imagine regarding sky watching: Binoculars, telescopes, cities and urban skies, software, history, every planet, binary stars, eclipses etc. etc. etc. always in just two or four pages.

The second part covers every constellation in the sky, in
alphabetical order (one constellation per page), with stars up to 6th (I guess) magnitude, highlighting the most interesting stars, nebulae etc., each one of the included features has a symbol (in the text below the map) so you can know at a glance if it is to be seen at naked eye, with binoculars or with a telescope. I should mention that it also has a 12 general skycharts, so you can always use the one according to your latitude and time of the year.

And the third part ("the Starhopping Guide") are 20 selected sectors of the sky, including stars up to 8th magnitude (deep-sky objects up to 12.5) with text and photos regarding deep sky features, double stars, nebulae etc. etc. Useful: constantly the text points out what you can expect to see with a given telescope (4", 6", 8" lens diameter).

And I have some mixed additional comments:
-I think every picture has been thoughtfully selected (no pictures just to fill space, as I've seen in other books).
-The sky maps are made by Will Tirion (so you can expect that

there is what should be there, and nothing less).
-There is a small map showing the path of sun eclipses until year 2015
-The moon is covered in 8 pages, featuring some 300 craters, mares etc.
-I liked the section about "in store test" for choosing binoculars.
-I was a little bit disappointed that the "Starhopping guide" includes many features for telescopes with an aperture of 8", and up to 16"... (of course, this is because I have a 5" aperture telescope!)
-The book itself has an uncommon size: about 6 1/2" x 11", so it's still handy to take it outdoors, but large enough to include sky maps of reasonable size.
-I see that this book includes in few words a lot of information that I've read in more detail somewhere else. I wonder how this will be taken for someone who this is her/his first skywatching book. It could be preciously treasured for years... or it could bore the the poor reader: Who knows?.
And finally, at the price offered here, it's a steal!

If I could have only one astronomy book, this would be it!

If I had to choose only one book on astronomy, this would be it. It contains monthly skycharts, magnitude 6 constellation charts for every constellation, 20 magnitude 8 starhopping adventures, and 8 pages of moon maps. In addition it contains a wealth of articles about such subjects as: planets, nebulas, telescopes, the history of astronomy, the space program, and explanations of a multitude of astronomy terms.

The book dedicates one or two pages to each constellation. Each constellation map shows the double stars, variable stars, open clusters, globular clusers, planetary nebula, difuse nebula, galaxies and quasars in the constellation and the surrounding area. The maps are blue background with the stars in yellow, and are easily readable at night. Along with the constellation map, there is a brief description of some of the noteable sites in that constellation. In the field you just need to find the constellation in the sky with the help of the monthly skychart, flip to that constellation in the book, and have fun finding all of its treasurers.

This book is a great field guide, as well as a great book to enjoy on those cloudy nights. Even if you are not a starwatcher, half the book is devoted to articles that will interest even the armchair astronomer.

For those who like a bargain, this book is like getting two books for the price of one. This volume is a compilation of the best of the books "Skywatching" and "Advance Skywatching". Each of these books is good in its own right, and now "Practical Skywatching" brings them together in one outstanding volume.

Signal Processing: A Mathematical Approach is a solid, college-level text about the mathematics behind signal processing, focusing on the mathematical background and tools needed to comprehend and employ signal processing techniques. Covering such topics as Fourier series and transforms, transmission and emission topography and image reconstruction, optimization techniques, high-resolution methods, and much more, Signal Processing includes descriptive instructionals, examples, figures and graphs, and exercises to refine one's grasp of the mathematical principles. A singularly valuable textbook or self-study resource for students and professionals, whether preparing for a future career or brushing up on standby skills.

The Math You Need to Process Digital Signals

An amazing amount of data being collected out in the real world comes in the form of digital signals. This includes radar, sonar, ultra-sound or other medical imaging system, and more. Once the data is captured (the realm of the pure enginnering types) some kind of processing has to be done to convert the data (a string of 0's and 1's) into something that comes across to us as information.

Now the problem moves to the mathematician who has to decide how to best take this data and process it to get it in a form that provides useful information. The basic mathematical techniques are not new (Fourier did his work about 1800, Hilbert around 1900) but nor are they the things you normally study in high school. As digital computers have become possible, new techniques have been developed to speed the processing task.

This book is positioned at the intersection of the engineer producing the signal, and the programmer who has to do something with it. It is the solid mathematical background to signal processing. It is basically a selection of the mathematical techniques needed to do signal processing.

Lots of meat here if you work at it

This relatively small (364 pages + bibliography and index) book contains an amazing amount of
material. There are numerous exercises, and many of them have hints. Answers to many but not
all, are available at the author's web site, available through the Math department at University
of Massachusetts Lowell. There is also a list of errors/typos. It is impressively shorter than
for many other technical books

The book contains a lot of information about signal processing and a lot of mathematics used
to construct signal processing algorithms. The author uses the text when he teaches "Mathematics
of Signal Processing." The title of the course is more accurate than the title of the book.
The author says the book was written with the title of the course but the publisher insisted
on changing it.

The introduction tells us the author was drawn into the field of signal processing by
accident in 1979, from the pure math fields of topology and functional analysis. The book is
his attempt to make the transition easier for others. This is applied math at the level of
rigor often found in texts with "Methods of ..." as the first words of the title. There are
no existence proofs. Orders of summation and integration are changed without detailed
justification. Matrices are assumed invertible, but workarounds are given for the rare
instances when they are not. The level of rigor seems appropriate for the subject. The emphasis
is on what might work, rather than on why something might not work.

The phrase "what might work" is important. In signal processing, the goal is to extract
information from too little distorted and noisy data. What worked in sonar might not work
for voice recognition. What worked on one set of data might not work on another set of data
for the same technology. One example involved a cross section of a skull. Just adding the
information that certain portions of the image were outside the skull yielded much better
information about what was inside.

The book contains 63 short chapters and there is a lot of meat per page. You should have a good
background in math, both in depth and breadth. There is a lot of calculus and linear algebra,
especially matrix manipulation. Some knowledge of differential equations is needed. Many of
the tricks (techniques) taught in advanced calculus are used. There is considerable use of
elementary mathematical statistics, such as expected values, standard deviation, and the normal
distribution, mostly in the later parts of the book. You do not have to be a master
of these subjects. You can use the results without understanding all of the details
of each step in a proof, but you probably need the mathematical maturity that comes from
those subjects. Gloss over too many steps and the subject matter seems incomprehensible.
Those who got an "A" in "Advanced Math for Poets" will probably be lost.

As an example of the concentrated presentation, the entire chapter devoted to the Fast Fourier
Transform, is only three pages. This includes 1/3 page of chapter header, a lead in about
evaluating polynomials, the algorithm and its proof, and justification for padding with zeros
to the next power of two, and there is still room to add a short paragraph in the next edition.

Besides the mathematical complexities, there is much more data than in most math classes.
Most data is in the form of vectors or matrices of complex numbers. Formulas are longer
than you might be used to. For example, some identities used to simplify results contain
13 references to matrices, many of them being inverses. The explanations seem good; there
is just a lot to absorb. Proofs and exercises are longer than most readers will have experienced,
and are more likely to involve multiple mathematical disciplines.

Many signal processing methods involve solving a system of linear equations. The system might be
underdetermined or inconsistent. Techniques for solving such a system have been known for
centuries, but are too slow when there are dozens to hundreds of equations for each point,
and many thousands or millions of points. Many iterative approximation methods are presented,
with information about the speed of convergence and the nature of the result if the system is
underdetermined or inconsistent. Some of the methods are identified as generalizations of other
methods.

I took the class taught by the author using the book. I had the prerequisites about 40 years ago.
It is a good thing that I'm retired, because it was far more than a full time job to keep up.
I've tried to write this review as a non-personal evaluation, but I suspect those who are better
or more recently prepared might be a little more favorable about the book than I am.
The author states he will respond to questions, suspected typos, etc.

There are some places where most readers will feel lost. A sentence or paragraph that seems
like it should be a conclusion or wrap-up will make no sense. "Huh? I didn't get that."
Press on. It is really a transition to the next topic.

Signal processing is essentially an operation performed on a computer, or occasionally by a
specialized circuit. Even a small application might be a lifetime job for a person. Several
algorithms are presented, but there is little recognition of the practical difficulties
involved in turning the equations into robust programs or practical circuits. It is a math book.

There is a bibliography of 195 items. I get the impression the book covers all the major
techniques used now, and many others that are of historical interest.

Overall, this is a book that you can get a lot out of, if you are willing to put a lot into it.

Nice Portrait of Maybeck's Work

This is the latest serious biography on Bernard Maybeck, and by far the best collection of photographs of his work to date (2008). A nice balance of archival material on Maybeck, including his drawings, and contemporary photos of his surviving buildings. Some photos accentuate golden hues that are not true to the real-life interiors, but this is a minor drawback in what is a very good picture of who Maybeck was and what he built. - William Marquand

A great overview of Maybeck's work. As a decorative concrete contractor, I was really looking for good photography of his work for inspirational purposes. I am definitely not disappointed.

I have not even looked at this book. It left my house in its wrapper.

My review is based on the reaction of my mother. Her father built houses in the bay area and did a few designed by Maybeck.

The joy in her voice as she describes the work he did and the pictures of the houses that she remembers from her childhood was worth every penny. The next time I visit her I expect to see a lot of this book as she seems to be really enjoying the nostalgic trip it has provided.

This is the best financial book I have ever read. I never imagined that learning about the stock market and investing in it can be fun. Tracy Byrnes makes it just that. Her book is easy to read, funny and so informative. It is like sitting and chatting over coffee with your best friend. That is how you feel after reading her book. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding the market. It would also be an excellent educational book to be used in universities. It is that good and more. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Thank You Ms. Byrnes.
