Outstanding CTO/CIO coaching resource
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-29
This book is, as far as I know, one of a kind.

It presents an amazingly insightful set of patterns and anti-patterns that span the realm so near and dear to the CTO. These patterns range from organizational roles, to Architecture (with a capital "A", of course...), to development processes that are key to successful outsourcing. Viewed as a CTO/CIO coaching resource, I believe it's unique in this thesis.

More importantly, it's unique in its quality. I can appreciate the breadth and depth of Dr. Butler's abstracted experiences, many (if not all) of which resonate with my own past lives. As a long-time Architect and current CTO, I am convinced that such writing could only emanate from a combination of painfully-learned lessons and a very strong intellect.

Cast in the spirit of the "patterns" literature that so appeals to computer scientists, and written with a clear and subtly humorous style, I see it as must reading for all who aspire to, profess to, or currently do occupy one of the corner offices.

I really wish that this book had been written years earlier, as I've personally experienced more of the pathologies than I'd care to admit.

Well done!!!

A better than usual anthology this one, and also from the mid-80's, so more impressive for that, the average being 3.88 overall. 13 stories, and four are excellent. Carr has managed to start with the best, have two of them in the middle, and funny, at that, and end with the other. Impressive organisation.

A shocking and severe true story
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-07
They Said It Was Murder is the harrowing true story of Brenton Butler, a fifteen-year-old black man innocently accused of a brutal murder. When he agreed to cooperate with the police, he was falsely identified for the crime, and beaten into confessing. What followed was a nightmare of trial, imprisonment, and eventual exoneration when the truth of how the police and authorities utterly bungled the case came to light. The story that formed the basis of an Oscar-winning documentary is related in thorough detail, by the innocent accused himself. A shocking and severe true story of a travesty of justice, and a stark wake-up call to the deficiences in America's law enforcement system.

"Carbon": what Lawrence himself called the basic stuff of the life of his characters in The Rainbow. It is this "carbon" that Lawrence celebrates. But Lawrence's academic admirers have done their best to deny its presence in his novel, and the denial goes on today more than ever. This book, partly an attack on the academic appreciation of Lawrence, seeks to restore to one of the greatest novels of the century its lost power.

creative resource for teachers

This book covers everything from understanding the characteristics of early-childhood ages to building relationships with the children and their parents to ways of making discipline situations easier. Its section called "The Program" is especially helpful because it lays out helpful hints for each part of your teaching day--from welcoming students to clean-up time. Each "tip" is easy to understand and, most importantly, easy to put in practice. They are each unique and creative and were obviously inspired by teachers themselves.

TORNADO!
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-03
The third of April, 1974, became known as "The Day Of 100 Tornados." A very chilling day for thousands, never to be forgotten. I was in the Louisville tornado, as it tore through
the city that afternoon. This just is not something one easily forgets. One tornado is terrible enough, yet there were many,
many more that night, not only in Kentucky, but throughout the
whole region. They just kept coming. I believe Mr. Butler has done a remarkable job with this book---bringing to life again that terrible day, and night, of sheer destruction. The Louisville tornado tore through our beloved Cherokee Park, destroying in one moment, thousands of beautiful trees that had been there for years. Certainly everything is recovering through the years since, yet will never ever be the same. This is a book of remembrance for those who lived through the horrors of that day and night...and a book
which clearly shows the sheer power of what a tornado can do.

This is perhaps the most solid roadmap to the future of tourism that's available today. Regional planners, development officers and tourism officials cannot responsibly discharge their duties without a grasp of the concepts and methods presented here.
