My little man got this book when he was around 10 months old and it was an instant hit! He smiled the second he saw it and everynight he did a little giggle when his dad read it to him. One day he ripped two pages, cause it is a pop up and I forgot to put it out of reach, and I bought him a new copy. The book is so cute I had no problem buying it again.

I started reading my daughter this book at bedtime when she was about 10 months and she loves it. It's short enough for her tiny attention span, and the animal pop-ups seem very interesting to her. It also helps with learning certain body parts. It's a very sweet book. I love it too!

Marji did an excellent job with telling a variety of heart warming, humorous and feel good stories of days gone by. Her candidness allows the reader to peek into the lives of her family with true Americana style. One soon realizes that Marji's family has always been and continues to be the basis of her existence, and the joys in her life. I enjoyed every page and thank her for sharing her memories. The book is well written and very well thought out and I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys curling up with a good book in front of a warm cozy fireplace while the apple pie bakes in the oven.

I SAID TO MYSELF SELF
BY MARJORIE BUTLER

This book is a collection of vignettes affording a glimpse into the daily life of ordinary persons, doing ordinary things. A coming of age story beginning before the days of political correctness and women's lib and culminating with her thoughts about matters of current interest.

I can't remember when I have had so much fun reading. Ms. Butler is a story teller extraordinaire. There is no rosy prose or hyperbole here. This lady tells it like it is. She allows the reader feel as though she is with an old friend, drinking coffee and reminiscing. You will step into the life and times of the author and the circumstances that shaped her. Her ability to make the ordinary minutiae of daily living interesting is remarkable. The reader will get to know her and what makes her tick. Ms. Butler says that she always wanted to be a writer. She is a writer, a very good one.

Marji Butler's glimpses of life prove once and for all that real life is funnier and more bittersweet than most fiction. The first half of the book is a series of keen, and often hilarious, observations of a girl growing up in a quirky family in a central Connecticut industrial town in the 40's and 50's. The second half comprises vignettes of that same girl as the mother of three daughters, eleven grandchildren and countless numbers of pets. Ms. Butler is a former journalist and columnist for the Hartford Courant and her style reflects her newspaperwoman's flair for detail and keen observation. This book is a welcome relief from the current crop of crime, romance and self-help books on the market today.

Humor and Values for this Politically Correct world

While the cover says "written by a writer for writers" it ALSO SAYS, "and OTHERS"--THAT'S ME. The stories are short (written on a topic of a writers' group) and remind me of Andy Roony. You can read a story or two as you relax at night, and pick it up the next night and enjoy a few more stories. AND THOSE STORIES are funny, real glimpses into families (being a kid, raising a kid, dealing with the joys and bumps of life), from the fifties to today, a real antidote for the frustrations of our politically correct, crazy world.

This text is a GREAT dictionary on the Zizekian reading of Lacan, Hegel, and Freud. In general, the interpretation of difference and the theoretical understanding of racism, ethnocentrism, anti-semitism, etc. is necessary reading for any student of post-strucutralist thought as it applies to the social world.

What sizzling insistencies are presented here, served up on a platter of salad encrusted banana littered plenitude succulently garnished with mouth watering 1001 Nights Supa Sauce plus ultra crispy fries smoothly layered on delicious South Pacific grillings lightly and pliantly tossed and toasted in a sensational semiological batter, a perfect feast for the egregious sorts that salt away in the mines of academe with nary a twist or tryst such a work is a marvel to behold as it nestles willy nilly on the shelves of Opportune, suppurating and gently roasting in a chested blemish of buffoons...

The first collection in a series of essays by Slavoj Zizek, who is a Professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Ljubljana, Slovena and Visiting Professor at the New School for Social Research, New York and one of the leading contemporary cultural critics of the 20th century. A critically important acquisition for academic library Philosophy collections and student reading lists, this first volume of Professor Zizek's work is divided into three principle sections: 'Lacanian Orientations'; 'Philosophy Traversed by Psychoanalysis'; and 'The Fantasy of Ideology'. Enhanced with a glossary, an index, and an 'Author's Afterword: Why Hegel is a Lacanian', "Interrogating The Real" showcases impeccable scholarship and clearly documents Professor Zizek as an original and insightful philosopher in his own right.

I still have a few essays left in this little gem, but I would already highly recommend it because I have never had a better experience understanding Zizek.

First off, if you simply wish to gain a straight forward understanding of some of the possible theoretically usages of Lacan, Hegel, Kant, Foucault, Heidegger and a host of other heavy hitters then Zizek is your man. He loves a tangent, but he uses anecodotes, jokes and examples from popular culture to demonstrate difficult concepts in a clear way. (In my opion, that's what real genius is.)

Secondly, the essays are very witty, sometimes even hilarious. Whether Zizek is explaining that the Lacanian analyst is like Hannibal Lecter trying to eat Clarisse Starling's 'Dasein' or describing the perverse self-denials in Casablanca, he is always pretty snarky.

Lastly, I think Zizek, despite his penchant for silliness, does have a serious project. I think he wants people to use logic to transcend academic and psuedo-academic fads and to understand that human beings are miraculous and miraculously cracked. Zizek is miraculously cracked, that's for sure.

Giggle is a nine-year-old ghost who works magic, plays tricks, rescues animals, and even goes to the moon! She is also friends with two humans, Rusty and Lenore, as well as a six-year-old wind from the North Pole named Gusty. Giggle also has some grown-up neighbors that include a piccolo-playing ghost, a wise ghost from the synagogue, and a motherly lady skeleton. Giggle and her family are happy spirits who live in the bell tower of Father Boyle's church. Illustrated with b/w cartoon drawings, the nine short stories comprising It's Great To Be A Ghost! is an especially recommended and totally fun reader for children grades 3 through 6.

Schiffhorst's "It's Great to Be a Ghost!" is a must-read. While it's geared towards elementary schoolers, I would recommend it to anyone. The stories of Giggles the ghost and her friends are so fun and enjoyable! Your child(ren) will appreciate these magical charming little stories, and as a parent you will remain confident that he or she is learning some very important lessons too - tolerance and respect for all religions and people - even if they are green or blue! The large easy-to-read print, imaginative plot lines, and adorable illustrations will keep your child(ren) interested and their imaginations running wild! Kudos to Lynn Schiffhorst for such delightful well written stories - I hope to see more of her work on bookshelves soon! A true treasure that belongs in every elementary schooler's collection... Purchase it, read it, and enjoy it - you won't be disappointed!

I gave this book after reading it myself to my neighbor, Sonya, who is 9 years old . Sonya loves the idea of friendly ghosts and was thrilled when she saw the cover with Giggle's picture. These stories teach tolerance and multiculturalism with subtlety. They are informative, colorful stories that even adults can enjoy. My personal favorite story was about the Thanksgiving cat. And the great thing about Amazon is that the books arrive quickly. My order was even individually shrinkwrapped. Good choice and because it's a reader, it both educates and entertains. Good show, Lynn Schiffhorst!

Finally, a great book on Ghosts for children!

As a parent of an 8 year old, I was thrilled to have purchased such a wonderful book. My son had always been a little afraid of Ghosts and monsters. Having him read all the fantastic stories about "Giggles the Ghost" and her many adventures, he isn't afraid of ghosts any more. As a Jewish parent, it was a huge surprise to have a story about Hanukkah, as this was one of his Hanukkah presents. It is extremely well written and I applaud the author for her work. The illustrations are also marvelous. And yes, I too enjoyed this book.

Award-winning newspaper writing and poet Gloria D. Butler presents Lighthouse Lindy, a gentle children's picturebook about an anthropomorphic lighthouse named Lindy, who faithfully guides sailors at sea. When the modern, computerized Lighthouse Laramie is built nearby, Lindy is shut down for a time - she questions her own worth compared to the arrogant new Laramie. But when hurricane weather cuts out Laramie's power, he can no longer help desperate sailors - it's Lindy's old-fashioned gas light and her faithful lighthouse keeper that save the day. The two lighthouses learn the importance of teamwork, and that each of them has a unique strength, in this simple tale brought to life with soft color illustrations by award-winning artist Laura Shanley.

I am a teacher of 2nd through 6 grade gifted students. After reading reviews, I felt like this book would be good to share with my students. I purchased it and read it to my 2nd through 4th graders. They all liked it, but especailly the 2nd and 3rd graders. I always like books that teach values, and this one is full of life lessons about accepting others' differences and forgiveness. The lighthouse theme was appealing to both the boys and girls in my classes. The way that the author personified the lighthouses, and provided foreshadowing kept the students engaged. The students seemed to connect with Lindy and Laramie. Several other teachers in my school borrowed my copy and read it to their classes. Then they purchased a copy for their classrooms or their own children. I recommend this book to any teacher or parent of boys or girls in 1st through 3rd grades.

Lindy is an old lighthouse. She is replaced by a bigger, better, newer lighthouse. She feels sad. She is no longer wanted or needed. In a time of need, Lindy's experience and dependability is needed.
There are several morals in this story. One is that self-worth comes from within. Another is that dependability is to be cherished. Lindy possessed great character that in the end was very valuable. She was not as new and flashy as the new lighthouse, but she was needed for who she was--a great lighthouse.
This is written for children older than Parish and Isaac. I had to read ahead and abbreviate the story to keep their attention. However, this is a great story for older children. Elementary school children will enjoy the story. The words are easy to sound out. The font is large. The illustrations show emotion. This is a great book. I recommend it.

I am very excited about this text becuase it is not written just for the dancer or the sacred artist, but for anyone who desires an encounter with God in their temple. It contains the clearest, easiest-to-understand material regarding the purpose and power of movement ministry. Leadership and laity alike will experience and comprehend how the WORD can become flesh and delivered to the Body of Christ in a movement message. They will learn how, through the body (our temple), God allows the Word, to shatter the windows of darkness, pierce the principalites, and bring deliverance to souls in our nation and the world. I would highly reccommed this text to everyone because of it's sound biblical teaching on the call of dance as ministry , and the rightful place of the Arts in the Body of Christ. Enjoy!

As a preschool teacher, I look for books that actively engage young children and are able to pull them in to the story. This book certainly does that. Children quickly pick up the rhythym of the story. They relate to the characters. In our preschool, we have a teddy bear that we send home with the children, along with a copy of the book. The children love to be able to "read" the story to their family. They then "write" a story about the bear's adventure while at their home. This book is a perfect link for this activity. Parents and children alike love this story. Thank you Dorothy Butler for a wonderful story!

My almost-two-year-old really enjoys this book. The pictures are very bright and colorful, the situations familiar. The different "lists" for each scenario are engagingly highlighted, and each list is made up from a master group, stimulating young minds to remember what has been used more than once, and in what situations. The pictures of each activity also can serve as a kind of "where's waldo?" game, where your child can find the brown bear. Very lyrical sound, pleasant to read, which is good, because in my house, its requested more than once.

This book was reviewed in a graduate course in reading that I was taking. My Brown Bear Barney is a predictable print book. Such books are excellent in the very early stages of reading. Children memorize the book as you read it over and over and over again. Repetition the very thing our adult mind questions, children ask for repetition that they need. They learn to "read" you the book even when the book is not there. This stage of memorization is the first stage of reading. The child then moves to recognizing the words. For example, "Is this word 'bear'?" So both kindergarten teachers and parents can use this book. It is good to have a half dozen of these predictable print books at home. (Look up: Sue William "I Went Walking".)

A friend of mine gave me "Only the Strong Survive" as a Christmas gift, and now I treasure it as one of the best gifts I've ever received.

This is more than a book about music--although eighty percent of it is. It is a history book, political book, inspirational book -- you name it! One would never think that a rhythm and blues singer had that much depth. For example, Mr. Butler uses the tragic case of his former bongo player to show the horrors of the war in Vietnam. Then, turning to politics, he reminds us of the debt we owe the late Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, and what all of us can do to make this world a better place. It is at once inspirational and entertaining, thought-provoking and profound -- a must-read for all serious readers!
