Collaboratively compiled and edited by biologists and academicians John H. Byrne and James L. Roberts, From Molecules To Networks: An Introduction To Cellular And Molecular Neuroscience is a superbly organized and presented college-level instructional text presupposing a heavy mathematic and scientific background as it meticulously instructs the reader concerning cellular components of nervous tissue, brain energy metabolism, molecular properties of ion channels, and more. Each instructional chapter is written and presented by a different specialist or specialists in the specific field. Some diagrams intersperse the largely nuts-and-bolts information of this straightforward and through textbook, recommended especially for cellular and molecular neuroscience students and professionals whose careers directly correspond to this vibrant field. From Molecules To Networks is a most welcome addition to neuroscience reference shelves, which comes nicely enhanced with an accompanying CD-ROM that includes all the various illustrations and diagrams.

An Excellent Book on God
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-16
At last a book about God which is honest and insightful. Byrne sees through the clouds of theology clearly, and gives a really excellent critique of the traditional ideas of God. His position is agnostic, but he thinks that we are all in this position (believers and everyone else alike). The chapter on suffering (Divine Consolation?) is one of the best I've read and he also does a great job on science and religion. Byrne argues that the universe is open to religious interpretation and that we will never find one answer that suits everyone. He finishes the book with 10 theses on God that make a great summary of his ideas. There's so much bad writing on religion its great to read something as interesting as this.

Katy Byrne's diaries are engrossing, heartbreaking and funny at the same time. She models for all of us, what a relief it is to be real in a world that would often rather we conform and be quiet. By example, she makes her case that though it takes courage, honest conversation can change the world, if we use it with intention and integrity. A fun, quick, but deep read, with cartoons and journal questions. Hairball Diaries will get you thinking, writing and telling your truth. Hairballs for health, happiness and world peace!

Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 by journalist Robert O'Byrne is an impressive, scholarly, in-depth biography of British art dealer and patron Hugh Lane, who earned his way from poverty to fame and respect as a specialist in the great art of the old masters. His work in the creation of public art galleries in South Africa and the Municipal Gallery of Ireland earned him lasting prestige and some controversy, until his unfortunate death on the Lusitania when it was sunk by a Germans in 1915. Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 is the fascinating life-story presentation of a man who lived, worked, and devoted himself to the trading of art.

A multi-layered web of hidden truths unfolds
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-17
The Inquisitory is a singularly unique literary masterpiece by Robert Pinget. Written entirely in the format of the extended question-and-answer interrogation of an old, deaf servant (who is an unreliable narrator being grilled about unspecified crimes that may or may not have taken place at his master's French chateau), who hints at shady events ranging from tax fraud to murder, drug deals, and orgies. The elderly servant maintains distance, feigns ignorance, yet paints a stealthily accusatory picture -- if his testimony can be believed. A multi-layered web of hidden truths unfolds in this engrossing original work, which is superbly translated from the original French by Donald Watson.
