What Self Said to MeReview Date: 2008-09-16
BY MARJORIE BUTLER
This book is a collection of vignettes affording a glimpse into the daily life of ordinary persons, doing ordinary things. A coming of age story beginning before the days of political correctness and women's lib and culminating with her thoughts about matters of current interest.
I can't remember when I have had so much fun reading. Ms. Butler is a story teller extraordinaire. There is no rosy prose or hyperbole here. This lady tells it like it is. She allows the reader feel as though she is with an old friend, drinking coffee and reminiscing. You will step into the life and times of the author and the circumstances that shaped her. Her ability to make the ordinary minutiae of daily living interesting is remarkable. The reader will get to know her and what makes her tick. Ms. Butler says that she always wanted to be a writer. She is a writer, a very good one.

High theory's prankster at his bestReview Date: 2006-01-11
First off, if you simply wish to gain a straight forward understanding of some of the possible theoretically usages of Lacan, Hegel, Kant, Foucault, Heidegger and a host of other heavy hitters then Zizek is your man. He loves a tangent, but he uses anecodotes, jokes and examples from popular culture to demonstrate difficult concepts in a clear way. (In my opion, that's what real genius is.)
Secondly, the essays are very witty, sometimes even hilarious. Whether Zizek is explaining that the Lacanian analyst is like Hannibal Lecter trying to eat Clarisse Starling's 'Dasein' or describing the perverse self-denials in Casablanca, he is always pretty snarky.
Lastly, I think Zizek, despite his penchant for silliness, does have a serious project. I think he wants people to use logic to transcend academic and psuedo-academic fads and to understand that human beings are miraculous and miraculously cracked. Zizek is miraculously cracked, that's for sure.

"Character-building"Review Date: 2008-05-12
Reviewed by: Stephanie Rollins, Parish Rollins (age 4), and Isaac Rollins (age 2) for ReviewYourBook.com
Lindy is an old lighthouse. She is replaced by a bigger, better, newer lighthouse. She feels sad. She is no longer wanted or needed. In a time of need, Lindy's experience and dependability is needed.
There are several morals in this story. One is that self-worth comes from within. Another is that dependability is to be cherished. Lindy possessed great character that in the end was very valuable. She was not as new and flashy as the new lighthouse, but she was needed for who she was--a great lighthouse.
This is written for children older than Parish and Isaac. I had to read ahead and abbreviate the story to keep their attention. However, this is a great story for older children. Elementary school children will enjoy the story. The words are easy to sound out. The font is large. The illustrations show emotion. This is a great book. I recommend it.

Only the Strong SurviveReview Date: 2008-07-27
Lots of anecdotes about life on the road and the Chicago music scene from the 50s through the 90s.
Butler is a major talent as well as an intelligent, literate man. A must read for fans of popular music in the last half of the 20th century.
More than a book about rhythm and blues musicReview Date: 2001-01-10
This is more than a book about music--although eighty percent of it is. It is a history book, political book, inspirational book -- you name it! One would never think that a rhythm and blues singer had that much depth. For example, Mr. Butler uses the tragic case of his former bongo player to show the horrors of the war in Vietnam. Then, turning to politics, he reminds us of the debt we owe the late Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, and what all of us can do to make this world a better place. It is at once inspirational and entertaining, thought-provoking and profound -- a must-read for all serious readers!
