In this book, I have attempted a broad survey and interpretation of the present knowledge of the nature and basis of life, which will, I hope, be of interest to the general reader, as well as to scientists. I have avoided using technical expressions as far as possible. In the earlier chapters a few chemical formulas are shown, but their understanding is not necessary to the argument. I trust that readers, who are not technically equipped, will not be duly frightened by them. They are only the exhibits in the case, samples of the evidence which is available for the scrutiny of experts. While I hope that these formulas will be of interest to those who know how to interpret them, the less expert can look upon them merely as the footprints which scientists have used in finding their way along the roads on which we shall travel, in our voyage toward the almost "undiscovered countries" of the mind.

My aim has been to explain what science has found out about living things, and also to bring out the repercussions which this knowledge has had on the thought of recent times and on the picture which ordinary people have of life and human nature. The influences of science in forming the human outlook is very great and deserves a closer study than I have been able to give it.

Unfortunately much of the information which reaches the public, even it is not incorrect, is without a sufficient background to enable them to judge its importance in the whole scheme of things. The man in the street does not merely see science through a glass darkly, but reflected in distorting mirrors which magnify some features out of all proportion and suppress others. He reads about wonder drugs, test-tube babies, and electronic brains and is impressed. He is hardly blamed if he thinks that what remains to be found out will be found out very soon.

My object has been to put the scientific discoveries into a reasonable perspective; to show what has been achieved and how much remains.

Managers & Mantras is a superb account of a company's struggle with the outside influences of consultants, B-school management theory, and stock market analysts.

Butler and Keary trace the progression of Inchcape plc from its beginnings as a shipping/trading company, to its establishment as an "international marketing, services and distribution group", to its current form as an automotive services group. The transformation of the company from a diversified conglomerate to a de-mergered, focused business comprises the majority of the book, and with good intent. During this time the management of Inchcape looked to the top consulting firms and business schools for advice and assistance in order to both become successful and maintain a good standing with the stock market analysts.

An amazing amount of personal insight and detail is provided in the descriptions of the company's efforts to define itself, its mission, and its future direction.

Managers & Mantras does not read like any other business book on the shelves. I was swept into it from the first chapter because it tells a compelling story while at the same time provides many first-hand lessons of the pitfalls of a firm's adherance to the fashionable management theory of the day (the 'mantras' of the title).

I thoroughly enjoyed Managers & Mantras and I highly recommend it to anyone wishing to gain insight into the practical application of management theory.

This is a great little story for your preschool-aged child. Not too short, not too long. Great for bed-time. It's a Christian story, too!! I give it an A+++++++++ !!!!!!

I read this following a visit to Sarah Island,Strahan, Tasmania where this tragic story starts out. This really is a "must read" for anyone who has visited the island. Based on true events the author recreates the misery that was the lot of secondary convicts and the daring escape of the last of those on Sarah Island.
I was almost in tears by the end of this book.

Ted Butler's second book in his Belt Republic series is now available. Menace Beyond the Moon is another old-fashioned space opera. Marketed as a young adult novel it can be enjoyed by everyone of any age who likes a good adventure.

Ted's hero, Gil Klanz, is charged with taking a warning to the Belt Republic that the Belt Cooperation - their archenemy - has assembled a huge fleet that is about to attack the new nation. Gil finds himself in the colony of Devonsport, which has just revolted, and becomes the first target of the BC fleet. As a combat veteran he is drawn into the battle as an advisor. It is another good, edge of your seat, read.
