Absolutely delightful! Wasey does a remarkable job.

Wasey describes the history and methods of gathering sap from the Sugar Bush (stands of maple trees) and creating syrup from them. She tells the story in a simple, straightforward and intelligent way that young readers will appreciate. I read this book to my 4-year-old son frequently, and he LOVES it, responding with all sorts of questions and comments. The book itself is elegantly illustrated with lots of photos and artwork, and the entire presentation takes a subject that is very foreign to many young people and makes it interesting and inspiring.

Parents who want children to learn meaningful ethics and be inspired by real-life young people will appreciate the work put into this book.

Engaging+Humorous TRUE TALE of Living in the Mountains
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-13
This is a book for those who love the Shawangunk mountains, those who love the mountains, those who love nature, and all who love a good tale told by a great story teller. Ever wanted to live in the mountains? Ever dreamed of building a cabin at your favaorite lookout? Ever looked for an adventurer and nature lover who could make you feel like you were hiking next to them, showering in a sudden downpour, listening for much-needed water to come from the sky during a drought, sitting cozy near the stove while the snow fell and the temperature dropped, listening to the snort of feeding deer during a star-filled night? If so, then this book is for you.

This book also contains quite a bit of wonderful anthropological journalism. The author writes about those who lived in these almost uninhabited mountains before him, and he writes with true respect, admiration, even love. It is rare to find an author, an adventurer and explorer at that, with enough self respect and self confidence to give those whose tales he first listens to, and then prints, the final word in his description of the land which was their home first, and is now his home also.

Teacher of the Year is compelling, intriguing story, that starts and ends with excitement and drama. It shows you how God can work through people to direct your path. This books re-affirms that fact that you can overcome anything through Christ and that you should never give up. I was truly inspired by this book. I suggest this book for all teachers, women, christians and teenage girls.

My 5 year old daughter recently read this book to me. She loved hearing the story of Teddy's adventures, and this book has inspired us to start a scrapbook of her adventures with her special toy animal friend. The last chapter is wonderful as it describes the bond of friendship between the bear and the little girl who loved him.

Daughter laughed out loud and learned while reading this one!

My daughter, age 10, loved this book and is anxious for more like it to come out! She laughed out loud and re-enacted many scenes! She loves history, which is a bit unusual for her age, but she enjoyed the kids' antics, loved the mystery (compared it to National Treasure), and had fun trying to picture the white house in her mind. This is a fantastic historical fiction for middle readers!

Praise With Caveat

I don't know that I trust myself to review this book. It has become something like a bible for me. I crack it open for inspiration to write, or to see things from a new perspective. Like any retrospective, it judges the life work of a man, not just a brief moment of time. That said, Jacobson's writing is crisp and fresh throughout. It is hard to pinpoint when he is the best; because he is always the best. Each essay is perfect. Some scrape the edges of beyond perfection, where distinctions fall away and confusion sets in. Where one tries to process exactly how he recording all this brilliant information. This is the modern world I want to live in. Where gangsters, pimps, movie stars and holy men coexist. Where there is place for both the Dali Lama and Pam Grier. This is the world Jacobson lives in, and for a brief period of time, as you read this book, you live in it as well. Luckily, it isn't posthumous, so you can read his essays as they come out regularly. Maybe he is a journalist's journalist. Or a writer's writer. But he is my favorite journalist, and perhaps, my favorite writer. So lest I run from the realm of hero-worship into that of deification (and idol-worship) let me stop here. Read this book. You won't regret it.

Unbiased relation
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.

A fifth grader will be tasked to write a book report on some prominent figure from the history of the United States. A Jr. High student will be given the same assignment and asked to elaborate and draw conclusions about that person on their own. A graduating senior will also write their thesis on someone of their choice, but will be forced to check the accuracy of the authors they reference in their bibliography.

Dan Murph's book about Price Daniel is the book that these students will choose. The intimate knowledge that the author has of one "Texas Giant" is remarkable and is not merely a book of words organized into neat little paragraphs. Rather, Dan Murph has provided unbiased insight into one man's life and has clearly shown how one man can make a difference.

What ifs drive more storylines than a Star Trek sequel. The author's description paints a vivid landscape for the reader to draw his/her conclusion with regards to, "What if the Electoral College had been done away with?" Would it change the introduction by George Bush? What if...What if...What if? The answers are within the pages of this book.

When you buy this book, avoid "reprint of the original"
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-08-13
This book was published in 1983 by Princeton University Press. There is only one edition and one printing. This book has never been revised or reprinted. Cloth Hardcover with pictorial dust-jacket. 447 pages, including many pictorial plates. Recently there are some book sellers misleadingly (and intentionally, I assume) listing their so called "reprint of the original" at this ISBN on Amazon for sale. (Sellers may use some other more creative names, but they will not say "1983 edition".) Please be warned these "reprints of the original" are not real books, they are photocopied pages, rebound Kinko's-Copy-Shop Style. These so called "reprints of the original" are of horrendous print quality and binding quality, with all the pictorial plates totally messed-up. One some of the pages, you can even see the underlining and highlighting on the original copy which are faithfully reproduced in this "reprint of the original". (People making those photocopies didn't even bother to find a clean original copy.) They are worse than a Professor's pre-publishing draft you have seen or used in a typical univeristy. I bought one such copy without knowing it was a photocopied stuff. (Most buyers would not know because those sneaky sellers don't want to tell you this is the case.) I returned it back to the seller and used credit card charge-back. You should do the same and teach those sneaky sellers a lesson.

Fitting In
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-01
Finally, a book for the child who wants to fit in. The heroine deals with the same issues that all middle school age students, especially girls, struggle with - too fat, too dark, too whatever. Addressing those concerns would be enough, but there is more - a wonderful twist that will keep the reader interested. Historically accurate with a web page for the interested reader, Time Will Tell is the perfect book for the contemporary middle-schooler.
