Mr. Butler just had one of his articles translated into Russian and published in our aviation newspaper which is circulated throughout Eastern Europe and Russia. His adventure certainly is both timely in terms of Russian history and unique in terms of aviation history. Such times of optimism are very rare in Russian history, plus with the cultural exchange aspects, and the fact they were guests of then VP Rutskoi, this group of international adventurers snuck through a window in time not likely to come around any time soon.

I commend their spirit and Mr. Butler's efforts in creating such a wonderful book about the trip.

A truly human story written across the pages world history

As this is being written, two adventurers have just become the first to circumnavigate the world nonstop in a balloon. Almost seven years earlier, a group of private pilots flew around the world with much the same enthusiasm in their small General Aviation aircraft. But it is the very subject of their stops that makes A World Flight Over Russia entertaining.

Written by Brad Butler, the group's historian and photographer, it is the true story of 12 small planes flying 17,500 miles around the world in 20 days while traversing Russia. This was supposed to be the inaugural event of what was to be repeated every summer with a different group flying a different route across that vast country. Unfortunately, as the political landscape changed, so did the opportunity to make this an annual aviation happening.

Though they created several aviation "firsts," the book distills down to a story about people. Despite years of deprivation and political problems, the Russian people were found to be consistently warm-hearted and giving. And though it may be only a footnote in a long line of aviation achievements, it is nonetheless a truly unique tale about a group of determined pilots. It makes from some fascinating reading.

It is a truly unique story at one of the most interesting turning points in history, a time when the world was changing right before everyone's eyes. A great read for pilot and non-pilot alike, truly a story for the ages.

What an amzining story, it was true and exciting!

The World Flight Over Russia kept me captivated from beginning to end. I felt as if I was seated next to the author taking photogprahs along side him and feeling the fear of some of the close calls. I would not have known the historical signficance of such an adventurous feat if I had not read this book.

The son of a Fergus Falls native has published a book that documents an around-the-world flight of 12 small planes. The trip placed Brad Butler in peril of dying several times as the group crossed Russia in 1992, during the breakup of the Soviet Empire.

Butler, son of Ted H. Butler, who graduated from high school here in 1950, is a photographer, not an aviator, by trade. He was doing photography and film work at a Fortune 100 company when he was tapped as a last-minute replacement to document the rally.

Years following the 20 day event, using several pilots' journals, 25 hours of videotape, thousands of photographs and his memory, Butler wrote, A World Flight Over Russia.

John Butler books are my 3 year old son's absolute favorite. He is captivated by the beautiful soothing illustrations, and loves to chant along with the story being told. I have been reading this story to him since he was 6 months old, and have since bought all of the John Butler board books. They are lovely, and a wonderful bonding experience with your child!

We got this book for my daughter when she was around one year old, and read it constantly for a long time. For awhile she even had it memorized. Now she's 3 1/2 and prefers longer books usually, but still occasionally likes to go back to the comfort of this one. The illustrations are wonderful, the rhyme is catchy, and it makes a great bedtime book because it goes from animals in action to animals curling up and getting ready for bed. We just bought a copy for a bday gift for a friend who's turning 1 soon.

It is a known fact that most youngsters love animals, so John Butler's CAN YOU CUDDLE LIKE A KOALA? is a must have for your child's bookshelf. Right before bedtime, you can take your child on a journey through the wilds, where he or she can leap like a frog, wink like an owl, and more, then say goodnight to the various animals as they nestle down for a good night's sleep. This is a gorgeous book that is filled with soothing prose that is perfect for putting a little one to bed. A must have!

THE most complete psychopharmacology clinical text. You will find rare side effects and drug-drug interactions that would be omitted in any other clinical text and that you would only discover by doing a literature search. Many tables make comparison between drugs of the same class easy. Also has a section on herbal products and pages of patient information sheets that can be photocopied and given to patients. This is a gem.

A Loving Tribute to a GREAT Talent

Daws Butler was the best of the best, right up there with Mel Blanc and Paul Frees. I am prejudiced as he was a friend of mine (My name appears twice in this book, grossly mispelled both times.), but he was the greatest. When he died, it took over 30 actors to replace him. This book, written by a friend and student of Daws, while hardly literary, is a well-researched labor of love, and a fine tribute to one of the nicest men ever to be the very best at what he did. If you loved Beany, or Huckleberry Hound, or Yogi Bear, Captain Crunch, or the classic Stan Freberg recordings, you'll find the story of the man behind the voices to be a terrific read. If you weren't privelged to know Daws, this book is as close as you can come now to a visit with this kind, wise man.

This book is much in the same pattern as design as Ben Ohmart's other books. I have he Paul Frees book and i have this one...Daws Butler became a part of my psyche somewhere in the 1980's. I was reading voice credits on cartoons on a USA Network series called "Cartoon Express". They aired a series called "Yogi's Treasure Hunt" as well as "Yogi's Space Race". Daws Butler's name was coming up. Later on i was in K-Mart reading voice credits on the back of cartoon home videos. I found a video of "The Jetsons meet the Flintstones". I read Daws Butler's name on there, too! I also found the names of Don Messick and Mel Blanc, too...all three top voice actor's. While Mel Blanc IS the most famous because of his work in theatrical cartoons and the fact that Mel's voice was on radio {over 30 years associated with the Jack Benny radio and TV shows!}...but while Mel Blanc had the more familiar name, Daws Butler was busy creating a large group of character voices for made-for-TV cartoons and in some cases, TV commercials. This book by Ben Ohmart tells the Daws Butler story...there are even passages and personal letters written by Daws sprinkled throughout the book. There was a PBS documentary about Daws that aired in the 1980's. It was called "Voice Magician". I have that video and it is amazing to watch Daws go from one character to the next. This book is a more expanded and comprehensive spin on that PBS show. Not many people realize that Daws Butler's voice graced the cartoons from the mid '40s through the mid '80s! They will learn all about Daws and his strong work ethic and his style of voice acting. For Daws, doing a "voice" required practice and training. He believed that voice actor's must play the part physically as well as vocally. This meant, Daws would become bouncy while doing the dialogue for SNAGGLEPUSS. He felt it helped him do a better vocal. YOGI BEAR, for example, Daws would stand with his shoulders rared back and bellow the words into the microphone. For HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, Daws would say that he would just think slow and talk slow and add in a southern accent BUT it must be the correct southern accent. A North Carolina southern sounds different from a Kentucky southern...or a Georgia southern. Known for his teaching, he opened up a voice actor work-shop and used his acting methods and beliefs to teach people the art of voice acting. The pictures in this book show Daws at various stages of his career. Stan Freberg is also talked about in this book...he and Daws were a team during the late '40s through the late '50s with a string of comedy singles AND a children's TV show "TIME FOR BEANY". Daws also narrated MANY cartoons for Tex Avery on MGM. At MGM, he and Don Messick became friends and both of them would later become the sound of Hanna-Barbera during the early years of made-for-TV cartoons, 1957-1967. On page 112, we see Daws in character as SNAGGLEPUSS. The look on his face almost makes one think he's saying: "Heaven's to Murgatroyd!". That picture is a good example of Daws physically getting into the character as well as vocally speaking the role. The SNAGGLEPUSS section talks about Bert Lahr...that's the actor whose voice Daws used as an inspiration for SNAGGLEPUSS. On page 93 we see Daws in the recording studio with Captiol Records exectives. Also in the picture are June Foray and Stan Freberg. Daws is standing beside June...Freberg is looking up into the ceiling...Foray is the only female in the picture and so she isn't hard to spot! On page 102 we see Daws in the studio with Don Messick and Doug Young. Young was the voice of DOGGIE DADDY and DING-A-LING to Daws Butler's AUGIE DOGGIE and HOKEY WOLF respectively. Don Messick was typically playing supporting roles and walk-on's during these two cartoon segments. As with the Paul Frees book, Ohmart lists nearly everything Daws was a part of during his long career. Daws only had ONE recurring theatrical cartoon character...the French speaking wolf LOOPY De LOOP, a nice wolf who was always getting into trouble because of what he was: a wolf! People would see Loopy as a wolf and automatically assume Loopy was dangerous and once again, Loopy would be running for his life! Hahaha. All the radio appearances are noted...all the characters...all the vinyl children's albums are listed...this, along with the Paul Frees book, are essential reading for voice actor fans or those wanting to read about the legends of voice acting!! I hope Ben Ohmart one day writes a book about two more voice giants: Mel Blanc and Don Messick.

He's not as well known as Mel Blanc, but should be. Daws Butler was the voice of Yogi Bear, Huck Hound, Elroy Jetson, Mr.
Jinx, Quick Draw McGraw (and don't you fer-get it!) and Snagglepuss in the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons. He also
worked with the legendary Stan Freberg (from "Time For
Beany" to his radio shows and records). Toward the end of
his life, he served as mentor to the likes of Nancy Cartwright
(voice of Bart Simpson) and Dr. Demento's co-hort Whimsical
Will.

This is an enjoyable read for fans of cartoons and old time
radio. Ohmart and Beliacqua show us the man behind the voices, both at work and at home. Heavens to Murgatroyd!

Alright, I have to admit that I thoroughly under-appreciated this guy... but now I've got it right, thanks to the authors of this book. All I thought of Daws Butler was "great voice guy". Wrong! The title sets you straight right off. Here's a man that defined the term "actor" and delivered not voices but "characters". You can take a look at the pictures of the cartoon characters on the cover to which he gave life but that's only a small sampling. In fact there was more going on between Daws ears than you'd find at a NASA launch

Who would enjoy this book? Any obsessive thinking person into puppetry, early television, imaginative, brilliant and clever writing, satire, cartoon animation, radio drama and comedy and a host of other topics I just can't think of right now.

Rather than try to describe what the authors presented so well, let me just say here was a guy I wish I could have met. Not just for his talent but for his character.

Read the book; it's as close as you'll get to a uniquely facinating and wonderful man.

This is a good book for referencing multiple Tarot deck card interpretations simultaneously. However, if you are looking for deeper insights into the Tarot, or are seeking a book written with flare and imagination to inspire your soul, look elsewhere.

The Dictionary Of The Tarot is a fine general purpose tarot book, and will certainly help anyone interested in Tarot to appreciate that there are multiple meanings to each card, and how that the meanings and attributes of the cards (and decks) evolve over time in a most organic way. Mr. Butler's book is also a good compliment to other similar books on the Tarot such as Tarot and Magic by Gareth Knight, and The Devil's Picturebook by Paul Huson (a truly excellent little book).

With that appreciated, in regard to Tarot (as with so many other things in life), it is best to read widely and seek contrasting points of view. Eventually obscure corroborations start to become clear and patterns begin to manifest, at which time you will be able to better judge for yourself what is true enough from what that is more false.

Does not deserve to be out of print, a classic

Concise, logical, accurate summaries of Tarot card attributions by twentieth century authorities and developers of the cards. To compare and contrast their design theories against your own card experiences deepens appreciation and sharpens thought. If you see it used, grab it.

A tarot classic.

This book, which stands up to the standards of Schocken Books and which should not be out of print, is one of my favourite.

The book compares the design and interpretation of each tarot card between many decks (e.g. Rider-Waite, Thoth, Marseilles, Golden Dawn, Gringonneur, Visconti-Sforza, and B.O.T.A), giving background material to the tarot deck as well as some specific cards.

The comparison is concise and intelligent, giving insight into both the cards' interpretation, design, and historical developement, which makes it unique.

Several spreads are given (10 cards Celtic Cross, 21 cards Gypsy Method, a method from MacGregor Mather's book The Tarot, an adaptation from Crowley's Book of Thoth, etc), which make the book a complete handbook.

A useful glossary of terms and a bibliography, which is useful for anyone who wants to study the tarot in greater depth, close this excellent book.

I highly recommend this book - is worth every cent I paid for it.

Just today in CT the lead story in the newspaper is of a divorce of a couple that was being handled in the adversarial legal system filled with lies and out-of-control anger that erupted into a shooting taking the lives of both parties to the divorce. I say enough is enough. Too many lives have been destroyed buy the adversarial legal system that pits husband against wife and makes the lawyers vast amounts of money. It is obvious to me and should be obvious to any thinking person that divorce of marriage does not belong in an adversarial system. It certainly belongs to be in a system of binding mediation with the purpose of protecting the lives of both parties, but not at the expense of the other.

Jane Butler-Biggs and editor Alison Daniels? We should bless their very socks and shoes, for in writing The Feng Shui Directory, they have given us a book that shines like a beacon out of the musty, dusty, teetering pile of current Feng Shui titles. Everytime I dip into this book, it starts my synapses zinging!
The Feng Shui Directory helps us to change our attitiudes, not just our furniture. It shows us how to PAY ATTENTION, giving us the skills to recognise how our homes affect us, and, reciprocally, how our behaviour and thinking affect our homes.
Consider the chapter on prosperity. It begins with several thought-provoking questions to ask ourselves regarding
abundance. It goes on to offer solutions for long-term patterns of poverty, a ritual to promote abundance and several methods to to invite sucess into our lives. With a wonderful assortment of practical techniques to apply all over the house and garden, it even informs us how many changes to make at a given time, how fast to do them and how to tell if youve gone a bit overboard boosting your wood energy!
The Feng Shui Directory is a really supportive book, written with much compassion, humour and crystal clear common-
sense. As a Feng Shui practitioner, I recommend this book to those clients, who, in the true spirit of transformation, really wish to explore the art behind the placement.
It 's a great book!

The Feng Shui Directory is a great way to start Feng Shiu and learn more about it. Much more than a guide to interior decorating or an ancient scheme of superstitions, Feng Shui is presented along with all the psychological and scientific benefits.

This book isn't organized - like other books of it's sort - by the rooms in your home. Instead, chapters like "Family" or "Love and Realtionships" describe how to use Feng Shiu to change different areas of your life. Feng Shiu is presented as a way of thinking and getting in touch with yourself, not as a guide to rearranging furniture.

The authors take a minimalistic approach - change slowly, over time, and feel things out. You won't be told where the table must go, but how to tap into your intuition and figure out (within the guidelines of Feng Shui) where you might best place it.

The entire book is in full color, and the illustrations and "Quick Fixes" sections are a great addition. This book is probably too general for the experienced Feng Shui-er seeking to improve specific areas of his/her life, but overall it's a definite thumbs up.

This book is fabulous. I have purchased many feng shui books and this ranks as one of the best. It does a better job than any other book relating psychological issues to feng shui. It is very well laid out and easy to read in sections, or at one time. Much more thought provoking about how your life relates to your environment than the others. No trite cures here. It would be good to read a more basic feng shui book before this one so you understand the bagua etc. This book does not cover that, it seems to assume that you know the basics. A real winner. I have ordered more for friends.

Builds from the foundation up, enlightening the reader with a well-rounded, solid presentation of the principles behind pyrotechnic compounds and devices, as well as delivering practical methodology for the professional. A must-have for the serious fire-artist.

I read Heyday while on vacation this past month and was pleasantly surprised. Written in post war NYC (that is WWI) and prior to the crash of the stock market, the story revolves around a loveable protagonist who is surrounded by a family of friends that include several lovable but flawed personalities. The story is endearing and well written. This is easily one of my favorite stories, and I can hardly wait for Mr. Butler to pen another story...

I approached this book as a curiosity, but once I began to read it, I couldn't put it down. It is fascinating and fun, with interesting characters and a lively story whose twists and turns take you on a wild ride of adventure. This is not some cliche 1920s tome with obligatory flappers and bootleggers, but rather a well researched, well executed multidimensional work that makes the era really come to life. Although I know Heyday is being marketed to a gay audience, I really think this book will find a much larger following.

Fascinating!

Having been born after prohibition was repealed, I have no first-hand knowledge of this period of history. Michael Butler has provided me with wonderful information on this subject, as well as on the subject of the gay culture of the time. The story is at the same time raw, poignant, historical, and kept me on the edge of my chair.

A great read!

Intricate, captivating and fun. I assume (from the back cover notes) that this is Butler's first novel, but it's hard to believe. He develops characters quickly, draws the reader in and leads them through a complex, at times almost zany, plot. The New York Times review originally caught my attention -- pretty lavish for an unknown -- but now I understand why. I hope Butler's working on his next novel right now.
